Ring Of Honor Drama Ends Thursday (It’s Sapp)

April 30th, 2013

Is it Hall of Fame inductee Warren Sapp or Father Dungy entering the Buccaneers Ring of Honor this season?

How about rightfully re-preserving the memory of Ricky Bell, as was done in the gone-but-not-forgotten Buccaneers Krewe of Honor?

Regardless, the Buccaneers will introduce the newest Ring of Honor member on Thursday.

Oh, the drama.

UPDATE: Apparently, there isn’t much drama. In one of the no-brainers of no-brainers, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times has learned Warren Sapp will enter the Ring of Honor.

I personally would love to see Ricky in the ring

  2. Rick Fischer Says:

Wow. It is crazy reading those names! Coach Williamson. That has been a long time!

    Go BUCS

  3. HOLA Says:

Never saw this guy play since i’m 23. He died before his time RIP, BUT looking at his numbers and as a first overall pick (tony dorsett HOF was taken #2) he was a complete bust. I believe it’s time to move on from the early bucs and move into the late 90 early 00 Bucs into the ring of honor (Brooks, Sapp, Lynch, Dungy, etc..)

  4. Mike J Says:

I liked Ricky. The Bucs have gotten endless grief over bypassing Tony Dorsett to take Bell, but Tony played behind perhaps the best O-line in the league; how he would have done behind an expansion team’s line, who knows?? & Ricky had to run a lot of college plays (the ol’ toss-sweep) against professional defenses. He handled his own blocking many times….

  5. Youpeoplearesodumb Says:

The right thing is to honor Saap after this summer’s HOF induction.

  6. Youpeoplearesodumb Says:

    And retire his jersey!!!!

  7. Scott Sciullo Says:

I can’t believe he isn’t in there yet…..disgraceful after all he did for McKay and the early Bucs.
    Make it happen.

  8. jb Says:

I’d love to see the late great Ricky Bell get in the Ring! But, with Sapp being inducted into the HOF this summer, how can you not give him this honor?

  9. Snook Says:

Is this franchise not capable of doing more than one player at once?

How bout all 3? Dungy, Sapp, and Bell?

  10. Adam Says:

It’s going to be Sapp. The HOF gets him a pass to the front of the line.

  11. RastaMon Says:

This is not about your favorite player,as you grew up. This is not the NFL Hall of Fame…..this is about the GREAT Buccaneer players and honoring they has been shamefully mishandled. I know exactly what the bronze plaque on the wall deep in the bowels of the Ole Sombrero looked like…I have seen 100’s of Buc games live…too bad a better job has not been done educating the fan base….but before Free Agency and from early on the Bucs especially on the defensive side had some tough SOB’s that played against stacked teams…Ricky Bell…James Wilder..Doug Williamson ..most certainly belong in the Ring in one grand gesture !.

  12. Youpeoplearesodumb Says:

Rasta – i too have seen 100s of games in person but I don’t remember seeing those three players you named as part of the tough SOB’s defense you are referring to.

Just find it odd that you list three offensive players when making a point about defense.

P.S. that would be Doug Williams

  13. Eric Says:

Love Ricky but Doug is more deserving IMO. He was the leader of that NFC championship game team in 78.

The decline and years of ineptitude before Dungy saved us would have been avoided if they had signed the man rather than cheap out.

Just because he said Dom is an egomaniac shouldn’t enter into it.

  14. Keith Says:

There should be no debate on Ricky Bell. Only those who didn’t see him would question.

  15. RastaMon Says:

My point Youpeoplearesodumb was broader than your narrow mind…Mark Cotney…Mike Washington…Richard Woods…David Logan…

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @RastaMon
Remember Cecil Johnson? Tripped me out a little when I later found out that his brother was part of KC and the Sunshine Band. Them damn 70’s

  17. Youpeoplearesodumb Says:

And next year itwill be #55 after his 2014 HOF induction.

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Youpeoplearesodumb

We had season tickets for quite a while; up until they released Derrick. Sure we still attend a few games every year. But It just hasn’t been the same. Hurt my soul some, the way they treated him on the way out. What the man did on the field, what he meant to the community (smh).

Hopefully we can turn things around this year.

    GO BUCS!!! 1976-to-Infinity

  19. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

a little off topic but still a Bucs jersey question: does anybody know if and when Barron will decide on his new #? kinda sux cuz i bought a Barron Jersey last year but want a Revis one and guess ill need a new Barron one? just wonderin thnx Nation BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. CC Says:

    QB Killa

  21. Luther Says:

Eric, the NFC Championship was in ’79. I was in the stands pretending to sell cokes.

  22. RastaMon Says:

All I am trying to say to those that only know the great Buccaneer’s in the SB era….that were equally great Buc players that were their peer as deserve their names honored !…while the are still alive

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Amen

  24. @eric Says:

HOLA ur an idiot, Ricky Bell wasn’t a bust, you don’t qualify to even comment about a old Buc who took a beating and still produced………run Ricky run….

  25. BucoBruce Says:

    Prediction time!!!!!!!!!!

12-4 and will win at least one playoff game

  26. Mike J Says:

RastaMon, Cedric Brown was a better player than Mark Cotney; he just didn’t make the highlight hits.

  27. Free's A Boob Says:

Tony D played at Pitt. When he came there Pitt was among the worst in college ball and he excelled. Bucs should have taken him.

  28. Eric Says:

    @luther,

You are correct sir. 79 not 78

I may have bought a coke from you!

    @luvmybucs,

Feel the same way brother about 55. All so we could develop a guy who is no longer on the team. Still burns me up.

[If it’s totally off topic, then why post it? In three different threads in fact? Spamming this site isn’t cool. — Joe]

  30. skp Says:

like it or not, gruden deserves to be in before dungy. i haven’t checked the numbers, but i assume dungy had a better winning percentage – that still doesn’t trump a lombardi. dungy has a strong chance of entering the HOF next year, but that has to do with his work across 2 franchises. without gruden winning the big game, both he and tony would just be 2 of the more recognizable names on the very long list of former bucs head coaches. the championship validated both, in a way, and made them historic buccaneers

  31. Joe Says:

    Absolutely agree skp!

  32. sombrero Says:

I can understand that some hearken to days gone by but the days that had gone by 55 when he was released were all he had to offer on a football field. I’m not sure how else the team could have handled the situation since he wasn’t going to retire and he no longer played at an acceptable level for the NFL. That in no way should tarnish the HoF career he had…that he wasn’t willing to admit his time had come speaks to the warrior he had to be to do what he did at his size. The team may not have done a good job replacing him but there is no debate his time had come. Numerous teams with a need at LB’er kept passing on him that year…and that really is the saddest part because I can imagine it was horrible to come to grips with the fact “it” was over.

  33. Oahubuc Says:

I think it will be Donovan McNabb.

  34. scubog Says:

I think this is a special circumstance with Big # 99 being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Of course he should also be inducted into the Ring of Honor the same year. I love reading the names of the 70’s players. Still the Dorsett/Bell debate after all these years. It’s simply an unfair comparison when Tony went to the best team in the NFL and Ricky went to an expansion team. At 190 pounds Dorsett would have been killed. Sadly, as # 42 began getting sick no one knew what was wrong. I don’t know if Ricky’s limited run at stardom warrants a spot in the Ring but his character and struggle to survive deserves a spot in our thoughts. Still have my “Ring your Bell for Tampa” bell on my shelf. That 79 team was special.

  35. Eric Says:

Love Bell but TD was way better and would have Ben here too. Doug had far greater impact.

As for 55, letting him have his last year would have been the way to go rather than embarrassing the man so we could go 3-13.

Even that 2008 defense was top ten and we started 9-3. A play or two away from playoffs rather than the disastrous efforts we have seen since.

  36. Being Ikkles Says:

HOLA you are a moron don’t make ignorant comments about things you do not know of…Ricky Bell was a 1000 yard rusher for Tampa and not close to a bust, he had a debilitating disease that he played with and it took his life…buc’s should induct more than one each year….there are a lot that deserve to get in there…. jerry eckwood, james wilder, doug williams, david logan, hugh green? kevin house? ricky reynolds? i mean the obvious ones are #99, #55, #47, tony dungy, gruden

  37. Slappy Says:

The creation of a Ring of Honor, IMO, started about 10 years too late. When the stadium was opened in 1998, the Glazers should have inducted the 3 men in the Krewe of Honor as the beginning of the ring of honor. On a different topic, I think it’s sad that our Super Bowl win is commemerated by a hard-to-read sail on the pirate ship and a flag on the east side of the stadium. Am happy for Warren on his induction in both the Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor.
