Will Team Glazer Influence Wright Decision?

March 25th, 2013

Bucs fans will soon find out the Tampa Bay fate of letdown cornerback Eric Wright, known for drug suspensions, spa days while suspended and, to be fair, arguably the best interception return in Bucs history.

But Joe’s now wondering whether Team Glazer will exercise executive powers and order rockstar general manager Mark Dominik to rid the Bucs of Wright because Wright is not the new breed of Buccaneer Man.

Speaking to Tampa Tribune veteran eye-RAH! Kaufman at the NFL owners meetings, Joel Glazer explained that the Bucs have little tolerance for those of questionable character.

Q: The Bucs have had their share of off-field incidents in recent years. With all the talk about character, does the franchise have to do even more due diligence in researching players?

A: That’s a tremendous focus for us and nothing disturbs us more than an incident with a player. It puts a bad shine on the organization. It’s not good for the player and our tolerance has definitely gotten shorter. We just can’t tolerate role models not upholding the highest character of our community.

Hmm, has Wright upheld the highest character of our community?

Look Joe’s not expecting a bunch of choir boys on the Bucs. Hell, DaQuan Bowers is a real-life choir boy, and he’s rolling around packing heat in the wrong places.

But Joe’s not feeling anything good from Wright. He’s overpaid, underperforming, banged up, and the Bucs have the chance to cut him without financial consequence and sign one of several other cornerbacks on the market. It should be an easy decision.

I will be surprised if Wright is not cut.

  2. OnTheTOP1 Says:

I like Wright ,so he pop a pill,he is our best CB,let it go and let’s roll

  3. SeanyMac in SC Says:

I was surprised when the Bucs hired him and would be even more surprised if we don’t cut him loose.

  4. robert Says:

    he’s a great #2.

now if irkel could just grow some dreads or somethin!!

  5. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I would have liked to keep him at a lower salary, but this pretty much says it all.

  6. 4everBucsFan Says:

Wright received a hero’s welcome from the Bucs when he signed last year. He made an opening statement about how he can help bring veteran leadership to the secondary and how much he considered himself to be that “Buccaneer Man” the Bucs were looking for. Personally, despite the fact of Eric taking adderall, I believe the Bucs were more disappointed that he let the team down at such a crucial time of the season.

  7. BuccFanInHawkeyeCountry Says:

Cut him n give his salary to two cornerbacks that are free agents.

  8. Macabee Says:

With all that been said and done, even the impact of the owners opinion, coupled with the loss of Wright’s grievance, and the overwhelming public opinion that wright should go, and Schiano being a no nonsense guy, anybody want explain why he’s still there?

Think they’re just busy with FA, forgot he’s still there, or like the common cold it just has to run it’s course?

I think there’s more to it than anybody is saying because since the grievance was denied, it’s been too easy to just flush the toilet!

My opinion, if they had cut Wright at the beginning of FA, he wins because, Adderall aside, he’s a better CB than most of this year’s class and he would get picked up. And Eric Wright is a talker in the vein of Winslow. Why have Wright on the talk radio circuit badmouthing the org and becoming the poster child for a why nobody in their Wright (pun) mind would ever want to play there.

No. ERighteous is right (no pun) where he should be for now – on ice!

  9. BuccFanInHawkeyeCountry Says:

I think theyre not cutting him because that would be doing him a favor. Let everybody that wants cornerbacks go eat up all the current free agents so theres lesser need for him. Once we get our situation settled as well then let him go. Is there a certain date that he has to be released by?

  10. tampabaybucfan Says:

I doubt very seriously that the Glazers will dictate to Dom & Schiano….it’s just not their style. I am sure they would support whatever decision is made and that should be to
    1. Trade Wright
    2. Renegotiate his contract
    3. Cut him
It all depends on the Revis deal.

I think they really want to get rid of him and probably will.

  11. Buc'N'iT Says:

@BucFan I bekieve we can release him uo intil the last day if free agenvy and even then I believe then he is only guaranted his gsme played check

  12. dan Says:

wright, blount and this years 2nd and a conditional 3rd

    for revis.

  13. passthebuc Says:

    And Revis fits that mold?????????????

  14. Macabee Says:

    BFHIC,

The short answer is NO! There is no date by which he must be released. A better answer is he should be released before they have to pay the 1st game check in September.

As you will remember that in the NFL, no player contracts are guaranteed. Only salary is guaranteed. A player can be released at will, however any guaranteed money must be paid. That is where the wright contract has been voided, the Bucs are not obligated to pay any money if Wright is released in 2013. There was no money guaranteed beyond 2013 anyway. What I don’t know is if they pay the 1st game check at the current rate, are they obligated to pay that rate for the remainder of the year which would make September the obvious latest date to release Wright. I will research.

But that is the only place where the contract is null and void, otherwise the contract is in effect and is in force. Wright can go nowhere until he is a FA (2017) or until the Bucs release him. He is owed no roster or workout bonuses. To pay any different amount, the contract would have to be amended or a new contract is agreed to.

Everything is controlled by the Bucs at this point!

That interception return was so sick , i forgot about that with all the negativity. I hadnt gone that crazy since matt bryant hit that 62 yarder

JOE: “He’s overpaid, underperforming, banged up, and the Bucs have the chance to cut him without financial consequence and sign one of several other cornerbacks on the market. It should be an easy decision.”

I would like to point out that there is an “AND” in the above statement and I would say you can’t do Part 1 and NOT do Part 2.

  17. DanTheMan Says:

He is a decent nickel corner, an atrocious number 2, and a liability as a #1. Please for the love of god cut him and get this over with.

  18. BucFan20 Says:

For one thing we do not know how he is in the locker room. We do know he has beaten up NO cab drivers, hit NO player on the team with a helmet and NO problem with granny. Don’t use a double standard between him and Bowers . If you think Bowers excuse of OOPS I forgot I had a gun is a real excuse, then you must believe people don’t put money in overseas bank accounts to avoid US taxes. I am sure we would all pack a bag with a firearm. Know we are going to the airport and forget about it.

Who would you rather have Gorrer, Lewis or Wright? Pick your poison. Even if the Revis deal does happen there is still no real depth. And don’t say they draft because that is always a maybe maybe not.

  19. buccfaninhawkeyecountry Says:

Everythings a maybe maybe not? Asomugha was the “2nd best Corner in the league” what happened to that? Pick a poison? How about Revis Xavier Rhodes/Trufant, Ronde, Leonard Johnson and Gorrer. seems like a good poison to me. And also Myron Lewis from what ive been reading i guess. Oops i said the draft, but someone once said you can get good football players out of that.

  20. zam Says:

It’s nice that the Glazers finally learned the hard way not to employ rapists. Would have been nicer about 10 years ago.

  21. MadMax Says:

Hold him for now while all of the other CB’s get snatched up in FA and the draft. That drives down demand for him, and therefore his price. I like it.

Nice move on the GM’s part. And when he doesnt want to renegotiate for a fairer price, let him walk.

  22. BucFan20 Says:

Asomugha is Not here. Rhonde already burnt badly for 2 years. May not return. Johnson is a great prospect from what we have seen. Gorrer and Lewis. Well we have seen that story already. If he stays he will be back on the bench again. So now there are two great looking draft picks we may or may not draft. We still have no depth. One thing is for sure. If Revis does come here after he gets his big payday, hope he does not become a Fat Albert.

  23. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Bowers aside because I don’t agree with you assessment, BucFan20, I DO agree about Wright. But there is no way he is worth his current contract. If he refuses to do a new, reduced deal, the Bucs would be force to release him…because if they keep him without a new deal, the original contract will become valid once more.
