Bucs Practice Squad Has Familiar Names

September 1st, 2013

The Bucs have been busy establishing their practice squad, and it’s got familiar names on it: tight end Danny Noble and wide receiver Chris Owusu.

Both spent significant time on the main roster last season.

Cornerback Deveron Carr, offensive lineman Jace Daniels, linebacker Ka’lial Glaud, defensive tackle Matthew Masifilo, and offensive tackle Mike Remmers are also in the mix, per CBS Sports.

Practice squad guys earn at least about $5,000 per week, but can be paid much more. Joe suspects Owusu commanded significantly more cash than the minimum to re-join the Bucs after getting cut yesterday.

That’s 7….just enough room for Tim Wright or Sean Baker

  2. MR.T Says:

If Tampa does any more tweaking to its 53 man roster I think Wright is the most expendable. With Noble on the PS he can be brought back if there are any serious TE injuries. At 220, unless he bulks up a lot, Wright is no blocking threat and would be solely a pass catcher.

  3. Andrew 1 Says:

if Wright is to small to block inline, then we dont necessarily have to put him on the line of scrimmage. we could use him as an H back (blocker lined up behind the line of scrimmage) or get him in motion and have him block on the run, that way it will be a lot easier for him. my point is there are ways of working around not having the girth to fight in the trenches and still be an effective blocker. just ask Shannon Sharp.

  4. Andrew 1 Says:

but if the bucs are not willing to do that and they want a TE who can line up on the line of scrimmage and block, then they are probably going to have to look elsewhere. I do agree with you guys though, I dont think his place on the roster is safe.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m thinking Russell Shepard in the Wildcat.
Joe doesn’t think Schiano will run the wildcat…but that’s because he didn’t have a player…
With Shepard’s skillset…it would be a waste not to use him that way.

  6. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Tampabaybucfan

we could… thats certainly a possibility. I watched that highlight video you posted and it looked like he ran a lot of jet sweeps and was pretty good at it. as much as it pains me to say this, it could also mean the return of the dreaded Bennd around lol.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Andrew

    Yea…..but the “Benndaround” without Benn

    This guy has some talent.

We need add a few things to our offense…line this guy up as a 3rd reciever once in a while…bring him back toss it to him and let him throw to the RB etc.
It doesn’t have to be a traditional Wildcat to be effective.

  8. Andrew 1 Says:

not that I would love to see.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I bet Owusu hopes Underwood gets picked up….I wouldn’t like being on the practice squad with a guy like that in town.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Cody Wallace picked up by Steelers…so that should shut up the whiners that say nobody takes our cut players.
Also the cut of Underwood should shut up the “Rutgers Paranoia Club”

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Andrew

I was on “Wright Is A Surprise” article earlier today and there is someone with a Moniker BucsFans SUCK

Can you believe that? I think JBF is being spammed by a bunch of rednecks from Carolina or Atlanta. The Saints fans aren’t smart enough to do that.

Anyway….this guy is super negative with all his posts….

  12. ben Says:

We arent going to run wildcat, sheppard has slot wr written on his forhead

  13. Andrew 1 Says:

lol. dont know why people worry so much about things like that. all that matters are the guys on the team and there success. at least thats the way I look at it.

  14. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Tampabaybucsfan

I hear you. always baffles me when I see that.

  15. BamBamBuc Says:

I’m thinking we could open up a spot on the 53 man roster if we just move Glennon to the practice squad… it’s not like other teams would be standing in line to get him. Before preseason, we could all say “Well, we haven’t seen him against NFL opponents”, but now we have numbers to go on and Glennon isn’t very good. His 47.1 completion % is 18th in the NFL this preseason… oh wait… that’s the 18th out of rookies only. Yep, 17 rookies had a better comp %. “But he was tied for most TDs by a rookie”… yeah, with two other guys. BJ Daniels taken in the 7th round and Tyler Bray who was undrafted. Combined they didn’t have as many attempts as Glennon, yet each had equal # of TDs. He was also the 15th rookie listed in QB rating. If I take out the 3 listed above him that didn’t even have 10 attempts (combined), he’s still 12th best rookie with a 61.4. Heck, the Raiders just cut a rookie QB that had a better rating than Glennon… yeah, the RAIDERS. I don’t think even the Jets would want Glennon, not because they got Geno Smith, but because Matt Simms has been the best QB on the roster and went undrafted. The Bills are looking to start Jeff Tuel (undrafted) if Manuel can’t go. Undrafted Tyler Bray out-played Glennon, and all he could muster was 3rd string QB on the Chiefs depth chart.

Put Glennon on the practice squad, draft a real QB next year.

(Think I’ve pissed the Glennon Mob off enough yet????)

  16. Couch Fan Says:

The road to the playoffs begins in 6 days! Can’t wait to see the real Bucs in action.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Putting the Wilcat in forces other teams to consider it and that in itself is a good thing. All I’m saying is we need to add a few dink & dunks to our offense.
Other teams dink and dunk us to death. I know Freeman isn’t really good at that but we still need to add some plays to our offense.
If we don’t use the TE….perhaps we can throw more to Martin or the Fullback……I wouldn’t be that upset if we got rid of Lorig and used Hillis/Leonard instead.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ BamBam

There is no way Dom is going to put his 3rd round pick on the Practice Squad…..They will develop Glennon into a suitable backup then let Orlovsky go. Tell O to stay in town and stay in shape.
Hell, Dominick won’t put any of his draft picks on the practice squad.
Actually I think James might be a good player to put there. There are so many NFL running backs with experience, he would probably stick.

  19. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ BamBam

I like your idea of moving a QB to the practice Squad but I think I would rather move Orlovsky if anybody. Even though teams dont seem like their in line to snatch up Glennon, their are still some pretty desperate QB needy teams out there, like the Bills. would definitely not want to risk losing somebody we took with a 3rd round pick, no matter how bad he looked in preseason.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Andrew

Can’t move Orlovsky…he is not eligible for the Practice Squad

  21. Eric Says:

I’d pick up a halfway experienced back up if I’m the GM. If Free goes down we would struggle to win two games. Vince young maybe, or McElroy.

  22. Andrew 1 Says:

    dang.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Andrew

Thats OK, I made the same mistake earlier re Goode….a player can’t be placed on the practice squad if he has one year or more accrued active roster experience.

I made that mistake with Goode because he was so underutilized (invisible) that I forgot he was on the team all year.

    They have some funky rules

  24. Stanglassman Says:

UI think Mike James would be snapped up in a minute if we put him on the practice squad he does too many things well. I don’t think Glennon would last long on PS either. There are too many QB coaches in this league that would be sure that they can coach him up to be an inexpensive backup to their starting QB. The Bucs are counting on Underwood being available during the season if they get the injury bug or some other WRs aren’t working out. The eagles are doing some crazy endurance training for their team to keep up with the tempo of the offense they plan of running.

  25. BamBamBuc Says:

Of course I was kidding… Sheesh! Glennon is the backup, like it or not. I happen to not like it. I didn’t like it at the draft (especially in a lousy QB class) and I don’t like it now. I can only hope Josh stays healthy and plays as well as last year. If not, forget Clowney, we’re looking at Bridgewater!

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @BamBamBuc

I’m not worried about Glennon….the suprise plan is to have Glennon & Dotson play on the DL….and bat down balls….so we will get our money’s worth.

  27. Chris Says:

Ah the photo of the man responsible for this disaster we call an NFL roster. Can’t wait for a new gm who can actually evaluate talent.

  28. chris Says:

BAM BAM, Glennon wouldn’t make it through waivers for us to claim. Someone would pick up him instantly.

Glennon may not be a starter yet, or even ever, but I like his poise and at worst, develops into a very good back up QB. Hes not an idiot back there.

Now if we draft us a QB, I want Teddy Bridgewater. The dude is just screaming ELITE. I can’t find a weakness to his game.

  29. the_buc_realist Says:

    @Bam Bam

At least we know now, that if JFro is hurt or replaced that there will be zero drop off in performance when Glennon comes in.

  30. Eric Says:

Then again we might struggle to win two WITH Free at QB.

  31. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

We won’t need a blocking TE if the Bucs go out and get JOHN CONNER (FB)!

Sorry, had to get that out for the first time today.

    http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5913/john-conner

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Drop Glennon and sign Tebow.

That should get people riled up!

  33. Splengo Says:

    Splengo’s MMQB:

    – Chris Owusu will replace Ogletree before the bye.
    – BamBam wasn’t kidding. Either cut Orlovsky and make Glennon a true #2 or put him on PS. No sane GM will add him to an active roster, not even Raiders or Bills.
    – I like our waiver pick-ups. Chris Jones looks like Suh lite and Russell Shepard looks like Tavon Austin lite. Kudos to Dom.
    – If we get a receiving TE, I think we’re ready to make a run at this thing.

  34. Chris Says:

No splengo. I think you mean if we get a qb we can make a run. That’s TBD on josh.
