“Let’s Blitz The Heck Out Of Them”

October 9th, 2012

At times the Bucs have looked positively blitz-happy this season. Joe’s still trying to get the Giants-Bucs game out of his head.

But blitzes have their value, and former Bucs tight end Dave Moore sees Sunday’s game against the Chiefs as a sensible time for the Bucs to dial up all kinds of pressure.

“The question is, ‘Are the Bucs going to get in that man-to-man [defense] or are they going to play a little softer?” Moore said, speaking on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday. “I would imagine the Bucs to come after them like crazy, to blitz a ton, be in that man-to-man on the outside and force whatever quarterback’s going to be in there to beat them. That would make the most logical sense. You know, if it’s Cassel, he’s not playing very well. Let’s blitz the heck out of him. Try to get some turnovers. And with Brady Quinn, same kind of thing. He hasn’t been in there that much. Put a lot of pressure on him.”

Moore went on to say the Bucs must stop the run for these blitzes to have maximum effect. Blitzing on 3rd-and-2 will not be as effective.

Frankly, Joe’s not greatly concerned about the Bucs defense Sunday. It’s the offense that needs to find consistency in all phases. The Bucs need to get a lead against the Chiefs to drive them out of their mauling running game in the fourth quarter.

Is this team going to throw the ball more than 10 or 12 times this game? Two other teams that have given us fits with the running game in the past; the Ravens & Jaguars. The last time we played the Jag’s they used a two TE set and brought in an extra offensive lineman along with a FB. It was too much for our undersized lineman & linebackers. They basically ran at will! I hope the game plan is ready for a bunch of 300lbs guys running down hill with one of the fastest players in the league behind them.

How about we scout our own team’s tendencies and formulate a game plan that doesn’t repeat the same thing over and over ad nauseum.

How about making key adjustments at halftime instead of just repeating the 1st half. When you demonstrate your game plan in the 1st half, do you really think there is any team in the NFL that can’t shut you completely down when you mail in the 2nd half?

How about going into a slugfest with our slugger in the backfield. Do you think the Chiefs would use Dexter McCluster between the tackles 20 times a game and give Jamaal Charles 3 carries?

How about planning to score 35 points instead of 10?

How about rescinding the disciplinary rules and fines, how do you expect Aqib Talib to concentrate on rotating coverage when he’s stewing about $400 in 1st half fines for hands on hips and untied shoelaces? How can we expect our head coach to coach when he’s too busy being a hall monitor collecting fines in his little notebook?

Folks, this is NOT professional football, this the NEW SCHIANO ORDER!

Not so much forcing the other teams’s QB to beat us but actively inviting it. Good strategy, Moore.

WE HAVE TO WIN THIS GAME OR THE SEASON IS OVER

Last time I checked we’re averaging 20.5 points a game. So your 10 point comment is wrong! Go back to your nap!

  6. Have A Nice Day Says:

@76buc76 – I might be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure there are actually 16 games this season. This being our 5th, we should have 11 more to go after this Sunday. Again, I could be wrong, but I’m almost positive there are 16 games per team per regular season.

The Falcons are the only good team in our division right now and I truly believe they’re fool’s gold, ala Jeff Garcia. Win a ton of games then flop in the playoffs. This season is not over for us by a longshot. Still though, if we can’t beat these scrubs we need some serious soul searching.

How long has it been since Quinn threw a regular-season pass?? Anybody know?

    Going on 3 days now.

I’m with HAND on this one, not sure I would blitz all day on KC. I would think it would be better to play coverage and make their QB’s make the throws. I guess the exception would be if the film shows Cassell or Quinn struggle with the blitz. Regardless, I wouldn’t blitz them all day, because that would invite the big play. I would make them prove that they could sustain long drives without making a mistake. So far this year, they have yet to prove that. Then again, we seem to be the perfect team for struggling teams to play against.

  11. Rican Says:

We have failed to prove we can blitz all day without shooting ourselves in the foots. I never want to see that kind of play again from our defense.

  12. Rican Says:

We have yet to prove we can “blitz all day” without shooting ourselves in the foot. On the contrary we have actually proved we can’t. As a fan I never want to see that horrific, stubborn kind of play again.
