“A Little Disappointed, Not Discouraged”
August 25th, 2013Greg Schiano is not all rosy about his sputtering offense, but he says he can see why it will be successful. “A little disappointed, not discouraged,” was Schiano’s take on the offense this afternoon.
Joe also can see how the Bucs offense could move the chains; Pound the rock with Doug Martin and get the mega-millions receivers to catch balls that hit them in the hands. That should at least get the Bucs what they had last season.
Joe’s not sure what Greg Schiano likes on offense specifically, but the leader of the New Schiano Order can see success through the choppy seas of doubt and disappointment.
“Yeah, I wish we would have played better on offense but I can see how we’re going to. The worst thing is when you’re looking at that vision and you’re saying, ‘I don’t know how we’re going to do this.’ I do see how we’re going to do it,” Schiano said.
The head coach acknowledged there will be plenty of preparation — and wishful thinking.
“Turn up the stakes a little bit [on opening day] and hopefully we’ll perform,” Schiano said.

I Am an eternal optimist, I know… But I see us clicking, throwing the ball, catching the ball, running the ball…one thing is for sure… Rex Ryan will throw everything at Josh, and I think Josh will be ready…if not I will be the first one headed to the skyway..
August 25th, 2013 at 3:10 pm
Honestly, if the receivers caught the balls that hit them in the hands, last night would have looked a whole lot different.
I mean, Freeman 6-16?
Glennon 3-9?
You can’t tell me they were all just awful throws.
And what happened to our “best O-line” in football?
Hasn’t Freeman been sacked like 5-6 times in 3 quarters of playing time??
Honestly, I’m not surprised Freeman and Glennon were struggling the O-Line wasn’t blocking and the receiver’s weren’t catching.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:11 pm
Hopefully being the keyword. I do sill fee like Revis will have a major impact, if he’s healthy. I’m iffy on our pass rush but we havent seen our starts for a full game yet, plus the addition to Revis should help.
Yesterday I saw a lot of sack oppertunities that were just a half second to late. Here’s to hoping.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:14 pm
@walter, I just think they are focused on trying different things. RB James missed several blocks, Carimi was a swinging gate, the TE # 82 let the Sweeney guy go right by him…. I think everything is being held back and they are concentrating on evaluating position and talent…
What interesting is nobody has tape on Revis , so the Jets can’t be sure what to do.. I like it
August 25th, 2013 at 3:19 pm
@Raphael
Oh, I definitely don’t think they were trying to win, or even evaluate Freeman. I felt yesterday was more about creating pressure on the QB and finding out who our #2 RB is.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:19 pm
Ah the old look horrific holdback trick. Fools em every time.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:20 pm
Watched the game recorded and hit the rewind plenty of times. Freeman made 4 bad passes and our receivers had a combined 5 drops while freeman was in that would have added up to about 65 to 70 more yards of offense with some first downs. Perfect passes by josh by the way. Don’t see why everyone is pilling on him when the receivers should be held just as accountable for dropped passes as josh with bad throws.

I agree with WALTER
The Bucs struggles appear to be most prominent IN THE TRENCHES! The Offensive line has been allowing free rushers to assault the pocket and the Defensive line seems to be impotent rushing QBs AGAIN!
I see disaster on the horizon and it will not be because of Josh Freeman, but will it result in Freeman’s departure and the Buccaneers yet again a perennial basement dweller.
What has the organization been evaluating? Is our behemoth left guard history?
August 25th, 2013 at 3:24 pm
when will you joe realize that the rock star GM cant draft .And with no pass rush this team has big problems you can have all the pro bowl DB’S you want no pass rush it ill be bad ,#5 is not a good QB yes strong arm but the accuracy of a broken compass, pocket presence of a stuffed animal.good luck joe
August 25th, 2013 at 3:26 pm
@ Kevin Schmidt …..Thank you ! Finally some sanity around here ….:)
August 25th, 2013 at 3:29 pm
the O line has me the most worried. is there any chance Nicks could be ready by opening day?
August 25th, 2013 at 3:32 pm
if not then would should probably pick us up a LG when the cut downs happen.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:36 pm
Does anyone want to talk about those two goof ball “toss plays” the Bucs ran that were both sniffed out faster than a bucket KFC in front of Kristie Allie?
August 25th, 2013 at 3:39 pm
Loos like Freeman has made SI’s All-Overated team:

August 25th, 2013 at 3:42 pm
^^^ the one where we were in bunch formation? lol yea… worked like a charm.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:43 pm
Yea we were trying a lot of trick (or what seemed to be trick plays) that I’ve personally never seen us run before. None of them really amounted to anything lol
August 25th, 2013 at 3:44 pm
@Pewter Bullion
That doesn’t even make sense though, Freeman hasn’t been valued since 2010, almost every analyst out there just assumes the Freeman is going to suck this year.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:45 pm
I honestly haven’t seen that toss play work since Warrick Dunn was playing for FSU.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:49 pm
^^^ lol yep. if i remember correctly one even looked like naked toss where our oline line slid to the right and we tossed the ball out to the left with nobody out there blocking in front of our RB. at the end of it the defense said thank you.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:49 pm
@Adam L
It’s stuff like that which makes me feel like the offense we’ve seen so far is nothing but a mirage. Sure, Schiano may be stubborn, but he isn’t stupid, he knows that in the NFL, coaches don’t last long if they don’t win.
August 25th, 2013 at 3:55 pm
@ Walter
your right. its got to be.
August 25th, 2013 at 4:00 pm
and what was up with one of the d lineman kicking Josh Freeman while he was in the pocket? anyone remember that? he should have been ejected for that.
August 25th, 2013 at 4:07 pm

It’s not too late to get some playmakers in here 🙂

@PRBucFan
Yeahhhhh Buddy!!
August 25th, 2013 at 5:17 pm
I hope our offense looks so sluggish by design. Who knows what Sullivan and McNulty have up their sleeves for the regular season.
But the fact remains that we are still short on offensive weapons. Sure, we have a good 1-2 receiver tandem, and a top-flight every-down running back. But we have nothing at TE and no 3rd receiver.
A couple of decent tight ends and several potentially very good receivers will get cut by their teams in the next 144 hours or so. Get busy Dom.

test
August 25th, 2013 at 5:26 pm
@Raphael
I don’t usually resort to ad hominem attacks and I really do admire your enthusiasm and optimism but this statement has to be the dumbest thing ever typed on this website.
“What’s interesting is nobody has tape on Revis , so the Jets can’t be sure what to do.. I like it”
Are you insinuating that the Jets are unaware of Revis’ abilities and skills?
All of their defensive and offensive coaches will be staring at him through binoculars as they test him and they will instantly know whether to attack him or avoid him. Nobody knows Revis better than the Jets.
He will not be a savior even if he reverts back to All World status. He will simply become Revis Island and nobody will throw in his direction.
I would like to be a fly on the wall in the Glazer’s inner sanctum. They’re probably plotting on what they can do to contribute to the Jadaveon Clowney Project (JCP) while maintaining a level of deniability about tanking the season. After, losing to the Jets and then the Saints they can hold a press conference and give an official vote of confidence for both Freeman and Schiano. That should do it. JCP is on!

August 25th, 2013 at 5:28 pm
I think it’s dissapointing as a whole. We are still inexperienced and think on the oline and front 7. Both nicks and Joseph suffer serious injuries last year that will linger , yet we get no one to improve the depth inside?
I love clayborns tenacity but he’s also coming off a knee injury. No back up plan there? Bowes has been injury prone with a recent Achilles tear which affects the burst of pass rushers (ask Shawn Merriman how things went after he tore his Achilles). We have some young rookies with talent but were relying on them too much!
I think this is dominiks last hurah with josh freeman following him out te door. If we tank I hope we land a shot at Teddy or clowny.
August 25th, 2013 at 5:29 pm
WTF? Why aren’t comments going through?
August 25th, 2013 at 5:34 pm
Because these filters are ridiculous lol
August 25th, 2013 at 5:35 pm
Like the Jets don’t have tape on Revis – come’on… ;0P
August 25th, 2013 at 5:38 pm
If we can’t put any pressure on the qb then idk what it means to have Revis.
August 25th, 2013 at 5:39 pm
Freeman stinks. I’d rather watch the rookie make rookie mistakes than the 5th year QB make rookie mistakes.
August 25th, 2013 at 5:47 pm
Week 1 is huge for the Buccaneers. Will we or won’t we?
We should be able to destroy the Jets, especially if Geno Smith is forced to start. During that game, I will be looking at two different things, QB comparative play, and D-Line comparative play. In short, QBs and pass rush.
If the Jets beat the Bucs, and if Geno Smith outplays Freeman, what do you do? Is our pass rush on par with the Jets? What do you do if the Bucs fail to get 30 team sacks this year?
There are guys in the league dropping 20 sacks seasons, and our Bucs have not have a 10 sack guy since the great Simeon Rice.
August 25th, 2013 at 5:49 pm
In what world does Freeman instill confidence in anyone watching? Zero pocket awareness, looks lost, no command, etc…
Sorry guys, but he just isn’t good. I don’t want to hear this crap about his stats last year either. The last 4 games of the year into this season is what we currently have as our QB and it is not average. Average I would actually take. This is just lost. Thats the word that keeps coming to mind. Lost. Confidence lost.
August 25th, 2013 at 5:58 pm
The buc fan in me wants nothing but an awesome Season for te bucs. But watching the Lethargic performances lately, I can’t help but be concerned.
I like schiano as a head coach but I don’t know if he survives a losing season bc mark dominik won’t. Dom’s one foot out te door right now. So is josh freeman. If you had to ask me, the bucs look like one of the worst teams out there in preseason.
August 25th, 2013 at 6:07 pm
@ Miguel el attacko …maybe you should think about it…have you seen Revis play this year ? Nobody has..
August 25th, 2013 at 6:22 pm
I think our d-line will be fine. Clayborn is looking strong again, McCoy is looking better than ever, and Spence is starting to prove that he can not only match Miller’s effectiveness as the tilted nose, but also add some speed and pursuit to the position. Bowers may be a bit of a question mark, but between him and Te’o Nesheim and Gholston, and also rotating Means and Trevor Scott on that side if needed, I think we’ll be solid.
If healthy, Revis will be the best player on the field at any given time. However, since we face Brees and Brady in the first three weeks of the season, they will test his readiness. Regardless, let’s hope Banks or Johnson can hold down their side. Both of our safeties are big hitters with suspect coverage skills, but Goldson can support the right corner and allow Barron to play more in the box.
Lavonte David looks ready to play even better than last year. I’m not sold on Foster in coverage, but he still makes plays, and I think he feeds off David’s energy. We don’t have a great SLB but Casillas and Watson are both capable.
Also, last season we faced 10 opponents with offenses ranked in the top 10 the previous season. This year, we only face six such opponents. So, we could see a huge season from the defense.
But the offense is a huge concern. Freeman looks as lost as ever, we have no major play-makers at tight end or third receiver, and we play five teams that had top-10 defenses last year. Sure, we put up good offensive numbers last year, but we played a lot of crappy defenses last year.
The way I see it, our starting defense should be very good. But with continuing health issues on the o-line, and continuing inconsistency from the QB, and lacking a full complement of offensive weapons, reaching the playoffs will be daunting.
I still think we’ll make it, though.
August 25th, 2013 at 6:47 pm
The General Manager has destroyed this team,by not making decisions and listening to college coaches. Every time a player talk back to this coach they are cut. The word has spread around the N.F.L. that this coach has lost his locker room and can not deal with pro football players.
August 25th, 2013 at 6:58 pm
Lol so what are we thinking people, 4-12, 3-13?
August 25th, 2013 at 6:59 pm
11-5
August 25th, 2013 at 7:11 pm
LMAO What are you talking about? I havent heard a thing about Schiano losing the locker room. What have I missed?
August 25th, 2013 at 7:21 pm
Lol ….Must be medical grade pot
August 25th, 2013 at 7:56 pm
11-5 Now that is crazy with scarecrow at the QB….if he only had a brain…6-10 is my prediction. Who are we gonna beat with Free at the helm? After Saturday I’m not sure even the hapless Jets are a lock.
August 25th, 2013 at 8:03 pm
The offense was much better when Josh Freeman was allowed to run. Let him loose!!
August 25th, 2013 at 8:04 pm
Oops…sorry to all you Free fans hapless means sorry ass losers.
August 25th, 2013 at 8:06 pm
Lmao @ free’s a moron ….get ready to eat some crow , you miserable dolt !
August 25th, 2013 at 8:08 pm
@Doc, what you are saying is complete BS!
I’m sure IF there was talk of this(Schiano losing the locker room)around NFL circles, Joe would’ve gotten that juicy tidbit way before you and would’ve had it plastered all over this site 1000 times already!! Who are you to say this as fact? There has not really been anybody since Winslow to down the coach in a negative way, I know Preston Parker threw some jabs, but it was indirect and remember, he was cut. Schiano has said more than once that he’s mellowed out after last year, he HAD to be a sob to change the country club culture atmosphere left behind by Raheem Morris. I think Schiano is a little like Bellichek he may be a jerk, but at the end of the day, if they win, the players will love him.
August 25th, 2013 at 9:14 pm
Look at the team as a whole, zero sacks, no touchdowns, 5 sacks, dropped footballs, no tight ends or defense’ ends . This team has no second team player because the G,M is overpaying for everyone that he signs, but he makes the player’s that have been on this team wait to be paid.
August 25th, 2013 at 9:25 pm
@Doc….quit posting until you know what you are talking about. Zero sacks and no TD’s?? We had a DE get 3 sacks last night. Lavonte David got one in week one. Don’t be stupid. Brian Leonard scored a TD right after the turnover last night. Things haven’t been pretty and the offense has looked very shaky but not the picture you’re painting.
August 25th, 2013 at 9:33 pm
Lmao ….drugs are popular tonight …. Lol @ doc
August 25th, 2013 at 9:41 pm
Haha everyone who is still bashing free and the bucs are loser buc fans. Be grateful we’re not the browns. Btw it’s pre season incase any of you hypersensitive pussies forgot. Douchebags
August 25th, 2013 at 9:56 pm
If the Jets suck that bad and we beat the hell out of them, just what did we prove? That once again Josh and company can beat a garbage team? We will show our true colors when we beat top teams.
August 25th, 2013 at 9:58 pm
Good thing we won another training camp championship. Fifth in a row for Dominik.
August 26th, 2013 at 12:54 am
The Bucs should at least take a look at BJ Daniels from San Francisco! He has a little Russel Wilson in him and Schiano should know him pretty well from the Big East! What you think Joe? And fellow Bucs fans??
August 26th, 2013 at 5:50 am
The sad thing for Freeman is this is the last year on his contract
So he has to perform regardless if he is a buc next year.
August 26th, 2013 at 11:45 am
You guys have two weeks to clean up this mess. Get to work!
August 26th, 2013 at 1:51 pm
Id stay as far away from BJ Daniels as possible, he is NOT a QB by nature, at USF he did make some big plays, but they were all draped around a bunch of horrific play at QB, no not interested in the former USF Bull, at least I hope they’re not. Hey if they didn’t take Selvie, who is looking all world with Dallas, then Daniels is out of the question.
