What Was Marty’s Role?

March 13th, 2012

Joe is wondering how rockstar general manager Mark Dominik and Team Glazer reportedly are ironing out gargantuan contract details with No. 1 wide receiver Vincent Jackson — a guy they haven’t even shook hands with yet at One Buc Palace.

It just seems like an extraordinary leap of faith for a front office that has largely shunned free agency in recent years. Joel Glazer even said a few years ago that relying on free agency can lead a team down a “dark path.” Now the Bucs are considering granting Jackson what’s got to be $30 million of guaranteed money before they really get to know him.

So Joe must consider how the Bucs have been doing their homework/investigation on Jackson over the past few months. And that brings Joe to Marty Schottenheimer interviewing for the Bucs head coaching job.

Did the Bucs really give old man Chokenheimer and the rest of the dead coaches society they interviewed a legitimate shot at the head coaching job? Nobody knows for sure, but it was widely speculated that the Bucs smartly were just bringing these guys in to soak up their vast knowledge of league players and coaches.

Schottenheimer, who Dominik worked with under in Kansas City years ago, drafted Vincent Jackson and was his coach during his first two seasons in San Diego. Surely Schottenheimer could share quite a bit about Jackson and could point the Bucs where they needed to go to find more information.

Joe has to think Schottenheimer helped make the Bucs brass comfortable about Jackson. Yeah, it’s just Joe speculating. But it seems a lot more plausible than the Bucs waving money at a guy they don’t really know, especially given some of the legal troubles in Jackson’s past.

Well Marty probably just knew the pre-diva Jackson. Just like there was a pre-diva T.O. So I just wonder how much input he had to give on the 2011 VJ.

We’ve heard that before. Favre, Haynesworth, if it comes down to signing bonus $$$ and not guaranteed $$$ I wouldn’t plan on buying a Jackson jersey anytime soon.

  29. Theodore Says:

I doubt they would have gotten much for Winslow. He’s a prime candidate to get cut. 5th round pick maybe, more likely a 6th.

  30. tonytwocents Says:

thats some serious change! wonder how much cap room we have left.

  31. jLM Says:

  34. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Pete Dutcher,

Amen, exactly what I was thinking.

Just curious though, I wonder what Raheem Morris, and even Jon Gruden, think about all this Buccaneer free agency action. They would have to be shaking their heads. But I’m so happy I really don’t care.

  35. barton1017 Says:

    @peter dutcher

i would if i lived there, but rest assure the Bucs will b heavily followed in St.Louis!!!!!! LETS GO BUCS

  36. Cmurda Says:

  37. 2bucncrazy Says:

nfl network says it is official VJ is a BUC!!! somewhere around 10 mil a year

  38. Kyle Says:

Nfl Network just broke the news that Jackson was signed to a 5 year deal! yippie!

  39. J 2.0 Says:

Now we need to get VJax on board with taking a cab when he is out partying since he can now afford it. He just can’t take cabs with Talib.

  40. lakeland bob Says:

Great signing-now lets sign his former teammate Tolbert.

  41. barton1017 Says:

V-Jax needs to holla @ his boys Fin & Tulloch! then snag Nicks on ur way to Tampa!! lovin it!!!!!!

  42. buddah Says:

Let’s be fair. The fans have blasted the Glaziers for not spending and especially not maiing a splash in Free Agency. They are business men and they finally have listened to the customers. So now to say they haven’t done their due diligence is a patently risiculous argument. Every site dealing with free Agency has Jackson as the top available receiver and Nicks as the best offensive lineman. If these two sign and we get Richardson, we ought to be a top ten offense. So now you’re going to quibble about character. Yes, it’s a risk but it’s a risk worth taking for a badly debased organization. This is an offfense worth paying to see (if we get Nicks too).

  43. Theodore Says:

I’m freakin thrilled with VJax, but I have to think that the Bears played this better by getting Marshall for two 3rd round picks and not paying $26 million guaranteed.

  44. CanadiansBucsFan Says:

This gives us a good vertical threat for Freeman. I would like this pickup, get him and Carl Nicks and that improves our offense dramatically. Explore signing Lofton or Tulloch and a second tier CB. then lets hope we can choose beetween Blackmon and Claiborne when the draft gets here

  45. E350BENZ Says:

Holla, the bucs just bagged v jax

  46. tonytwocents Says:

Joe, please delete every comment that mentions Richardson. Or at least replace every Richardson with Claiborn. Sick of seeing this sh!t.

  47. Bobby Says:

Funny….where are Capt and Thomas with their ‘cheap Glazers’ comments?????

  48. Bucfever40 Says:

This is a gigantic move by the Bucs, good for them!!! I’m sure Freeman is salivating!

  49. Bucco Bruce Says:

It’s reported deal is done, 5 years @55 mil, 26mil guaranteed. Supposed to rake in 11mil 2012,+ 2 mil signing bonus, 13mil year 2. First two years guaranteed then avg 10 mil next 3 years not guaranteed.

  50. Bucco Bruce Says:

Wow go to post it says 0 responces, then post and there are 49. Lol

  51. Dave D. Says:

    Briliant take Joe. Brilliant.

  52. Bulldog Says:

This is a top tier signing, done in an aggressive decisive manner. Damn fine job Bucs. One to be proud of.

  53. Bobby Says:

So, now we have 33 mil in cap space left. If we get Nicks that will take it down to 23-24 mil. No way we give Lofton 9 mil a year, not for a LB. If he comes around for a little less we could get him but let’s not forget we still have the draft and we’re going to have to sign a #5 pick so we can’t go too crazy here in FA. I would think if we get Nicks that may put the lid on the jar for splash signings unless Lofton gets a lot more reasonable. Tulloch may be the secondary option.

It will probably be depth players after Nicks if we land him. I’m OK with that. We have a top pick in the first three rounds of this years draft and if we can trade and get some more picks we should be much improved over last year.
