BSPN’s Mike Golic: Bucs 7-9
August 6th, 2013Joe’s almost always up for sharing national media types’ prognostications for the Bucs. Are they worth much? No. But it’s interesting to gauge the outsiders’ views collectively.
While there are lots of Schiano fans out there, Josh Freeman doesn’t have as many.
His consistency, along with the Bucs’ pass rush, is questioned by former defensive tackle turned BSPN radio voice Mike Golic. Speaking on his Mike and Mike show, Golic has called a 7-9 season for the Bucs — and an 8-8 mark for the Panthers. (You can listen to the audio here.)
It’s going to be a common theme: analysts not down on the Bucs but not willing to rank them as a winner in the tough NFC South. The Vegas oddsmakers, the guys who really do their homework, feel the same way.
August 6th, 2013 at 8:44 am
Golic is so far removed from the reality of football that his opinion is only slightly more valid than his know-nothing partner, Mike Greenberg. Their show is far more about schtick than substance. How else can you explain the defenseless Panthers with an offense called by Mike Shula being ranked ahead of anybody? This is Rivera’s last year at the head of the Carolina ship and it won’t go well.
The Bucs will challenge for the NFC South division crown, plain and simple. They have too much talent and too much focus to fall into the myriad of 7-9/9-7 teams.
August 6th, 2013 at 8:56 am
Dude, the Panthers had the 10th ranked defense last year, were 9th in sacks and added more teeth on D in the draft. If they force a few more turnovers this year, Carolina will have a GREAT defense. And the whole team finished strong.
August 6th, 2013 at 8:57 am
Question for the homies, when was the last time the Buccaneers had back to back winning seasons?
August 6th, 2013 at 8:59 am
I’m glad everyone doubts this team. The Bucs will surprise a lot of people. Josh, of course, will need to be more consistent, but I think he is capable of doing that. Personally, I am glad the Vegas oddsmakers are down on the Bucs. I was there in May and they had the Bucs as 50-1 to win the SB. Of course, I took that bet. I hope to return for my winnings.
August 6th, 2013 at 9:06 am
Gruden’s last 2 seasons were both winning seasons at 9-7 his final 2 years.
I love hearing the supposed experts predict records then go back at the end of the season to see how wrong they were.
These guys are just guessing like all of us fans.
August 6th, 2013 at 9:11 am
Blahblahblah freeman blahblahblah pass defense blahblahblah run defense didnt matter…
Coming from two guys who work for a network where the Bucs are mentioned twice a year and all point made are about last year. Yeah, really reputable source here.
@kennedy will be a tough team to rush against but their secondary is still utter garbage. Def on the cusp of being good, but they will still be passed on easily

Predicting last year’s results? Bold move.
August 6th, 2013 at 9:18 am
Im a realist. This team is somewhere around 10 wins (+- 1).
August 6th, 2013 at 9:22 am
it’s all in how well we start the season. the early bye week does not help us down the stretch though!!
August 6th, 2013 at 9:23 am
Funny how things look when not wearing the rose colored glasses that many posters on JBF wear!
August 6th, 2013 at 9:26 am
“Golic has called a 7-9 season for the Bucs…”
Hey! We’re getting better daily in the national media standings!!!!
(rolls eyes)
Mike Golic is a big goof ball. Just ad him to the list of surprised people this year.

I’m going even further. I say they make it to the NFC Championship game and might even come one bad ref call from the Superbowl.
I’m the only one predicting this at present.
GO BUCS!
August 6th, 2013 at 9:32 am
You know… we have been talking about the same crap all year long… maybe football isn’t that tough to figure out? Maybe there isn’t a need for 10 articles a day re-hashing the same ole thing?
Folks… JBF and it’s followers ARE the definition of insanity. Repeat it over and over and over… 🙂
August 6th, 2013 at 9:34 am
Last year I picked 5, Bucs won 7, shoulda won 10
Going with 8 this time
Wouldn’t mind bein’ wrong again…
August 6th, 2013 at 9:34 am
What the hell does Disney know. Go Bucs. Shock the world
August 6th, 2013 at 9:38 am
Whether the pundits are correct or not is anybody’s guess. But I understand why the skeptics exist. I have got to admit myself, I have never seen a team with so much talent and so many issues. It is the only reason why I too am hesitant to outright predict a playoff appearance now.
Healthwise we have Nick’s toe, Joseph’s knee, Revis’s rehab, Clayborn’s knee and now groin, and Stocker’s always health issues.
Then we have these questions: The biggest question is Will Josh Freeman be consistent? Who is going to return kicks and punts? Who is going to start at nose tackle? Who will be the third receiver? Who will be the back-up RB? Will we have a receiving TE? Who will start opposite Revis (RCB)? Will we have a decent pass rush and who will be in DE rotation? Who will start at SLB? And I’m sure I forgot a few!
Shouldn’t a playoff team have most of these questions answered by now and is just trying to perfect the scheme? Too many issues and questions for many who like the Bucs to be comfortable predicting a winning season. Murphy’s Law and the proverbial Law of Averages says that everything is not going to break in our favor!
But worst to first is a real phenomenon so it can be done, but we may need a little luck too! Go Bucs!
August 6th, 2013 at 9:47 am
@ macabee
I think every single team has these same roster and depth issues really.
I just wish ours was not at QB or DL.
August 6th, 2013 at 9:49 am
There is no such thing as a “realist” when it comes to predicting a teams final record. Its all just a big guess…. Now with that being said, common sense tells you that you can’t fault anyone for thinking that a team that finished 7-9 the previous year is anything other than a 7-9 team until they get back on the field and prove there not, even despite what appears to be a good off season.
With that being said, not sure how anyone can think Carolina will be better than us. We swept them last year, on paper I think we have a much better team…. To each there own I guess.
August 6th, 2013 at 9:49 am
As of today the Bucs have the same record and the same chance of wining the SB as everyone else in the NFL. Anyone can predict rain, hail, or aliens from Vol landing here tomorrow, no one knows until it happens. Golic is paid to be an ex-jock goof and Greenberg his geek punching bag, they are Abbott and Costello without the comedic talent.
August 6th, 2013 at 10:05 am
Yeah, that Mike Golic knows nothing about football. I mean, the day before the 2012 season began he predicted the Baltimore Ravens to win the Super Bowl. What a joke he is!

August 6th, 2013 at 10:11 am
Predictions are worthless. Injuries can make the best team look bad. I believe we have to do exactly what every coach tells their players. One game at a time. Right now we can only focus on the Jets game. Let’s make sure we travel to New York with everybody healthy and then we can see what we have.
August 6th, 2013 at 10:18 am
BAsically the talking heads on ESPN and the NFL network the last few days all the Bucs between 5-9 wins.
Basically they doubt the pass rush, think the run defense last year was a fluke stat, and don’t buy into Freeman
Personally, I think the Bucs are going to prove them wrong and have a 10 win season.
August 6th, 2013 at 10:23 am
That is about right given Dominik’s .37 winning percentage, which equates to six wins or so.
August 6th, 2013 at 10:45 am
I’m don’t do predictions…. How can the media say we are not better then we were last yr? Go bucs
August 6th, 2013 at 11:22 am
@lightningbuc
You sound like a fair weather fan. Go away, we can do without your so-called support.
August 6th, 2013 at 11:25 am
Playoffs or bust for this team in 2013.
Time to win.
August 6th, 2013 at 11:45 am
This is understandable… I would think (hoping very strongly) that the Bucs can win at least 7 or 8 games this season but when 1 of your team’s ? is at the starting QB position, that is never a good thing!
August 6th, 2013 at 11:50 am
I think it says a lot when they mention that the week 1 Jets game is the only exciting game… These guys are pathetic. As awful as the Jets are, they’re still in New York, and still get more attention than a talented up and coming team.
They basically just copied what the Bucs were at the end of last year and pasted it into this radio show. No research, no real analysis. Nice work, fellas.
August 6th, 2013 at 12:11 pm
NOBODY cares how things look from the national media. Why? Because they are ALWAYS wrong. You can read and watch everything they say about this team and that team. They are ALWAYS wrong. Of course Vegas is going to have MY Bucs as a long shot to win the SB this year. No one on JBF expects a friggin SB or something.
You fans need to look at your team on paper and come to your own conclusions. Be realistic about it too. Throw out your homerism and be realistic about it.
I’ve already done that. I came up with 2013 NFC South Division Champs. Sure let Atlanta and N.O. be hungry all they want. What it all boils down to, to me is this, no one sees us coming. I’m sure the Facons are hungry and stacked to the hilt with talent. This season I predict a major setback in their quest for the SB when they settle for a wild card.
MY Bucs have to win and keep winning to get respect. Many of these and I mean MANY of these analysts go by what took place last season from team to team. That’s all they have to go on. I’m sure some will look at the additions added to each team in the offseason and what not. The only thing that I look at regarding last season when it comes to MY Bucs is this. All the friggin close losses, that I predict will turn into wins this season.
The question I ask my own self is this. What makes me think I know more than the national media when it comes to my team? The answer is, because like Joe I eat, sleep and breathe Bucs football. That does not make me look at them threw rose colored glasses like lightningbuc would suggest. It means I know more about them then the national media.
I’ll be here all season long keepin it real for people. Many skeptics will soon see that I’m right.
August 6th, 2013 at 12:19 pm
Golic had the Bucs going 11-5 in 2011…what do you lightningbuc have to say about that?
August 6th, 2013 at 12:24 pm
What a bold prediction.
August 6th, 2013 at 12:58 pm
Buc1987,
But what makes you think you know more about the Bucs’ opponents than the guys in Vegas or the national media?
August 6th, 2013 at 1:00 pm
@ lightningbuc…I don’t know more about the Bucs opponents than they do. We both know just as much about them.
Now answer my question : Golic had the Bucs going 11-5 in 2011…what do you lightningbuc have to say about that?
August 6th, 2013 at 1:10 pm
Answer : Golic looked at the Bucs previous record from 2010 at 10-6 and predicted the Bucs to go 11-5 in 2011. Point proven they look at the previous season and base their predictions on that.
August 6th, 2013 at 1:30 pm
The Ravens went all the way to the AFC Championship game in 2011 and lost to the Pats 23-20. I’m sure it was a real hard pick for Golic to make that SB prediction, he must be a guru. (sarcasm)
August 6th, 2013 at 2:02 pm
I am so incredibly sick of hearing “well worst in the pass means no one runs so thats a bad stat.” F*CK OFF!!! How about best in the league at yards per carry. Apparently if your a dumb over payed talking head you can’t look that far into a stat. I mean it does take 3 whole ckicks on nfl.com to see that stat. Morons.
August 6th, 2013 at 2:18 pm
Golic even said it himself. “When a team is 1st in one thing and last in another, you don’t look to deep into that.” Then he said they told him to have his picks in at a certain time then they changed it to his dismay. Those two pieces of evidence suggests to me he didn’t do his research and mailed it in. His prediction = VOID
August 6th, 2013 at 4:28 pm
@lighteningbuc in that same link you posted Golic had the Eagals in the NFC championship game…….whoops
August 6th, 2013 at 7:40 pm
Golic predicted 3-13 for the 1010 season if I remember correctly. Those guys spend most of the time talking about the Jets anyway, so who cares what they think. I am glad the Bucs are flying under the radar, and I think that they will certainly be better than last year! The future looks very bright for our young team.
August 6th, 2013 at 9:16 pm
The only reason these media guys are making low predictions are because the Saints and Falcons are in the same division. They seem to forget we can beat both.
