As Aqib Talib said after yesterday’s game, “This ain’t last year.” No, it’s a New Schiano Order. Punishing running game and swarming defense.
This was on display yesterday in Schiano’s debut as an NFL head coach when the Bucs held the Panthers to a mere 10 yards rushing and Muscle Hamster ran for 95 bruising yards.
For this, Delta-scolding, Marriott-sleeping, scone-loathing Peter King of Sports Illustrated annointed Schiano as “Coach of the Week.”
Coach of the Week
Greg Schiano, head coach, Tampa Bay.The Bucs were last in the NFL in points allowed last year, and last against the run. In two games against the Panthers last year, they gave up 86 points. But they’ve bought into Schiano early, and held Carolina to 10 yards rushing and 10 points at the Pirate Ship. One game’s too early to say the rah-rah stuff is going to work in the NFL, but discipline is discipline, and organization is organization. And Kellen Winslow and Brian Price, casualties under Schiano, haven’t landed anywhere, have they?
No, Winslow was more interested in spinning discs poolside in Las Vegas than he was in working to become a winner. And let’s not forget about Bongs Jackson who was/is more interested in the hippie lettuce (allegedly) than becoming a winner.
The Bucs may not make the playoffs this year. Yes, that’s a stretch. But Schiano has certainly shaken this franchise from a lazy slumber.

Who would have guessed the Bucs would have won the game on defense? If the Bucs keep playing like they did yesterday, they can easily make the playoffs.

not getting ahead of myself but i thought right from the get go they looked crisp and organized. Two plays reminded me of better times. The interception by barber where one db hit the rec and another came in to clean him up while barber committed the robbery and barron blasting smith on the sideline to make sure he did not gain another yard. Did not see much if any of those things last year. buc ball!

I guess I’m stretching…because I believe they WILL make the playoffs.
However, I also think there is a strong chance we will lose the next two games, which will result in the next home game being blacked out…and we’ll win it.

I am more intrested to see what the team looks like in week 4 and 6, by then other team will have film on some of our tendencies. We ran alot of blitzes that no one has seen. Team will start to adjust to what we are doing.

Coach of the week? Peter King obviously didn’t watch the game. Carolina clearly out coached the Bucs in the 2nd half. Twice the announcers commented on how the Carolina coaches had made some nice adjustments at half time. Martz went as far as to say, “I’m not so sure part of Tampa Bay’s offense didn’t stay in the locker room at halftime.”
Tampa Bay’s obsession for secrecy paid off with an opening drive for seven points Then they added a couple field goals aided by a ball hawking defense. Now, time to sit on that lead.
The Little General was evidently pleased going into the half with a thirteen point lead, because he mailed in the 2nd half. Thank God for Aqib Talib and Connor Barth.
While the Carolina Kittens crunched the numbers and made adjustments, Schiano took a leak, ate a couple hot dogs and had an icy cold drink. Surprise, the half was even extended due to lightning and the Kittens brainstormed even more. They came out quickly scored and shut the Buc offense down completely.
The Buc coordinators are going to have to make adjustments on their own at the half even if it means keeping Schiano out of the loop. Shades of Raheem!
A couple observations, in the 2nd quarter Mike Williams on a 3rd and six made an 8 yard reception for a 1st down. Why did the Little General accept a pass interference penalty on that play that negated Freeman and William’s nice play for a 1st down? That’s not so good for team morale.
In the 2nd quarter, Schiano tossed a red flag on a obvious Carolina reception right in front of the home bench, this probably stopped him from challenging a 4th quarter reception on the opposite side of the field. Remember, Raheem first gave us a glimpse of his incompetency with his bizarre use of red flags.
The Little General appeared to be a Hall Monitor, writing down uniform numbers for all the useless and ridiculous rules violations he saw. He was actually caught red handed on camera admonishing Donald Penn, “Yeah, #70 saw you with my own two eyes, hands on hips rule violation. That’s gonna cost you.”
Grande would like to think that he was making some pertinent notes for when they confabbed at halftime, but no, halftime is for other more important things. Miguel hopes he’s wrong about the note taking, he could actually assign some intern assistant quality control person to study film and fine all of those miscreants but Grande fears the worse.
They didn’t win a beauty pageant yesterday, but there were some great things accomplished.
Coach of the week or the weakest link???
Grande once knew a coach, who would stoically Tebow on one knee observing the final innings of a ball game. Miguel thought, what a leader, what a deep thinker and what a coach? Once, Grande asked him what was going through his mind at those moments? His answer, “Hot Dogs!! I’m wondering if the concession stand has any left over hot dogs. I get them for free!”
Every game after when Miguel saw him stoically kneeling, Grande noticed those furtive glances towards the concession stand and how he would make a bee line towards the hot dogs before even addressing his team.
He looked like a field general but he was a poser.
Somehow, Schiano reminds me of that James Cagney character in that classic film, Mr Roberts. Even looks like him.

Schiano was ask about what he writes down and he said he likes to tracks all the plays and notes about the outcome, not players. As I’m sure you are well aware Coach has already clarified his half time comment. Major half time adjustments are outdated coaches make adjustments after every series on the fly during the game. I would doubt very seriously that Schiano would miss any opportunity to point out issues like lack of attention to detail, effort, ball security, penalties at the half or any other time when it’s necessary to do so.

That’s a stupid post, even for Miguel. You want to know why the Panthers had to make halftime adjustments? Because they were getting the sh!t kicked out of them. We did something no team did to Cam last year, keep him from running the ball effectively. We were sound on defense, and efficient on offense. Why chuck the ball all over the field when the Panthers can’t score on us?
So they scored because of their secrecy? Ha ha ha ha ha! What a load of crap! You are such a joke.
If you read anything about this team, you would know that these guys don’t care about individual stats. Accepting the penalty or not accepting the penalty does nothing to team morale, unless you have a bunch of selfish, me-first players. Mike Williams is not one of those guys. What a dumb arse statement on your part.
As for the challenges, learn the rules. You get 2 challenges per half, and an extra one if you get them both right. So no, it didn’t cost him the ability to challenge a completion in the fourth.
As for writing down notes, a lot of coaches do that. In fact, most do nowadays. Bellicheat has been doing it for his whole career. They write down observations, so they can let the coordinators and other coaches know during a stoppage. I guess you prefer the Raheem Morris style of coaching?

Will Muschamp and the Gators were getting their asses kicked during Saturday’s first half. They made classic half time adjustments which shut down the Aggies and produced a great conference road win. If not for Talib’s 1st ever punt block, we would be crying the Carolina blues today.
Bucs came out on their first drive and scored. Afterwards, no TDs. Out coached.
Players and their agents are paid by stats, nothing selfish about that. It’s stupidity or callousness on Schiano’s part. When GMC tries to negotiate his next contract, they will show him the statistics, and cut his pay by 80%.
Check your rule book, I believe you’re wrong, nobody has ever gotten 5 challenges per game. When he misused the first, it limited his options. The announcers and the scabs were scratching their heads on that one. Not just me.

I believe they film the games for future analysis. When he noted things in a tiny pocket notebook, they were brief momentary marks like #70 in the Hands on Hips column.

First of all, even without that blocked punt, we win the game. See buddy, we were up 13-0 at halftime. The Panthers only scored 10 points. 13 is greater than 10. Regardless, why don’t you check the standings. I’m pretty sure we are 1-0.
So you judge being outcoached by what happens after the first score? Or do you judge it by halftime adjustments? You know what I do? I judge it by the final score. But then again, what do I know. But it’s great that you think Muschamp is a great college coach. Let’s just hope they don’t have to play Arkansas State right? That would be the best vs. the best.
You can listen to Stanglassman, I listened to the interview after the game. That is what Schiano says he does. And guess what? Not all coaches wear headsets. Shocking, I know. Besides, you don’t want to bother an OC when he is in the middle of his play calling zone. Guess you never learned that running marathons up mountains, while curing cancer eating hemp.
I corrected myself about the challenges. I was typing faster than I was thinking. Read the next post. Regardless, he still had a challenge remaining. Yes it was a bad challenge, but often times they get word from upstairs on whether or not to challenge.

I was there and things were moving quickly. Right or wrong, I would have challenged it too.
It amazes me that we lose Thomas and end up with a flake like Miguel. You can’t argue with some people because they don’t have the intellectual ability to understand logic and reasoning. Their brains don’t work that way. They are stuck in their own little dreamworld where their neurons sizzled and disconnected, forming endless groups of circles and ellipses starving for LSD to free them from eternal emptiness.

Interesting point, but with out the blocked punt and Barth field goal, the Kittens go for the touchdown and extra point. Carolina 14-13 or TB 13-7 with the Bucs buried deep in their own territory with plenty of time left.
The only reason they went for the field goal was because of our heroes, Talib and Barth. They needed two scores.

The defense looked great except GMC must have had tired leg syndrome. I distinctly remember Simeon Rice and QBKilla running QBs down from behind. Dini couldn’t catch squat.

The defense looked great except from GMC? The game I saw GMC was the best player on the field on either team. He may not have had multiple sacks, but he lived in their backfield and was the main reason Cam was out of sync.

please don’t debate with conjectue. you are guessing on doug martin. you cannot presume to say that martin was caught from behind was because of conditioning drill. your earlier guess that martin “wouldn’t do much until after the bye” was incorrect. in fact, in the fourth quarter he helped to run out the clock. his first down run sealed the win.
and how do you not give gerald mccoy and greg schiano credit, if not respect? that is why people call you names because it is beyond comprehension that a person of intelligence would make some of the comments that you do. if you are indeed a “fan” why not embrace the team, coach, and players?
