Bucs Keep Seven Cornerbacks Not Named Barber
August 31st, 2012Yes, Myron Lewis remains a Buccaneer after tonight’s latest round of cuts to get the roster to 53 players.
Joe’s not sure how that happened, but it illustrates the uncertainty the Bucs have at cornerback. They kept seven on the roster.
Leonard Johnson
Anthony Gaitor
Brandon McDonald
Myron Lewis
Aqib Talib
E.J. Biggers
Eric Wright
Greg Schiano was the Bears secondary coach, and clearly he wants a live and large stable of bodies, especially with an injury to Biggers, and Talib already having tweaked a hamstring in training camp. And add Gaitor’s hamstring into the mix, and Wright did miss a little time this spring and summer.
Joe’s feeling great for Johnson, the Largo High rookie who made the team through undrafted free agency.

Get rid of Lewis he is absolute garbage…. He gets burned by everyone including the 3rd string WR of Washington… cutting Underwood to keep “Forever Injured” Lewis is just crazy IMO

I’m glad Myron is still on the team, I don’t understand the hate people have on him. He was bringing it together during traning camp and just needs to get it together during the game and he’s only a step or two from the ball give him time to bring it together…also happy. Leonard made it hope he sticks

Myron Lewis makes the team and Keith Tandy doesn’t.. I’m lost for words honestly, it makes 0 sense to me. Why would you keep Lewis, who was drafted a couple years ago (major waste of a 3rd pick) but has done NOTHING for us. he is ALWAYS injured, and the recievers he covers are ALWAYS open. We kept ******* Lewis over Tandy, who has alot more promise as a player then Lewis and he can play cornerback and saftey, two positons that we do not have great depth in.. Lewis does not deserve to be on this team, BS. If our starters can stay healthy this season I wont be worried about the CB position, Talib and Wright is a solid pair of starting cornerbacks, add the 3rd CB who I think will be Gaitor will get alot of playing time, I think Gaitor will be much improved from last season + happy to see L.Johnson to make the team!

Don’t expect all of them to be here opening day. We still have to see some new guys signed and more releases.

My first impression was that they were keeping so many DBs because they’re still not sure if Goodell may suspend Talib & Wright, though charges were dropped. Then again, if he were planning to suspend them, wouldn’t we have heard something by now?

Unless I missed it one of these comments, I can’t believe that nobody has mentioned Tanard Jackson’s latest and greatest suspension… That was a cut that I think we can all agree was a wise one.

Go Largo Packers! Underwood should have been a keeper. That is going to bite us later!

I suspect Schiano plans to use his three-two-six dime package a lot this season, thus the need for plenty of DB depth. That’s the package that created the Barber tip and Barron INT against the Pats. Rush three DL, drop two LB to cover the short stuff and have six DB’s back there clogging up the route tree. Two deep safeties each responsible for half the field makes it a cover two dime package. NY, Pittsburgh and Baltimore use this package quite a bit too.

I’m surprised, though, that we kept five safeties and seven cornerbacks. That’s half our defense composed of defensive backs. Even running a dime package frequently that’s still a large ratio made up of only two positions. Wondering if they drop a safety or corner to make room for a waiver pickup or free agent.

Shocked to see Johnson make it.
