Matt Ryan = Shaun King > Josh Freeman?

Warren Sapp seems to believe quarterbacks should be judged by playoff victories

Kurt Warner recently busted out a take on the NFL’s 10 best quarterbacks on NFL Network, and Josh Freeman was nowhere to be found on the list. Neither were playoff quarterbacks Russell Wilson, Andy Dalton, Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin, III, or even bratty Jay Cutler and his 51-42 career record.

“It’s all about Super Bowls, and it’s all about consistency,” Warner said of the reasoning driving his picks.

As expected, Warner’s top-10 list drew boos from some of his colleagues, and Warren Sapp took particular offense to Warner selecting Matt Ryan as his seventh best QB, one spot behind Eli Manning and one ahead of Joe Flacco.

“Matt Ryan’s got as many wins as Shaun King in the playoffs. I can’t see him on anybody’s list,” Sapp screamed in disbelief of Warner.

This chatter reminded Joe of the horrendous ranking godfather NFL personnel man Gil Brandt gave Freeman in January, when he ranked Freeman as the 14th best NFL QB under 30 years old on NFL.com.

So where does Freeman rank among his fellow starters? Joe believes the answer is only relevant as it relates to how the Bucs’ decision-makers rank Freeman.

If after this season, Freeman’s fifth, Greg Schiano and Mark Dominik don’t think they have a QB among the top half of starters in the NFL, perhaps they opt to move on to a guy with more potential upside?

There is no controversy now, though, as Joe’s written previously. Freeman has every tool/weapon he needs and will paint a clear picture of what kind of QB he his during the 2013 season.

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

Joe, you can continue to bolster Shaun King’s buc career and I understand because you need to maintain a good journalistic relationship…so that’s OK…..but I don’t have to.

  2. Amar Says:

Man, for how much of a nervous wreck you would think Josh would be in his situation; I think he’s ready to go and will bounce back hard! Get’em Josh, we’re behind you. Prove Raheem did right by drafting you!

  3. Bobby Says:

If Sapps criteria is correct then Marino flat out sucked. 3 playoff wins. It takes more than a good QB. Football is a team effort. The QB usually gets all the glory in a win and all the blame in a loss but no one man can carry a team to victory. If the line doesn’t block, the RB goes nowhere. If the receivers can’t get open I don’t care how good your QB is. If your defense sucks and allows more points than the offense scores……you get the picture.

  4. Josh P Says:

King’s TB Defense > Ryans ATL Defense.. don’t just look at W/L

  5. SirustheVirus Says:

“Matt Ryan = Shaun King” Things like this should get you fired. Stating that is an act of terrorism.

  6. Josh P Says:

If we had Ryan in those two NFL Championship games we probably are playing in 1 if not 2 more super bowls.. Ryan is much better than King.. The Rams Def was average in ’99 and we couldn’t score 12 points?

  7. Kennedy Says:

When Sapp mentioned Shaun King most viewers said, “Who??”

  8. Buc'It Says:

2 things I liked about this post:

Warren’s response because it took shots and a rival division QB and a complete grouch former QB

This might be the first post Joe didn’t give his normal King intro about “one of the two Buc QBs to lead the team to the NFC championship game”

  9. RCH Says:

    @Bobby

Marino did flat out suck the last time I checked he had zero rings.

  10. The 300's Says:

Apparently Trent Dilfer (one of two quarterbacks to leave the Bucs and win a Super Bowl the next year with another team) and Brad Johnson (the ONLY quarterback to win the Bucs a Super Bowl) are Hall of Fame worthy…… in Sapp’s eyes.

Wonder what Shaun King (one of three blah, blah, blah) thinks? I am sure Joe will fill us in as he and Shaun are apparently journalist bros.

Seriously dude. Love your writing, but this mancrush is going way too far. Kinda like you listening to that certain sports radio program you have mentioned on here a few times.

  11. tampabaybucfan Says:

The Bucs had three QBs that eventuall went on to win Super Bowls for other teams…..Steve Young, Doug Williams & Trent Difer.
Why not with the Bucs?…..probably the defense wasn’t good enough. Or the QBs were in different stages of development.
When we did win ours….Brad Johnson was hardly an elite QB. He dinked & duncked his way down the field with a pretty spectacular surrounding cast and a great defense.
Josh can do the same. He doesn’t have to carry the team on his back…..just don’t blow it when we have a chance.

  12. Pete 422 Says:

Josh isn’t a nervous wreck, because he has confidence in his ability. It takes a team to win, especially Super Bowls (just ask Jim Kelly).

  13. robert Says:

josh can’t dink or dunk anything. he’s worst on the mid range throws!

sheesh, some people on hear have never played madden.

josh is good for long bombs, handing the ball off and Michael Jackson photo shots.

  14. Jonny 2.3 Says:

“Josh Freeman was nowhere to be found”

Why mention that obvious little nugget?

  15. Warrenfb12 Says:

    LOL! King sucks.

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

None of this really matters. What matters is what happens on the field this year. I believe Josh will shine like never before.

  17. Bobby Says:

@RCH….thanks for proving my point about ignorance.

  18. abdominal snowman Says:

I think Josh has what it takes to win a championship. If he walks after this year and ends up on a team with an established defense like the texans, bears, cardinals, or steelers; I would make the bet he will win a Super Bowl before we do. Then he can be the 4th Buc QB to leave and win a championship.

  19. Lev Says:

As fans of football we must understand that even after what the Bucs did this off season, football is a game of many variables and things will not always go as planned. Having said that I am excited fro next season and believe in Josh Freeman

  20. RIs_Buc Says:

love for Sapp >= hate for King

  21. Buddah Says:

Matt Ryan is the most overrated quarterback in the NFL. He’s been surrounded by great players at the skill positions. When you’re 0-4 in the playoffs including two home games, you aren’t great.

  22. Bobby Says:

Doesn’t the playoff game they won last year count??

  23. Joe Says:

    Brad:

If you are finished with your infantile rant, feel free to spend a few moments explaining where Joe is wrong.

Or, do you know the difference between right or wrong? Joe’s not sure.

  24. Couch Fan Says:

    @Joe

I’m thinking unless you write articles declaring Freeman a future hall of famer, and only writing articles that praise our stud franchise QB who has not done anything in the NFL yet, then maybe all the jock riders and leg humpers will be happy since they clearly dont want to live in the real world where the rest of us can at least admit Freeman has some issues.

  25. Fritz50 Says:

“you write articles declaring Freeman a future hall of famer, and only writing articles that praise our stud franchise QB who has not done anything in the NFL yet,”

Both of those views are flat out wrong. Free is neither a ‘Hall of Fame’er, nor has he done ‘nothing’. Why , in hell does it have to be one or the other. He can’t just be a pretty good QB, with some flaws? He has to be the sole reason the Bucs win or lose? The whole discussion is infantile.

  26. Bobby Says:

^^^^^True^^^^^^ but what else are you going to write about until July?

  27. scubog Says:

Almost got to the end of the well written comments before reading one that should have been scribbled on the junior high boys room wall. Joe, all you need to do is write a headline “Freeman” with no article and sit back and laugh as the Battle of Wits between the posters ensues.
