The Darrelle Revis Debate

March 26th, 2013

After Ronde Barber fielded questions about his future or non-future with the Bucs last night on NFL Network, a pair of stud defensive backs, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders and Pro Bowler Ryan Clark, debated the merits of the Bucs coughing up a first- and a second-round pick for Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis in this NFL Network video.

You may be surprised to hear what they have to say and why. Both agree but for far different reasons.

Revis can’t win the game for you? There are at least 3 or 4 games last year the Bucs would have won if he’d been their corner, maybe even more.

And the Bucs aren’t one piece away? Maybe but if they’d have won said games they’d have been 11-5 and in the playoffs. And maybe he’s the missing piece for 3 years from now, that’s no reason not to get him today.

The only valid argument is the injury, and that’s a big “if” in my humble opinion.

  2. nick Says:

We want everyone to think including the jets to think we wont be any kind of contender with revis so they go ahead and give him up to us but the truth is how ravens or 49’s didnt even have 1 shut down corner and how many teams have 2. all the bucs need is one shut down corner and a defensive tackle, defensive ends havent done enough to date but who says they cant have a break out year. people are scared about losing roy miller but he never played passing down and didnt play 50% of the snaps and when he wasnt in the game, the run defense didnt miss a beat

  3. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I hate the BS line about “they’re not one piece away”. Plenty of teams have gotten into the playoffs via wildcards and have shocked the “favorites”. Any given sunday chumps. Only thing this team needs to get over the hump is a few solid corners and consistency across the board.

  4. tampabaybucfan Says:

Having Revis would improve our entire team….not just the secondary. He would provide the needed time for our pass rush to be successful. We don’t have to have Revis to contend….but I like our chances a lot better with him. I think we can afford to wait the Jets out and pick him up on our terms. I agree that having a healthy Revis last year would have probably netted us an additional 3 games.

  5. mvermulm Says:

The key here is if he is healthy. If the FO gives up two high picks for Revis, and then he misses the beginning of the season or isn’t his old self and/or gets hurt again, the team is giving away potentially two starters for one with a huge contract who can’t play. That would leave us essentially down three starters. That type of a move cripples teams. I’d rather us just keep the picks, and keep building.

  6. Pinnaql3 Says:

I agree with them both. The BUCS are NOT one “shutdown” cornerback away from being a threat to a Super Bowl. There are still bog questions about the pass rush, the defensive scheme itself AND the QB. I’m still of the belief that Freeman’s play cost the team more games than the terrible play at CB.
I also believe that if/when Wright is gone that will rid the team of all the corners that got killed in coverage last season. Including Gorrer with Wright as well. The backups played better than the starters, in my opinion. Picking up corners in the draft will do the team good. No need to mortgage the future for an injured player.

  7. MadMax Says:

It doesnt bother me one bit they think we’re not that high caliber team thats one player away from the SB….(yep, keep underestimating please) and since we can just get him next year after he walks, lets just wait now.

We’ll probably have a decent season, year number 2 under Schiano, and we’ll be able to use our 1st next year on a QB in case Freeman has major issues.

We can land CB and DT and RT options this year, and maybe even be able to trade up for Clowney next year…and still sign Revis. Oh yeah!

  8. SteveK Says:

Revis needs to be a Buc.

He is the best CB in the game, and we boast the worst unit of CBs in the game.

I am 100,000,000% dumfounded by: 1) Eric Wright still on the books at 8m per, 2) Myron Lewis has a roster spot (We would be better off giving the spot to LeGrand, as brings more to the table on inspiration alone).

What is Dominick doing, we have 35m in cap space.

I am shocked that Eric Wright and Myron Lewis are still on the books.

Don’t we still have our savior Danny Gorrer?

C’mon Glazers and Dominick, THE TIME IS NOW (Trade whatever necessary for Revis… we are in dire straights..)

  9. T in Orlando Says:

    @ SteveK

How can we be in “dire straights” right now, as we’re over a month from the first OTAs. From a team prep stand point, what difference does it make if we get him now or a couple days before the draft (as some people are speculating)?

Granted, I would like the speculation to be over, and regardless of what happens with Revis, feel we should be bringing someone in via FA (Quentin Jammer would be a pretty good #2 CB), but there really is no difference between getting Revis now or 4 weeks from now on the eve of the draft.

  10. tampabaybucfan Says:

    StevieK

Be patient on the Revis trade….time is on our side, not the Jets. We are practicly the only team they can deal with. I am sure the hangup is over this year’s #1 pick that we don’t want to give up.
We can always do that right before the draft if necessary….but I think we will get our way and give up our 2014 pick…..which I hope will be #32.

  11. Buc Fan #238 Says:

    @SteveK

Thank the LORD you are not a decision maker. Settle down.

  12. Jeagan1999 Says:

How many games last year did we lose because of a porous secondary? Revis could have vaulted the Bucs into the playoffs if he was healthy. Now with Goldson and Barron at Safety, Revis, Ronde and maybe another young corner…add a good young DT in the draft…I think the Bucs CAN challenge for a playoff spot this year!

  13. Nate Says:

This is a nice smoke screen for us.. the jets will have to meet our demands

  14. SteveK Says:

    Buc fan #238 and others,

When was the last time we went to the playoffs? 2008, lost to the Redskins in Wild Card wknd…

When was the last time we won a playoff game? It has been 10 years.

Myself, and others in the fan base have been waiting *patiently* for the Glazers and Dominick to improve our CB position.

Why does Eric Wright and Myron Lewis still have a job? One is not a team player, and the other just flat out stinks….

I feel that our ownership/brass/GM is NOT TRYING, by simply keeping Eric Wright (look up what he did at USC…consistent knuckleheaded fool).

Again, why is Myron Lewis on the roster?

Glazers, Dominick, Schiano, Butch Davis, and anyone else: SIGN SOME FREAKING TALENT, and CUT BAIT with most of our WORTHLESS CBs.

Ownership wants a SELL OUT, then they need to stop SELLING OUT on the Fans.

Mutiny on the ship, unitl Myron is CUT, Wright is CUT/SIGNED TO 50%, and a NEW CB in FA is pursued.

Standing pat and letting it come to us is just not working. Are we ever going back to the playoffs?

Is everyone here ok with Mediocre Mark Dominick?

Bruce Allen was fired, hired, traded the farm. and WON THE NFC EAST last year.

It says something when we need to rebuild for 10 years, and the Dan Snyder Redskins can do it in 3-5.

At what point is the GM held accountable?

  15. Buc Fan #238 Says:

SteveK for the next Bucs General Manager!!!

    Not in your lifetime bud.

  16. BuccFanInHawkeyeCountry Says:

Yeah let’s just say f it. Hershel walker the trade even tho were not bidding against anybody. Then lets Ricky Williams next years draft to move up n take the first pick in this draft. Do whatever it takes. Or maybe we can just sign the rest of the free agent cornerbacks n have 7 corners on the field at once.

  17. Joe Says:

    Quality rant SteveK 🙂

  18. tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ StevieK

Wow! You couldn’t have been a Buc fan for very long. Those of us who have (1976 Season Ticket Holder) have learned to be patient. Yes….it is frustrating to see Byron & Eric still on the roster, but being on the roster now doesn’t mean anything. We have a purpose for keeping them there probably….because we can.
Guaranteed our starting CBs will be unquestionabally better than last year!!!

  19. Joe Says:

    Steve:

What if the Bucs believe Eric Wright is better than what is out there now? You do realize the Bucs had a winning record when he started, right?

  20. tampabaybucfan Says:

    Joe

Wright is the “back-up” plan….because we can!

  21. Sneedy16 Says:

    SteveK

The Redskins traded the farm for a player who had one good year. Josh had one good year the thing is can he repeat it after the NFL has a year to adjust to him. Bruce didn’t trade the farm Shanahan had a big part in that trade and he made it known. When Bruce left this roster is was the NFL retirement home and had to be purge. He was bad at drafting and would only have one or tow quality players.

I’m not say that Dom is a great GM, but to start from scatch with your first gig is a little dificult. To race to trade for a player now make because you feel the need is just silly. Revis will be there until after the draft. Teams will start cutting expensive players after June so there will probably be another round of free agency.

  22. SteveK Says:

    Sneedy16,

    We need to WIN BABY!

    Now, now, now.

  23. SteveK Says:

    Sneedy16,

RG3 > Freeman… It only took 16 games to sniff that one out. Barring health, RG3 is s SUPER STAR.

When was the last time Tampa Bay had a Super Star? I thought we knew how to draft..

    Steve:

What if the Bucs believe Eric Wright is better than what is out there now? You do realize the Bucs had a winning record when he started, right?

Great question Joe, How much did Sean Smith sign for? I would weigh the options and see what the BEST CB VALUE is to be had.

I am not sure if it would be better to sign a cheaper, older guy for 1 or 2 years, or go out and sign the best FA CB, Sean Smith, and use Wright’s money to pay for most of the salary. It just sickens me to see Wright stay on board, if Talib had to go (especially).

  25. Buc Fan #238 Says:

Eric Wright. Best CB on the team. Best in free agency as of now.
Myron Lewis. 3rd round draft pick. Stays on the team because of that.
Revis. Not worth the trade request.
Draft. Do the Bucs draft a DT or a CB with #13?
Free Agency today: There are still a few left.

What do the Bucs have to offer? A starting CB spot. Oh wait, maybe not… because we STILL have the luxuray of Eric Wright and perhaps Barber will come back now. Perhaps we can still sign a guy like Donte Hall?

  26. Buc Fan #238 Says:

It makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER to release Eric Wright or Myron Lewis today, 3-26-2013. NONE.

Whoever thinks that we should just randomly cut these resources with no replacements in place needs to have their head examined.

  27. SteveK Says:

    Buc Fan 238,

D’Angelo Hall is the same as Wright, but he won’t get suspended for idiocy, so that is an improvement.

Myron Lewis is a 3rd round pick, awesome! Too bad Jimmy Graham wasn’t our 3rd round pick instead…. Oh well, we can be *patient* and draft accordingly (draft miserably).

I would rather have the Bucs select Bo Jackson (again), then pick Myron Lewis.

Myron Lewis is not NFL material, I don’t know who they are fooling… He is 6’2” solid BABY.

  28. SteveK Says:

    Buc Fan 238,

It is harder to cut Wright, now, than it was when FA opened up?

Why did we DO NOTHING for CBs when FA opened up?

Looks to me, and hopefully other fans, that the Bucs CHOSE TO DO NOTHING ABOUT CB IN FA, and now we are PIDGEON HOLED.

Yippy! 3 cheers to mediocrity and a last place finish in the NFC South for 3 years in a row. Hip hip, Hooray! Hail to mediocre Mark, and the MOVES he isn’t making…..

  29. Curmudgeon Says:

    Maybe settle down.
Or continue to get your panties wadded.
    Revis is not the savior.
    Other answers will become clear.
New CBs will come through the draft.

Understand the first letter of each line.

  30. bucsfan2497 Says:

i cant stand the ppl who put all the blame on freeman. theres no doubt that he is far from elite but hes not the reason we lose games. he has played bad in games but the secondary plays bad In every game. last season freeman killed it against the saints. passed for 420 yards, and we still lost. sure, drew brees is an amazing qb, but a better secondary and we limit a few of those tds and win that game

  31. Pewter_Power Says:

    @Steve K,
Bruce Allen was a much worse gm than Domonik. When he got fired the roster was way too old and mostly devoid of talent because of his poor drafting. If it wasn’t for Jon Gruden being able to coach people up we would’ve easily been the worst team in the league towards the end if his tenure. When Domonik took this job he totally had to rebuild the roster from the bottom up. As far as RG3 being better than Freeman, I dont think so. He has already shown that he isn’t big enough or durable enough to take the pounding of running the read option in the NFL. Cam Newton doesn’t come along every day. How many plays did they run where RG3 threw from the pocket? Not many. He gets all the hype but RG3 can’t hold Andrew Luck’s jock strap

  32. Sneedy16 Says:

    SteveK

Do some research on Sean Smith. Guy is just as inconsistent as they come. He has good games and just disappears in others. To me Eric is better than Sean. Sean has no recovery speed and gets beat on double moves and Eric can hold his own when healthy. That Deanglo comment was funny. They guy gets more personal fouls and pass interference calls than most CB’s in the league. He started every game for the 2nd worst pass defense. At least we can say that the defense improved when Eric played.

  33. teacherman777 Says:

Last year we signed 3 bigname FA’s.

But you guys were still bitchin about nor signing a LB.

    And oops!

    We were fine!

You guys were sure we would take Mo Claiborne.

    Oops! Wrong again.

You guys, the malcontent whiners on here are full of it. Clueless malcontents.

    Just wait.

Schiano ihas fot this ship headed in the right direction.

    Go Bucs!

  34. Northend Says:

Teacherman , +1 Don’t try to makes sense of the nonsense on this board. No matter what Domenick(Yes Bucs fans,he is a stud, smart and very talented Gm)does the masses will bitch about something.
Hell, even if we did nothing else but draft 2new cornrers and put them back with Ronde,Wright and Lj we would be much better than last season.Goldson was a great signing and our pass rush will be also helped in draft.

  35. Raphael Says:

@stevek. I Think your estrogen levels are all out of whack !

  36. Bobby Says:

    SteveK…..we just need Trent Richardson!!!!
    ;>)

  37. feelthepewterpower Says:

Now it’s a first AND second rounder for Revis? “I don’t think so, homey don’t play that”. How about the Buccs say….look we’ll give you a first round pick for next years draft, and drag it out saying we were waiting on Revis’s health report in June. That way they can comeback and say, hey we changed our mind were only going to offer a second and fourth round pick in next year’s draft for Mr. Revis…….By that time the Jets will be forced to either pay Revis, or give into the demands of the Bucs. Certainly no team is going to want to give up a number one and number two to him, let alone any number pick!!! Just my two cents Joe!!
