Special Teams Failed Bucs Miserably

September 23rd, 2012

There’s so much Buccaneer blame to go around today, it’s amazing the Bucs only lost by six points.

And a lot of that blame falls on the special teams. The man rockstar general manager Mark Dominik called a Pro Bowl caliber special teams ace this week, Dekoda Watson, really choked away points for the Bucs.

Dallas was punting with the game tied 7-7 midway through the second quarter from their own 21 yard line. Watson was unblocked on the punt rush and over ran the punter, missed an easy block and plowed into the punter for a 15-yard penalty.

To make matters worse, Jordan Shipley fumbled away that punt and Dallas tacked on Watson’s 15 yard penatly to their recovery. Then they drove down for a field goal to lead 10-7.

If Watson blocks that kick, it’s a six-point, or maybe 10-point swing. Unbelievable!

And this special teams mess ends with D.J. Ware completely hitting the wrong gap on Dez Bryant’s late 44-yard punt return in the fourth quarter. That’s not pretty film.

The New Schiano Order’s Buccaneer Men were not on the details today.

SPECIAL TEAMS??? really?? how bout the 39 yards freeman had in the 4th quarter.

Might want to pick a new screen name. Also might want to scroll down to see what else Joe has written about Freeman today. –Joe.

This is not 10 years ago when you can rely on defense. Offense is atrocious, period and its so aggravating

  3. joe Says:

my fault joe i didnt realize the screen name, I just typed in my first name. Sorry bout that Im just a frustrated fan like everyone today I gather.

  4. SensibleBuc Says:

It was nice knowing you Jordan Shipley.

  5. Orlandobucsfan Says:

    @joe
How can in the same post you call him rockstar general manager and say the player he rates as a probowler caused the bucs a potential 10 point swing.
You know at least your consistent with the rockstar. All I want to know is at what point did you start calling the him rockstar. What moves did he make that you thought damn he is a rockstar, and I will refere to him as one from now on.

  6. Mike J Says:

I watched that & thought, ”How did Dekoda miss that??” Obvious answer is, he had his eyes closed, NK.

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

Trying to stay positive but can’t find much good to say. Defense played well for being on the field 90% of the game. Freeman & Sullivan need to get it together.

Shipley, Clark and Lewis should all be cut or on thin ice.

  8. Kennedy Says:

Terrible play by Watson. You can’t lose your bearings like that. Bad high school move. Pro Bowler my ass.

  9. SensibleBuc Says:

    @Orlando

The “rockstar” moniker is more of a observation on Dom’s personality than an evaluation of his personnel moves.

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

I can’t fault Dakota because the effort was great. He just missed it but I like the way he hustles. The Bucs have problems dropping passes bad. No Freeman has a bad day but playmakers have to make plays and today they didn’t.

  11. Orlandobucsfan Says:

    @sensiblebuc
I hope so because I don’t know of any of his moves pre schiano that I would agree with minus clayborne and now McCoy but still needs to stay healthy, the list of bad draft picks is going to have one more added freeman may be saying hello to all other failed Dominic draft picks.

  12. Patrick Says:

Sure…….they failed. But the fact that our quarterback only 39 yards going into the 4th and couldn’t even pick up more than 2 first down’s is the reason we lost!

  13. Brad Says:

I think the fail falls on coaching staff. The two turnovers were by guys that didn’t compete in our training camp until late if at all. Why have these two playing in key positions when others should have had those chances. I’m sick of Martin running too. He clearly didn’t have the hot hand today so why wasn’t Blount used more? I’m over the Blount thing. If we’re not going to use a guy that could turn a game then cut him so he has a chance somewhere else.

  14. Justin Says:

Blocked punt would have been huge. We still would have lost though with that offense. Watching them was like going to the dentist.

I was hoping I could come here and receive some sort of condolence after this pitiful Bucs performance. Hoping Joe would find something positive in what has to be one of the worst offensive performances ever displayed in football. Yet I am greeted with an article regarding Special Teams? Really? Our defense all but spoon fed us the game and special teams is somehow a culprit for this disaster of a football game. Was it really football though? Third and 10 lets run a draw. First and 10 lets run play action? Greg Olsen where are you bud? We need you. If not for the Garbage drive at the end of the game…we would have finished with less than 100 yards of total offense.

I am in awe after today’s offensive “attempt” and cant say I have felt like this in quite some time. Could it be sheer disappointment? Absolutely. I expect so much more considering the talent we have at our disposal. The catch by Vincent Jackson on 4th down? Are you kidding me. Get this dude the ball.

After 3 weeks, if not for our play-making, gritty defensive play, these games would not have even been close. Not even a chance. We cant even attempt a field goal when we are gifted a fumble (from our defense) that starts us on the 30 yard line of the opposing team.

Stepping of my soapbox…this rant has been made official.

  16. raphael Says:

pretty sure it was Freemans fault…..DOH !

  17. J-VilleBuc Says:

Jordan Shipley I agree. You are gone!! We really don’t need to knock on the special teams though. The offensive plays that were called sucked. When your in field goal range don’t kick yourself in the ass by getting penalties. Two times in field goal range then boom false start, holding, 1st in 20 now just out of field goal range and then you throw it all 3 times. Mike that’s when you need to stick with the run is in those times. Why not get back some of the yardage to get back in range. 1st and 20 is when you do a draw, not 3rd and 9.

  18. Mike Says:

That was a bad game by Freeman, can’t put it all on him but you have to make some plays! Where is 2010 Josh Freeman?

  19. stimpy Says:

Joe? Seriously? Special teams? You fail.

  20. Colorado Buc Says:

I think Shipley and Myron Lewis can take their pink slips to the head of the unemployment line!

  21. Have A Nice Day Says:

lmao at crapping on Watson. He was inches away from a game breaking play but since he didn’t make it, we are supposed to dump on him…. Count me out.

  22. john Says:

The rookie from utah needs to be runing kick offs back

  23. Paul Says:

Quincey Black got penalized for no talent. I’ve never seen that before. Got there on time, just no talent to make the play.
