Warren Sapp Defends Self, Explains Mess
April 13th, 2012Former Bucs stud Warren Sapp was great for making headlines as a player. In recent weeks, he’s been good at making headlines as an ex-player.
For a guy that made by his estimates roughly $60 million gross in his career, it’s nearly gone as he filed for bankruptcy recently.
Sapp phoned veteran sports columnist Gary Shelton of the Tampa Bay Times to explain how he got in this mess, a combination of business deals gone bad and a lavish lifestyle replete with naked women paintings and wild animal-skin rugs.
“I’m not an interior decorator,” Sapp said. “Some designer put [the naked woman painting] on the wall, and I liked it. It’s in my bedroom. By the time a woman gets there, she might be naked, too.”
He laughs, then the conversation turns to the lion-skin rug at the foot of his bed.
“It isn’t as if I shot him,” Sapp said, laughing. “I didn’t go and get him. I just like the rug. I have a zebra skin rug, too, but I shot that one.”
Well, maybe the reason Joe is not married, aside from his beer-swilling, NFL Network-watching, 24/7 football-obsessed lifestyle, is that Joe never had the urge, inclination, desire or need to hire an interior decorator. His poster of Rachel Watson suffices for fine art.

Maybe not hiring an interior decorator is a way of Joe living within his modest means? Once upon a time Sapp could afford such luxury. But when your lone income is a precarious NFL Network gig and even a chunk of that is garnished, such a lifestyle isn’t within one’s means.

Sometimes it’s just better to say nothing. Words to live by Warren.

Chapter 7 Trustee is going to have fun with this one.
He might be just a hair above the personal property exemption.

Damn, the man just cannot shut up. How in the world does he think comments like that will help his cause and/or popularity?
Warren, for the love of God, let your lawyer do your talking unless it’s about the NFL. And don’t even pretend you give a rat’s behind about anyone else. It simply does not fly.
And living like the rest of us? It’s really not all that bad you know.

60 million for Sapp’s career, that just goes to show you how overpaid players are these days. Doesn’t McCoy have a chance to surpass that with incentives and bonuses just from his original rookie contract. Thank the Lord that there is a rookie salary cap, no wonder teams like the Lions were so bad for so many years, make a few mistakes in the draft and your team is instantly set in a financial hole off the get go. However if i was a player I would want the money also because owners obviously have to be making more and more money than 10 years ago even with the economy in the dumps.

I think Sapp is a genius. He spent that $60 million when it was still worth something. He’s probably got a multi-million dollar crib in Avila and a life insurance policy that pays him $500,000 a year in perpetuity. Both are exempt from creditors in Florida.
His neighbor in Avila, Tony Dungy, earned the same amount, tithed 10% to the church and saved every penny. His $60 million with interest is now worth $10 million which will pay him $200,000 in perpetuity before taxes. He sure doesn’t have the memories that Warren has. Maybe Warren, like most rock stars doesn’t remember anything.
