Greg Schiano Reacts To Mark Barron Selection

April 26th, 2012

It is a New Schiano Order for the Bucs and new Bucs coach Greg Schiano spoke with the local pen and mic club to discuss the Bucs drafting Alabama safety Mark Barron.

“It is a great night. we spent a lot of time talking about a lot of prospects. My first night as an NFL [head] coach [in the draft], I cannot tell you how much I am impressed at what I saw and how this takes place.

“You couldn’t draw it up better. We spoke for hours and hours. The first video I saw of Mark Barron, I thought it was just a random guess of his first game. But he plays at the highest level at the best football conference in the land and dominated. He is fired up. He asked for a playbook and we told him, ‘You will get a playbook tomorrow.’

“He loves this game. Studies it. Loves it.

“Do you think he can cover? I know he can cover. He is big, physical punishing player but with range and can play man-to-man coverage.

“Our safeties have to be more dynamic, play in the box, play man-to-man against wide receivers, that is a challenging position. We drafted him to be our safety for a long time. Our safeties will do a lot of things.”

  1. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Note to Jimmy Graham and Tony Gonzalez: I would not recommend going over the middle of the field anymore. If you do, you will be punished.

  2. k_bassuka Says:

Off course he is the guy you wanted all along… what a tool…

  3. big007hed Says:

Wasn’t my top choice but this is a smart pick, fills a big need and is by far the best player at his position.
He will change the secondary, like T Jack used to

  4. Orlandobucfan Says:

Poor schiano he doesn’t deserve to have a gm like dominik teaching him about the draft process.

  5. Stevek Says:

    Love this pick

  6. L.J. Says:

We could have had a quarterback for the defense in Kuekly, instead we have the idiots at one buc palace screw up the pick. Now we will see Kuekly twice a year when he is tackling Blount for the Panthers. IDIOTS!!!!!

  7. Patrick Says:

We need to use the 4th round pick to get another 2nd round pick or possibly move back into the 1st round. In this order…….LB, CB, RB.

  8. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Schiano: “He asked for a playbook and we told him, ‘You will get a playbook tomorrow.’”

So…the defensive playbook is finished now? That’s news to me.

Off course he is the guy you wanted all along… what a tool…

    .

Hey, dummy…it is a fantastic pick…good enough to believe he was the target all along. Barron does it all…stops the run, picks off passes and rushes the passer.

  9. mr.t.50 Says:

JOE – I have a new nickname for SS Mark Barron…. The Red Barron! How about that?

  10. Garv Says:

I believe I’ll take Schiano at his word over some of the most pathetic, ignorant and uneducated rantings of some of the “fans” I’ve heard tonight.

Really now, this kid is a great fit here. It’s not all that hard to understand that.
Tough, fast, physical and goes after the ball. Easily the best safety in college football.

    AWFUL!!!!

  11. Stevek Says:

Glad we got a STUD safety. He’s a baller.

Much better pick then Barrett Ruud 2.0.

We just got a thumper on our D. Let’s get crazy tomorrow!

  12. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    For those complaining…educate yourselves.

A little knowledge goes a long way to easing minds.

    .

Wonder if we could trade the 5th this year and the second next year to get another second this year?

  13. Eric Says:

The usual coach speak after every draft pick.

They blew it, pure and simple.

    A dang shame.

Easily the best safety in college football.

    .

Best safety we’ve had since we loss John Lynch too.

  15. Stevek Says:

    Hey Capt. Tim,

What’s your opinion of the pick?

Thomas, educate the Beiber/Keuchly fanbase on Barrett Ruuds soft play.

We got one softy at DT, we didnt need another.

    Great player!

  16. Garv Says:

    Schiano….Eric……Schiano…….Eric

I’ll go with Schiano and the Buccaneers although I’m sure Eric read an entire Sports Illustrated once.

Some “fans” REALLY need to grow up. It’s embarrassing.

  17. Stevek Says:

Damn negative “sheep”. Wake up and smell the coffee. We got an actual safety now.

Not an undersized HOFer’s son, a drug addict, or an undersized and slow special teams player?

And this guy lays the wood.

Can’t emphasize enough, we didn’t get a softy!!!!!! Woot!

  18. canadianbuc Says:

I actually am warming up to this pick i have heard great things guys supposed to be a beast but…….Who the is going to be our CB other Wright????

  19. Oahubuc Says:

They probably didn’t have a print playbook available for him if they thought they were picking Claiborne. In that case they would have brought along the audio version.

  20. Capt. Tim Says:

Yeah, an 80s style Strong safety. Big against the run, stiff in coverage.
    Yeah, basically a small LBer.

Hard to believe we we amped up for months over this one brief moment- and it’s an Epic fail.

  21. Stevek Says:

    Garv,

    One point for you! Zing!

Lmao, did he join Peter King a circular celebration for the Kate Upton issue?

  22. Capt. Tim Says:

Oh, and don’t forget the multiple hernias . . .

  23. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Captain Tim,
So what happened? You are hiding like a little school girl aren’t you? You said T-Rich wasn’t going early, and we had to have Claiborne. If we HAD to have Claiborne, we would have just picked him at 5. I guess, for the first time in your miserable little life, you were wrong. Write this date down in history.

  24. Patrick Says:

I think this is a good pick, even though this is not who I expected us to take.

But we could’ve had CB taken care of already. The fact that he spent $40 million on Wright…..BUT…the Falcons got Samuels for a 4th rounder and $18 million (much cheaper), shows that it was a huge rip off. I really don’t see Dom staying here very long as a GM.

  25. deminion Says:

im on board with the pick now GO bucs!!!

  26. Stevek Says:

    Tim,

Clearly Claibourne was not as good as beefed up to be?

Weak sauce tackling is a Schiano-no.

  27. Rrsrq Says:

Nice pick, will still get the needs of lb, cb and RB.

  28. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Capt. Tim Says:
    April 26th, 2012 at 9:47 pm

Yeah, an 80s style Strong safety. Big against the run, stiff in coverage.

    .

Actually, Barron is good in man coverage.

  29. Eric Says:

This is what u get when you hire a guy from Rutgers, “learning the process”.

  30. Capt. Tim Says:

Eric- yup, and this draft could have gotten us a great player..
Instead, we get an “in the box ” safety, who will struggle in coverage

  31. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Captain ignoring the fact he was wrong – predictable. Who’s the one crying now? LMAO

  32. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Patrick
I prefer a CB who picks the ball off myself, but Wright is a shut down corner. After Biggers horrible coverage last year, I’ll take Wright over him anytime. Long as we get a good CB to replace Talib.

I suspect Foster is remaining at ILB this year…and he should. He was put into a bad situation last year. He will have a chance to proove he can play the spot this year, unless we get Hightower in Round 2.

  33. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Capt. Tim

Come on…you’ve been doing so much better lately. You should know that Barron is better in coverage than you claim.

  34. tommy Says:

the tool is you bassuka…..what a loser

  35. tommy Says:

your a loser too private tim

  36. k_bassuka Says:

    @ The Dutcher Journal (Major $uck @ss)

If Barron was the pick they wanted all along then why move down and possibly loose this great pick of ours??? And why not make the trade with DAL instead???

Barron may turn up to be a great player but to act like if he was the player they wanted all along its another complete different story…

  37. Bobby Says:

The usual losers come out of the wordwork! It’s really pretty funny how clueless most are. If you didn’t know much about Barron what the hell do you know since he was the 8th rated player in the draft?!!? STFU and suck your clueless crybaby thumbs. We got a starter with our first pick and a probable pro bowler. Well done Bucs!!

  38. BamBamBuc Says:

I love this pick, don’t care what anyone else thinks. Good move. Talib will probably serve a suspension, but will play a few games for a cheap contract this year. Wright will be serviceable. Barber will give us one more all out effort year. Biggers could improve. But we had nobody at Safety. Injury-prone Grimm, Devin Holland, Larry Asante, Ahmad Black… eh, yeah, nobody. Now we have a stud SS. Our CBs will last another year. We can still get a decent LB and even a 3rd down RB this draft. There are still CBs to choose from. Relax, we got the best Safety in the draft. We could have had the best CB or LB or whatever, but we chose the best SS. At least we didn’t pick the 2nd best CB, that would be a waste.

  39. Bobby Says:

    Woodwork

  40. Thomas2.2 Says:

Barron is an athletic safety, he has very good coverage skills. Barron is highly rated for a safety – which typically means mid first to early second round.

The Ed Reed and Brian Dawkins range. Tough safeties with flaws like speed, like Lynch go 3-5.

Almost always, taking a safety in the top 5 is a mistake – even if he is a good player. I think Barron will be good.

However, the difference in impact between T Rich and Barron is lught years. They both were RBs in high school, T Rich made it as a RB, Barron couldnt so they moved him to safety.

  41. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Capt. Tim

    From TBO:
“Barron was part of an Alabama defense that led the nation in rush defense (72.15 yards per game), pass defense (111.46 yards per game), total defense (183.62 yards per game) and scoring defense (8.15 points per game) in 2011.”

  42. k_bassuka Says:

    @ tommy

oh please, you no like when fans talk about your great HC and GM 🙁 …

  43. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Wow…a somewhat positive comment from Thomas…

  44. Bobby Says:

@Thomas…so what’s your point bonehead???? We couldn’t get Trent and apparently they like Barron who was rated #8 by Mayock who I respect a whole lot more than you.

  45. Thomas2.2 Says:

    At Pete:

There will be 4 first round draft picks from that Alabama defense. It is dumb to put all of those statistics on Barron – a safety.

I know that you are knew to the game.

  46. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    BAM BAM
    What do you think?

ROUND TWO: Dont’a Hightower or Lavante David?

    Or RB with David Wilson?

  47. Thomas2.2 Says:

    New – damn Siri

  48. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Thomas…I know that you are “new” to spelling and grammar…Mr. “Lawyer”.

  49. Name Required Says:

I could listen to Schiano read off a grocery list and I’d get pumped up about buying eggs.

  50. Bobby Says:

Actually Thomas, you should learn to read. He said part of an Alabama defense. Put the liquor down and try to make a valid point tonight.

  51. Drew Says:

    Food for the thoughtless:

TJ gets axed which raises the potential the Bucs will draft a safety.
Rhonde moves form CB to safety in the mini-camp and this hits the news wire he’ll potentially play saftey. He also states the Bucs will draft MC. Leading the NFL to believe they’ll draft a CB in MC.

A smoke screen of a chess game played out beautifully. MB was the targeted player and it doesn’t take an Einstienian way of thinking to figure this one out.

  52. Eric Says:

Well I guess those heated TR vs. mo arguments look a bit sily now!

  53. Thomas2.2 Says:

    Bobby:

Are you happy to start the day with the #5 pick and end the day with Mayock’s 8th best player, a safety, and a 4th round pick?

Who is likely to be Myron Lewis or Kyle Moore-esque.

  54. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Lions go DL again???

  55. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

I am Thomas. But to be honest, no one really expected you to be satisfied today anyway.

  56. snook Says:

“And he didnt score a 4 on the Wonderlic.”

  57. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Joe must be drinking now, lol.

  58. Thomas2.2 Says:

    Bobby:

Pete didnt say that – it was a quote dumb a–. I corrected him bc he used it as if it proved something about BarrOn exclusively.

Everyone knows Bama had a dominant Defense – doesnt mean the safety should go #5 overall.

  59. David Says:

When you look at TJax leaving, that left safety as the weakest position. I wanted Mo Claiborne, but either they did not or Dallas pulled on off. Does not matter either way. They got a John Lynch with better cover skills at a psotion they badly needed filled.

Would not be surprised to see them go CB or LB in round 2 then RB in 3.

I never understand the idiots on here who think year after year they know best. The whole thing is a crapshoot. Document all the picks you wanted over the years and see how good they REALLY did in comparison.

Great example: everyone thinks NE does great in the draft. Go look at the players they have taken since Brady… most failed. They nailed some TEs recently but not alot else, even with all their high picks.

Bucs needed DB help in a bad way and they got a guy that Mayock and every other “expert” says can plug in from day one and have a big impact.

Looks good to me, but as always, we will have to see in time.

    WELCOME RED BARON

  60. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

There went Hightower…guess Foster IS playing ILB this year!

    .

Revisionist history as usual. Wrong again.

  62. Thomas2.2 Says:

I am just dying to know what Dom would score on the Wonderlic?

Jerry Jones is laughing his a– off at Dom right now smoking a cigar!

  63. tommy Says:

    high 5 bobby!! again bassuka….your a loser!

  64. bucsnbeer Says:

While I will say this probably was not the value pick at this point, our defense certainly has missed a healthy jermaine phillips. If we can get a real thumper in that spot that can do the job AND be tough enough to stay healthy doing it, our defense will be markedly better.

  65. buCncRaZy Says:

    Go Bucs

  66. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Thomas…just to clarify, here’s my quote:

“Barron was part of an Alabama defense that led the nation in rush defense (72.15 yards per game), pass defense (111.46 yards per game), total defense (183.62 yards per game) and scoring defense (8.15 points per game) in 2011.”

Better to let the world think you are a fool than to open your mouth and prove it.

  67. Kyle Says:

Thomas I think if we picked Jebus (spelled purposely) himself you’d be pissed you really can’t be satisfied. If you had 3 naked super models with you I’m sure that they would still look like sh-t in your eyes. Although your mental handicap does amuse, me keep it up

  68. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Funny how we’ve got the same old characters crying again. Year after year, the same thing. They will never be happy. Must be a happy life you have.

  69. Pirate Phil Says:

Dominick is gonna double dip again and get Harrison smith

  70. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Oh, hey…Thomas…how many career interceptions does Morris Claiborne have?

    Eleven (11).

How many does Mark Barron have?

    Thirteen (13).

Naw…he can’t defend the pass, can he?

  71. Orlandobucfan Says:

So Denver got a 4th round pick to go down 6 spots late the round and we couldn’t get more than a fourth and seventh not even a third come on!!!

  72. BigMacAttack Says:

    BigMacAttack Says:

The best move for the Bucs is to let Cleveland take T Rich after Minnesota takes Claiborne, then trade down with Buffalo so they can select Kalil. Then With the 10′th pick the Bucs select Mark Barron, Luke Kuechly or Dont’a Hightower to fill a glaring need. You can’t run an effective defense without a good MLB, which the Bucs don’t have right now. They also need a great safety which Barron is. That is what the Bucs need to do, Period.
    ——————————————————————————–

Well, I was close with my final prediction. I love the pick and so glad we got one of Saban’s 4 top guys, and picked a 4’th round pick.

Great Job Dom. Next I think Linebacker, Lavonte David but I wouldn’t rule out Janoris Jenkins.

  73. Orlandobucfan Says:

    Harrison smith gone to Vikings

  74. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    From Pat at BSPN:

At 6-foot-1 and 213 pounds, Barron is big enough to play in the box and make an impact on a run defense that needs improvement. With 12 career interceptions, Barron also has shown the ability to make plays in coverage.

“He needs to be able to do a lot of things and he is capable of them,’’ Schiano said.

He’s going to have to cover wide receivers man-to-man, Schiano said. That’s a change from the days of Kiffin’s Cover Two, when safeties picked up wide receivers only after they got past the cornerbacks and Lynch often played the role of a linebacker. That may not be enough in an NFC South in which Drew Brees has thrown for 5,000 yards in a season and Cam Newton and Matt Ryan can put up big numbers. In case you haven’t noticed, that’s not just an NFC South trend. All around the league, teams are throwing the heck out of the ball.

“Safety has become an extremely important position now,’’ Dominik said.

More important than cornerback? Where the Bucs have Eric Wright, an aging Ronde Barber and a question mark in Aqib Talib?

Obviously, the Bucs think so. Dominik said the Bucs would have chosen Barron at No. 5, if they had stayed put. That means they would have chosen him over Claiborne, who was widely considered the best cornerback in this draft.

That’s a pretty strong statement from a team that has chosen only two defensive backs in the first round in its history and both of those were cornerbacks. There’s even a bit more pure football logic about this pick.

The Bucs had a big need at safety after releasing Tanard Jackson. They were left with Cody Grimm, a possible move to safety by Barber and not much else. Barron fills that need.

But I don’t think this pick was completely about Xs and Os and pure football ability.

I think the selection of Barron was another sign that Schiano is going to do things much differently than in the past. Something obviously cooled the Bucs on Claiborne. Maybe it was that he reportedly had a low Wonderlic score or maybe it was something else.

Schiano said he and Dominik saw sparks the first time they watched film of Barron. By the time they interviewed him at the combine, there was a flame. As they talked about Barron, Schiano and Dominik both mentioned that he was a two-time captain on a two-time national championship team.

“He fits who we are and what we are,’’ Schiano said.

I get the impression Schiano cares a lot about what guys bring as players, but I’m getting an even stronger sense he cares about what they bring as people and how that can translate into winning. That’s sort of a new concept around here, at least since the Dungy days.

“He fits who we are and what we are,’’ Schiano said.

In other words, the Bucs think Barron can step right in and be a leader on a team that desperately lacked leadership in the Morris days.

“Our coaches are excited to get their hands on him and mold him into a Buccaneer Man,’’ Dominik said.

We’ve heard the phrase “Buccaneer Man’’ a lot since Schiano took over. The problem is we have no idea what the new Buccaneer Man is supposed to be. But now we’re starting to get a bit of a portrait.

With Barron, there’s a face and maybe an outline of a body and a personality. Looks a little like a a good athlete, a natural leader and a guy who was asking if there was a way to get his hands on a playbook Thursday night, even though he’s scheduled to fly to Tampa first thing Friday morning.

Maybe the Barron pick doesn’t look so bad after all.

  75. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

We’re looking at a totally new Bucs defense here, people. Interesting.

  76. rdbucfan Says:

Vikings just gave up a 2nd and a 4th to move up to get a safety.

  77. Bobby Says:

Will Doug Martin make it to round two? Hope so.

Isn’t Thomas just the silliest imbecile to ever post on this site? Is there ever any value in his rants?? …..Nope.

  78. Orlandobucfan Says:

    Bucs on the clock again

  79. Bobby Says:

We traded back up to get Martin!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!

  80. Bobby Says:

  92. Matthew Says:

    DOUG MARTIN YESS!! Confirmed!

  93. JS1506 Says:

We traded back to the first round. 6 picks ahead i hope we traded away that 4th round pick and nothing more!… RB, LB, CB?

  94. Bobby Says:

@1976Buc…If that’s all we could get then it was fine. It allowed us to get back into the first.

  95. SensibleBuc Says:

Trade up to 31. Doug Martin?

  96. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Bucs back in first!

  97. Rob in Orlando Says:

Everyone please chill out. I, for one, miss the big bone jarring hits from our safety position since Lynch left. Baron is a great run stopper, can cover man to man, is a ball hawk, will fire up the defense like Lynch did and so on. Great pick! Stop bashing our Bucs and support the team. There are no guarantees with any pick but I love our chances of improving defensively with a new starting safety. Get a RB who can block and catch and grab Burfict or Jenkins. Schiano will keep them in line. Go Bucs!

  98. Jacko101 Says:

    Martin

  99. jLM Says:

    Yes!!!

  100. Bobby Says:

OK….Dom is definitely a rock star. What a great, great pick!!!!!! Wow!!!!

  101. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Now you whiners can shut up, lol. Very impressive. The last time the Bucs did something like this they got Brooks and Sapp.

  102. tylund Says:

we gave up nothing to move up brilliant move

  103. BigMacAttack Says:

    RB yes!

  104. Teddy Says:

Doug Martin. Love the trade, love the pick, LOVE IT!!

  105. raphael Says:

    ROCK STAR !!!

  106. Cmurda Says:

YESSSSSSSSSSSS. This makes me feel so much better. What did we give up?

  107. MJ Says:

ha how quickly things change. still didn’t get the value we should have for the first trade, but all of a sudden we get 2 first round picks and and additional 4th if im not mistaken

  108. Bobby Says:

I hardly think Dom got played. We got the #2 RB and the #1 safety and we still have all tthe picks we started the draft with. Genius!!!!

  109. raphael Says:

    lmao @ the haters

  110. tylund Says:

    we just swapped fourths essentially

  111. Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Wow. Schiano gets his Ray Rice!

  112. ClayBURN94 Says:

OH but i thought we should FIRE ROCKSTAR?! Lol wow

  113. Bobby Says:

Thank God we have a real GM and not one of these ‘fantasy football’ crybabies. Sorry we had to suffer through the ridiculous rants but they should shut up now.

  114. Kryq Says:

We gave up our second round pick.

  115. Kyle Says:

I hate BSU with every fiber of my being but I love me some Doug Martin

  116. ClayBURN94 Says:

    AGREED^^

  117. Mark Says:

    Where is Drunkin Adam?

  118. Bobby Says:

We gave up our fourth round pick.

  119. Eric Says:

    Yawn…..

  120. Rob in Orlando Says:

As I was typing, we got our RB. Sweet. Get that LB, maybe gamble on Burfict. Go Bucs!

  121. JT Says:

Love how Joe drops off the face of the earth when we didnt pick his MC… We have done a GREAT job in this draft so far!

  122. Just Sayin' Says:

We got the Only saftey in the draft and we just snaked NYG for the #2 RB

  123. Bobby Says:

Of course we gave up our second round pick…we just moved up into round one. It cost us a fourth round pick to move up 6 spots. Essentially it cost us nothing since we had no 4th to start the draft anyway. I’m loving it!! Blount and Martin! Falcons and all…Be afraid….be very afraid.

  124. knucknbuc Says:

I dont think @eric likes any pick lmao at you. We have had a hell of a draft so far man. You should enjoy it more.

  125. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Boise State running back Doug Martin after trading for the No. 31 pick, which belonged to the Denver Broncos.
    Draft trade tracker

Keep up with all the moves made during the 2012 NFL Draft with this comprehensive breakdown of each trade, including the Browns’ bold first-round move. More …

The Buccaneers also received a fourth round pick (126 overall) and the Broncos received a second round (36 overall) and fourth round (101 overall) in the deal.

  126. Rob in Orlando Says:

Eric, I don’t care what you blog you Buc hater. Go hate on some other team. Never have I seen someone as negative as you about the Bucs. If you hate everything about the Bucs so much, switch teams bro. We don’t want or need non fans like you.

  127. Kryq Says:

Kinda hope we trade back in the second and get Levontae David

  128. Cmurda Says:

Fire him, love him that’s the emotions of a fan. Knock off your righteousness people just because you didn’t sound off on Barron over MO. I’m a Bucs fan and I’ll call it like I see it. If our defense resembles anything like last year’s. Yes, Rock Star will be fired. I had hoped for MO and then Martin. I’m still standing firm that Rock Star got played on the Barron pick. Nevertheless, I take my hat off. A real man picks himself up, dusts off, and gets back after it. Dom didnt take chances and got Martin. I like that. Clearly we are all playing GM and nobody knows who the steal of the draft is and who the busts will be but until McCoy, Price, and several others prove worthy, Dom has ground to make up.

  129. Bobby Says:

Wake up Eric! It’s ok to look foolish! LOL!

  130. OptimisTroll Says:

    @Bobby

We received the Broncos 4th rounder too.

    So to Broncos:
    early 2nd rounder
    early 4th rouder

    to bucs:
    late 1st rounder
    late 4th rounder

  131. Richard Says:

I thought we gave our 2nd and swapped 4ths?

  132. Kyle Says:

We actually swapped 4th rounders so we really didn’t lose anything

  133. ClayBURN94 Says:

@bobby actually we swapped 4th round picks. So essentially we didm’t give up anything!!

  134. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

It was worth it. Only cost us a second rounder to get back into the first round, and the giants would have taken Martin before he fell to us.

  135. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

We should give Dom an extension asap! The trade down was awesome. Then when Mo went #6 it was the next best thing possible. Barron can play all over the field in coverage and hits hard as hell!!

Then to give up basically nothing to move up 5 HUGE spots back into the 1st to get a RB like Doug Martin!!! What a drastic improvement. The Giants would’ve drafted him for sure so this was an amazing 1st round for the Bucs!!!

The only thing that woud make it better would be for us to trade back into the top of the 2nd round either with STL or Indy and draft either Lavonte David or Courtney Upshaw. We could trade next years 2nd in 4th to do it. And both LBs would be def worth it!! But I am just happy with our 1st 2 picks, so that is a true pipe dream. And I would not be upset 1 bit if they don’t do something like that. But that would solve our OLB problem to add to our new all pro Safety and new #1 RB!!! And to have Blount still rush to wear down D’s!! This is the best draft we have had since Brooks and Sapp!!

  136. Mikenice Says:

We gave up our second round pick, which essentially is a draw because we got an extra pick in the first. We also swapped fourth round picks with the Broncos. Not too bad. Go rockstar!

  137. Bobby Says:

@cmurda…shut up bitch!!!!! Barron is a great pick and the trade allowed us to get Martin. Great Friggin’ Move!!!!

  138. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

And I didn’t read any of the other post yet…but I’m sure there will be haters. And to you people I say…get on the Dolphins or Jaguars bandwagon because you obviously know jack sh** about football!!!! And thats all I’ve got to say about that!!!!!

  139. Buccanr1 Says:

Domink got cute instead of picking mc at 5 and it backfired. Plain and simple.

  140. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Cmurda Says:
    April 26th, 2012 at 11:13 pm

I’m still standing firm that Rock Star got played on the Barron pick.

    .

Even though Mark Barron is a better player than Claiborne?

Claiborne can’t stop the run and had 11 career picks. Barron CAN stop the run and had 13 career picks.

    Barron is the better player.

  141. Cmurda Says:

Don’t start calling names Bobby. The internet tough guy act is weak. I never said anything about not liking Barron.

  142. Bobby Says:

We SWAPPED fourths!??!? LOL!!! What a move!!! Great trade!!

  143. bucoooobruceAlstott Says:

We dident give up our fourth we just swaped 4ths.

    Love this draft

    tampaaaaaaaaaaa baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.
everyone say tampa bay if ur with me and agaist the haters 2.2 and c.tim.

  144. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Bucs trade Quincy Black and E. J. Biggers to Colts for 2nd round pick.

    .

(just dreaming, but would be great 🙂

  145. kaput Says:

Why not we see how these players turn out before making judgments, either on the players or the GM? It seems like the compensation worked out favorably for Tampa, but that only holds true if the players can play.

  146. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Bobby…it cost us a second and we swapped forths. So it DID cost us something…but I still think we got the MUCH better end of the bargain.

  147. Cmurda Says:

@Pete. We shall see and I’m hoping you’re right. We’ve been discussing the draft for how long on this site and Barron’s name was never mentioned. Point is Barron is who we drafted and that’s who I’m pulling for now. I like what Schiano had to say about him and all indication points to him being a good character guy. Despite pining for him, I have to admit Claiborne left doubts in my mind in that regard.

  148. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    ampaaaaaaaaaaa baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

    (couldn’t leave you hanging) hehe

  149. bucsmafia Says:

Incase you all missed it, due to going to bed, we traded back into the 1st round and got Doug Martin fron Bosie State!

  150. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I was the biggest Mo supporter. But I was also just as big on trading down…and Dom did just that. He got us a 4th round pick to get Barron over Mo. I even posted before the draft that if we traded down with the Jags, then we should look at Barron. I love this pick…and Martin was the clear #2 RB in this draft. So now we need a LB *cough*Upshaw/David**cough*. I would love to see us still draft Ronnie Hillman in the 5th if he were still there. Which I think he will be. He would be a great 3rd down back if Blount doesn’t work out. But could use the year or two to learn the game behind Blount. GO DOM and BUCS!!!!!!!!

  151. MOBucs Says:

Dom did not get played. Just swapped 4th rounders to grab D. Martin at 31! Great move. Two huge needs filled!

  152. Bobby Says:

@Cmurda…alright…sorry about the name calling but how can you say Dom got played when we come out of round 1 with two starters? Without that move down we have no chance of getting Martin without trading 3rd round picks which would cost much more talent-wise.

  153. JS1506 Says:

I love our first round… so we had the choice: Morris Claiborne at 5 and no fourth round pick and we get Mark Barron a fourth round pick AND Doug Martin (which technically is our 2nd round pick)… absolutely love our first round. Mark Barron CAN STOP THE RUN and play the pass perfectly… stop BI$%(ing about Dominik got fooled etc etc…

  154. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Cmurda

Yeah, I get ya. Barron didn’t pop into my head until roughly two ours before the draft…and I thought a trade was coming. But I did not think we would take Barron without trading back into the first to get him. And I figured Luke was a higher possibility.

Every year the Bucs pull something unexpected and it takes a little time to adjust to the shock. I love this so far though. Reminds me of 1996.

  155. bucoooobruceAlstott Says:

    Yea more bucs supporters

    NOW EVERY ONE

COME ON EVERY REAL BUC FAN WHOS THRILLED SAY

    TAMPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

  156. BigMacAttack Says:

Dom did a great job tonight. I couldn’t be happier. He got all that and still managed to net a 4’th round pick.

  157. Bobby Says:

@Pete..it really didn’t cost us a second. We replaced our second with a first. It only cost us the swap in the fourth. That’s a great move.

  158. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    @bobby

we traded our 2nd round pick to move up 5 spots back into the 1st, which by the way is a HUGE improvement, and only had to swap 4th round pick. Which also by the way, we didn’t have before our original pick at #5. I you can look back in several of my post over the months saying if we traded back Barron would be a good guy to get. I also mentioned other names. But even before the draft I said it tonight. Dude is a beast who can play Safety, CB, and even LB in the nickel. And do great in all three positions!! That qualifies as a #7 pick in the draft! It also allowed us to get the #2 RB in Martin who will be our #1 RB on opening day!!!!!!!!!

  159. Cmurda Says:

Fair enough Bobby. I’m saying I love the Martin move. Love it to death. That was brilliant by Dom. I just feel that Dom had eyes on MO with our 1st pick and thought we could pull off a trade down and add a pick since he didnt have to sweat the Rams. He didnt expect the Cowboys to jump in. According to Mark D, Barron was always his guy. If true, and none of us are in the interviews etc., then he killed it. I just find it somewhat hard to believe with the importance of CB’s especially in our division how you could rate a stud safety over a stud CB.

  160. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Barron has more value on the field versus Luke. He can play multiple positions on 2 different levels and is a game changer waiting to happen! Luke is a great LB but Barron takes care of half the field in the Safety spot. Also, Luke is not a QB pressure kinda player. He finds the RBs and drops back well. But not an attacking force when the QB is involved!

  161. Cmurda Says:

Also validating Funky. He did say if we trade down then we should eye Barron. I take back that noone mentioned Barron. Forgot about you.

  162. BigMacAttack Says:

Sorry but I got shout out at the Rays for the Game winning home run today. What a great day it has been. And the hits just keep on coming. Dominick ruled given the options he had. I’ll take Doug Martin at 31 over Trent Rich at 3 all day long.

It’s just been 1 home run after another.

  163. Mark Says:

So Ronda will be our starting FS, and Mark Barron our starting SS.

  164. bucthis Says:

Bucs jumped ahead of the Giants to draft Doug Martin…great move Dom, not bad for a sorry GM LOL Do the bucs have the potential rookie of the year with that offensive line? I hear that Barron is one of the better players in this draft and possibly one with the most Pro bowls potentially, Thomas, can you please verify this with Mayoc? I believe it is he who said this. Surly, this can’t be true cuz Dom is a knuckle head right? and you have all the insight. right?

  165. Halim Says:

    MARK DUMB-INICK!

  166. bucthis Says:

you have to really be excited with this Martin pick. I like his low to the ground build. I guess he is a Ray Rice type who will be a big help to Freeman…

  167. CoachG Says:

Love both 1st rd picks, still wouldn’t mind seeing a LB sometime in the near future though. Mo Claiborne would have been nice but the cupboard was almost completely bare if Baron is as good as they think we are going to be in good shape

  168. CoachG Says:

I think Martin is a Matt Forte type in game he moves just like him

  169. 40alstott Says:

    love the barron pick

if aqib steers clear of trouble and is able to stay on the team, him and wright outside, barber in the slot. Biggers can turn it back around with less pressure and now we have barron in the run and over the top.

great move with martin also, the bucs have a lot to prove to save dominiks ass…his picks in the past are questionable at best right now

  170. Fish Says:

These comments and perspectives from Joe make me want to delete this site out of my favorites list. Think outside the box, people, instead of getting washed down by the media BS.

Claiborne OBVIOUSLY was of no interest to the Bucs or they would have taken him RIGHT WHERE THEY ALREADY WERE. They wanted Barron and you all have to accept that they know 100X more than all of you combined when it comes to evaluating players – including you, Joe.

Like many of you have mentioned, we even have Claiborne’s position coach on staff and TRADED OUT OF THE PERFECT SPOT TO SELECT HIM. If ANYONE thinks we “missed out” on Claiborne, you’re a moron. Shame on you, Joe.

  171. Oahubuc Says:

    Dominik 2
    Princesses 0

Barron + Martin > TR or Claiborne. Simple equation.

  172. k1ngAdroc Says:

“Boy, is this a solid pick. I love this kid because his floor and ceiling are the same thing. His ceiling is to be a Pro Bowl safety; his floor is to be a Pro Bowl safety. That’s how good this young man is. This is going to be a good football team next year.”

  173. Oahubuc Says:

Careful, Adrock. You’re quoting one of the “delusional idiots” Joe says are justifying the pick.

  174. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Yep, those guys know nothing about the NFL. You should be more concerned with what Eric, Captain Tim, and Shaun King feel. They will clear up any confusion.

  175. Oahubuc Says:

Another positive: These rooks will have no real contact with Raheem Morris or Greg Olson.

  176. christopher Says:

One, if you’re gonna pine for Kuechly, don’t repeatedly misspell his name.
Two, if you’re gonna call someone an idiot, DO NOT say “Your an idiot”. Or do. It’s one of the funniest things in the world to me.
Three, once Jacksonville took Blackmon away from the Rams (which obviously we fostered happening), the Bucs knew full well the Rams wouldn’t be that interested in staying there, since WR is their biggest need & Blackmon was by far the best talent @ WR. With the Eric Wright signing & Tanard being released, in retrospect we were screaming “We’re taking Mark Barron!”. Thing is, Mark Barron @ 5 was too high, & we were probably looking to move down a little (hence the long draft time), BUT, all I heard the two days before the draft was how high Barron was moving, so we couldn’t trade 7 to a Barron suitor. Once we couldn’t hit that sweet trading spot, we just took the player we wanted.
Four, if JoeBucsFan was around in 1995, I have ZERO doubt people would be harping on the trading down, & the fat pothead we drafted @ 12, & the small linebacker we picked up from FSU.
& five, please name for me our stud corner when we won the Super Bowl. No, Ronde & Brian Kelly don’t count. We had a pretty good SS though…

  177. Oahubuc Says:

SS is absolutely critical. Don’t take mine or Dom’s word for it; study up on the defensive philosophy Schiano comes from. Then look at our safeties, then look around and see what better prospect there is available to us…

  178. bucfat Says:

I dont like the Barron pick. Dom has a thing for Injured players. Barron isnt even healthy.
He will get hurt by mid season. Mark my words Joe.

  179. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“I dont like the Barron pick. Dom has a thing for Injured players. Barron isnt even healthy.
He will get hurt by mid season. Mark my words Joe.”

    ——-

Heh? What the hell are you talking about?

He’s going to get hurt? Wow, nice prediction. If he doesn’t, I bet you won’t admit yo were wrong. You’ll just change your name and say you loved him all along.

  180. BigMacAttack Says:

Barron had a minor sports hernia. He played with it for at least half of the season. Look at his play and you’ll see how good he was “injured”. He said it was minor and now it is repaired and healed. This guy was probably the best CB in the draft and he plays safety.
