No, Joe does not know why Bucs fans have such a burning hatred for Shaun King, one of but three quarterbacks in Bucs history to lead the squad to an NFC Championship game.
He’s a local guy who grew up loving the Bucs — and still does. He wears his emotions on his sleeve. Yes, he’s been critical of Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, but it’s not like King is a lone wolf howling in the woods.
And this just in: NFL analysts that work for one of the top media organizations in the world, NBC Universal, are supposed to have strong takes. Name Joe an NFL analyst that just shrugs his shoulders and offers little to no insight and Joe will show you a man who will be calling your house shortly trying to sell aluminum siding.
That doesn’t mean King has blinders on. Just this week while appearing on “Ron and Ian” on WDAE-AM 620, King lauded Dominik for picking up embattled offensive lineman Gabe Carimi.
“Actually thought this was a good pick-up by Mark Dominik,” King said. “Simply because Carimi coming out of college was highly regarded. For whatever reasons, it didn’t work in Chicago. He got injured and the organization didn’t have a lot of faith in him and he didn’t play really well.
“But [Bucs assistant] coach [Bob] Bostad was his coach in college. So you take a chance on a guy that had that kind of talent when you can reunite him with his college coach. It will be interesting. I don’t know where Gabe Carimi is mentally. When you put the film on from last year he was terrible. But maybe reuniting him with his [old] coach will jump-start him to help reach his potential.”
This is what Joe has written. Likely no person short of Carimi’s mother knows him as well as Bostad. And to get him for a measly sixth-round pick could work out to be a steal.

King didn’t lead the Bucs to an NFC championship. He followed them. Big difference.

Joe, seems we here on this corner of the interwebs are getting through to King. This is the second (or third) story where Shaun has been less critical of Dominik. His previous (seemingly) boundless distaste for Dom was irritating us all so much, the King-hate must have worn on him.
Good for him for turning it around. And it’s not about strong opinions, Joe, it’s about sensical ones. His previous points were nonsense. (Ref: reasons getting Revis was dumb) Even the casual, bucs fan knows that Dom is putting forth a great effort since being unshackled. And has filled this roster with great players. And yet, for the longest time, King didn’t like it. Leaving us to wonder, what WOULD he like?
I’m glad the idiocy is wearing off. Come back to the Light, Shaun.

I don’t like King because he acts like he had this great career that allows him to look down on the current NFL.
King may have been the QB but he did not lead the team at any point and time to the NFC Championship. He rode the Defense just like every other QB in Bucs history. His own teammate has called him out and hinted at others feeling that he has a personal score with Mark D and the Bucs .
Analyst do usually tell it how it is. With King he only speaks up when its negative.

I have nothing against him personally, but when it comes to moves I approve of, that most others approve of (including Joe and BSPN), I reserve the right to claim anyone who disagrees with the move, as stupid.
King has repeatedly striven to find an exposed nerve and tweak. He has become very accomplished at it. And I disagree that he’s “telling it like it is” (banned phrase?) because for gosh sakes….he’s just plain wrong most of the time. No one can be a real ‘analyst’ and be wrong that much without having a purpose.
I think he’s going for a Skip Bayless type role. He just needs to work on the being right occasionally part.

This is what you call “damage control”.
King realized that his hatred for Dominik was becoming blatantly obvious. So what does he do? He applauds him on something to “prove” he is unbiased. A move he probably made a few months too late. The cat is already out of the bag.
I’m sorry Joe but the reason fans here don’t like him is because he is incredibly biased. Being a former Buc AND a Buc fan growing up only makes it worse.
Another reason is you personally Joe. You drive a lot of the hatred for many reasons. One being the red carpet rolled out for King anytime his holiness is mentioned, ” . . . one of but three quarterbacks in Bucs history to lead the squad to an NFC Championship game”. That alone inspires hatred just because of how disrespectful that statement is to that defense. That’s like saying Brad Johnson led the Bucs to their only Super Bowl. If you only said he “helped lead” it would inspire much less hatred for King while conveying roughly the same point.
^This causes a lot of people to have a negative connotation with King before he even speaks.

at the end of the day thats the most important thing that we as bucs fans can hope for, is that they put in the EFFORT. I can live that if the wins dont come. the only person who cant live live with that though is Dom, because he would be fired. but if he gives it his all and we dont win, then it wasnt meant to be.

It’s good business for Joe to develop a linkage with NBC Sports. King too.
Not being critical here because the relationship makes sense for both. And we get Bucs coverage for free.
King does love his Bucs and has played NFL football, but his sparse resume should not be embellished to the degree it has been here.
Controversy as a means of generating interest is nothing new. The media has forever been the politicians and activists tool because it helps them sell advertising.
King is just trying to find the delicate balance between blowhard and guru.

The problem with King’s takes is this is about 1 time praising Mark D out about 12 times bashing him. If you go by what King says, the Bucs roster has about 40 guys that should be out of football.
Be critical, have strong takes, but be fair also. He isn’t. He is just massively negative the majority of the time.

I really wish you would stop making that ridiculous statement every article now about how you can’t understand why Bucs fans dislike King. You aren’t an idiot, as only an idiot would be dumb enough to not understand why. I’m sure you do it to stir the pot, but just saying the name Shaun King stirs it enough.
And I could give 2 sh!ts less if he led us to a NFC Championship game. I don’t care if he won 5 Super Bowls for us. If he’s going to be nothing but negative all the time (he is completely and obviously biased), then I’m not going to like him, period. I really don’t get why that’s hard for anyone to comprehend. Tiki Barber had some tremendous, MVP-type season in NY – how do the NY fans feel about him? I think it’s safe to say he was better than the great Shaun King, don’t you think?

I can explain why fans hate King. It’s because he is the type of fan that views the team as glass half empty all the time. Examples of such fans appear right here on the site and garner the same kind of hatred. Being a “realistic” fan doesn’t means always viewing what is wrong and ignoring what is right about the team.
And that is what king does 98% of the time. He’s had what? 5 positive things to say about the Bucs in the last year?
I’m not against pointing out valid concerns, but to assume the worse is bad policy.

i normally agree and respect Joe but I think he does have a man crush on King. King was a great story for about 15 minutes. I will even take a step further than those above not only did King NOT lead the bucs, the D had to overcompensate for the lack of offense. King spends more time personally attacking teams then giving specific insight not just the bucs. By the way, Joe nobody watches NBC just look at the ratings. NBC Universal is a joke.
any stat geeks no the numbers for that season. I would almost bet a paycheck that the bucs D / special teams scored more than a third of touchdowns that year.

I consider the glass 2/3 empty, since that is about the amount of games the Bucs have lost since Dom took over assembling the roster.

Why does anyone even listen to Sean King, what a waste of breath. He is constantly negative and bitter, pure signs of jealousy. Deep down you can sense his desire for the Bucs to fail, just so he can say I told you so. Like others have said here before, King didn’t lead us to an NFC Title game, our defense did. Stop giving this hack more credit than he deserves, he played in a far different football era than we are in now. The QB position wasn’t as important back then as it is today, as odd as that may sound. Sean King is hack, plain and simple.

Joe tries to validate King’s opinion by saying he “led” the Bucs to a NFC title game. Man using Joe’s flawed logic he will think Mark Sanchez is Joe Montana for leading the Jet’s to 2 AFC title games.
King didn’t lead anything that year. He was given a piggy back ride by a dominant defense. Joe may need to rewatch the 1999 game film.

It’s pretty damn obvious why people have issue with King, he does nothing but slag off Freeman, Schiano, Dominik, then the next day he’s singing praises and constantly say “Don’t think I don’t like him – I like him”.
