Schiano Down On QB’s “Calculated Risk Taking”

December 23rd, 2012

The leader of the New Schiano Order offered a rare criticism of Josh Freeman after today’s silencing by the Rams.

Schiano was talking about the highs and lows of Freeman and said his quarterback needs to know more about making the right moves in the Bucs offense.

“I think calculated risk taking is a huge component of quality quarterback play,” Schiano said. “And you need to know, ‘Hey, this is a risk we’re willing to take. This is a risk we’re not.’ And again, I’ll put it on me. Certainly we have to get that communicated better. Because we have to make, and we’ve done it, you know, it’s not, ‘Oh I hope it happens some day.’ It’s already happened. So we’ve got to have it. I keep coming back to this word, consistency. We have to do it. Because there are some plays out there today that are outstanding offensive football plays, but it doesn’t matter when you sprinkle them in with the turnovers.”

As Schiano said, the Bucs and Freeman have “done it” before this season. They’ve had huge days on offense. The preparation and coaching helped get them there, but now it’s as if Freeman has lost it mentally.

Unfortunately, it’s rare, very rare, for a veteran quarterback, which Freeman is after 55 starts, to be able to fix inconsistency.

As the Rock Star said “It’s all about #5. We go..as Josh goes” He’s regressing in every aspect from head to toe

  2. Have A Nice Day Says:

    Anybody want my Freeman Jersey?

  3. PRBucFan Says:

    Finally the truth…

“Because there are some plays out there today that are outstanding offensive football plays, but it doesn’t matter when you sprinkle them in with the turnovers.”

All it takes is for Schiano to start seeing and we are in for some major changes.

Good game tonight, a 2nd round QB, Kapernick, vs a 3rd rounder: Russ Wilson.

For the Buc fans interested in QB play, take a look and see, we may be getting a 2nd or 3rd rounder next draft.

  7. PRBucFan Says:

Joe get rid of these pop ups please lol

  8. MadMax Says:

@SteveK that one is my highlight today….must see tv…well, other than watching my gf’s Giants get stomped by Baltimore, lol.

  9. CC Says:

For all you people who are on Schiano, get a grip. Hes not the one turning the ball over. He’s not the one who can make a throw in the red zone. He’s not the one who cant pass block. He’s not the one who lets a TE score an 80 yard tuchdown. There are to many players on this team including the QB that are just not good enough to be first team starters in the NFL. Plain and F***ing sinple.

  10. SteveK Says:

    DOM DRAFTED FREEMAN.

    DOM SIGNED SCHIANO.

    DOM IS DOOMED.

  11. Gt40bear Says:

    Two words…Norv Turner.

  12. PRBucFan Says:

Dom had arguably one of the best drafts we have seen in a long time.
    MB
    DM
    LD will all be probowers
We moved around to get them all
Najee and Tandy will be productive aswell for us in a season or two.

  13. REDDMAN Says:

Mark Dominick for 1 dollar and a six pack of Sam Adams I’ll tell you how to fix this team.

  14. CC Says:

@ PR. His drafts up to this year have not been good.

  15. Macabee Says:

The good news is that everybody is now of the opinion that a change needs to be made at the QB position. The bad news is this cannot be fixed quickly. There are no RGIIIs or Lucks out there that can win now. This is the kind of turmoil that can change administrations and Schiano knows it.

You know something is really wrong because Dominik has disappeared. He knows that with this type of season ending the price to get top level FAs (CBs) to come here just went way up. The risk is we grossly overpay or settle for the Eric Wrights of the NFL.

    This is a mess!

  16. MadMax Says:

As much as we need to fix the secondary….we should throw the kitchen sink in the draft at getting Geno Smith or Mike Glennon or Aaron Murray!

    Its over for Gosh already!

  17. Tye Says:

Freeman ~ “No good” in College
Freeman ~ 55 NFL games later still “No Good”

Mediocre and below Qbs in college usually do not pan out in the NFL… If only there was a way that we could see that coming…. Oh yeah, Many of us did!… Last 4 years wasted and counting as long as Freeman is still starting…. With great hope I pray that whoever is responsible for picking the next QB to start for the Bucs knows what he is doing, unlike the last goof!

  18. PRBucFan Says:

All I’m saying is that aside from the CB disaster we have made all the moves and have most all the pieces in place to win now. It’s up to the players to perform.

  19. SteveK Says:

I’ll take a flier on Tebow. He’s at least won a playoff game.

  20. CC Says:

Could have easily been 6 picks today, possibly more.

  21. SteveK Says:

Take a shot on Vick too. Bring in Cock and Tebow, and run on every down.

  22. PRBucFan Says:

Yes. He’s won but if there’s one player that has worse accuracy than Free its Tebow hahaha.

  23. CC Says:

So called experts bitch about Tebow’s mechanics and say he will never be an NFL QB. Freemans mechanics leave alot to be desired as well. Seems to me he is making the same mistakes he made in college.

  24. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

When I said before this season that Gosh’s mechanics were a mirror image of Tebow’s, I was drawn and quartered.

  25. Bucsfanforever Says:

The fact is that Freeman is just not that good. We spent all this money on V Jax and drafted a great RB in Martin plus we brought in Dallas Clark and this guy still can’t beat the Eagles or the Rams. Time to move on. He makes worse decisions than a politician.

  26. FloridaGirl Says:

See earlier post re where the offense is at with reading coverages, etc….calculated risk taking relies upon everyone being on the same page. We’re nowhere near there. The play calling staff needs to realize that the offense is not in sync and cannot be trusted to reach appropriate play calls or reads based off of what they see. KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid, and call something that doesn’t take thought process to run. Just running a play = doing what they’re told and having it work will do wonders for everyone’s psyche.

Note bene…..not saying the guys are stupid…..perhaps this offensive scheme is a little more than they can handle…..

  27. Nate Says:

Freeman you are getting worse everyone in my section 313 was booing you..

  28. Buc Fan #238 Says:

    Poor guy.

Its not like Tampa is selling out the games… so on the bright side, nobody is watching.

Give Josh 1 more year. We’ll see if he turns out to be Trent Dilfer or Vinny Testeverde for the Bucs. He may go down as yet another 1st round Buccaneer drafted QB that never took the franchise anywhere.

    We miss ya Brad Johnson.

  29. Brandon Says:

Sullivan’s playcalling wasn’t helping anybody. Lining up in shotgun repeatedly on 1st and goal and plenty of time on the clock made no sense. Going into hurry up mode with time left in the 3rd quarter and abandoning the running game while only being down 2 scores also made no sense.

BTW, Joe, 55 starts is a good amount but when a guy is only 24 the development still takes time. Alex Smith, Steve Young, Rich Gannon, and many many others were able to develop their consistency over time. He’s 24 folks, Aaron Rodgers hadn’t even started his first game, Drew Brees was being booed in San Diego at that age, Brett Favre was being booed in Green Bay. Be patient… by saying be patient I’m saying you don’t have to be happy but at least realize that the best is yet to come.

  30. Drew Says:

The issue is not coaching. The issue is Freeman in one word, he SUCKS!

  31. PRBucFan Says:

Experience in this league is based off yrs played not your age.

  32. Drew Says:

    @Brandon

Are you referring to Ryan Leaf best or some other QB who had high expectations that never panned out?

  33. Jarret Says:

Joe Im waiting for your next article so I can bash freeman some more lol

  34. 911bucs Says:

We can’t put up with freeman for one more year. His time is done here. Next please.

  35. Bobby C Says:

As soon as possible, i would send free to kansas city, for draft picks and kiss this chapter of Buccaneer football, time to move on. Simple as that time to move on.

  36. PRBucFan Says:

Even Bobby has joined the darkside

  37. Ultra conservative Says:

@ Brandon…simply bc some QBs did better later in their career as they got older doesn’t mean they got better BECAUSE they got older. Age is not an excuse and Josh has show no improvement at all in his 55 games.

Talk to RG3, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Christian Ponder, Russell Wilson, Mathew Stafford, Sam Bradford, and Colin Kaepernick about being young and leading their teams. There is absolutely no evidence from Josh Freeman that the best is yet to come. He’s making all of the same mistakes that he always has and never in his career has he been a high completion passer.

  38. BucFan20 Says:

Here goes the “he’s only 24” BS again. IT’s the coaches calling the wrong plays. Every excuse except FREEMAN from the same BLIND people. The excuses are over. It’s been the line, receivers, coaches, the system, the field, the helmet, shoes, janitors, refs, fans, web sites, lights to bright. Anything else you want to blame???
HE IS What HE IS!! NOT an NFL caliber QB period. He was given his toys and he could not figure out what to do with them. Do you really think people are going to pay hard earned money (EXPENSIVE) to go watch this clown. As soon as I heard them make a joke on the radio about him throwing the ball over the crossbar and staring down receivers again I knew where this game was going.
If he pulls this again against the birds I am not sure he is not done.

  39. raphael Says:

what a bunch of dumbasses …lol

  40. Drew Says:

    Inaccurate in High School
    Inaccurate in College
    Inaccurate in the NFL

    Inaccurate at his next Gig

  41. 76buc76 Says:

He’ll get his final year in his contract. But he’ll have some company Orlovski and a drafted Rookie. Each will have an equal chance at the job.He is from Kansas so maybe the chief’s swap 1st rounder’s for him.Freeman has probably come to relize that whatever happen’s next year. His back is against the wall and if he stink’s the place out.He won’t be in the league in 2014.All of a sudden QB prospect’s are all over the place.Non starter’s like Flynn,Vick,Cousins,Mallett have more value and upside than Freeman not to mention college prospect’s like Smith and Brinkley.I don’t think he can be trusted even if we get this thing turned around next year.Say we make the wildcard spot next year.Chances are those 5 grossly inaccurate throw’s he makes EVERY game will come back to haunt us.He would be way more accurate if they put his anchor leg was in a cast with a slight knee bend. His accuracy issue’s are all because of that anchor leg.Or as I like to call it the SPRING of death

  42. Drew Says:

No IT factor in High School
    No IT factor in College
No IT factor in the NFL

No IT factor at his next Gig

  43. crazy Says:

There’s plenty of blame to go around. Running Freeman in to the ground isn’t going to fix anything and is unlikely to change any minds at One Buc. Nobody on this team is performing so well their position wouldn’t benefit from stronger competition. We knew this was the beginning of a rebuilding effort. We’re learning a little more rebuilding is needed than expected.

  44. Drew Says:

Not to mention he throws like a LITTLE GIRL.

  45. Drew Says:

    @Crazy

It makes us feel good and helps to vent the anger by driving him in to the ground.

  46. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

Yo Crazy, this is the 4th year on this rebuild. Remember that day when they dropped the axe on those Buccaneer legends.

Drafting Geno might give the Little General and the Rockstar a couple more years before they get fired.

  47. jLM Says:

    Alex Smith.

  48. Patrick Says:

Miguel, I don’t want Dummynick being the one who drafts us another quarterback. I would sign Alex Smith or Kyle Orton to either push Freeman or take his job if he continues to suck.

  49. greg slother Says:

I am so sick of “who’s better out there?” Watch Wilson tonight, a 3rd round pick. He’s 6 inches shorter but has 60 IQ points on the moron. We need a smart QB.

  50. Patrick Says:

The Bucs have been LOSERS under Freeman. Every season is always a “wait till next year” attitude; i’m sick of it. Freeman should be taking this team places by now, he’s not. He sucks. He better get it together or he’ll be on the bench next year. I want to be proud of my team again.

  51. lurker Says:

the bucs will take a cb in the first round, either the first or second one off the board. a qb could be taken in the 2nd or 3rd. geno will probably be gone before the bucs pick, and barkley is just a creation of his offensive line and receivers at usc.

  52. lurker Says:

ps that is if the bics pick 11-14 or so

  53. PRBucFan Says:

    Top 10 is completely possible

  54. Rob Says:

If the Bucs want to sell tickets next year, trade Gish for the best pick or picks possible. Throw in Blount to sweeten the deal. Maybe someone like KC will swap 1st rounders with us. I don’t care how we move Gosh, just get rid of him. Gosh is not our future, he had every chance to improve and show he has the brains to learn from his numerous mistakes. As everyone can see, he is a strong armed, grossly inaccurate, horrible touch, confused, rattled, nervous, moody, not football smart and lacks any confidence he may have had in the past. Gosh doesn’t care what people say about him. He has made millions and some team will pay him millions more . Please let it be some other team. Gosh cannot improve his accuracy or decision making. Go Bucs!

  55. PRBucFan Says:

We have to do whatever possible to draft
    Dee Millinar

  56. lurker Says:

cbssports.com mock draft has us picking 12 and taking
    Dee Milliner, CB Alabama
    or
    Xavier Rhodes, CB Florida State

We could go top 10, but then other player will be available.

ps both have chiefs taking Geno Smith first and Manti Te’o 5th to the lions.

  57. CC Says:

3 wins 5 losses at home. Fans are lining up for season tix next year.

  58. CC Says:

This team has more holes to fill than Mons Venus.

  59. Justin Says:

Freeman doesn’t have one more year. There will be another QB here next year ( either a rookie or a FA) and Josh will be on a VERY short leash. He sputters, he’ll get pulled and that will be it.

There are going to be some surprising changes around here this offseason.

And you know what really sucks? I feel the exact same way about this Bucs right now as I did at this point last year. So sick of the late season pack it in squad.

  60. PRBucFan Says:

I wouldn’t say that. CB’s, a welker type slot, maybe a legit TE, and most importantly a QB.

-Banks from Mississippi State is available aswell, only thing is Milliner is hands down superior and ready to step in now. If Dom can trade back into the 1sr round and snag Banks along with Milliner it would be an amazing draft.

  61. Eric Says:

Rather than bust in waiting, looks like we have been awaiting on a bust.

  62. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

Josh Freeman “bust in waiting” the wait is over

  63. CanadianBucsFan Says:

    @JLM

That is an interesting thought. Alex Smith knows how to take care of the football, we get Nicks+Joseph back and D-rex will be in his second year.. We would be a run first offense that can still pass the ball ( oh yeah Smith wont throw 8 picks in 2 games EVER, I can guarantee that ) As a person and teammate, I really do like Freeman. Hes a nice dude and his teammates only ever have good things to say about him, but as a football player.. I dont think hes consistent enough to bring us to the SB, or even the fkn playoffs.. He has one year on his contract, let him play it out. Improve our defense this offseason and with a everyone having a year under sullivans offense, maybe next year will bring great things

  64. Yup Says:

I’ve been looking at your site for a week take “fan” out your name and keep kissing pft a$$ you weirdo , least the billboards pay, drama sells pfft

  65. lurker Says:

2 cb’s in round 1, prbf? wow, that would be a haul with those 2.
i wonder if we can get out from under wright’s contract with his suspension.

  66. Eric Says:

The guy who took a bad risk was Mark Dominik in putting the whole franchise on Free’s shoulders with no back up plan.

And signing a guy from Rutgers as head coach.

We have been wasting our time for four years. The record has been atrocious.

  67. BigMacAttack Says:

Josh is scared, probably home sick, so trade him to the Chiefs for Eric Berry.

  68. Patrick Says:

Watching a rookie Russell Wilson perform like he did tonight against an elite team like the 49ers makes me want a new quarterback even more!

And yes I just watched Freeman’s press conference……i think the guy is slightly retarded.

  69. Architek Says:

I think I’m going to watch my Bucs Championship DVD next Sunday instead watching this abomination.

  70. Have A Nice Day Says:

    Really? Tebow over Freeman? WTh!!!!

  71. Have A Nice Day Says:

Architek – I still watch that regularly. I have a DVD copy as well as the full original SB with all the commercials and the 2 hour pre game!!!!

  72. Have A Nice Day Says:

@Patrick – If everyone new Wilson was gonna turn out so well he would have been the first pick of the draft. The guy has been stellar this year, but judging his total merit based off a division game is weak.

  73. PRBucFan Says:

It would be quite the haul indeed lurker.

  74. Have A Nice Day Says:

Patrick – Freeman should be struggling with his speech considering the amount of hits he has taken recently. 5 sacks and 9 hits in this game alone….

I can’t wait for the next “stingy OL” post.lol

  75. PRBucFan Says:

This patchwork of an oline is aloud one off game this season is say. The announcer seemed to have thought Free was holding on to the ball entirely too long as well.

  76. Have A Nice Day Says:

This patchwork offensive line has struggled quite often. When they played well, Freeman and Martin shined. When they haven’t, Martin and Freeman have had bad games.

The success of this ‘run first – throw deep’ offense hinges on the OL. When the OL is not run or pass blocking effectively, all will fail.

  77. SteveK Says:

    HAND,

Freeman has no more excuses. He is on the trade block.

  78. PRBucFan Says:

You can’t honestly be providing more excuses for Freeman??? Lol unbelievable

  79. lurker Says:

    lol at trading freeman…
i think this team has many weaknesses, not just freeman’s erratic play. tebow is not the answer, nor is usc’s barkley.

the injuries, again, hurt us. this weakened the o-line, despite the joe raving about the patchwork job. also injuries weakened an already questionable cb situation. hopefully they can trade the 4th from talib trade with their second and get back into the first for cb banks or someone else with year 1 impact like doug martin.

  80. PRBucFan Says:

We have all seen him struggle even when he has all the time in the world. Fact

  81. PRBucFan Says:

    Agreed

  82. lurker Says:

you think the bucs are in a bad position, look at the jets. tebow and sanchez were listed as the number 2 qb behind mcelroy. they are trying to get rid of both qb’s.

  83. PRBucFan Says:

Wright would made quite the 3rd CB though. I wonder if we could work something out with him.

  84. PRBucFan Says:

Tebow would be a terrible solution. Not even a solution

  85. Have A Nice Day Says:

@SteveK – Your obscure reply is, at best, bewildering in the context of any of my posts. If you wish to engage me please do so with relevancy. At the very least provide specifics of what you are replying too. Thanks 😉

  86. lurker Says:

if dominick had a clause in wright’s contract, he might have leverage to rework it like he did with trueblood.

  87. Oahubuc Says:

    Freeman’s tackling has even regressed.

  88. PRBucFan Says:

    … Really Obuc??? Lol

  89. lurker Says:

i think he can take a pill for that nowadays, oahubuc

  90. lurker Says:

talib and wright dud, but it didn’t work….lol

  91. SacBucs Says:

These million dollar dummies still aint realized Madden puts out a series of plays straight out of nfl playbooks every year. Just playing the dam game helps you read a defense(ask Brisco). The Madden plays jus have diffrent names but some have similar ones. Josh and Big Mike lost their Homie Brisco so free cant learn defenses from Dez. They sit around in there manson playing the game that can ultimately make them elite. Idiots! Computer semulation is almost like film.

Try it smart guys! Get at me I will show the non-believers!

Who got rid of Dez Brisco huh?
We make him and tuff Preston walk the plank then bring in umpteen other undrafted rookie pratice squad recievers that never touch the field. Beside ikey that one year, Parker was are best third down threat the bucs had in 2010. Forget that know it alls. We brought to many rooks in for Pres to be doing punts. Brisco had a more productive year then Benn in 2010.

Josh for Berry that might be a good trade!

Bruce Allen just didnt like Tampa because he did a fine job in Alanta. Check it out critics!

  92. lurker Says:

dude, you don’t even make sense. your writing is atrocious and incomprehensible and you even mess up the gm’s. also, why would kc trade, much less trade berry?

    doh…

  93. Fan Says:

Sacbucs, that has to be the most incoherent post of all time.

  94. Buc fan south Tampa Says:

I can see Freeman getting traded for draft picks. If you dont believe that he is the best you can get, and if he has value (according to Brian Billick he does) then trade him for draft picks, and move on down the road. There are a number of successful QBs sitting on a bench who want a team (Alex Smith, Matt Flynn), as well as QBs in the 2013 class. I dont know what 5’s issue is, but damn-we are four years in this.

  95. Buc Fan #238 Says:

These comment sections have even regressed.

What is hapening to this world? 🙂

  96. lurker Says:

    idiocracy is happening!

    well, that and religion.

  97. Burl Morgan Says:

For all the Josh haters. I remember watching a quarterback who was terrible his 1st 5 years in the NFL. His name is Terry Bradshaw who by the way has 4, I repeat 4 SuperBowl rings. Josh Is a young talent who can make all the throws, who is working with a new offensive coordinator. I believe Mike Sullivan is a good coach that will help Josh find his way. Josh’s experiences this year will help him in the off season to grow & evolve as a more competent effective quarterback. We need to get behind this young man & show him some support!

  98. PRBucFan Says:

    Same ole tune
