Gerald McCoy: Nose Tackle Coach

August 8th, 2013

The great Xs-and-Os video linked here from NFL Network shows Gerald McCoy having a detailed conversation with former longtime Giants center Shaun O’Hara.

McCoy touches on recurring themes: he didn’t have any veteran to guide him during his rookie season, he’s a hand-on leader, and Greg Schiano’s training camp 2013 is a lot easier than last year’s edition.

McCoy also gets down on the field to show O’Hara how he coaches the “young noseguards.”

Joe actually was present when this video was shot at One Buc Palace, and what was most interesting is how after the camera was turned off, O’Hara and McCoy got into a deep technique conversation and moved back onto the field. O’Hara and McCoy got down in their stances again and worked on moves. Keep in mind this was all after McCoy went through a full practice, signed autographs, and did the video shoot, in the broiling sun.

Then, when McCoy was finished with O’Hara, a teenage fan was harassing him about signing a jersey. The kid reminded McCoy that he had promised the autograph yesterday. McCoy responded by saying, “I came back out there and was looking all over for you.” McCoy was being honest.

The man is one dedicated Buccaneer Man.

Good stuff Joe. Good things are coming people. Very good things. I expect a packed RJS by seasons end. Then good luck getting tickets next season.

I don’t care about all that just sack the qb, double digits this year would be nice

McCoy, Goldson and David taking leadership roles on the D. And Revis just being there gives them someone to strive to be.

VJax leading the Offense, with Penn out for blood and seeming to be helping out with some teachings of his own. Martin just being there gives them the “damn he’s good” factor. Dotson sound like he’s un the serious upswing, as does Zuttah. M Will is a beast.

Forgot to mention a few beasts on the D….but damn this team sound like it’s gonna be a force in the near future with our D, running game and Wr’s!

    Joe,

I was that “teenager” you saw…actually in my 30’s. Even though he did stick to his word, he was VERY unfriendly and as he signed he told his escorthe didnt want to go near any if the fans. Was more worried about getting inside and didnt even respond to my high praises of his play. Was very disapointed actully. Least friendly Buc I have met to date and nit genuine.

Oh and reminding him One time that he was going to sign, is hardly “harrassing”.

@ buc4life24…you should try getting Sapp’s autograph sometime.

I was so mad when Suh didn’t fall to us..

Truth is we couldn’t have drafted a better “Buccaneer Man”, something that Suh does not fit the mold of. He also has the ability to be dominant, more dominant than Suh.

You are in your thirties and still cry about the way a guy treats you after he did you a favor and signed your jersey? Did you ever stop to think about how tired and hot the guy must be? Or how about how many time a day he hears the same crap you were saying to him about his play. Come on man grow up. Autograph are for kids the adults are usually selling the stuff or are sycophant weirdos, I think you fell into that 2nd or 3rd category to McCoy.

  8. buc4life24 Says:

No, just a collector of that stuff. Actually a service member on leave before leaving my family for a yr to go to korea. Nice try though buddy.

  9. PRBucFan Says:

No ones perfect, and EVERYONE has bad days.

I imagine that after having to do it everyday of his life since he’s joined the league it gets a little tiring to say the least.

Stinks that you had to catch him on such a day.

Ya, i hear ya. Not losing sleep over it, just thought i would share since i was mentioned in the article and it was a little exagerated. Headed to the game and glad I get my dose of Bucs football. No worries…

You’re not the 1st, so suck it up buttercup.

Oh, I really do care about what you do, and it’s appreciated, now walk in McCoy’s shoes and appreciate that.

You got his autograph(who really gives a F about that, lol).

I hear ya. Just shared the experience since i was mentioned in the story and it was exagerated a bit…..definetly not losing sleep over it. Headed to the game to get my dose of Buc ball before leaving this great country, even if its preseason! Go bucs!!!

buc4life24 – “Told his escort he didn’t want to go near any of the fans.” Dude, realize that’s what the “nice-guy” players do, since they don’t want to tell the fans no themselves and upset anyone. The Bucs have double sessions every day but only the first is open to media and fans. McCoy very well may have been late for a trainer’s-room appointment, or a doctor’s appt., or scheduled lifting session.

Unfriendly? He signed your shirt, and he obviously engaged with you directly after a long day. What more do you want? It’s pushy guys like you who give fans a bad name.

@buc4life24 – Aside from getting your general age incorrect, you might want to re-read what was written here. Joe did not exaggerate a thing.

    Dictionary definition of harass:
