Bucs Add A Defensive End
April 27th, 2013William Gholston, defensive end, Michigan State, is your newest Buccaneer.
Problem with Gholston, other than his cousin is Vernon Gholston, is he is way too inconsistent. At times he looked like Simeon Rice. Other times, he played like Sackless Kyle Moore.
Gholston, physically, is everything you would want from a defensive end, and is a bit of a freakish athlete at 6-7, 273 pounds, but too often he takes off plays.
Joe is convinced Bucs coach Greg Schiano will not tolerate such nonsense, a guy not getting the most of his talent.
Mike Mayock made the same point on NFL Network, while Les Miles, sitting next to Mayock on the NFL Network set, said he was stunned a guy of Gholston’s talent went so late in the draft. Miles said he was after Gholston in high school.
Here’s an interesting Detroit Free Press feature on Gholston, which makes a case he probably should have stayed in school since he has so much upside.

Great. Another Big 10 pick. Yuck.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:35 pm
Yes! Been calling this for two days now. Excellent pick. Superbly gifted athlete with unlimited upside. Check out his highlights. Plays sort of like a bigger version of Jason Taylor. Love it!
April 27th, 2013 at 1:35 pm
Who’s Simeon Rick?
April 27th, 2013 at 1:37 pm
I like that it’s a high upside pick. We’ll see.

Rockstar! Rockstar! Rockstar!
April 27th, 2013 at 1:37 pm
Adding Gholston gives us some fantastic quality depth at DE. Plus he has the ability, like Michael Bennett, to move inside on passing downs and provide just as much quality pass rush from that position. I’m more excited about this pick than any other except Johnthan Banks.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:39 pm
I think the bucs just redeemed themselves with this pick
April 27th, 2013 at 1:40 pm
Are we forgetting about the return of George Selvie, hopefully he returns to college form and gives us good depth, still concerned about LB depth
April 27th, 2013 at 1:43 pm
If Schiano straightens him out we will be saying many prayers of thanks that he was inconsistant in collage thus falling to us this late in the draft. He can be a great player. Round one talent when he is on.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:44 pm
Build up that pass rush to go with the new secondary. With only 2 picks left, do they get a return guy? Maybe a back up RB or a O lineman? Or maybe they get a TE because Freeman doesn’t have enough wepons
April 27th, 2013 at 1:44 pm
@Flboyindallas
Great pick. To get a guy who was seen as a 1st round talent this late is great. His game reminds me of Mike Bennett’s. Either way he’s got great talent.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:45 pm
YES we got William Gholston 6’6″ 281 Michigan St….Luv how this kid knocks down passes
April 27th, 2013 at 1:47 pm
I wonder if will we trade Blount to Detroit at the top of the 5th
April 27th, 2013 at 1:50 pm
CLAP CLAP CLAP for Marcus Lattimore… Pulling for the kid
April 27th, 2013 at 1:50 pm
The word INCONSISTENT is killing me. The last three draft picks have that word to there name…
April 27th, 2013 at 1:51 pm
@SensibleBuc
Totally agree. Right on. Coming into the 2012 season he was graded as a first round pick. He only fell because of inconsistency this year. Bucs fans are gonna love this guy when they see what he’s capable of.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:54 pm
Inconsistency tends to not show as much in a rotation. Full time starter it shows when you are taking off plays. He will shine in this defense as a rotation DE/DT
April 27th, 2013 at 1:54 pm
I think our draft so far stinks we being talked about as being draft losers
April 27th, 2013 at 1:54 pm
Inconsistency with linemen usually is corrected by good coaching. This guy has a huge upside….very much worth this pick.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:54 pm
@LUVMYBUCS:
Agree on Lattimore. Pulling for the kid.
And really glad SF took him right before ATL. I wouldn’t want him in Atlanta.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:55 pm
What team got Revis with this draft?
The Bucs.
Win.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:56 pm
Coach him up, Bryan Cox!!! Coach the Big 10 sorriness out of him.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:56 pm
NY Bucs Fan = Jets fan in disguise?
April 27th, 2013 at 1:58 pm
For fans who’ve done some research and aren’t focused on big names but who are familiar with some of these players, this is a good draft for the Bucs. Media grades on drafts are rubbish and not worth considering. They tend to focus on familiar names (like the stupid Honey Badger, etc) and don’t do real scouting research. As a Bucs fan I’m completely satisfied with this draft.
April 27th, 2013 at 1:59 pm
Lol @ bucsfanforever.
+1
April 27th, 2013 at 2:00 pm
Umm no I hate the jets. We will see banks is the only one that might start in the nfl
April 27th, 2013 at 2:05 pm
Great draft, not really but a good draft none the less, however it is good to be drafting for depth, knowing that our young starters are growing together and if healthy, this can be good for years
April 27th, 2013 at 2:06 pm
Every player we have drafted so are what inconstant. And started only 13 or 14 games
April 27th, 2013 at 2:09 pm
@Snook
Yeah he’s a great kid. Frank Gores experience with similar injuries should bold well for the young man. Wish him all the best.
April 27th, 2013 at 2:11 pm
NY…I would think a guy from New York would know something about the effect of no nonsense discipline. Shianno and the rest of the coaching staff won’t put up with loafing underachievers. Every decision and method he has used at this time is to get the young men to grow up and accept personal responsibility. They will either shape up, or over a three year contract tenure will be out of the league.
So I’m not as worried about this as you. Or is NY getting soft.
April 27th, 2013 at 2:16 pm
I like this pick, if we aren’t SB contenders or a solid playoff team then we failed.
April 27th, 2013 at 2:27 pm
I love the coaching just don’t see any real starters besides banks. I like what we did this offseason
April 27th, 2013 at 2:31 pm
Another reach in the middle rounds. Neither one are elite athletes or technicians. The middle rounds have not produced much for us over the years and both 4th rounders Show us why.
April 27th, 2013 at 2:33 pm
We need to Go Offense WR/TE now
April 27th, 2013 at 2:38 pm
I hereby declare NY Bucs Fan an idiot.
April 27th, 2013 at 3:04 pm
It’s a 5th round pick…at least we didn’t take a punter this time.
