McCoy Clarifies Sapp’s Coaching

Gerald McCoy told reporters this week how Warren Sapp called him after Sunday’s game to threaten to kick his ass if he ever let Cam Newton or other quarterbacks out of his grasp again, like McCoy did a few times in the home-opener.
That was cute to hear, but speaking on Total Access on WDAE-AM 620 last night McCoy went much deeper into his conversation with Sapp and explained that Sapp legitimately is serving as his personal position coach.
“He’s so helpful, man. I don’t think people realize how helpful he is,” McCoy said of Sapp. “He literally took every play and broke it down and told me what I can do to better myself. And he didn’t go off, you know, ‘Well you need to change this. You need to change that.’ He’s so good at what he does, he took what I’m capable of and said, ‘this is what you’re able to do; this is what you should do with how you play.’ It’s a blessing, man. And I can’t thank him enough.”
There was a deep, grateful tone in McCoy’s voice, and McCoy went out of his way to make it clear that Sapp calls him on many occasions and Sapp is proactive as a coach, not just answering McCoy’s questions. McCoy also said Sapp calls him “young fella” and is working on making him nasty.
McCoy’s got a real edge having a personal coach like Sapp in his corner. Now all he has to do is stay healthy. Man, Joe wishes he could be a fly on the wall when Sapp finally gets to sit down and talk football with the leader of the New Schiano Order.

Why not just hire Saap and bring him in to 1 Buc as an assistant?

I’m with you CC, that would be a HUGE enabler, I just don’t see it ever happening, but if it were possible, I wouldn’t stop with Sapp, I’d bring in Mr. Derrick Brooks to also help out with the LB’s, and maybe John Lynch to help out with the DB’s, while we’re at it, maybe have Warrick Dunn talk to Doug Martin to emphasize longevity, and then for the WR’s, we’d get Keyshaw…….uhm, nevermind with the wideouts, I’m sure PJ Fleck would suffice.
It’s all an entertaining thought, but I think having Sapp teach GMC a little “Dog” & “Nastiness” is all good, but lets see how he grades out against the G-men.

I don’t think that great players always make great coaches. The reason why I think that Sapp is so good for McCoy is because of the attitude that Sapp brings, which sometimes seems to be a part of the game that McCoy hasn’t gotten down yet: the killer instinct.

Great to see Sapp’s interest in helping develop GMC.
Also, great to see McCoy receptive to Sapp’s info.

Warrick Dunn is officially attached to the Falcons as part owner. No way does he come here for anything other than a celebration…and besides that…he wasn’t THAT good of a running back.
Lynch is smart enough to coach, but I think his future is in tv or maybe a movie at some point.
Brooks would be great, but he’s attached to the Storm and his MANY other projects. We’re lucky he has any time at all.
Sapp would be awesome to watch along the sidelines

hopefully warren sapp can learn how to be a decent human being from gerald mccoy. that would be a great symbiotic relationship.

Hate Sapp as a person if you must, but his nasty personality made him the stud DT he was.
Hopefully he can grow as a person and GMC can grow as an angry individual between the whistles.

Warrick Dunn wasn’t THAT good of a RB? He’s only the greatest RB in FSU history, multiple pro bowls and one of the top 3 Buc RB’s of all time with Wilder and Bell. (Alstott was a FB)
Not to mention probably one of the greatest people you could ever have the pleasure to meet

I gotta agree with Ian. Dunn was amazing most of the time. Him and Alstott was the best 1, 2 punch we’ve ever had.

Don’t see Sapp ever being an NFL coach. It would be a huge risk for any team to hire him, due to his mouth and history of problems off the field. Serving in this role as a mentor is perfect for him, and I’m sure the Bucs agree.

The relative silence from all the McCoy haters is very telling. Nobody with an ounce of football knowledge could be critical of the performance he put in. Sapp gets a pass of course!
