Johnthan Banks Taken To School Today

August 13th, 2013

nunIt was only a matter of time before Johnthan Banks had rookie moments. And the Bucs cornerback apparently had his share this morning when facing the Patriots in practice in Foxborough.

Per Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune, Banks was baptized by one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever line up behind center, future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, so Cummings Twittered.

@RCummingsTBO: Bucs CB Johnthan Banks is getting a real welcome to the NFL schooling today by Tom Brady. Brady hits Aaron Dobson again for a completion

This, in Joe’s eyes, is both good and bad for the Bucs.

First, the good: The quicker Banks learns the NFL ropes the better for the Bucs. The fact he got lit up a few times by Brady should go a long way toward Banks’ NFL education.

Now, here’s the bad: If Banks is getting torched like this, in practice no less, just how much can Banks improve in a month by the time he and the Bucs face a true NFL surgeon of a quarterback, Drew Brees?

It isn’t like Banks won’t get thrown at. You think any offensive coordinator with a sober mind is going to challenge Darrelle Revis when on the other side of the field is a raw, green rookie?

Banks is a talented corner. He’s proven that in practice. But facing the likes of Brady and Brees is a whole different animal than facing a fellow rookie in practice like Mike Glennon.

Banks will be fine. He is a rookie so I am certain he will look like one at times this year. This is to be expected. But with pro’s like Revis and Goldson (sp?) showing him the ropes. Hopefully they will help him limit his mistakes.

  2. BigMacAttack Says:

And everybody has an off day, except Tom Brady.

Banks will be ok. Give it time.

  3. Buc'n Junkie Says:

That’s what preseason is all about, but like Joe suggested, the clock is ticking. He’s running out of precious instructional time if he wants to be the starting corner opposite Revis.

  4. tonytwocents Says:

This doesnt worry me at all. Its f-cking Tom Brady. This week will be good for all our young DBs.

  5. tampabaybucfan Says:

Who was on the other side?…it sure wasn’t Revis….so the good news is that Leonard or whoever was fine. Also Revis’ presence changes the help Banks will get from Goldson.
Lets hope it is a “rope-a-dope” trick and when the regular season comes around Brady throws multiple picks to Banks!!!

  6. neal Says:

This is assuming that banks gets the starting job. i think johnson has a good shot at getting it, and gorrer looks a lot better.

  7. Bobby Says:

Banks will be fine. It’s a little different when real pressure is being applied to the QB and he doesn’t have as much time to throw. These types of situations are not true game like conditions. Friday will tell us more.

  8. RastaMon Says:

    Good….
    in the long run

  9. Celly Says:

i still think there is a good chance that they might use Banks as a 3rd CB…allowing him to come in on 3 WR sets and covering the outside man while the #2 guy covers the slot.

    my assumption.

  10. PRBucFan Says:

I read that he recovered and made some plays as well,

Nonetheless I agree that it’s a great learning experience, he’ll be fine.

  11. joseph mamma Says:

If Banks is our #2 corner and our pass rush sucks, we are in for a long season. Actually if our pass rush sucks, it doesn’t matter who the second corner is they will struggle.

  12. PRBucFan Says:

The sky is already falling huh? smh

  13. OB Says:

Joe, that is why you go to school, you should learn and I believe he is. I would much rather have this in preseason that for real. I just don’t understand why everyone gets upset about rookies that are seeing the HOF players for the 1st time and they expect them to be perfect.

It is just like you and your first dream of Rachel and your dreams now, I am sure that you are much smoother, suave and deboner than your first dreams. Same with rookies, of course I can’t say what was going on in Myron Lewis’ dreams either.

  14. Buc'n Junkie Says:

^^^ What you gotta say about that, Joe? I can’t imagine what the opposite of deboner would be. lol

  15. tampabaybucfan Says:

Who played opposite of Banks…that could be the good news here….was it Leonard….no talk of him breaking down. When Revis is on the field Banks will get help from Goldson.
Banks will be fine…NE needs to be more concerned about Talib.

  16. DallasBuc Says:

Joe- are you guys out there covering training camp in NE? Only seeing scant reporting from Cummings and Holder.

  17. Mr Lucky Says:

    So the question is this:

Who will get more “big plays?”

Will Banks have more INT’s or TD’s given up?

or what REALLY worries me is this,

Will Banks have more INT’s then Freeman?

  18. Couch Fan Says:

If Banks has more INTs then Freeman…. Wouldn’t that be a great thing?

  19. Drew Says:

Joe… An RW wet dream is still a wet
dream until you score the package.

  20. Free's A Boob Says:

If you even think of comparing The Moron to Brady I will puke.

  21. Buc'n Junkie Says:

If Banks has more INTs then Freeman…. Wouldn’t that be a great thing?

That would be a wonderful thing!

  22. jvato24 Says:

dude, its a 7 on 7 which is always favorable for the offense especially against the best qb in the league.

  23. Macabee Says:

This is good! Overnight he will be better as he started to get it as practice went on. Keep in mind, Brady has no real heat in his face in practice. He knows he is not going to be hit.

Banks will know what to expect when the real game is on. And Tom won’t be nearly as relaxed!

  24. Buc1987 Says:

deboner…ha ha ha that shyte cracked me up.

  25. Buc1987 Says:

My uncle who’s a die hard Pats fan used to make fun of the Bucs, by saying the Bucs have nothing but a bunch of thugs on their team. Mentioned players like Talib and Blount. Last time I saw him I had reverse the joke on him. He no answer.

  26. Buc'n Junkie Says:

^^^ I know what OB meant by “deboner”, he meant to say debonair.

  27. Andrew 1 Says:

I hope Banks isnt just gifted the #2 cb spot. It should be a battle between Banks, Leonard Johnson, and Rashaan Melvin and may the best man win.

  28. Andrew 1 Says:

with the runner up taking slot duties.

  29. SeanyMac in SC Says:

It’s only pre-season. The sky is not falling. Calm down already.

  30. Buc'n Junkie Says:

    @Andrew 1

Don’t leave out veteran Michael Adams.

  31. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buc’n Junkie

Oh thats right, thank you. I keep forgetting about that guy for some reason. throw him into that battle as well.

  32. Eric Says:

Dominik always leaves a major exploitable weakness in place. That’s how he cultivates various NFL and franchise records for futility almost every year.

    In multiple categories!

We’re going into the NFC South with a rook corner and no pass rush.

    Good luck with that.

  33. PRBucFan Says:

Yea, it’s the saying “suave and debonair”

  34. Buc1987 Says:

In other news. I was reading on NFL.com about certain players on the verge of being cut. I mean the surprise ones. Nnamdi Asomugha is 4th on the Niners depth chart and from what they are saying is on the bubble. Hard to believe I know. But.

  35. DJ Says:

@Eric Do you know who else has a rookie corner starting and no pass rush, the Atlanta Falcons, two rookies actually. No one mentioning this?

  36. Eric Says:

    @dj

They have Matt Ryan and a head coach and staff with 100% record of making the playoffs.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

and Eric comes back with nonsense to prove his point.

  38. Oahubuc Says:

Brady is in no danger of being hit in the game, either. It’s an accurate simulation.

  39. scubog Says:

I always thought a “deboner” was that really ugly and fat girl who still wears a bikini.

  40. FlBoy84 Says:

Going against Freeman in practice is worlds different than Brady and Brees as well.

  41. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

One could argue that Tom Brady is the best QB in the NFL. Sure, there are others that get better stats, but he is clutch and has more rings than anyone.

So Banks should look bad as a rookie against the best.

  42. KMAC1322 Says:

These were 7 on 7 drills, DBs have no chance, especially against Brady! This was a great experience for Banks and being a former player, nothing is harder for a DB then 7 on 7 drills! Banks wil be fine during a real game, didnt yall watch the first preseason game? He was all over the field!
