Ogletree Cementing His No. 3 Role

August 9th, 2013

The Bucs snatched up wide receiver Kevin Ogletree in free agency to be their No. 3 receiver, or at least give Tiquan Underwood a lot of competition. To date, Ogletree has landed the job while Underwood has been hurt and largely invisible.

Again last night, Ogletree looked the part against the Ravens. He broke free when Josh Freeman left the pocket during the Bucs’ second drive with the first-team offense. It was a 3rd-and-7 play, and Ogletree caught Freeman’s pass for 22 yards.

“Kevin made some plays,” Schiano said. “You know, Kev’s trying to learn offense. He’s trying to, you know, become part of this football team, find his spot, his niche on the team. And I think it’s happening. You know that’s what the preseason, OTAs, training camp is all about, the chemistry of your team coming together. And I see Kevin fitting in well with our guys.”

Ogletree said he hopes Bucs fans saw a player who loves football.

“I wanted to play the whole game. That’s what I was ready for; that’s what I was geared up for,” Ogletree told Joe. “Hopefully, [fans] see that I love the game. I’m trying to prove to everyone that I’m dependable, just trying to gain trust of my teammates and my coaches and, you know, my peers that I can make the plays when we need them. We got a lot of guys that can make plays around here, just to be consistent and to gain that trust is big.”

Ogletree led the Bucs with five catches for 65 yards. He’s also the hands-down leader for the No. 3 receiver job.

Joe’s not sure anyone has a chance to unseat Ogletree, unless, perhaps, he goes all Owusu in one of the next two preseason games.

    Ogletree looked good. Owusu…didn’t.

After 1 preseason game, Ogletree’s clearly the #3. Still time for that to change though.

he pretty much locked it down so far.

Owusu??? Ouchoso! dud stunk it up and TU didn’t do anything special. Ogletree was clearly the target of choice.

    Hagan looked decent @ KR

I am confident other teams roster cuts will provide us with a good return specialist before the season if one of ours doesn’t step up.

  4. Killian Says:

What about Demps? It seems Schiano may not mind letting him come to camp late.

  5. MadMax Says:

@Killian, I think we just need to give up on Demps. His heart isnt in it and Im sure he’ll fold on the first tackle since he doesnt want to risk injuring those Olympic competition legs. I have a feeling he’ll be cut.

  6. JeffNYC Says:

Ogletree simply looked like a NFL wide receiver. You know what he’ll give you and he gave you exactly that. Given this team’s propensity for having “good” and “evil” sides (sadly not just a Freeman condition), it was nice seeing someone who could act as a failsafe a la what other teams have with a good TE. No way KO doesn’t make the team.

I agree, last night just opened the door for Demps to bust through. If he has any talent on KR/PR, he could very well be in the mix with a good showing. Last night I dont think anyone impressed.

    Joe

I see you only post the fans of the Bucs and the die hards, but wont publish facts and reality, what a douche

Dear Jeff, first, your link and about the Bucs moving was completely off topic on this post about a wide receiver, Kevin Ogletree. Second, all first comments here are moderated. Joe would have let that in, but since you called Joe a douche, it’s not getting in. Joe doesn’t come to your house and insult you. Don’t do it here. –Joe

Agree with JeffNYC. Ogletree got the job done as a veteran player should. It’s why his coach brought him in from the Cowchicks. Nice job!
    Good for us.
Wouldn’t run Owusu out of town just yet Joe. Maybe the guy was just trying to do too much.
And Mad Max, why day no to Demps at this point? We’re you happy enough with the return game? Also, he may give us some offensive firepower, defenses have to account for any player with game breaking speed.

  10. Buc'n Junkie Says:

I agree with MadMax. If Demps were to show up I think he fold up like a cheap tent the first time he was tackled hard. Self preservation. He’d only show up to collect his first paycheck and then find away to be out with some mysterious injury. Football is not his first sport of preference. I’d rather give the spot to a guy who brings his lunch pail everyday.

  11. Bucky23 Says:

I would rather give the job to best return man

@Jeff…..F.U. let me repeat in case you don’t know what that means fuk you.

Ogletree impressed me. Seems like he took to this pre-season game like it was a regular season game. Then again who knows, next week he could out and drop 3-4 passes.

  13. MadMax Says:

@Biff….we’re just starting, so I cant properly gauge “the return game” just yet, based off of the 1st pre season game. But GM’s, Coaches and Scouts know when it is what it is :)……read what BucnJunkie stated.

  14. Dr. Dave Says:

If Ogletree had tried running instead of looking around, he’d have been over the goal line (1st catch)
    You right ’bout Owusu
    Go Bucs!
