Initial Reaction: Dominik Thieved Bears (Again)

New Bucs offensive lineman Gabe Carimi talks with his college position coach, Bob Bostad, when both were at Wisconsin. The two reunite as the Bucs acquired Carimi today and Bostad is the Bucs’ offensive line coach.
What is it with Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik and the Bears? Twice already Dominik has stolen draft picks from the Bears and now, it appears Dominik may have stolen a starting tackle.
Yes, the Bucs traded a measly sixth-round pick in 2014 to Chicago today for former Bears first round pick, tackle Gabe Carimi. Now to be fair, Carimi has been downright awful thus far in the NFL. There’s a reason the Bears have simply given him away.
But after Dominik swindled a second-round pick from the Bears for Gaines Adams, and got a seventh-round pick out of Brian Price (who the Bears gave up on shortly thereafter), one would think headstrong Phil Emery would stay clear of Dominik.
Well, maybe that is why Emery is headstrong?
The leaguewide look at Carimi must be pretty awful because Emery couldn’t have been that dumb not to shop Carimi around, hoping to get something more than a sixth-round pick, especially as valuable as offensive linemen are.
But Joe thinks there is a good chance this could turn out to be the steal of the year. Why?
It just so happens that the guy who developed Carimi into a first round pick at Wisconsin is on the Bucs’ staff, offensive line coach Bob Bostad, largely regarded as one of the top offensive line coaches walking the face of the earth.
If anyone can turn around Carimi it would be Bostad. Who knows Carimi better than Bostad? Outside of possibly Carimi’s mother, no one.
Now if somehow Bostad can right Carimi, the former Outland Trophy winner (for best interior college lineman) should certainly push Demar Dotson at right tackle, and may become Donald Penn’s successor down the road.
No, Joe’s not saying Carimi should replace Penn, but Penn isn’t exactly a spring chicken. How many more years does Penn have left in the tank?
It seems like the Bears were trying to get rid of Carimi since he got worked over by 49ers defensive end Aldon Smith for 5.5 sacks in a Monday Night Football game in 2011.
Yes, Joe is on a sugar high because he just downed some frogurt. But if Bostad can turn around Carimi, then Bostad truly does possess a magic wand.

I’m not upset about getting a backup for a 6th round pick but lets not pretend this is some sort of steal. The guy flat out sucks. If he cant start for the Bears then that shows you how bad he is.

Or maybe the Bears coaching sucked? Or maybe Carimi’s skill set didnt match what they do in Chicago? He didnt suck simply because “He couldnt start for the bears”. In fact I thought he was there starting RT.

Carimi didn’t like playing for the Bears and the Bears didn’t like the production they were getting from Carimi. This fell right into Dominik’s wheelhouse. Dominik and Bostad knows Carimi can play better and Chicago got rid of a potential problem child. May look one-sided, but this is a good deal for everybody!

@This is not meant to replace anyone, unless he starts of awesome and makes a huge impression during the off season. But this is just to develop the kid back to first round talent.
Which helps us out in the long run, the kids still VERY young he can still be useful, unless he’s broken beyond repair

Off subject,I truly haven’t been this crazy for an upcoming season than this year.I love the way Dom and staff are doin things, I really see a DYNASTY being build!

Maybe with a change of scenery and being reunited with his old college coach he can revitalize his career and reach that 1st round selection potential, providing he’s healthy. Another interesting guy to watch in camp.

This is a low risk trade for a guy that showed a ton of potential in college. Time will tell.

a) @Joe – Go back and look at the pre-draft comments on him. He’s not a candidate to ever be a starting LT, but he may be a quality RT if he can get his knee right.
b) @John – WTF do you know? He gave up a 6th rounder for a 24 year old former 1st rounder whose first 2 seasons have been affected by a knee injury. Seems to me it’s a small risk with some great upside, if he can get his knee right. If you can get a quality backup G/T for a 6th rounder, especially a young one, I’d say that’s pretty good. If the guy hit waivers, there’s no guarantee they’d get him.

Being with his old college coach, and the winning atmosphere that surrounds One Buc Palace these days, it may do wonders to resurrect this young mans career. He could potentially be that hidden gem that is well worth a future 6th round pick or he could be washed up. Either way for what it’s worth, considering how we have a relationship with Chicago we did them a favor in good faith.

A first round pick only two seasons ago for a mere sixth rounder. Hard to find fault with that unless the guy turns out to be Charles McRae. He’s a run blocking RT with a sore knee that may just need a little time to heal completely. As Dominik says, “we know knees”.

How can any of you criticize this move?? I dont understand. Just yesterday our backup RT was Jamon Meredith. Now it isnt. And the price? a 6th rounder that Dom was only going to use to trade up earlier in the fifth or something.
This already is a steal. Bad knee or no. Our line is better today than yesterday, and they got him for a song and a cold beer. Now, we have quality across the line, and additional depth. Larsen (OG only plz), Zuttah, Carimi, Meredith (OG). And even Dotson as a LT. Look, Aaron Rodgers would have killed for our backup line last year. And now its just better.
Someone above asked what Shaun King will think of the move. We already know the answer. Like a moron, he will probably say some nonsense like, “He gave up a 6 for this guy? How stupid, further proof Dom is a bad GM. He could have had him for free when he got released.” We all know the errors plaguing that statement, and furthermore we know Shaun won’t care about them.
In my humble opinion, this is further prrof why Dom is going to be an Exec of the year candidate. (Love to get Shaun’s take on that if he won.)
