Schiano Trained; Revis Approved?
April 24th, 2013Look, Joe would wager a reasonable amount of cash on the Bucs drafting a cornerback on Friday. They really almost have to.
The Bucs’ cornerback depth is suspect, plus Eric Wright and Darrelle Revis are coming off injuries and Wright, if successful in 2013, will command a massive payday the Bucs would unlikely cough up in 2014.
So what corner might the Bucs draft?
Well, Joe found it interesting that former Rutgers stud cornerback Logan Ryan, projected to be a second- or third-round pick just so happened to train this offseason in Arizona with Revis, so he told NJ.com
“I feel like I’m training with one of the best defensive back coaches in the country in Will Sullivan and this is where Darrelle Revis is rehabbing. I’m learning a lot from him, just being around him every day and picking his brain. So I have that and the guy who trains Darrelle Revis, among many other great defensive backs, working with me.”
Ryan’s known for being extremely physical and a sure tackler, and he seems like the prototype Buccaneer Man, given his Schiano-Rutgers connection and his success in the classroom. Ryan’s primary measurables (5-11, 191, 4.56 40-yard dash), won’t wow anyone to much, but he was healthy and very productive in college. Will Revis endorse him?
Joe also heard an interview recently with weed-friendly, former LSU star cornerback Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu on 98.7 FM. Mathieu, still just 20 years old, also talked about how Revis was in touch with him regularly to offer support and counseling.
It’s telling — in a good way — how Revis is eager to reach out and lead outside his own locker room.

@joe
It’s clear that the bucs FO is very fond of their in house connections. No doubt they were in constant touch with Revis through Dave wanstedt who has kept in close touch with revis throughout his career since Pitt. Mathieu and Revis have strong ties and id love to know darelles opinion on him. That being said, do you know any other connections or players who visited our facility that we aren’t smoke screening? I just don’t see us taking someone that we never talked to…
April 24th, 2013 at 11:38 am
You just know this Rutgers guy is heading our way. Schiano wants a trustworthy guy who can tackle and knows the scheme. He’ll get that in Ryan
April 24th, 2013 at 12:01 pm
Logan Ryan or Khaseem Greene. I’ll take both or either one.
April 24th, 2013 at 12:07 pm
This guy sounds like LJ who is already on the roster
April 24th, 2013 at 12:09 pm
I am all for this pick. A hard hitting, playmaker sounds like a GREAT idea, and our CB works with him? please, please, please, make this happen
April 24th, 2013 at 12:17 pm
I would take Honey Badger, who seems to be a changed dude and just tested clean… again.
The Rutgers kid I do not know as well.
Eitherw way, the real story is Revis and his character at reaching out and his leadership. So much has been made of him being a cancer. NO NFL player ever thinks a player dealing with his contract is a cancer. The NYJ players have portrayed him as nothing but a leader and great locker room guy.
April 24th, 2013 at 12:17 pm
@djoshfreeman,
Who didn’t they talk to?
April 24th, 2013 at 12:22 pm
Djoshfreeman,
I believe there is another connection with this regime, they don’t care about BS and they will draft the BPA.
The Bucs will take BPA, as the board dictates, there is no need to reach on a lesser talent. That is how to remain mediocre.
New wind in the sails this year, Revis changes everything and we no longer reach on draft picks.
Didn’t we learn that last year, as we passed on Mo Claibourne and traded back for Barron?
No more reaching for less, when you can sit back for more.
April 24th, 2013 at 12:33 pm
I would love for us to get a Jonathan Banks or a (potential) deadly pass rusher earlier in the draft. Finding a vet NT is easy to put next to GMC. CB, DE, SLB, ST(returner) is priority.

“I just don’t see us taking someone that we never talked to…”
The Bucs do that every year.
April 24th, 2013 at 12:36 pm
Correction:
The Bucs will take the BPA at the most productive position of NEED 🙂
April 24th, 2013 at 12:36 pm
@stevek
Are you calling Barron a bust? Or even a reach? Mark Barron had at least as much of an impact as Morris Claiborne possibly even more. People say Mark Barron is this tremendous liability in pass coverage. Really? So he didn’t make the game saving pass defense on Tony Gonzalez to win the last game? He could definitely be better, don’t get me wrong, but his pass coverage skills are average, not a “liability”. He is only going to get better. (Especially lining up next to Goldson.)
I also disagree with your sentiment that we haven’t always drafted BPA. I think Brian Price was largely considered BPA right after we drafted McCoy and it was not considered a necessity. (Obviously he didn’t pan out but at the time it was a well-respected choice and largely considered to be BPA.) Same thing with Da’quan Bowers. We had just drafted Adrian Clayborn but the talent was simply to great to pass up.
This isn’t some new trend.
April 24th, 2013 at 12:40 pm
There may be no choice but to “reach” this year. With so many players unworthy of a first round pick, that’s going to make a lot of 3rd round worthy guys go in the second round.
As far as BPA, what if the best player available is at, say, safety? It would make zero sense to draft a safety.
I’m more of a BPA at positions of need, with the biggest need first kind of guy.
For example, if DT is the biggest need, if we have to reach a little I’m fine in hte second round. BUT…if we can get a guy of the same quality in the 3rd round, I’m fine with that as well.
I have to say though, if the right CB is still on the board when we finally pick, I’d be hard pressed not to want him.
April 24th, 2013 at 12:47 pm
I smell the bucs targeting a QB pretty high in the draft.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:04 pm
QB Round 3 or maybe even Next year with round 1 pick
April 24th, 2013 at 1:15 pm
We should try to get him.. Im still very worried about Linebacker play, Defensive tackle and Right tackle.. Im not to worried about TE because we have enough Wide Outs now we should run the offense with 4 wide outs inmo..
April 24th, 2013 at 1:16 pm
stevek
Who is talking about reaching? They talking abouta 3rd round prospect.
As for Mo vs Barron…. I think Barron is going to be fantastic. He had absoutley no CB help in front of him last year. Mo was average last year. THey had the same amount of INTs (1) and Barron had over 30 more tackles.
Plus listen to Mo and he sounds like a me-first guy who will cause trouble in the future. Just my opinion.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:25 pm
West Coast and Dave,
My point was that WE WILL NOT DRAFT Mo Claibourne 5th overall, and we made THE RIGHT CALL by drafting Barron instead.
Mo Claibourne is a clown, and if it were Trent Richardson vs Claibourne in the draft, I would take Richardson 100/100 times.
We will draft BPA, and we are at a position of “needing talent”.
We can not afford to reach on a draft pick, take the best player available and it will work out.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:26 pm
the only people callin this guy a cancer was the jackass NY media, the NY fan base is sooooo screwed up that the cheer when they get the player they want and then boo him outta town if he misses a play. Honey Badger in the 4th, D-line in the 2nd, or maybe TE Zack Ertz if hes still there. idk wut the plan is im just glad we spent our 13th pick on Revis!!! for the Dom haters i wanna say thank you Dom for Jackson, Nicks, Martin, Barron, David, Goldson, and Revis!! thats 7 play makers in a year! BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
April 24th, 2013 at 1:32 pm
West Coast Buc Fan,
You refer to Brian Price, thank you for the ammo.
We drafted GMC #3 overall (2nd DT off of the board), and at #35 overall we double dipped on a DT. Dominick referred to this draft as the “deepest in history”.
Instead of drafting Price, we should have drafted TE Gronkowski.
Then, in the 3rd round of the same draft, we selected the: Myron Lewis. We passed in Jimmy Graham in that process.
There is no way in hell that we have always drafted BPA.
We passed on Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, and others to pick up Gaines Adams.
BPA all the way, and NO WEST COAST BUC Fan, we are not like your 49ers ;), we don’t alwayds draft BPA.
We do now, Schiano will not stand to lose in any facet of the game: lockerroom, team, record, contracts, and the Draft. We are in it to win it all.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:32 pm
“i wanna say thank you Dom for Jackson, Nicks, Martin, Barron, David, Goldson, Wright and Revis!! thats 8 play makers in a year!”
Very true… in just a little over 365 days, all of the above were signed.
Now factor in Steve Smith (NYG), T Underwood, (depth at WR), the Right Tackle, plus some others, the Buc’s roster has had a nice overhaul.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:33 pm
The Bucs will trade back into late 1st with say the Packers at 26 if Eifert falls. Watch and see my genius in action.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:34 pm
We also used the 39th selection, 4 picks after Price to take REEJUS BENN.
BPA is a must, no more reaching for lesser talent, not worth it.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:35 pm
OOPS I MEAN 7!!! LMFAO!!!!!!
April 24th, 2013 at 1:40 pm
i think Shiano has some say in it as well, Raheem wanted some of these busts everybody keeps pointing out. Shiano wants hard nose football players not project or long shots. Dom has to coordinate with the coach on who gets drafted so for all the haters blame team “Youngry” for some of these and not just Dom! BUCK IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
April 24th, 2013 at 1:45 pm
@stevek
Hindsight is 20/20.
I specifically said “AT THE TIME” Brian Price was considered a good pick. (Joe even posted an article preceding that draft about the possibility of Brian Price being the number three overall pick if Suh and McCoy both went 1 and 2.) I know that it didn’t work out but most mocks had Price as a first round talent. Criticizing the move after you already know how it turned out is ignorant. It was considered a success at the time. You can’t fault Dom for a guy getting, essentially, a career ending injury when he literally had ZERO injury history in college.
That was an Allen/Gruden pick. When I said “they” always pick BPA I was referring to Dom and the Bucs, not every GM that has ever been here.
Oh yeah and guess what? Gronk and Graham both went after the first round. If teams knew how good these guys would have actually turned out they would have been top ten picks.
My point was that AT THE TIME these players were considered BPA. (Probably not Myron though.) Also, we had a fairly young Kellen Winslow that we had traded for not too long ago so TE was NOT considered a “need” at the time.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:47 pm
With the 43rd pick in the 2013 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select.. Sylvester Williams DT North Carolina.
mark it down.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:49 pm
Also, what I meant when I said Kellen Winslow was not a “need” is that we needed players at other positions and TE was considered “set” at the time. We didn’t take a TE for the same reason we wouldn’t draft a safety or a running back high now.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:58 pm
I thought Brian Price was a good pick at the time too. Infact he was even playing better the McCoy early on until that devastating injury. its a shame… I really had I hopes for that guy. now we have to look to replace him because Miller was clearly not the answer, evidence of why we did not resign him.
April 24th, 2013 at 1:59 pm
You can grade drafts afterwards all you want but you can’t call a guy a “reach” in retrospect. A “reach” is determined at draft time, not after.
For instance, Tyson Alualu went 10th overall that year. It was widely considered to be a “reach” at the time. Afterwards it seemed like a fairly solid pick. (At least, during his rookie year.) Whether he turned out to be an all-star or a bust afterwards does not change the fact that AT THE TIME he was considered a reach and that the GM “reached” to acquire him.
April 24th, 2013 at 2:02 pm
@ stevek
I know you would take Richardson over Claiborne, me and you were both banging the drum for that last year.
@ everyone calling to draft Honey Badger
Talk about throwing a pick away. Even if the guy doesn’t lose interest in football again, I smell a smaller less talented Pacman Jones. The guy is tiny. The NFC South is full of big physicall receivers. What good is it to have a 5’9 CB. And don’t even bring up Ronde. He is not and will never be Ronde. Ronde is a Hall of Famer.
April 24th, 2013 at 2:10 pm
I remember hearing somewhere, I think it was Mel Kiper, that at least 12 first round picks were busts. thats a pretty sizable number. think about that, that is 12 players that teams thought were going to be good. the draft is anything but an exact science. just got to make an educated guess really.
April 24th, 2013 at 2:19 pm
Mel Kiper, Todd McShay, and all the other members of the ESPN Clown Car Cavalcade of Draft Experts are annoying me out of watching ESPN the past couple of weeks.
April 24th, 2013 at 2:20 pm
BPA. Period!
April 24th, 2013 at 2:24 pm
One of the Best DT was a 4th round pick. He was considered by experts to be undersize.
April 24th, 2013 at 2:26 pm
@J 2.0
I do not watch ESPN during the offseason due to 75% being bad information and the rest is speculation.
April 24th, 2013 at 2:30 pm
@Sneedy
Agree. Along the lines of “Remember when MTV played music?” Well, remember when ESPN showed highlights?
April 24th, 2013 at 3:04 pm
The Bucs WILL NOT draft Honey Badger. He is not enough like a Buccaneer Man. To draft him would make Schiano look like a hypocrite in front of the team. Remember too, the Bucs got rid of the pot smokers for a reason.
April 24th, 2013 at 3:35 pm
If Bucs trade back in to 1st round, better be for D. J. Fluker OT, Alabama
April 24th, 2013 at 6:19 pm
Logan Ryan has #1 cornerback potential…He’d be a great pick in the 3rd round.
April 24th, 2013 at 9:19 pm
I suspect the Bucs will take Ryan if he is available, he was on the radar since January for me. Honey Badger would be an interesting prospect if he makes the team.
