The leader of the New Schiano Order took to the podium today at One Buc Palace and offered and opinion on Josh Freeman running the football.
Schiano is all for Freeman using his legs as a weapon,but he wants to see Freeman master the slide and stay safe.
The head coach was no fan of a first-down run Freeman had against the Panthers. “A little too much spinnin’ and jukin’,” Schiano said.
Freeman gained the second-most yardage among NFL quarterbacks in 2010. He can run effectively.
Joe doesn’t want to see Freeman get hurt, either, but Joe’s fine with Freeman’s decision-making on the run. With the Giants sporting their beastly defensive line, “freaks of nature” as Donald Penn referenced them to The Tampa Tribune the week, Freeman’s likely going to be running for his life on Sunday.

The Giants front 4 may be Freaks of Nature, but their back 7 pretty much sucks. Control the lines, don’t turn the ball over and make timely plays and the Bucs can absolutely win this game.

Injuries are going to happen regardless of whether you “spin or juke”. I am fine with all that as long as he protects the football!! You cant play scared period. Let Josh be Josh as long as he holds onto that dam ball. GO BUCS!!

Hey joe this is kind of a random question but im going to the bucs vs cheifs game in oct with my girlfriend im flying in from alabama and want to know of any cool tailgate partys outside of the stadium, just looking for a few adult bevrages and some good food. Any suggestions im a die hard buc fan since 94 and just want to be around some fellow buc fans

You can’t play scared…but you can play smart. The moment Freeman goes down (and I’m not wishing this on him at all!), this town would panic…and blame Schiano for letting him spin and juke.
Play smart. It’s what we wanted Josh to do all last year.

I thought that was a brilliant spin, avoiding contact and getting the first down.

I agree with your statement. The only issue, though, is I believe on the play in question, the reason Free had to “spin and juke” was so that he could pick up the first down. I believe it was 3rd down and I remember watching that play hoping that Free would pick up the 1st. Right before he was going to get hit, I thought, “DAMN!!, not going to pick up the first if he slides.”
Part of the reason he was so great in 2010 was because of his knack for pulling the ball down and running rather than forcing the throw (like he did far too many times last year).
Although I would prefer that he slide when possible, I have no issues with Free taking a small hit trying to pick up a first down. Lets not forget, he’s bigger than almost all DBs and about the same size as most LBs.

If memory serves me, in Josh’s first professional start, he took a slide before acquiring the yardage required for a first down. That was the biggest criticism of him. I’m glad he learned something positive from his experiences after these 4 years.
Here comes the Little General in his first professional game as head coach criticizing the wily veteran for a great play. Maybe next, he will criticize Ronde for stealing the tipped pass from Aqib Talib or stealing that sack from Dini?

I agree for the most part a lot of people would blame Schiano for allowing Josh to do that. However, it would only be the unknowledgeable fans who bitch about everything who would do that (which i would careless about). I rather Josh play hard and smart and try to pick up a first down by any means necessary rather than just playing “safe and smart”. Safe and smart got us 16 points last week and despite how good our defense was, 16 points wont get us very many wins through out the season and we were lucky to get away with a win last week. This week I promise we will need alot more than 16 points to pick up another W.

If he is going to slide, he needs to learn how to. Thought he was going to tear both ACL’s the way he basically dropped to his knee’s and got nailed by a Carolina defender. Was a little slow getting up & the replay looked like he had a REAL good chance of being injured just doing a basic slide.

Yeah save the spinning and juking for Fats Waller and luis armstrong no runing like Liberace either altho the ardo might be sort of Elton john esque just throw the ball and go through your progressions the Kid Martin is a monster out of the backfield hit him anywhere from the line of scrimmage on he’s good for five yards or better the big plays will come if your able to convert on the small ones first keep the d honest

Memory serves you wrong Miguel. His running ability, or sliding ability, has NEVER been his biggest concern.
Most coaches don’t want their QB to take clean hits. Most, if not all, would prefer them to slide and not take a clean shot versus taking a clean shot and picking up the first down. As fans, we just want them to get the first down, but long-term it’s probably not a good idea. If we were to lose Freeman, we are in BIG trouble. I’m for anything that keeps Orlovsky off the field.

The average career in the NFL is 3.5 years, 4th year guys are referred to as veterans. After all he qualifies for his retirement pension this year.
After his 1st game of sliding before the 1st down was accomplished, he corrected himself.
He now throws the ball out of bounds past the line of scrimmage instead of running out bounds for a loss and a sack.
He’s made many small corrections over time, they add up, thus the term wily.
