Spence Drops A Sapp Comparison
July 19th, 2013Rookie nose tackle Akeem Spence is somewhat Warren Sapp-like with his gift of gab.
No, Spence isn’t crazy arrogant like Sapp, not yet anyway. But Spence is fun and engaging, and there’s almost always a giant smile plastered across his face.
Spence, however, sees another similarity to himself and the legendary No. 99, who enters the Pro Football Hall of Fame next month. Spence explained to Joe and other media yesterday.
“Like Warren Sapp, you know what I’m sayin’, we’re like the same built, same everything,” Spence said. “I try to mimic some of his stuff. But you know the scheme is kinda different, but I’m still trying to do it for the short guys around the league, man.”
Joe admits it’s hard not to want to slap a rookie fourth-round pick who dares to remotely compare himself to Sapp. Joe’s not sure if Spence realizes Sapp was a coveted first-round pick who ran a freakish 4.69 40 time at the NFL Scouting Combine. Spence chugged out a 5.15-second time.
Regardless, Joe can tell Spence, who stands 6-1, 207 pounds, is just excited, eager and yungry, rather than cocky and foolish.
Joe likes the attitude, and Joe will leave you with Spence’s take on the looming start of training camp.
“I know that first day we put on the pads its going to be intense. Scratch claw, do whatever, bust somebody’s butt, do whatever you gotta do,” he said.

At 6’1″ 207 pounds Spence is lighter then our safety 🙂

Dear lord Joe I hate that word yungry. Your giving me flashbacks man, bad ones. As for Spence’s comments. Good for him, if he wants to aspire to be like Sapp on the field. Sapp was extremely special though. So if he strives to reach that level he’s got a long way to go. As for my Bucs I hope he gets there.

Enough of the “Youngry” PLEASE! For three years I had to listen to that idiot.

What does any of this have to do with Freeman v Glennon?
Dance with the chick who brung ya.
July 19th, 2013 at 11:45 am
Can’t fault Spence for aspiring to be Sapp. I like his attitude and powerlifting work ethic. Less will be expected since he was a 4th round pick. I will be please if he matches Booger’s performance.
I would be willing to bet that he will exceed expectations.
I like that “Sapp-like slap he gave Zuttah”
July 19th, 2013 at 11:57 am
I certainly hope he is NOT 207 pounds. lol
The guy is confident, if nothing else.
July 19th, 2013 at 11:57 am
@mpmalloy
There is no Freeman v. Glennon
First it’s Glennon v. Orlovsky
July 19th, 2013 at 12:11 pm
I’d like to see Joe slap him too.

Akeem Spence, DT – He kept his numbers from the combine, but weighed 306 at the pro day. He also ran the short shuttle, doing so in 4.60 seconds.
July 19th, 2013 at 12:27 pm
I’m anxious to see Spence go against Zuttah when the bullets go live. That rematch has been a long time coming. Hope they match them up in th Oklahoma drill at the night practice at Ray Jay.

Akeem Spence, sounds like an Ideal tackle for the 4-3 stunt. Best article I’ve seen on the subject. http://www.bucsnation.com/2013/5/4/4290148/the-4-3-tilted-nose-tackle-history-scheme-and-the-buccaneers
Ok I understand that Chuck Noll & Defensive line coach George Perles designed the 4-3 stunt. And that Bud Carson was the originator of the Cover 2 shell (Aka Tampa 2). And “Mean Joe” Greene developed the titled nose alignment. Then later John Randle(Still pissed we didn’t sign him as a UDFA) played a lot of titled nose in Minnesota with Dungy; and dominated.
So since the titled nose is an aggressive technique based on movement and quickness(Mean Joe & John Randle). Not soaking up blockers, or holding ground.(Per:Andy Russell & Chuck Noll). Wouldn’t GMC better suited for the position?

Love this kid’s fire and the way he talks about getting after it. Hope he can back it up. If so would be a huge asset. Can’t wait to see him play.
July 19th, 2013 at 12:46 pm
Joe are you saying Spence dropped a 100 pounds since pro day? Or was it just a typo?

Buc1987
Are you talking about the same guy?
July 19th, 2013 at 1:04 pm
At 207, he is probably the smallest DT in the league and should be a little faster then his 40 time. But I am sure he will play closer to 307 and get after it for the Bucs!!!
July 19th, 2013 at 1:25 pm
Can Spence dunk a basket ball?
Case closed.
Warren was a unique athelete.
July 19th, 2013 at 1:39 pm
Warren was a unique athlete, no question, and a major POS off the field too.
July 19th, 2013 at 1:41 pm
We need to stop with this “he’s just a 4th round pick” and his talking smack. Any of you guys ever heard of John Randle? Randle went undrafted and only weighed 240lbs when he left college. He eventually bulked up to 280lbs. And he talked a lot of smack. He’s only a DT HOFer. Spence just needs to get some face paint!
July 19th, 2013 at 1:41 pm
@ Bob yes I am talking about the same guy. You do have google on your internet right? If not here I’ll link it. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1691215/akeem-spence
July 19th, 2013 at 1:42 pm
If he plays like Sapp? He can call himself junior all day long. But to compare “yourself” to Sapp and then not back it up could be considered an insult. Spence has some mighty big shoes to fill now because I won’t ever forget this. Just saying so doesn’t make you Warren Sapp. Prove it!

@Joe
Apologize for the multiple post Sir. Something strange was going on with the site today. Post were not showing up.
July 19th, 2013 at 1:58 pm
207?? Jesus, our run D is f***** this year..
July 19th, 2013 at 1:58 pm
LUV:
Joe’s spam filter must have picked up the multiple posts as spam. No problem. It happens.
July 19th, 2013 at 2:07 pm
307 307 why do you people keep posting comments about 207? Can you people not press the link? Let me hold your hand for you like a kindergartner. The link is red, click the link first and read his TRUE weight. Then make more comments about how he weighs 207. SMH.
July 19th, 2013 at 2:09 pm
Also remember when Dungy was in Minnesota they drafted
NT/DT Brad Culpepper-Height: 6-1 Weight: 275 lbs.
(Draft: 1992 -Round: 10 / Pick: 264)
He carved out a pretty good damn career for a guy drafted in the 10th round.
That Defense line was loaded-John Randle, Keith Millard, Al Noga, and Chris Doleman. ++ DT Henry Thomas Sack (93.5 Career sacks)..They just kept plugging guys in.
July 19th, 2013 at 2:11 pm
looking at that photo, i’d say his arms alone are about 207 pounds
July 19th, 2013 at 2:12 pm
*yes i know it was a typo, just amusing myself
July 19th, 2013 at 2:28 pm
If he’s half the tackle that Sapp was, then we got a steal.
I can remember watching a game on the road against the Dixie Chicks… back in the hey day of the Defense.
Atlanta had the ball, and was backed up on their own goal line.
This allowed the film crew to show the action from the perspective of the QB, since their was a camera right behind him.
Immediately after the snap, Sapp was around the offensive line, and in the QB’s face.
I swear, I have NEVER seen a man that large move that fast… ever.
It was honestly both impressive and scary.
July 19th, 2013 at 2:35 pm
I just felt he was comparing size & body style, not anything at all saying he’s as good as , or the next coming of, Sapp. Just having fun with the ‘short guys of the NFL’ concept. I loved Sapp as our player, & liked his cocky, brash attitude off the field, too, but if , or anyone else gets insulted by theses comments, they need a life!!
July 19th, 2013 at 2:48 pm
Spence is 300 pounds, I love the way someone made up that number of 207
July 19th, 2013 at 5:58 pm
Friday after 5pm doesn’t count.
