Xavier Rhodes Targeted “On The Beat”

April 10th, 2013

One would think beat writers around the NFL know their teams quite well, at least more than a draft guru sitting in a room with a laptop, a coffee pot and trays of cheese danish.

Therefore, Joe was eager to see how the NFL beat writers first-round draft would go on NFL Network. Essentially, the NFL AM crew took a break from dance talk to interview a writer from each NFL city — in draft order — to get their pick.

The Bucs finally came up and Stephen Holder of TampaBay.com claimed the third cornerback off the board with the Bucs’ 13th overall pick, Xavier Rhodes. You can see the video here.

Writers selected cornerback Dee Milliner for the Lions with the fifth overall pick and Miami was granted CB Desmond Trufant with the 12th selection. Interestingly, the Jets’ beat writer didn’t have his team snatching a corner with the No. 9 pick.

This all intrigued Joe, mainly because veteran NFL scout and former NFL personnel man Chris Landry just said there are only two cornerbacks worthy of first-round grades, and one of them is not named Rhodes.

Would the Bucs “reach” for a cornerback at No. 13? Or would they be content to wait until the second round and/or trade down?

Rhodes is worth 13, a bit of a reach but not too much. Trufant is just not worth a high pick. Just my opinion.

  2. Sunny Says:

I would have taken a DT and traded the second up for Rhodes

  3. stevek Says:

Not liking this pick at all.

3rd CB off the board at the 13th selection.

Xavier Rhodes would look great in Pewter, but not at the cost of the 13th pick.

The 13th pick should be reserved for an “elite” talent at the position of the selection: Lane Johnson OT, Ziggy Ansah DE, Star DT, Tavon Austin WR/KR…. Bottom line is, we need an elite differenct maker with the 13th selection. We are not afforded enough talent on this roster to reach for a CB.

  4. stevek Says:

Rhodes is not much different than a 2nd round CB, in fact the I would much prefer looking at the CB position in the 2nd or 3rd round.

  5. AmbushBuc Says:

Rhodes will go in the first round and be a star in the NFL. A draft pick’s stock value is where any two teams would take him. The notion that someone taken at #13 is being taken “too high” when some other team would take him at #20 is ridiculous.

You don’t pass on a star just because it’s a few picks “too early” to take him.

  6. T in Orlando Says:

Xavier Rhodes = Jonathan Banks + 15lbs, they’re virtually the same player, and Banks can likely be had by staying put in the second (maybe trading up a few picks, sacrificing a 5th or 6th to do so).

  7. Buc Neckid Says:

Bucs will not take Rhodes wiht 13th pick
but will take him in the First later
after a trade up into the first round
like they did last year to pick up D. Martin

  8. Gus Says:

I really hope this isn’t true. Really want the bucs to get trufant but Rhodes is pretty damn good too

  9. Gus Says:

Also the bucs could trade back. If a guy like Tavon Austin is still on the board, someone is going to want to snatch him from st.louis. Trade back and get a guy like Eifert and Rhodes

  10. stevek Says:

We can get a better and more talented prospect with the 13th pick.

We can trade back up for Rhodes, if it is really worth it.

There is no need to snatch the 3rd CB off the board with the 13th pick. Especially not with the likes of an elite O-Line or D-Line, or other prospect.

We need to pick the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE.

If we really want to draft Rhodes with the 13th pick, we might as well trade it to the NYJ for Revis. Atleast Revis would be the #1 CB in this draft.

  11. jb Says:

How in heck do you take Rhodes over Lotulelei?
Drafting for simple need with your first round pick is a great way for a GM to eventually be shown the the door. Hopefully Dom’s not as stupid as Holder is.

  12. jb Says:

” Sunny Says…..I would have taken a DT and traded the second up for Rhodes”

I wholeheartedly agree! You don’t pass on Star simply because you NEED a cornerback!

  13. stevek Says:

Just saw this snipit on rotoworld:

“Josh Freeman – QB – Buccaneers According to the Tampa Bay Times, just about everyone within the Bucs is on board with Josh Freeman except coach Greg Schiano.

Schiano joined the Bucs last season, three years after the organization used a No. 17 overall pick on Freeman. Schiano has consistently waffled on the quarterback position in the media, saying he wants to bring in competition. However, the only “competition” the Bucs have actually signed is incumbent backup Dan Orlovsky. Even if they use a middle-round draft pick on a quarterback, Schiano appears content to let this be a make-or-break season for Freeman.”

We could draft a QB at #13?

  14. Sunny Says:

I think we have more of a need for star than tavon . . . How much does free need I would take star complete a beastly Line barring injury and trade up to get Rhodes just hope Rhodes is still there I have a feeling Philly might take him if he is there and than half of Tampa bay is going to jump off the skyway and the other half are going to be outside OBP with lighted torches and pitchforks

  15. 4everBucsFan Says:

If you want one of the best corners in the draft, then you can’t sit on your hands waiting on one. In this mock they’ve got 2 going in the top 12 picks. With so many teams needing CBs, us waiting till the second round could have us selecting from the scrap heap. Taking a corner who is no better than what we already have. We want NFL ready, not a prospect.

  16. Oldguy Says:

I agree with those that say a DT is our first round pick. There are three high-quality, all-round types with good pass rushing skills. We need a pass rush! Wait til round 2 for a CB. BTW, I like Elam out of Florida. He is the second rated safety in the draft. But the guy is such an athlete, could he not play corner?

  17. Gotbbucs Says:

I guarantee without a doubt in my mind that the draft will not unfold how a bunch of beat writers think it will. Taking the 3rd corner off the board by the 13th pick is just awful value. Holder obviously must have slept through every offseason with dominik at the helm. He is all about percieved value.

  18. Buc Neckid Says:

    Bucs a #13
    DT S.Richardson

  19. 4everBucsFan Says:

Has anyone seen this poll on NFL.COM?
    _____________________________________________________
Should the Jets trade Darrelle Revis to the Bucs for the No.13 pick?

    Yes

No, the Jets need more in return

    ______________________________________________

This is a very biased question. There should be just a “NO”.
    anyone agree?

  20. Sunny Says:

Also they have links takin Milner which might be sure thing like every one thinks they lost avril and love drafting DL maybe they do that instead maybe a Werner in that case we would get the 2 cb also dolphins signed Brent grimes so not sure they will pick a cb just saying not that I think Milner will fall to us but you never know

  21. Macabee Says:

    SteveK,

I saw that piece in Rotoworld and it was taken from an article done by Stephen Holder on Bucs Beat. My takeaway is that Schiano has a boss who happen to like Freeman and Schiano has been told to lay off the competition kick – witnessed by Schiano’s change of tune in his end of year desire to bring in competition.

Bottom line, whether they get another QB in the draft, there will be no real competition this year. There may be competiion with Orlovsky for back-up.

Read the Holder piece and tell me what you think!

  22. Tomcin Says:

I think we should trade up maybe with Oakland & get Milner.

  23. BirdDoggers Says:

I don’t think the value is there at #13 for Rhodes. The better option would be a defensive lineman. especially if two corners are off the board before the Bucs pick. A trade down might be the better option if Dominik can pull it off. CB is certainly a need, but that’s why most mocks have the Bucs taking a corner, regardless of who’s left on the board in the first round. A comparable corner should be available in the second round. Slay, Banks come to mind.

  24. Sunny Says:

Mathieu is worth a gamble he was suppose to be a first round prospect and was a heisman runner up fifth place maybe 3 rd pick could have big upside and he is a returner as well

  25. Mr. Patrick Says:

I just really hope that Bucs still have their 13th pick and haven’t foolishly traded it away for Bevis. I hope they come out of the 1st round with either Millner or Star

  26. PRBucFan Says:

Just saw a consensus Mock up from the NFL experts and interestingly enough they have s split between Tavon Austin and Rhodes lol

  27. bucsguy Says:

Rhodes is not a “Buccaner Man” the book on this guy is under achiever, all the talent none of the production. Doesnt attempt to ge involved when play is not coming to him, not a great tackler, not a college capt. or even a team leader. I think if Star is their they go with him if he isnt then they trade back to 16 with the rams so they can jump carolina and take Tavon Austin. Then maybe Trufant at 16.
