Will Bucs Have Carl Nicks In Fold By Dawn?
March 14th, 2012It’s past midnight Tuesday night as Joe is typing this post. And wow, what a wrong day for Joe to upgrade from an obsolete Blackberry to a brand, spanking new Droid Razr Maxx (Joe wanted an iPhone but Verizon offered a much better deal on 4G phones).
When the gun sounded marking the opening of free agency, Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik wasn’t wasting time, locking up wide receiver Vincent Jackson.
Now Joe knows from Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, via Saints offensive guard Carl Nicks’ agent, that Nicks landed in Tampa just moments ago. Imagine Dominik and new coach Greg Sciano sitting down to a table full of wings at Hooters to talk football and (hopefully) sign a pact, the same kind of sales pitch Chucky used to land Ken Dilger in what seems like a lifetime ago.
The way players are being signed in the wee hours of the morning, Joe wouldn’t be surprised if Nicks is a Bucs player before the sun rises this morning.
Now is the time to worry about the defense. There are still good linebackers are there for the taking. There are scant corners.
If the Bucs offense struggles next year provided Nicks joins the team, there will be no excuses with so many Benjamins invested in the line and a clear No. 1 wideout to stretch the field.

Makes you long for free agent opening days of years past when it all STARTED at midnight eh Joe?
…wait…
March 14th, 2012 at 12:38 am
Hopefully we can grab a diamond in rough corner. Maybe Porter.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:42 am
GMC wants Reggie Smith and Lofton.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:42 am
Nicks is a Battleship!! Would just jump our line from “decent”, to dominant! He’s that good! Best guard in the league. Playing next to Penn makes an All pro left side. Playing with Zuttah and Joseph makes the middle of our line formidable!
If they sign Nicks, It will be the most excited about Buc football I’ve been, since the night they got Gruden!
My faith will have been restored! I will rejoin the ranks of the believers!
Man, I gotta find out my marching orders!
Gotta see if I’ll be around here, and need to buy my season tickets!
March 14th, 2012 at 12:45 am
Oh, good work Joe! Way to stay on top of the truth, and not get tricked with some of the wild speculations being thrown around.
Hard to believe. Tampa has arguably one of the top WRs in the league!
Man- exciting stuff!
March 14th, 2012 at 12:46 am
Good to have you back Captain. Totally agree about our OL. We would instantly be one of the best in the league, and would probably have the best left side in the league. Can you imagine the protection Freeeman should now get, and the holes Blount and Richardson (that’s for you Joe) will have to run through. It should also make pass protection simpler for Blount. You could just tell him to ignore the left side and look right every time. Doesn’t get any simpler than that.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:49 am
Why is ESPN currently running “Bucs and Vincent Jackson in negotitations” on the bottom line right now?
March 14th, 2012 at 12:50 am
@Capt. Tim
Marching orders?
March 14th, 2012 at 12:50 am
Ok nevermind. Must’ve been an erroneous posting the line is updated with the deal.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:51 am
Capt:
Well, Joe got tricked by SI.com, so Joe wasn’t without blame.
J 2.0:
Two words: NFL Network.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:54 am
Yeah, ESPN’s coverage sucks. I got tired of the repeat on NFL Network so I switched to ESPN. I was there for 2 minutes and decided it is better to watch the same thing over and over on NFL Network versus the crap they put out on espn.
March 14th, 2012 at 12:54 am
Get it done!!! Today was a great day and tomorrow is hopefull just as great with more signings after this horrible season good to know ownerships ready to take the next step and restore trust into this fan base TIME TO GET EXITED IN TAMPA AGAIN!!!
March 14th, 2012 at 12:56 am
There should be no excuses now. If Freeman doesn’t have a stellar year it will ALL be on him. 2 of the best guards in the NFC, a true #1 WR and big target. You already know they will get the running game back up too.
Freeman needs to bring it this year! Dare i even say the Nfc South karma of worst to first? Saints are going backwards. Atlanta looks to have maybe just missed their golden ticket. Really all we have to worry about in the future is The Panthers!
March 14th, 2012 at 12:57 am
Joe, Meybe a little, but you remained the best source for the truth, which is why we are all have such loyalty, to you and this site
I stand by my compliment!! Lol
Pete- where I’m gonna be next. I’ve enjoyed being Home since end of December. But I know that won’t last. Soon, I am certain that I will be leaving for a while.
And damn it- I bet I’m gone during Football season – Again!!
March 14th, 2012 at 12:57 am
I used to have FIOS, but now I have Brighthouse so I can’t watch the NFL Network anymore. My fav FIOS channel during season was NFL Redzone.
March 14th, 2012 at 1:00 am
I heard Eric Wright is more then likely the choice at CB for us. Carr is in Dallas and probably wont leave with out a deal. Wright is here and i see him getting a deal. But he isn’t bad and has consistently gotten better each year. Minus 2010 kind of dropped off that year.
signed:
V-Jackson(WR)
in the building:
Carl Nicks(LG)
Eric Wright(CB)
in talks with:
Lofton(MLB)
Tulloch(MLB)
Hillis(FB)
Looking good so far.
March 14th, 2012 at 1:01 am
This year already a million times better then last years FA lols. Sad but True!
March 14th, 2012 at 1:02 am
Hawaiian- lol. You knew I always would be back.
Despite some truly serious doubts about this teams commitment to winning- I
Always end up remaining true to who and what I am.
And I am proud to say that I consider loyalty and faithfulness important virtues.
Now- all good as long as we don’t discuss Talib- k?
Thanks for the welcome. It feels good to believe again.
March 14th, 2012 at 1:03 am
day one offence, day two defense?
March 14th, 2012 at 1:06 am
I feel day 2 we will see the majority of what we are going to get out of this FA pool. Or at least any names worth talking about.
They hopefully will have Nicks and Wright signed early morning. Then Aim for the LBers in the afternoon/evening among other depth players.
March 14th, 2012 at 1:08 am
No Talib talks? Where’s the fun in that? Did I mention he’s a great guy and would love to have him back next year. Just kidding!!!
March 14th, 2012 at 1:09 am
La Canfora just tweeted:
“Bucs still grinding away on a deal with top guard Carl Nicks. Sounds like they will burn the midnight oil to get it done #freeagency”
I’m so glad it’s only 7pm here and if it does happen tonight I’ll be up.
March 14th, 2012 at 1:25 am
You are truly awesome Joe, working around the clock on strange new technology, to bring us the latest news.
Nicks signing will be quite the Coo for Mark Dominick, If he can get it done.
Looks like Faine is on the way out, but we have Zuttah. Still, perhaps we draft a truly dominant Center, and keep Zuttah as a versatile backup ?
March 14th, 2012 at 1:28 am
Nah, I think they want Zuttah to start with the money he’s making. It’s bye bye Faine the second we sign Nicks (please please please let that happen). Aside from depth, our OL is complete. We don’t need any early round draft picks wasted on a team strength.
March 14th, 2012 at 1:33 am
Umm once you do the IOS 5.1 update on the 4S then it does 4G anyways…. Would be a great signing for the right price… You could probably get Grubbs for a couple mill a year cheaper and be able to put some money towards a right tackle… But still GO BUCS! BTW we still need a CB LB and S.. LB is strong in the draft S… well not so much
March 14th, 2012 at 1:33 am
Hawaiian do you have warren sapp on twitter? Cause him and la canfora are talking bucs pulling an allnighter and Warren also seems to be getting exited about the bucs!!!!
March 14th, 2012 at 1:40 am
@Canadianbuc,
I used to, but he just tweeted too damn much, so I unfollowed him. I’m adding him now though. Thanks for the reminder.
March 14th, 2012 at 1:49 am
Zuttah played as Center in college under Schiano if i remember correctly. It’s his best position.
In saying that, i am curious to see how good he can become. Having to pro bowl guards on either side of him should ease any mistakes he makes.
March 14th, 2012 at 1:50 am
Saints are heavily pursuing Grubbs.
March 14th, 2012 at 1:51 am
@CanadianBuc
I saw that too, just a few minutes ago. Seems Warren Sapp knows something we don’t just yet.
March 14th, 2012 at 2:34 am
Sad! I checked back, at 2:30 am – to see if he signed yet
Do people sign contracts at 2:30?
March 14th, 2012 at 4:15 am
Just got off of work so this is news to me; Nicks is in Tampa already? I can dig it.
March 14th, 2012 at 6:49 am
Joe:
Return the Droid and get the iPhone 4S. Really. It’s well worth the difference.
March 14th, 2012 at 7:45 am
Bucs just signed Eric Wright
March 14th, 2012 at 9:42 am
@Joe, welcome to the world of Android. You will be very pleased that you didn’t follow the sheeple and get an iPhone…that’ll be outdated in 6 months when they release an iPhone 6.
March 14th, 2012 at 10:00 am
celly:
Can’t believe how many light years better this Android is. Problem thus far is managing the touch-typing. Joe does a lot of typing and this is a pain so far.
