A Deeper Look Into Greg Schiano
May 4th, 2012As Joe waits for Bucs rookie minicamp to kickoff, Joe just read this nice look back at Greg Schiano from Pete Schrager of FOXSports.com. Schrager explains that the Erik LeGrand story is just a symbol of how Schiano rolls.
Schiano also helped another former player for years following a debilitating car accident that cut his college career short.
Rashawn “Rocky” Ricks was the lone survivor of the accident.
He was told he’d never play football again. His doctors said there was a chance he’d never walk again.
Greg Schiano, the man who recruited Ricks to play at Rutgers less than 12 months earlier, didn’t once question what to do with Ricks’ place in the Scarlet Knights locker room. He knew Rashawn Ricks would never play football again. He knew he’d never let that break Ricks’ spirit.
Rashawn Ricks not only walked again, but he walked right into Greg Schiano’s office less than a year later and told his former coach that he couldn’t let football go. He’d never make another tackle, but he just couldn’t give up the game because of an injury. Schiano wouldn’t let him, anyway.
Ricks kept his full athletic scholarship and was brought on to the Rutgers coaching staff in a managerial role. He worked with the younger linebackers and defensive ends, shagged balls, lugged equipment, and graduated with a degree in four years at Rutgers.
“Without their strength, without the strength of these coaches, I don’t think I’d have made it,” Ricks would later tell the New York Times. “I can’t find the words to explain the state I was in.”
Joe never finds himself thinking the Bucs missed out on Chip Kelly.

I find that I like Schiano more and more every day. I think he is the perfect match for the team and the community. He is loyal to his guys and that should send a strong message through the locker room.

If that is the type of leadership we’re going to see then I can see good things happening here.

AND the rest of the NFL Scott.

Love the feel good stories, hopefully this translates to the football field as well. I know it will take time, but i really like Schiano, just seems like a good football guy, and a good man too.

Solid coach and person…who won’t get out-physicaled or debacled.

I wish I was Greg Schiano….

“Joe never finds himself thinking the Bucs missed out on Chip Kelly.”
Or “missing” RahRah Morris – of course.
Something tells me that if Schiano would have got a hold of Talib 3 years ago and would have dealt with him sternly but fairly, instead of encouraged his thuggish behavior like the prior coach, Talib may not be facing Incarceration and suspension today.
Not that Talib’s acts are rahrah’s fault but strong intervention can redirect a misdirected person like Talib. When a person in a leadership position enables misconduct this is what happens

“Not that Talib’s acts are rahrah’s fault” seems to be in direct conflict with “instead of encouraged his thuggish behavior like the prior coach.”

Joe never finds himself thinking the Bucs missed out on Chip Kelly.
Who???

Can hardly believe I am going to say this, but:
I agree with Thomas’s post, above.

Chip Kelly coaching The Bucs would have been a complete dumpster fire. I think he would have pulled a Petrino and scurried back to college coaching ASAP. Not sure he would have wrecked his motorcycle with a coed on the back but that’s neither here nor there…

Dungy wasn’t our 1st choice. He worked out great.
Gruden wasn’t our 1st choice. He worked out great.
Morris was our only choice. He was a disaster.
Schiano wasn’t our 1st choice. Stay tuned. But I think the trend will continue.

We got the whole wide world in our hands….

Thomas 2.2 is calling Joe out again. Let the games begin.

Thought I would never see another Lombardi in my lifetime. Boy was I wrong. Schiano is cut in the Lomabardi mold.
May 4th, 2012 at 3:39 pm
Talib must be held personally responsible for his misconduct.
This who were his mentors who should have been tough on him but weren’t – have failed Talib.
May 4th, 2012 at 3:45 pm
Drew: Parcells might tell you to go easy with the “annointing oil” when it comes to comparing anyone to Lombardi…but Schiano has had all the right moves thus far…

Why is Thomas talking about Talib and Raheem? This is getting ridiculous.
Great story. The more I learn about Schiano, the more I like the guy. He reminds me so much of Dungy, but with a more fiery personality. He’s going to do big things in Tampa.

I am not ashamed to admit to developing a serious man crush with Coach Schaino.

We have way more talent than we did in 2010 when we had 10 wins and way better coaching now. The free agents, The draft picks, The coach, The core players we have been waiting to make the step to the next level, man i do not think ive ever been this excited about an upcoming season…It can not get here fast enough
May 4th, 2012 at 5:38 pm
If this guy is half as good a coach as he is a stand up human being we are going to be good. Actually I don’t care if he can coach. What a great guy! Ok, I do care if he can coach.
May 4th, 2012 at 6:37 pm
I think what Thomas is trying to say is that these are all young men still and need positive influences in their life. While Talib is a man and should be held accountable for what he has done. Those around him, mainly those in positions of authority, failed to make him to be a better MAN. And that is a very valid point.
May 4th, 2012 at 6:43 pm
Also. NSO is looking good so far. He has not won a game and I want him to stick around for a long time.
