Lots of fans and media types have been zeroed in on all things Mike Glennon during training camp. Some believe that even if Glennon isn’t competing now with Josh Freeman, Glennon’s development is an important factor in the Bucs season.
NFL Network’s Rich Hollenberg has been a fixture at Bucs camp and offered a major thumbs up to Glennon during an interview with Bucs beat man Tom Krasniqi of WDAE-AM 620.
Hollenberg said Glennon has been impressive and has “proven himself worthy” of being a strong, rookie No. 2 quarterback. Krasniqi said Glennon has been more impressive than Freeman this summer, though he countered that there is no quarterback controversy.
Joe gets that media needs something to discuss, but Joe can’t offer any decent evaluation of Glennon. Let’s see the guy on Thursday in a half game or more against the Ravens, and then again against the Patriots.
Joe is pulling for Glennon in a big way. If he can, in fact, master the offense and look like a viable backup, then the Bucs can skip wasting a third-quarterback roster spot on Dan Orlovsky.

TKras was really adamant that Glennon was looking much better than Free on his broadcast yesterday but every single one of his guests seemed to think different lol Yet another Buc whose development could greatly shift the direction of the Bucs this time next year. Football season has begun, thank the lord!!!!!!!!

Lol, I hope the best man wins. I dont care if it’s Freeman or Glennon. And while Free is the starter now, I see no reason to think Glennon can’t be the starter at some point and soon or at least until he actually gets on the field and proves he’s better or worse than the 6 win a year QB Freeman is.

6 wins per season average… cracks me up every time. 24 wins, 4 season does equal 6 per year…. but he didn’t start his rookie year until mid-way through the season. So, really 3.5 seasons as starter. 24 wins in 56 starts is 40%, which is still a losing record, but raises it to 6.4 wins per season average. Considering the rookie year he was 4th string through camp behind Leftwich, McCown, and JJ and didn’t start getting real reps until everyone else failed… I’d discount that rookie year (especially with a OC change as the season started). So, now we get 44.7% (21 of 47) or just over 7 wins per season… better? No, still a losing record on average. But at least that # is more accurate than 6 wins a season when he didn’t even play a full season the first year. That’s like keeping Warren Sapp out of the HOF because he didn’t have any sacks last year…. when he was retired and not playing… Don’t think so.

I listened to the T-Kras show while he was at camp (saturday?). Everything he said contradicted everything everyone else was saying. For example, he said that Glennon looked better throughout camp than Freeman, and that Freeman has been very inconsistent since the start of camp.
This flies in the face of what several local and national media guys have said (Joe included). When I heard Kras say that, I got the sense that he wasn’t watching nearly as much camp as he claims.

Know what else drives me nuts…. people calling the truth an “excuse”. Nobody’s excusing anything. Is JF 25 years old? Um, yeah, he is, that’s the truth. Is it an excuse for losing? No, but it does leave a lot of room for growing up and getting better in the future. Has JF had multiple OCs and HCs and QB coaches? Yes, that’s the truth. Is it an excuse for losing? No, but it may explain some lack of progression while learning new systems. Other non-excuses thruths….. did JF break his thumb on a helmet in preseason and play regular season games with it? Yes.
Or cherry picking stats… most INTs over the past two season… Care to mention that Ryan Fitzpatrick also has as many INTs over that time? How about we go “over the past 3 years”? Care to mention who tops that list? I will, it’s Eli Manning with 56, followed closely by Drew Brees with 55. Fitzpatrick, Sanchez, Palmer and even Phillip Rivers have more over that time than Freeman. And so we don’t cherry pick only INTs, over the past 3 years, Freeman is #10 in TD passes thrown (yep, Brees, Manning, Fitzpatrick, and Rivers are all up there with him in that category too).
How about a new stat? Over the past 3 seasons, JF in 2010 TD/INT ratio is the 6th best in a season of all QBs over that time. Brady and Rodgers both have two seasons each ahead of him and Stafford has one. His 2010 was better than ANY of the young stud QBs everyone raves about including RGIII, Luck, Wilson, Tannehill, Dalton, Kaepernick, Newton, etc. Even Drew Brees hasn’t had a season with a better TD/INT ratio than Freeman in the past 3 years than he did in 2010. That performance ranks 11th best of any QB with 10 or more starts in a season over the past 10 YEARS. Brady and Rodgers hold 6 of the 10 season in front of him, Peyton Manning has one better. Drew Brees doesn’t even have one ahead of that, his closest attempt came in 2004 where he threw 3.9 TDs per INT (JF in 2010 was 4.2TDs per INT)
So, no excuses for JF, but definitely facts based on the past 4 years. Stats can be sugar coated or cherry picked to look good or bad (but it’s hard to argue with a 10 year history)

And that’s almost 7 wins a season with not much help from the defense and a lack of elite offensive playmakers. Glennon gets to audition with a lot of playmakers on offense and what looks to be a good defense shaping up. Glennon has an unfair advantage over what Freeman started with. Had Freeman started his career with the same team Glennon gets to play with now, then I think Freeman would have averaged better than 7 wins a season.

I listened to T-Kras yesterday too and it was a head scratching comment as he was adamant that Glennon was outplaying Freeman while every other report from last week said Freeman was tearing it up in camp.
I assume he thinks that Glennon has shown the same consistency both weeks of camp whereas JF5 was erratic week one and lit it up in week 2.
I hope Glennon shows us something in preseason but if this kid plays any significant snaps during the season that means JF5 is hurt and/or tanks and we are screwed.

IMHO, you need a back up. This draft was not stuffed full of talent. QB’s got pushed down. Draft a kid with some physical gifts that has a head for football. Work him. When Josh works out (Yes, when) you could if you want, trade him for a pick. Works for NE. They’re doing it right now. As far as wasting a roster spot on a 3rd QB, that’s not correct. The CBA allows for 52 men on a roster, 53 if you have 3 QB’s. Allows for an NFL restoration project in a QB strapped league.

TKras is a Jet’s fan. We play the J.E.T.S our first game, so I can’t imagine why TKras would be promoting Glennon. I mean why wouldn’t his motive be to have us play our rookie QB against his team, instead of Freeman.

Using the defensive problems as a reason for Freeman stinking it up is not any kind of truth… You can’t prove that its true. You simply can’t, that is your OPINION. Therefore it is nothing more than an EXCUSE. Him being 25 years old is another excuse. Is he really 25 years old? Yes. But so what? There are QBs younger than that winning, so his age shouldn’t even be mentioned but yet you lovers seem to mention it along with the defensive excuse every chance you get…. then try to say your not using it as an excuse…. Thats what drives me nuts.
Facts and truths of Freeman:
1 4000 yard season under his belt
1 winning season under his belt
Statistically the worst QB in our division
Thats pretty much all he has accomplished thus far in his 4 year career.
I’m sorry little things like wins and losses mean nothing to you as long as he looks pretty on stat sheets. I, on the other hand would trade all those yards for wins.
Now, I know you are going to say “But it’s a team game. You can’t blame it all on Freeman.” and you are right that I can’t and never do blame it all on Freeman. But his play contributes to that record and he has had more not so good moments than actual good moments. If Free played lights out most of the time then he would get the benefit of the doubt. But he doesn’t, at times (a lot) he is bad, and well when you play badly and you have a losing record…. you disserve all the criticism you get.

Josh freeman has to have the best season of his life so then we can trade him. I really hope he wins out in tampa , but lets face it mike glennon is the future in tampa bay. He would been better in college of he had the bucs good o line. I expect him to be thrown in the fire asap if freeman does bad vs the jets!

Trading freeman is not a bad idea, thinking rationally here. How can we give him a big contract next year when we really have little to no cap room.
Then again who needs a QB?? All teams addressed that issue, except jaguars. I’m no Glennon fan, but we won’t be able to sign freeman unless we restructure contracts or cut players.

I wouldn’t think that the worst Freeman hater would say that Glennon should start day 1 vs the Jets. I do believe everyone’s IQ points dropped after reading those comments.
Also, not being able to resign Freeman. Remember, we are the Bucs not the Panthers. We could put Freeman in a clone machine, duplicate him 6 times and still give him monster contracts.

Matt, I really doubt that would happen. Mike Glennon might…might turn into a decent quarterback down the road. But you can tell by watching him now it is years away. He is no Russel Wilson. He may even have a good game this week. But keep in mind that a lot of starters on both teams are not playing. Others may only play one series.
I can tell everyone right now…Mike Glennon will get the most playing time in preseason games 1, 2 & 4. It will mean nothing except that the Bucs feel he need the work in order to become good enough to be a #2.
If the Bucs keep Dan-o this year, Glennon will start the season as the #3.

This is what will happen with Freemans contract. Freeman will play out the remainder of the year. At the end of the year, Mark Dominic will offer Freeman a contract extension that will benefit the Bucs, not Freeman. If Josh signs, great, Tampa got him cheaper than expected. If Freeman declines the offer, Dominic will franchise Freeman. Allowing for an additional year for Glennon to develop and compete. After the end of next season, the quaterback of the future will be much clearer. Smart move by Dom.

I genuinely want to see Glennon play this Thursday. I already have a pretty good idea of what I think we’re going to see from Josh this season. Lights out Josh, better than 2010 Josh. I can’t wait to watch the rookie. Not because I want to throw in people’s faces if he sucks it up either. Not to compare the 2 either, because to me there is no comparison. He’s a rookie, that’s what intrigues me. I want him to play well or even better than Freeman. That means it’s a good thing for MY Bucs.

Never said youth was a reason or excuse for winning or losing. Some young QBs have won, some have struggled. What youth does say is that there is plenty of time to improve. Unlike a Carson Palmer who will never be more than what he is now, Freeman is young enough to still improve and grow and play a long time. It’s not an excuse. I haven’t heard anyone say we lost because Freeman was too young.
I didn’t mention the defense, but the truth is the secondary was the 2nd worst in NFL history and worst in the NFL last year. I’m not saying that’s an excuse for Freeman at all, it’s the truth and it contributes to losses a lot more than the 9th most passing yards in the NFL did. Not saying Freeman was bad because the secondary was bad. Not saying we ONLY lost games because of the secondary.
As for your “truths”… his 1 4000 yard season? Only three other QBs near the same age have done that in the past 5 years… Stafford twice, Luck and Newton once. Matt Ryan has a couple, but (even though drafted only one year before JF) is already 28. And winning seasons? Newton has none in two years (JF had one after his first full season starting) and Stafford only has one (just looking for the young QBs for comparison). As for the “team game”, just ask LeBron James if he is more likely to win championships with the Heat or the Cavs? Without the support, it doesn’t matter how good the individual is, especially in football. Just listen to every HOFer this weekend talk about it being the greatest individual award because football is the MOST team game of all sports and to be recognized for individual accomplishments is an incredible honor.

I’m a josh fan. I think he has the talent to get the job done. but I’m not blind to some of his faults. You can say it’s an excuse. But over the past couple years you can’t deny that we’ve had one of the worse defenses on earth. Of course josh put us in some tough spots last year. but the defense lost at least 2 or 3 games last year for us in the final minutes . they could never hold a lead. I just don’t understand how some ppl can say how awful he is. Yet they give everyone else on the team a pass. if we had a middle of the road pass defense we would have made the playoffs imo. if he comes out this year and can’t get the job done, and Glennon looks promising. Then I’m ok with going for him. I just find it laughable that ppl want him to take over now. Same ppl probably haven’t even seen him play yet.

Watching the Falcons loss from last year again to see the “beginning” of our slide and Freeman’s contribution to it. I’ve heard a lot of “excuses” from those that say Freeman’s 3 and outs leave the D tired and that’s why the D didn’t lose the game. So….
Atlanta got the ball first. With a fresh D, we let the Falcons on the opening drive go 12 plays, 72 yards, taking 7:22 off the clock and get a FG. Free hasn’t even stepped on the field yet.
We get the ball. Free’s offense drives 81 yards in 10 plays taking 6:26 (giving the D a rest) to score a TD and take the lead. So, the D got a rest and the lead.
At which point the Falcons drive 10 plays, 75 yards in 5:47 to score a go ahead TD. D leaves the field tired and down in the score again.
Our next possession is why it’s Free’s fault. 3 and out. Oh wait, let’s take a closer look. First play is offsetting penalties, so first play again. Falcons blitz, no one picks it up, Freeman can’t even get to his 5 step drop and is sacked. Free bad under pressure? or horrible blitz pickup? 2nd and 17, Free hits Martin for a screen play, Martin makes a great move and breaks off a 42 yard gain… but wait, 2 penalties on the Bucs O-line, 2nd and 23. Beginning to see the ridiculous odds and mistakes Free has made? At worst he didn’t recognize the blitz, but still picked it up the next pass to Martin that was negated by others.
I won’t go through the whole play by play, but you have to see what’s going on. Atlanta had 5 possessions that went 60 yards or more. They scored every time but one, missing a chip shot FG to end the half. I can’t blame the offense for the D getting tired, it’s their own fault they couldn’t get off the field. Falcons converted 8 of 13 third down attempts (each an opportunity to end the drive and get off the field), 62% success rate. After the Bucs took a 23-17 lead with 10:33 left in the game (and controlling the clock in the 3rd 13:20 to 1:40, so no excuse of tired D), the D came out and gave up a 6 play 62 yard drive and the winning TD, including a 3rd down conversion by penalty on the secondary for holding.
I haven’t gone through the other games looking for the same things yet, but I will….

Not a Freeman fan, 1987. A BUCS fan. I want the team to win. I don’t care how they win, I just want them to win. That said, I know how difficult it is to find a QB that can single-handedly take a team, lift them on his shoulders and win a Super Bowl. It just doesn’t happen very often. I believe Aaron Rodgers is the last QB drafted that I can say actually did that and he was drafted 8 years ago (and even then I question it, they just had a really bad run game, but defense was pretty good). There are maybe 5 QBs drafted in the past 10-15 years that can be considered elite today, that’s not very many.
If we want to win a championship, we need to go about it the way most teams do, which is have a decent QB (which Josh is, not great, has faults, but decent) and put a team in place around him. Whether that team be a run game (Martin), a defense (Revis,Goldson, GMC, David, etc), better pass targets and protection (VJ, MW, Penn, Nicks, Joseph, etc). or whatever. It’s actually EASIER to fix other areas to be great than to get a QB better than decent. This is why I defend Freeman, because it’s much more likely to downgrade our QB position than it is to improve it. Could set us back years.
I am a BUCS fan, not a fan of any one player or position. Some positions ARE more important to the team (QB), but are also much more difficult to improve. The success fans have seen in the past 2 years of young QBs makes fans think it’s easy. But they’ve only been playing a year or two (much like Josh in 2010). The odds of all the same question marks coming up about any or all of them is pretty good at some point in the near future. Heck, Kaepernick hasn’t even started a full season yet (2 years in NFL), RGIII major knee surgery, Luck is just on a bad team that did better than expected. I actually agree with Shaun King, we should have locked up Freeman long term before the season started, if only because he’s “good enough” with better parts around him.

Well said Bambam. And that is the difference between fans of the TEAM and fans, or “haters”, of certain players. I don’t care who wears the red and pewter, I’m cheering for them. As you so adeptly pointed out, some fans seek any morsel of evidence to support their ill-founded opinions. To blame # 5 for the nine losses is ludicrous. You don’t have to be a football wizard to see the obvious. Worst pass defense/secondary in the league and poor return game with a 9th ranked offense. Duh? Yes, two games Freeman threw multiple interceptions that contributed to the losses; but the Saints game was lost by the 40 something points given up so in my view our QB cost us one game. They probably were against drafting Freeman in the first place and now 4 years later are still seeking to validate their original stance.
