Film Reveals Talib’s Dominance Against Bucs
September 24th, 2013Greg Schiano’s mentor, Bill Belicheat, has a new leader of his defense. The Boston Herald today even called that new leader the “backbone” of the unit.
He would be helmet-wielding, cabbie-slugging, Adderrall-popping, coach-cussing, referee-charging, pistol-friendly, granny-hassling Aqib Talib.
The Herald published a film breakdown of Talib’s dominance of the Buccaneers on Sunday, including how Talib’s study led to his interception. Here’s a large excerpt, but the entire piece is a good read.
That’s how Talib worked against the Bucs, who tried a few different ways to create space for Jackson. Yet, Talib followed him wherever he went, lining up at left corner 19 times (Jackson caught 1-of-2 passes for 12 yards), the left slot seven times (1-of-2 for 19 yards and an interception), the right slot three times (1-of-1 for 3 yards) and right corner nine times (0-of-1).
Talib’s ability to handle Jackson was impressive, using a number of tactics to slow down an explosive player who totaled 15 receptions for 306 yards and three touchdowns in his previous two outings against the Pats.
There was a play when Talib pressed Jackson at the line and was strong enough to guide the receiver out of bounds. Talib’s hand technique was also strong enough to disrupt Jackson when he gave him enough space to release from the line. That gave Talib the option to change up his approach. The cornerback’s hips are fluid enough to grant some receivers a free release before turning and staying with them down the sideline.
To be fair, that tactic nearly backfired when Jackson beat Talib for a could-have-been 38-yard touchdown. Talib got a fingernail on the ball at the last moment, but Jackson still should have had it.
The Bucs tried different ways to free up Jackson, including a couple of pick routes and bunch formations, but he still only caught three passes for 34 yards. There was one great design when Jackson ran a submarine route behind the offensive line before catching a 3-yard pass on third-and-2, and those routes are nearly impossible to defend.
Talib also had a pristine interception when he recognized Jackson’s route through film study and practice, where coach Bill Belichick said he picked off that exact play against the scout team a couple of times. That playmaking ability has led to Talib’s four forced turnovers in three games.
When Jackson departed in the third quarter, Talib shifted his focus to Williams. While shadowing Williams, Talib played left corner 10 times and right corner 10 times, and broke up an end-zone throw with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, which was the first time Freeman targeted Talib since the opening play of the third.
With Talib having a shutdown kind of day and Vincent Jackson getting hurt, the Bucs’ lack of depth at wide receiver and tight end was highlighted.
Tonight on his radio show, Josh Freeman acknowledged that rookie tight end Tim Wright and WR Eric Page (who was hurt his entire rookie season) were pressed into tough duty considering the Bucs’ complicated offense. Freeman had high praise for what Page delivered and said Wright shows talent in practice.
Regardless, Talib was stout against the Bucs. Joe would still bet on Talib doing something stupid and suspendable before the season is over, but on Sunday he did, in fact, burn his old team.

Last year everyone was all giddy that the “alleged” rock star got a draft pick for Talib!
Funny how Blount and Talib are good enough for a Super Bowl contender, but not this sad sack of a team!
ROCK STAR!
September 24th, 2013 at 9:11 pm
There’s no doubt Talib has talent but he always seems to get “hurt” at the most inopportune moments, he will do it this year, just wait.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:21 pm
When healthy he is one of the best. After all the years backing him through those tough times I wish we would have stuck with him a little longer. He would have helped us down the stretch last year and paired with revis we would have one of the best secondaries in football. Happy for him that he is with a winning team just wish it could be ours.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:22 pm
I’m not even gonna say what I already said regarding Talib’s “departure”.
What the NE game did was create the blueprint that every team from now on will use to shut down our offense. Take out VJ, and we’re done.
Dom, call up underwood. If he had personal beef with Schiano (likely), they need to squash that and reunite. Im sure Underwood doesnt want to remain unemployed. And he knows Free & the “complicated” offense.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:24 pm
Hard to believe he’s matured in only one year. He’s always had the talent, but the Bucs couldn’t trust him to stay on the field. Now that he’s with a no nonsense, proven winner, who probably convinced him this is his last chance in the NFL, he has straightened himself out.

without a doubt. but I guess he just wasnt a “Buccaneer Man”. or maybe he didn’t “love football”.
(our best player in franchise history is the biggest azzhole of all, but Father D knew how to work with his guys and channel that into production on the field.)

Yourself included as I seem to recall.
Bottom Line:
No one ever claimed Talib wasn’t a good CB. The problem we had with him was every year he spent here he either got in trouble with the law or got suspended. He is a stupid man and doesn’t consider how his off-field issues can affect a team.
For his own good he needed a hard dose of reality. The Bucs had to get rid of him for the good of the team and for the good of him.
So throwing it up as a bad move now just because the dose of reality “appears” to have worked is out of line. It was the right move. Period. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t hard but it had to be done
And frankly, if he were here now he would be pure trouble.
Don’t think for a second the Pats will get him a ring this year. The Broncos are winning the afc.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:32 pm
talib is a bum. free makes most CB’s look like pro bowlers.
I mean it was free who threw the pick right?

Banks is a rookie who has only played in 3 reg season games. He’ll improve.
Johnson is horrible, on that I agree.
In all fairness to Banks, fans didn’t think Barber was good at first either. You just have to give it time to find out. He has gotten better from game to game though…if only slightly.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:39 pm
Eternal Goober,
You don’t recall very well. I said at the time I had no idea why we were trading the best player we had in a crappy secondary. People who worship the alleged “rock star” kissed his feet for the move, but as someone who despises JFro just slightly more than Dom, I was not one of them.
Go back to your homer ways, but don’t spew misinformation about me.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:40 pm
To be fair, Talib had a lot of second chances in Tampa. This is one move that even in my biggest rage I can’t really fault the Bucs for. He screwed up so many times, it’s hard to count. Some players just need a different environment for one reason or another, and Talib appears to be one of those guys. Of course I wish he was on the team now, but that doesn’t mean he would play this well with us. He could very easily have gotten hurt, suspended, or just plain stink (he did all 3 on a regular basis in Tampa). I did, however, swallow a little vomit when he intercepted Freeman in the end of the first half. Of all the guys to make that play, why did it have to be Talib?
September 24th, 2013 at 9:47 pm
“And frankly, if he were here now he would be pure trouble.”
You know that as much as we knew he was gonna outperform Revis in 2013.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:47 pm
There were an overwhelming amount of fans on this site last year that wanted Talib gone. Far far more than those who wanted to keep him. It wasn’t even close, and even though I was in the minority, I totally understood and supported the decision.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:51 pm
I get he was trouble, but we had no CB depth! And we had no Plan B after we got rid of him. We had a Plan C – Eric Wright.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:53 pm
You’re right about that. I was indifferent at the time, and just thought he was another punk. But when they didn’t go out and find another #1CB, I was pissed.
September 24th, 2013 at 9:55 pm
Who is the next former Buc that we play that is going to torch us. Really beginning to wonder if we are any good at evaluating talent (minus the hedious Myron Lewis experiment).
September 24th, 2013 at 9:57 pm
@Makaveli,
It’s hard to get a #1 CB midway through the season. It’s hard to get one in the offseason. Thankfully, we have one now (but even Revis was a huge risk because of his knee). The real mistake, in my opinion, was refusing to adjust our defense to our corners. We continually left them on an island, as we blitzed our LB’s and ran stupid stunts with our linemen. You have to protect them if they are terrible, not expose them as we did. We played a zone against Atlanta in week 16, and they looked halfway decent. It’s a good thing we didn’t wait too long to make an adjustment.
September 24th, 2013 at 10:00 pm
Scotty- how can you minus the Myron Lewis experiment? That may have been the single biggest bust of the Dominik era and he held a roster spot for 3-4 years. Garbage.
September 24th, 2013 at 10:07 pm
@ Hawaiian, youre right again. Im slippin and its only 10pm. Oh well. We don’t play the patsys for a while now, so I could give a F about Talib.
Whats sad, is that I cant wait for Gorrers return.

Had Talib stayed with us he would have probably been arrested for rape, kidnapping, murder and terrorism by now.
We had to let him go…and now many are crying over spilt milk.
The problem is that we haven’t realized the benefit yet. Sure he played a great game against us….our imptent offense has made everyone look good so far.
It was only time before Jackson was shut down…but I’ll bet anyone that is temporary.
Our problem is simple….Freeman…and not enough weapons for him.

with any GM, you gotta take the good with the bad.
Rich Mckay put together THE greatest defense of my generation. But he made mistakes too. Here’s some of his 1ST Round picks:
Kenyatta Walker
Reidel Anthony
Trent Dilfer
Eric Curry
not to mention later round busts like Bert Emanuel & Jaquez Green, and I’m sure theres a bunch more that Im leaving out.
Being a GM is like playing baseball. You’re pretty good if you can hit at least .300

A bright side: The tackles are playing very well for the Bucs. Dotson in particular is grading out amazing over the first three games. I love to see young undrafted guys play hard after they get a contract.

Settle down folks. Wipe your chins after worshipping Talib.
Let’s keep in mind that the Patriots have him on a 1 year PROVE IT deal. So he’s basically in a contract year.
As soon as this loser gets a 3 or 4 or 5 year contract, he’ll step out of line again.
He’s trash.
September 24th, 2013 at 10:44 pm
The grades are in folks: The guard and tightend play has been poor. Davin Joseph need to get it together, he stinks right now. Freeman and Martin have only had one bad game, and that was a horrible week one. Both have graded out average over the last two. Leonard is grading out average, and better than Banks. Nicks played no better than Carimi did in week 2. The Tackles Penn and Dotson are playing the best football on the field.
Akeem Spence is playing very well and looks like a keeper. Teo’Neshiem is not NFL material. Bowers was average week one and three and horrible week 2. Revis is grading out Probowl levels. McCoy has declined steadily since week one. In spite of splash plays Clayborn is not grading well. The Safety play has been marred by penalties, but Barron had a great week 3. Watson is playing better than Casillas. Foster had a great week one and two, but slipped last week.
September 24th, 2013 at 10:49 pm
A change of scenery has been helpful for players in other cases…..it just hurts to see Winslow & Talib beat us. Maybe Goldson will help us beat SF.
You can always second guess personnel moves…but it really serves no purpose.
Everything feels bad now because of the losses…so go ahead, complain all you want about Dominick, Schiano & Sullivan….throw in a dash of Freeman….wish you had Talib back….hell I’d still like to have Steve Young back!!!

The Bucs didn’t draft Bert Emaunel. He was an FA that came from the Falcons.
And when you draft STARTERS you get leeway on some of your misses.
McKay drafted brooks, sapp, ronde, Abraham and Brian Kelly. All drafted. All starters. You can miss on Jaquez Green when NFL network says you have the 10th beat draft class of all time w 2 hall of famers.
September 24th, 2013 at 11:08 pm
ok Adam, I get it. you dont like Dom. thats fine. Im upset about a few moves he’s made, especially hiring this HC. but he’s given us a core group of players on both sides of the ball. through the draft and FA. and barring some miracle turnaround by Freeman, that’ll be another big blunder. but in my opinion, Freeman never had a chance. and I see him maturing after this mess of a season (so far), and being a success somewhere else.
September 24th, 2013 at 11:15 pm
Freeman could very well be a success somewhere else….I don’t like our offensive system for Freeman….I think he can roll out of the pocket run & throw on the run. He has the arm…yes he is inacurate in particular with short passes….
When I say he can be a “success” somewhere else….that is a relative term….it doesn’t mean he will be elite….just an above average QB….give him a Ravens defense and like Dilfer, he could take a team to the SB.

It was never a question of Talib’s ability or talent. The man just could not stay on the field and out of trouble. I am happy he is doing well in NE but I wish he could have gotten his act together while he was a Buc.

Having Revis, Talib and Banks would make this defense actually able to lead from the secondary. Right now we are trying to with Leonard Johnson who if you ask me is a good 4th corner who could come in if someone gets hurt, but not a legitimate slot corner in this league (yet).

Freeman had 5 years. And if was merely decent this year e would have been franchised and had 6. His weapons gradually improved.
What would Tom Brady do with this offense? Or Peyton manning? They’d cream their jock.
Josh can’t throw a swing pass. And I mean that literally. He can’t throw a 4 yard soft pass to Doug Martin and hit him in stride.
