How Much Of The Playbook Can Glennon Handle?

August 6th, 2013

Bucs fans will see an awful lot of Mike Glennon Thursday night in the preseason opener. Joe would be surprised if Josh Freeman got more than two offensive series.

But how much of the playbook can Glennon handle? Joe chatted to Glennon about that today, and Joe walked away feeling like Glennon, as he’s said previously, is still deep in a learning curve.

“I’m sure they’ll call plays to my strength, plays I’m comfortable with as of now,” Glennon said.

What kind of plays, Mike?

“Just plays that I’ve run for a long time dating back to college and plays that I’ve had success with here in training camp,” he said.

Glennon’s parents are flying in for his professional debut and he’s excited to learn from the experience.

Joe sure hopes the Bucs’ second-team offensive line holds up for Glennon. Running for his life is not Glennon’s strength. He’s a giant target with pulling-guard speed.

But let’s start him anyway…….foolish buc fans!

  2. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

“Bucs fans will see an awful lot of Mike Glennon tomorrow night in the preseason opener.”

    Isn’t the game on Thursday?

Either way, it will be exciting to see Glennon play. The backup quarterback hasn’t been very interesting to watch in recent years what with Orlovsky and all. I hope the guy lights it up along with Owusu and Melvin.

  3. Buc1987 Says:

I pumped up to see him play. Him and all the new additions MY Bucs have added. 2 more days and I’m sitting in my seats. It’s only pre-season, but thursday is going to be like Christmas to me.

  4. robert Says:

I hope he does well, but I’m not expecting Manning to walk on the field. As long as he is accurate and goes through his progression and does not have the deer in the headlight look we’ll be good.

seriously though…could this article bash him anymore???

  5. Couch Fan Says:

At this point any Buc football will do for me, I just want to see these guys play. The defending champs will be a good measuring stick even though its just pre-season.

  6. Buc1987 Says:

Seriously though was there not 25 or more articles over the summer bashing Freeman?

  7. Couch Fan Says:

I dont see any bashing going on by anyone.

  8. Buc'n Junkie Says:

I hope Glennon struggles, just so I can hear the stupid Freeman haters come up with excuses.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

LOL Junkie…you won’t hear a peep out of robert if that happens.

  10. Macabee Says:

I hope Glennon does well and I think he will. Everybody ought to be pulling for the kid! One, we could use the unnecessary 3rd QB position for another RB or WR position and secondly if Freeman is going to rollout and run more a quality back-up may be needed for a series, a game or to end the season.

Third if he’s a Buc and you’re a Buc fan, it’s unfathomable to think you could do anything else but pull for your player!

  11. Raphael Says:

@ macabee …well said I agree…I think Glennon will have a good game..the guy can throw the football for sure…it is against the defending SB champs tho

  12. Buc'n Junkie Says:

    It’s preseason, I don’t care. I want revenge.

  13. Buc Fan #238 Says:

“I hope Glennon struggles, just so I can hear the stupid Freeman haters come up with excuses.”

That is the same attitude I had with Raheem Morris. Raheem’s fans never let me down!

  14. Buc'n Junkie Says:

“he’s a Buc and you’re a Buc fan, it’s unfathomable to think you could do anything else but pull for your player!”

Yeah Mac, I know that was pointed at me. Funny, you never said that to anyone trashing Freeman.

  15. Couch Fan Says:

Freeman has 4 years of tape that we can decide for ourselves if he is worth trashing or not. Glennon has no such tape. Nobody should be trashing Glennon for any reason yet…. there is a difference

  16. Buc'n Junkie Says:

No-one is trashing Glennon, I just hope he plays like a rookie and Freeman lights it up.

  17. Macabee Says:

    C’mon Buc n’ junkie,

I love ya man. I said that as a matter of principle. It was not prompted by your comment. I read your comment and took it as a dig at the guys who frequently bash Freeman, not at Glennon. He was simply the foil used to make your point.

Everybody here knows I’m a Freeman supporter. I’m just not a Glennon hater. All’s fair in love and war, especially in the back and forth support for your man at JBF. When we go against other teams, blood is thicker than water and we pull for our own.

I’m still on your team, we can’t afford to lose any soldiers (no Winslow pun intended). I hope you understand what I mean!

  18. SteveK Says:

    @ Buc’n Junkie,

Are you a “true” fan: “I Hope Glennon struggles, so the haters..”- Buc’nJunkie

Why would you want our rookie QB to struggle? Oh, ok, so you can feel better about your blind faith for Freeman? That was a clown comment, bro.

  19. SteveK Says:

Freeman needs to step up, Buc’n Junkie, as Freeman has 56 starts to judge him by.

Ripping on Big Bird is not the answer, please take off your Freeman jersey and wash it. Wearing the JF5 jersey must stink after that many consecutive days wearing it.

  20. Buc'n Junkie Says:

Of course Mac, I guess you expect better from me than the neanderthals who constantly keep berating Freeman. Yes, I want Glennon to succeed. Just not to quickly. I want the haters to see why he is a 3rd round QB that isn’t ready for primetime. I certainly don’t want him to fail in the long run, cause then we’ll have to listen to all the Dominik bashers. i.e. realist

  21. Buc'n Junkie Says:

    Yes SteveK

I hope big bird lays one hell of a giant egg just for you pal.

  22. SteveK Says:

    Buc’nJunkie,

I pity the fool that can’t root for his squad to dominate.

You call out the “haters”, as “neanderthals”, and you don’t want Glennon “to succeed too quick”. But, you are opposed the “Dominick bashers”.

Which is is Junkie? Can’t be on both sides of the fence, and you are a “neanderthaol” for thinking you could sling mud at Big Bird because your butt hurt about Freeman’s play coming into question.

  23. Buc Fan #238 Says:

Glennon is not an NFL type starting QB… he doesn’t have the look to be a respected leader. Sorry. No one will ever take him seriously.

Then again, no one takes Freeman seriously either.

  24. Buc'n Junkie Says:

You’re an idiot, not once have I ever slung mud at Mike Glennon. Matter of fact I happen to think the world of him. I just don’t want him to show up Freeman Thursday and give you Freeman haters ammunition for Friday morning. Ok! …Yes, I also can be hateful just like the rest of you. I’m not a republican, a bible thumper that’s supposedly held to a higher standard, expected to do the right things or else be called a hypocrite. I’m a democrat, and in this party anything goes. I’m not held to any moral standard and I can be as big a chump as the rest of you haters.

  25. Bb Says:

Mike is ok, but really freeman needs to work out his bad short throws in games that don’t count, and if he gets hurt we got mikey

  26. Buc1987 Says:

I know where your coming from Junkie. I get it now, it took me a bit to get it.
If Glennon sucks it up it will make quite a few people look like fools for saying if Freeman does bad this season Glennon will come in. Like I said we have not even seen Glennon in a preseason game yet. But some people in here make this pre-determination like he has a shot at taking over Freeman’s job without even watching Glennon play yet. As if they just know without seeing him play.

  27. clafollett Says:

Well Im an independent an things are truly wide open from there. None of which happens tobe about football. Can we keep it on target?

Taking no sides here but do want to point out that Steve actually has a point. I actually hope he does well. I hope he lights it up. He is still going to be the backup. If he does wsll, then there will be less fear of him having to sub for 5 if he goes down.

I want them all to succeed and play well. I want this years cut lists to be very very difficult to do because the these guys are all potential 1st and 2nd string players.

Please take no offense from this. Im just wanting to inject before discussions got heated.

  28. Bucnjim Says:

    Steve,
I’m not sure I get your argument sometimes, but Freeman vs. Glennon at this point is a non issue and shouldn’t even be a discussion. Later this year if Freeman struggles and the team is losing then yes. Glennon is not Kapernick, RGIII or Luck. What isn’t discussed enough is how is the entire defense going to fair because that will be the difference in making the playoffs or not. The only year Freeman had a defense we were 10-6. The other two and a half years you guys like to talk about most the Defense was last or close to it. Where did the Saints finish with a 31st ranked D with future hall of famer Drew Brees? Same as us 7-9! Give that offense a 15th ranked D and we go to the playoffs. It really is just that simple!

  29. Couch Fan Says:

Yes, I want Glennon to succeed. Just not to quickly. I want the haters to see why he is a 3rd round QB that isn’t ready for primetime.

    —————————————————–

Lol so in other words Crack Junkie is sticking up for his man crush because he is upset most have lost confidence in him. I really find it funny that you put so much stock in the fact Glennon is a 3rd round draft pick and in your mind that relegates him to Bench duty and lesser than Freeman…

Pathetic… Dont worry If Glennon proves to only be a 6 win a year QB we’ll all bash him to.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

yikes Junkie..I’m far right. So do me a favor if we tailgate don’t talk politics please.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

Basically Junkie means don’t already pre-judge Glennon as being qualified to unseat Freeman until you see Glennon play first. Which is what a lot of you have done thus far. I don’t know about the pulling for him to suck part though.

  32. Bucnjim Says:

Speaking of tailgating; does anyone park at Al Lopez? My first year back after a 3 year hiatus. Had season tickets from 90-2010 though.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

Watch him play on Thursday, then we’ll all come back in here and continue this Glennon vs Freeman debate on Friday. It’s that simple, or we can continue to debate this tommorow again and get nowhere like usual.

  34. Couch Fan Says:

Lol come on Buc read between the lines. He says “I want Glennon to succeed but not to quickly, he wants us to see why Glennon is a 3rd round draft pick.”

He is basically saying he wants to Glennon to fail because he is a 3rd round pick and in his mind Freeman is superior. HE is the one doing the pre judging… The “haters” as you call them aren’t judging pre-judging Glennon. InFact i dont think even Robert has said Glennon is the franchise QB. But what the “haters” are juding is Freeman’s eratic play…. big difference

It seems people can never stay on point, always got to twist words around to fit there own argument.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

I want Glennon to play better than Freeman actually. If that’s the case and he is a better QB than Josh, then we have an even better team than I’m expecting.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

Couch Fan…I think he just wants to throw it in your faces on Friday. Also does not want to read your comments all week long next week about how Glennon is better than Freeman.

    BTW he’s a rookie and I won’t throw it anyone’s faces.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

Also does not want to read your comments all week long next week about how Glennon is better than Freeman.

^^^which will happen if Glennon plays lights out.

  38. Couch Fan Says:

I’ll never say that over pre-season games lol but yea I can imagine there will be a lot of people who will be calling for him to start, especially if he plays well. Personally, I want the best man to win and dont care which one it is. Im not opposed to starting a rookie either.

  39. Buc'n Junkie Says:

ding ding ding …we got a winner. That is exactly what I’m saying Buc1987

  40. Buc'n Junkie Says:

I want Glennon to succeed and catch on. Just not that fast.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

I want Glennon to succeed and catch on. Just not that fast.

^^^^only because he does not want robert and gang to gloat

It’s not like Junkie has any control over the situation of how well Glennon will play. I don’t think he’s sticking up for his supposed man crush Freeman and hopes Glennon sucks it up to benefit Freeman. I dunno that’s what I’m seeing anyways. Of course he wants Glennon to play well, right Junkie?

Anyhow new article on Freeman up top of JBF cover page. It’s a good one.

  42. SteveK Says:

I want a super bowl trophy this year.

If that means Freeman or Glennon taking their game to the next level, then so be it.

Our defense is going to be pretty good, but our QB play is the 100 million dollar question, so to speak.

  43. Couch Fan Says:

    Sorry but I call bullsh!t

You want Glennon to succeed just not that fast…. that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever

If you want him to succeed why would you not want it as fast as possible? Would that not be in the best interest of the Buccaneers?

Allow me to answer, “Why yes Couch Slug you are correct and that would be in the best interest of the Buccaneers. The team I love… ”

Lol, its pretty clear you want him to fail simply because YOU want to be the one who is right in the end…. or you just got a unbelieveable man crush on Freeman…

Either way your words make no sense.

  44. SteveK Says:

If Freeman could/would/should have asserted himself as the “Franchise QB”, then this wouldn’t be a discussion.

If anything, the Freemanites should look no other than at JF5, as his play has led to a LARGE public following.

  45. Buc'n Junkie Says:

Oh by the way, if Glennon does do poorly Thursday night, I won’t be rubbing it in anyones face unless the Freeman bashing continues and then it will become ammunition. You see, I’m really not an a-hole like a bunch of you are. Freeman throws one errant pass in practice and you got your regular morons revelling in it. I’m getting fed up with our so-called fans that have been told that Freeman is our starting QB and keep slamming him, instead of putting their issues aside and start rally behind him.

If the Coach had told us that he would decide on a QB at the end of preseason, and then chose Glennon. I’d be all for it. But that’s not the case. He has said numerous times that Freeman IS our starting QB. So drop the hate Freeman speech and get on board. If Glennon does really well Thursday, will it fuel the Freeman haters more? Will they come on here and other sites rallying other airheads.

  46. SteveK Says:

    Buc’nJunkie,

What the hell are you whining about?

Freeman bashing? We all want Freeman to do well, and when he does or does not get it done, then we have questions.

39 INTs the last two years is the worst in the league.

25 TD and 6 INT, I long for that guy taking the snaps again. If Freeman can show PROgression instead of REgression, then we will be in the playoffs.

  47. Buc'n Junkie Says:

^^^^ a leopard can’t change it’s spots. There are too many people in here that can testify that you have been one of the top Freeman bashing ringleaders. You wanting Freeman to succeed is a joke. We all know better than that. If that’s the case SteveK, if you really want Freeman to do well, then don’t write or agree with any of the Freeman hate speech from here on out. At least until Freeman starts screwing up. Agreed?

  48. Buc1987 Says:

I think we ought to throw the word haters out of discussion altogether when it comes to Freeman on JBF. Can we just use the word doubters from now on? I really don’t see too many haters on JBF. I see a few doubters though.

  49. SteveK Says:

I love me some Josh Freeman, and I hope he rips sh!t up this year, all year, consistently.

We need Freeman, he is our gatekeeper to the playoffs, no doubt.

However, I will take a more cautious approach to Freeman, much like our front office.

Go Bucs! Go Freeman! If not, go Glennon!

  50. Bucnjim Says:

Sorry, but Mean D is a hater! He would be better served sticking with his real sport Nascar.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

Yes Bucnjim I was going to mention him as a hater, but his comments really don’t count.

  52. Buc'n Junkie Says:

    @SteveK

“I love me some Josh Freeman, and I hope he rips sh!t up this year, all year, consistently”

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ bout boyeee!!!!

There’s a great article just posted about Freeman. Go say some kind words like the rest of us did!

  53. Couch Fan Says:

There are maybe 2 people I would call “haters”… those 2 are pretty obvious so I wont mention there names… but apart from them, I dont think anyone hates Freeman… not believing in him is another story. I can promise you 1 thing… if Freeman gets us to the playoffs ill be his biggest fan!

  54. Buc1987 Says:

if Freeman gets us to the playoffs ill be his biggest fan!

That’s what I’m talking about with Stevek and Couch Fan. They are in the doubters category, and they have their reasons for it. Whether we agree or not on those reasons that’s what gets lost in the shuffle and we battle it out trying to prove who’s right and who’s wrong. We know who the haters are, because their comments are just plain stupid. I think SteveK and Couch just want Freeman to prove US right. Us meaning the ones that defend him daily. If Freeman does that, it won’t mean they are jumping on our bandwagon. So don’t throw it in their face. We ALL want the same thing it’s time for Freeman to put up or (the supporters) shut up. I myself will admit I’m a total idiot if I’m wrong about Freeman this year. I have said the word enigma about Freeman long before I ever found this site or whatever analyst called him that. So I have been in the bashers corner albeit slightly for the last 2 years. Not this season though I see BIG things like fireworks in the sky. Or is that cannons going off left and right I can’t decide.

  55. Buc'n Junkie Says:

^^^^ you see it’s not about who’s wrong or who’s right. The fact is that Coach Schiano, and Dominik, have both said time, and time again, that Josh Freeman is the starting QB. We don’t have a QB controversy according to them. So I say, even though deep down I have the same reservations about Freeman, it doesn’t matter. It’s time I put my questions, and doubts away, and rally behind our QB. Even if it’s only for the sake of creating a fantastic buzz throughout the community. Us fans who comment everyday need to start showing our allegiance to our team and stop whining about that we cannot control. We need harmony. When the team, and it’s players read, hear, and feel the buzz, either written, or vocal from their fans, it can go a long way into raising self confidence. I’m talking mostly about Josh Freeman. He’s our starting QB and he needs his mind right, he needs less negativity.

  56. Buc'n Junkie Says:

^^^^let me also add. If and when the Coach ever decided to bench Freeman I would then rally behind Glennon or even if it’s Orlovsky.

  57. Buc1987 Says:

    Buc’n Junkie says
I’m talking mostly about Josh Freeman. He’s our starting QB and he needs his mind right, he needs less negativity.

Thus is why I’m raising a 20 foot banner after halftime on Thursday Junkie in support of Josh. If your on the Bucs team bench side you will NOT be able to miss it. Even in the nosebleeds. It’s a friggin monster. I will be surprised if I don’t get on the jumbotron. Although that’s not the goal. The goal is for Freeman to see it. I’m going to need a 3rd person to help me hold it up. I hope I can find a fan at halftime to help me. It might be a long walk from where I’m sitting, but it will be worth it all.
