Bucs “Leaning” Toward Three Quarterbacks
June 10th, 2013There’s been all kinds of wacky national and local blubbering about the possibility of rookie Mike Glennon becoming the Bucs’ starting quarterback in 2013.
Yes, the Bucs want Glennon to be a star, like they do every player on their roster. And they want their coveted competition for Josh Freeman. But there’s also the flip side to Glennon being on the roster. He’s a rookie and he may be nowhere close to ready to win an NFL football game.
Joe asked rockstar general manager Mark Dominik today about the likelihood of the Bucs keeping Dan Orlovsky as a third quarterback given that Glennon is a green rookie. Dominik was clear that the Bucs are absolutely “leaning” toward keeping three QBs and he praised Orlovsky’s experience.
This was somewhat interesting to Joe, as a third quarterback is something the Bucs haven’t had on the roster in years. And if they keep a third QB, that would impact other guys on the roster bubble, presumably on offense, such as captain of the inactive list, Michael Smith, and the bottom rung of receiving corps.
Joe thinks there’s at least a decent shot the Bucs can gamble (assuming everyone’s healthy) by cutting Orlovsky after training camp and re-signing him off the street if necessary. Joe’s not confident Orlovsky will find a new employer so fast.

And the Pats leaning towards Tebow…thats just crazy.
June 10th, 2013 at 6:13 pm
Neither of these guys are even adequate backups, we should’ve just signed a veteran and not wasted that draft pick.
June 10th, 2013 at 6:19 pm
Im giving Glennon a chance. Wanted a TE more, but we did need some QB competition. We’ll see.

“And the Pats leaning towards Tebow…thats just crazy.”
Yeah, Mad Max, the Patriots have no idea what they are doing. I mean, just look at their last ten years compared to the Bucs.

I don’t think it is that important for us to carry 3 QBs in the regular season. Unless Dominik is worried about someone signing Orlovsky, he always has Rudy Carpenter on speed dial. Rudy should be familiar with Sullivan’s playbook as he got plenty of reps last pre-season.

You’re absolutely right. If there is one team that can handle the Tebow circus, it’s the Patriots.
June 10th, 2013 at 6:55 pm
I agree that three quarterbacks would be a waste of a roster spot. I don’t think Orlovsky is THAT much better than the aforementioned Rudy Carpenter or even Adam Weber.

Got more faith in Orlovsky than Glennon. Glennon needs a year on practice squad- has some major technique/timing issues. Orlovsky can win a few.
Tebow to Pats is a perfect fit. Media circus is the norm there. And that time knows a winner when it sees one. They will find a way to let Tebow play to his strengths, and one of those happens to be winning games.
Meybe the perfect Fit.

^^^A third round QB on the practice squad would get snatched up instantly. Not a possibility. (Even though I agree that he needs to sit and learn for a year.)

You’re right, Glennon would get snatched before he even cleared the 24 hour waiver before he signed to the practice squad. Put Orlovsky on the practice squad.
June 10th, 2013 at 7:37 pm
^^^Orlovsky isn’t eligible for the practice squad.
June 10th, 2013 at 7:38 pm
Orlovsky doesn’t qualify for the practice squad. The Bucs will keep 3 QBs and have one (probably Glennon) inactive each week. Looks like Glennon might get the captain of the inactive list duties this year. It’s either that, or they keep Glennon active, only keep two QBs, and call up Dan or Rudy or one of the others if Josh goes down. Sounds like they like Glennon’s promise as a backup for the future, but aren’t sold on him this year.

Damn, you guys are right. Dayoff today, been sucking down some brews. I’m just not on my game today.
June 10th, 2013 at 8:34 pm
Is Tom Matte available??
June 10th, 2013 at 8:52 pm
Practice Squad rules should be changed to help young talented QB to able to be developed. If a team takes your QB off a team’s PS they should have to start and play a percentage of plays or something along those lines. Just a thought.

@lightning the Pats are usually pretty good with their moves…know what they’re doing. Nobody else was giving Tim a chance, for a reason maybe you dont see. But, they pounced on him. Im sure he’ll be starting over Brady soon, lol.
Look, I like Tim, but he wont cut it as a QB in the NFL. Maybe they’ll use him as a RB or FB, or TE…who knows…an interesting move for sure.
June 10th, 2013 at 10:50 pm
McNulty’s been around a few good QB’s. Hopefully, he can reach Josh and help lead him into the next level.
June 11th, 2013 at 12:55 am
@MadMax
Nobody else gave him a chance because of the circus media that follows him. People can say whatever they want about the guy but one thing he’s done so far is win football games. He may of not looked pretty but the end result are W’s. He disserves at least a shot to prove that ‘he wont cut it”.
June 11th, 2013 at 7:27 am
Nobody else said it so I guess I’m wrong, but I thought the new NFL rule said teams can have a 53 man roster if the 53rd man was a QB otherwise it’s 52. Guess not.
Also, the Patriots use the TE position very well. Tebow, wouldn’t be the first QB to transition into another skilled position. That seems to be his best path to remain in the NFL.
June 11th, 2013 at 9:39 am
So the jets didnt give him a chance? Denver didnt? Even after he got them to a playoff (which had more to do with their D imo). He’s been given chances. Now do you really think Bill will be starting him over Brady or even Mallet? lol.
Like I said, he’ll be running or catching for them. Probably running.
June 11th, 2013 at 11:09 am
Lmao did you even pay attention to the Jets when Tebow was there? NO the Jet’s never gave him a chance nor did they ever have any intentions of giving him a chance. Name one time he actually started a game for the Jets? Exactly you cant. You know why? Cuz they NEVER gave him a chance!
Yes Denver gave him a chance and guess what? He took them to the playoffs, in fact he even won a playoff game. Imagine that? Something Freeman is still trying to do. It might of been the defense, it might of been an act of god but the fact remains he made the most of his chance and disserves at least another chance to prove that it was a fluke if thats what it was.
Did I say he would start in New England? No. That is just you running your mouth trying to put the man down cuz you personally dont like him. The fact you think he’s been giving chances is out right as ridiculous as your opinion.
June 11th, 2013 at 11:34 am
Where did I say I personally dont like him? Dont put words in my mouth…now you’re the one talking smack!!
He was given chances in practice and obviously they didnt like what they were seeing. Thats what I meant by he’s been given chances. Sorry you’re too stupid to figure that out….carry on.
June 11th, 2013 at 11:38 am
You dont have to say it, stupidity runs through your every word. Especially when you seem to think the Jets had ever given him a chance. LMAO absolutely laughable just like your post…. Yes carry on with your stupidity.
June 11th, 2013 at 11:47 am
haha, nice copycat there bud. Look, Im done arguing with you since you’re making stuff up and blind to what 99% of others see with Tebow. Now carry on and I mean PROUDLY carry his jock strap for him….he appreciates it.
June 12th, 2013 at 1:42 am
I was trying to stay away from it couch, but before you ever call someone stupid again, please learn to properly spell “deserve”…..its not “disserve”…you’re welcome.
