Chucky Will Join Super Bowl Reunion Party

Seat me next to Mark Alstott, Keyshawn, Shaun King, Jurevicius, Lynch, I’ll fight all of them. Just don’t ask me to pick Al Singleton out of a lineup. Monte can sit with those guys.”
Per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Bucs have confirmed that Chucky will take a break from preparing to stroke every player on Monday Night Football telecasts to attend the 10th-anniversary Super Bowl party festivities in Tampa on Sunday, Dec. 9, when the Bucs host the Eagles.

Hell yeah!!!! Last time I checked he’s the ONLY Tampa Bay Buccaneer head coach with a super bowl ring… he’s more than welcome in my book!

I just hate the argument though that he inherited/won with Dungy’s team. It drives me crazy. If that was indeed the case then why didn’t Dungy win the superbowl with Dungy’s team? Does anyone not remember those 2 or 3 years in a row where we’d ge our asses handed to us in Philly with ZERO offense to speak of? Does anyone not remember his stubbornes regarding offensive coordinators? Those oh-so awesome Mike Shula ad Les steckel years. Woo..
Also, Gruden brought in what 20 free agents or so when he came in? On the offensive side of the ball, it was largely a new team. He was able to take us to Philly and kick their ass. THAT is the difference. He took the Bucs over the top. Whether or not he was a great coach is debatable, but he was the right guy, at the right time, and he deserves all the credit in the world for that.

I wouldn’t be so quick to sign Gruden up as Philly’s coach. The guy is an awesome analyst, he was born to be behind the camera. Just don’t put it past him to stay put where he’s at.

He didn’t win with Dungy’s team. The keys to that dominating defense were already in place before Dungy arrived. Lynch, Sapp, and Brooks were all drafted by Sam Wyche. Chucky won with Sam Wyche’s players.

Sorry Joe, my memory isn’t so great anymore. My mistake for ever thinking the Great & Powerful Oz could ever make a mistake. I won’t let it happen again. I never missed a game in 02′ but I never watched a press conference either, or read a blog or watched sports news. I am evolving but not much.
Well it isn’t the first time I’ve looked like an idiot and surely not the last.

More than welcome is right. I had a lo of issues with how Gruden went through QBs and how he treated players on the way out… BUT… he brought a SB Trophy to Tampa.
He can come back anytime.
(I am still waiting for someone to point to an example of how he was an “offensive genius” though)

Chucky defenders need to look at the silver platter he was handed. The defense was the heart and soul of the super winning team. The d-bag dismantled it because his big f**kin couldn’t handle the comments about winning with Dungy’s team. That group should have at least one more super bowl.

So tired of the Dungy vs Gruden stuff. Fact is Sam Wyche, Dungy and Gruden were all very important. People always forget how many players Gruden brought in because we flat out sucked on offense. We also played Grudens old team in the Superbowl. Seems like the perfect storm happened that year and I’m very happy and grateful for it.

I liked the Ol Evil Stare… couldnt make his mind up when it came to QBs tho…but the mismatches he could create on offense was mind boggling to DCs.. he won us a trophy yes and for that, Im Gruden biased.
As far as Gruden vs Dungy team, it was Grudens team that season but wit that line of thought, Chucky himself had TWO teams in the Big Game…so to speak. Like him or not…it is what it is

We would have wasted a few years…same as we did. But we also would not have a “good” young team by now. And no Freeman. Considering the quality of veteran QBs available since he got fired, other than Manning, we would be up the creek without a paddle.
I felt at the time that he deserved at least another year though. He’d finally put together back-to-back winning seasons.
One thing is certain…Gruden was hated in the community, outside of a few diehard fans. The Bucs had to fire him because of the public opinion.
Although some of us sort of liked him, most of the population hated him. That’s what drove the final decision to fire him.

Tampa2 you are so right on, If not for Gruden we would not have a Super bowl to speak of and thank you for that GRUDEN.You can also look at it as Gruden had to teams in the same year go to the super bowl,the Raiders would not of been who they are without Gruden and the Raiders would of won the super bowl if Gruden stayed their.The year before Gruden would of also took the Raiders to the super bowl if not for the stupid tuck rule.

Count me in the non-Gruden Fan club.
If there was a team in the ’02 SB that Gruden was responsible for being there, they were wearing Silver and Black.
I think Gruden got so caught up in his own image that he screwed himself. The constant revolving door of has-been QBs, the lack of offensive production, his abhorrence of Mike Alsott (just give the man the effing ball) and his dismantling of the D all led to his demise.
Whey you have that kind of personality, it is great when things are going well, but gets real old, real quick when things take a turn for the worse.

By “sent out” I am going to assume you mean in the military…and if that’s the case you deserve instant respect. That would explain the gung ho attitude as well 😉

I wouldn’t say he immediately dismantled it. Keyshawn deserved to be kicked to the curb.
And the reason he has not coached a team since is because he was given one of the biggest honors he could get…he replaced the great John Madden. If he coaches he loses that.
Gruden had a coaching style I didn’t much care for (except in the first year), but he did get some results. I think Dungy and Monte deserved some credit for the defense, but Gruden came in and built the offense enough to win the superbowl.
There was a reason Dungy failed to do it here…and when he was hired to the Colts, Dungy was told NOT to tamper with the offense. So really, if Gruden did it with Dungy’s team, Dungy did it with the Colt’s offensive coordinators team.

You guys with the “He dismantled the team” schtick, crack me up! It wouldn’t have matter who was headcoach. In todays NFL, teams only have certain amount of time or windows of opportunities, lets say, to win a Super Bowl. With that said, it was salary cap hell and free agency runaways that dismantled the team. Also, add to that the fact of the (2) 1st round and (2) 2nd picks we gave up for Gruden.
Let me ask this question to Gruden haters, would Marvin Lewis or Steve Mariucci taken us to the pormised land? HELL NO!

Bottom line is….if we fix this miserable secondary we have this is the best Tampa team to ever hit the field for years to come. Should have at least one more Super Bowl in the books before this team dismantles. The past is the past. I’m looking forward to the future.

I agree this team has the makings of the best Buc team ever. I think one more Draft and a FA or two, could put them over the top or least in the top echelon of teams. We need help at CB but I think these young guys are improving each week.

The reason he has not coached another team since is that the Bucs paid him not to coach. He has been very successful as a commentator on MNF. He has expanded his empire with the college QB show. These are very family friendly endeavors and he had a young family.
I would like to give Jon Gruden sincere thanks for bringing a Super Bowl victory and respectability to the Tampa Bay area. Jon won’t have to pay for a drink anywhere in West Florida this week.
