Cortland Finnegan Excited About Bucs
March 8th, 2012A guy reported to be on the radar of Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik and certainly in the cross-hairs of Bucs fans, Tennessee cornerback Cortland Finnegan, phoned in to Tom Krasniqi yesterday on WHBO-AM 1040 to discuss the NFL and in particular, the Bucs.
Finnegan did nothing to douse the flames of Bucs fans howling for Dominik to land Finnegan.
Tom Krasniqi: Pretty sure this team will ring your phone on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They have the most money to spend in salary cap room, they need a cover corner. Supposedly they are interested in your services. Would you be interested, would you be open to playing for the Buccaneers?
Cortland Finnegan: [Laughs] Absolutely. I am open to playing with any team in the NFL. I will say Ronde Barber, for me, is a guy I have always looked up to. He has played the game at its highest level. To me, a Hall of Famer. He’s just one of those guys that it is awesome just to have played on the same field as him and to have met him. So absolutely, Tampa Bay has a ton of young talent. They have a great general manager there, a new coach, it seems like it would be a great place.
If that doesn’t whet the appetite of Bucs fans, Finnegan went on to rattle off young Bucs players who he believes are on the cusp of something special and singled out Gerald McCoy, Josh Freeman, Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams. Later, Finnegan said he prefers to play for a disciplinarian of a coach, which Greg Schiano is reported to be.
“For a defensive coach, discipline is big,” Finnegan said. “I like the general. If he says to do it this way, then I will do it that way.”
Finnegan also professed how he is close friends with San Diego wide receiver Vincent Jackson and Detroit middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch. If Dominik would somehow be able to lure both Jackson and Tulloch to Tampa Bay, Finnegan, who said he enjoys Florida weather, boasted, “Sign me up!”
March 8th, 2012 at 3:11 pm
Please dominick…
March 8th, 2012 at 3:11 pm
Signing just one of those guys would make me pretty happy, two would be unbeleivable, and somehow getting all three would be an absolute coup de ta for Dominik and his fornt office.
March 8th, 2012 at 3:14 pm
I bet it dosen’t happen because Rock star is the worst gm when it comes to bringing in FA. Our Front office is so slow at doing everything!!
March 8th, 2012 at 3:14 pm
“I don’t want to pick on you or anything,” but in this sense it would be coups d’état.
Ok, I ‘m not really serious, but you did drop that quote earlier.
March 8th, 2012 at 3:17 pm
Seems like there are lot of moving parts in Finnegan alone and his signing could lead to more than just him.
I’m all for it. We need DB help, no doubt about that.
I wonder if Barber isn’t re-signed how that affects Finnegan’s intentions.
March 8th, 2012 at 3:18 pm
I like what the rock is cooking…..I believe the Rock star will do it….Throw in Nicks and I say we sign 2 out of the 4.
March 8th, 2012 at 3:25 pm
I suddenly have a strong desire to smoke.
March 8th, 2012 at 3:28 pm
Fine job of rockstar smooching.
March 8th, 2012 at 3:45 pm
That is what im talkin bout.
March 8th, 2012 at 3:54 pm
Gimme those bittles rock star and maybe I will forgive you for a few of your crap signings
March 8th, 2012 at 4:00 pm
I think would rather have Grubbs then Nicks,Grubbs has done better against the elite in the AFC. Either way I would rather have an Elite guard than an elite WR.trade the #5 or take Claiborne in the second round take a LB or ROT.
Tulloch or the MLB from Tennessee would be great!!!
March 8th, 2012 at 4:04 pm
Thank you J 2.0.
Now why don’t you go try to figure out why your elite top 5 NFL WR, Mike Wallace, was barely even the best WR on his team.
March 8th, 2012 at 4:09 pm
Sorry I meant Seattle MLB Hawthorne!!!
March 8th, 2012 at 4:12 pm
What if we sign finnegan ronde comes back and talib doesn’t go to jail who do we draft then?
March 8th, 2012 at 4:14 pm
I liked the part where he quotes Schiano with always Choppin wood .. As long as some team like Dallass or Washington doesnt step in and offer STUPID money we have a shot at this guy.
March 8th, 2012 at 4:15 pm
I would love to see him come here. He and Claiborne as corners……I’m sorry…where was I?? I was fantasizing about our DT’s and DE’s being able to get to the QB because the receivers were actually covered. Aaaahhhhhhh. One can dream…
March 8th, 2012 at 4:33 pm
go get him!! AND THEN DRAFT cLAIBORNE
March 8th, 2012 at 4:47 pm
Bring them all 3 in, Sign them up !! Maybe we can get Landry cheap to, also draft Claiborne.
March 8th, 2012 at 4:49 pm
He also said, very blatantly, that he is “open to playing with any team in the NFL.” If you guys don’t see this whole spiel as a tactic to build up his market value, you’re blind. He may very well end up here, but to act like this is some sign that we are a front-runner, or that he is somehow ours for the taking, I have a bridge to sell you…
March 8th, 2012 at 4:53 pm
I guess it’s ok to dream. Claiborne comes in day 1 as a shut down CB? That’s about 50 50 that would happen.
March 8th, 2012 at 4:55 pm
That trio would help the ticket sales.
March 8th, 2012 at 5:03 pm
OK, IF Mark Dominick lands the trio of Finnegan, Jackson, and Tulloch, I will call him Rock Star.
That would be quite a feat, but we have the money.
March 8th, 2012 at 5:07 pm
feel
Is it a bridge over troubled waters? Cause, I’d be interested!
March 8th, 2012 at 5:10 pm
Bucs have the money, but remember, they will need some of that money next year for extending/re-signing(if needed or applies) Freeman, Williams, and other players’ contracts close to expiring.
March 8th, 2012 at 5:12 pm
And the rosterbating begins…
March 8th, 2012 at 5:13 pm
@KingLewis Draft Claiborne because this is Barber’s last season and it is Talib’s last season under contract.
March 8th, 2012 at 5:25 pm
Sign Finnegan, draft Mo Claiborne, bring Ronde back for 1 year, cut Talib. CB’s are set for the next decade. Then go to work on the LBs and a WR.
March 8th, 2012 at 5:27 pm
well i liked the question above, what if we eep ronde and talib, and get finnegan, WHO do we draft ( i say go claiborn and but ronde at safety with Tjax)
but talib just got into another situation….
March 8th, 2012 at 5:35 pm
Feel, I agree with you, but being blind and being naive are to very different things…
March 8th, 2012 at 5:35 pm
Not sure how I added the ig to my name, but whatever…
March 8th, 2012 at 5:42 pm
Hope nobody eeps ronde, hes a Hall of Famer!
Deserves more respect than that.
Rockstar has got that gun loaded and ready for the 13th. Cmon rock, were counting on you.
Please rock, pretty please, sugar on top. Butterfly kisses.
March 8th, 2012 at 5:46 pm
@DAN some lady sueing talib over threatening her after an accident over two years ago that was never reported. You can’t take that seriously, can you?
March 8th, 2012 at 5:50 pm
Finnegan, Jackson, and Tulloch would be incredible.
March 8th, 2012 at 5:57 pm
Great Interview! But Tom Krasniqi used all of the great FA selling points that we have all said that our GM should use. Great weather, no state income tax, some of the best beaches anywhere, Beautiful training facility… I hope we can get this guy here.
March 8th, 2012 at 5:57 pm
gottbucs,
Give it a rest man. Wallace was by far the best WR on his team. Brown was only open when Wallace was double teamed, which was quite often. The Steelers pound the rock. They are a run first team. They ran 45% rushing plays last year. Detroit 35% rushing plays. Arizona 38% rushing plays. The numbers speak for themselves.
March 8th, 2012 at 6:00 pm
If Ronde and Talib come back I don’t think we sign any FA CB’s and we draft Claiborne. It makes zero sense to have Talib, Ronde, Finnegan, and Claiborne all on the roster.
I think there is zero chance Talib gets cut if he is not jailed, and skates with no punishment from Gooddell. Big if for sure, but still well within the realm of possibility.
March 8th, 2012 at 6:03 pm
Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib is facing yet another accusation of wrongdoing, this time in a civil suit from a woman who claims he crashed into her car and then threatened “to put a cap in [her]” December 2010.
March 8th, 2012 at 6:15 pm
This new Talib case is hilarious. It will never stick.
March 8th, 2012 at 6:16 pm
@ gotbbucs & J 2.0
Getting all 3 would be a “coup” not a coup d’etat …unless Dom is secretly attempting to overthrow the government as well 🙂
March 8th, 2012 at 6:17 pm
Where is the article on the new incident and lawsuit against Talib? LMAO
Where are all the Talib is great, Talib didn’t discharge that firearm now?
He threatened to “put a cap in this woman’s a–.” maybe he is likely to discharge a firearm?
March 8th, 2012 at 6:17 pm
Joe, Please don’t give substance to the Rick Stroud story on Talib until there is some evidence to support such a claim. The Tampa police have no report of an accident or the incident as reported by Stroud!
March 8th, 2012 at 6:25 pm
Yeah, the new Talib story smells a lot like the “Legarette Blount had his buddies kick my ass when I wrecked into his car, drunk, and tried to run” situation. Granted Talib is a moron.
March 8th, 2012 at 6:29 pm
Talib- lol! What an idiot!
Apparently, this lil grandma has witnesses , that were in the car!
March 8th, 2012 at 6:36 pm
Talib’s accuser – “I didn’t know who it was at the time so I didn’t press charges. But as soon as I saw an athlete that had a pending case and saw how much his contract was worth, I instantly knew who my assailant was.”
March 8th, 2012 at 6:49 pm
Just read Cortland is recruiting V Jackson to sign where he signs. Tampa seems to be the number one spot!!! Like the sound of this.
March 8th, 2012 at 6:50 pm
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/08/report-finnegan-recruiting-vincent-jackson-for-possible-package-deal/
My desk at work just raised 8 inches……
ok maybe 4 1/2
March 8th, 2012 at 6:53 pm
@Creamsicle HAHAHAHAH! Gross!
March 8th, 2012 at 6:54 pm
You guys are clueless … This is the work of Finnegans agent paying the woman so the Bucs cut Talib and sign Finnegan and V-Jax.
And you all thought the timing was a coincidence .. HA!
March 8th, 2012 at 7:01 pm
Hope Finnegan and Jackson realize package deal means they both take a discount.
March 8th, 2012 at 7:02 pm
Talib needs some firing range practice. So far he hasnt hit anyone.
Thus, he keeps leaving witnesses.
March 8th, 2012 at 7:05 pm
Finnegan and Jackson as a package deal might not necessarily work out great for us. St. Louis also has a major need at both positions….their need for a top WR exceeds ours, and their need for a CB might be just about even with us. just something to think about.
March 8th, 2012 at 7:15 pm
Minnesota as well. St. Louis just happenend to be the first one i thought of because of the obvious Fisher/Finnegan connection.
March 8th, 2012 at 7:20 pm
Macabee
Not sure what you are suggesting but it appears you are alleging Rick Stroud invented this story. If so, that’s a preposterous statement. It’s public record; a suit was filed in a Hillsborough County by this woman.
Not saying Talib is guilty or not but Stroud did not cook up this story while on a late-night bender.
And yes, Joe is working on this story with a source that will shed some light upon the suit. Hopefully, the source gets back to Joe tonight.
March 8th, 2012 at 7:35 pm
Eric- lol
And it’s not as if he can blend in the crowd
Cop- ” ok lady, discribe your asssailant!”, “he sounded just like Donald Duck, if you pinched his nose!”
“TALIB -again!”
Lmao
March 8th, 2012 at 7:36 pm
creamsicle made me pee pee in my banana hammock
March 8th, 2012 at 7:44 pm
Sure, this is the 5th or 6th person to allege that Talib committed a crime or a tort, or both, against them – and they all are opportunist liars, huh?
How many people made these stories up about Derrick Brooks? Warrick Dunn? Mike Alstott? John Lynch? Ronde Barber?
None. People rarely completely make up these stories against athletes. Do they sue upon them more frequently? Yes, but the same holds true for anyone with assets.
March 8th, 2012 at 7:51 pm
@ Big Marlon B… Rams only have about $14 million in cap room. No way they could afford both contracts. These are gonna be two massive contracts doled out for this duo.
March 8th, 2012 at 7:57 pm
Finnegan and Jackson( and Tullock?) would be a real improvement- not only to the talent, but to the proffesionalism of this team
Can we PLEASE get rid of the Talibs, Quincy Blacks, And Geno Hayes types that keep hurting this team- both on and off the field!
New blood, new attitudes, new Coaches.
I don’t know if that would bring success. But I promise I’d be cheering for them!!
I just can’t bring myself to cheer for the thugs and quitters mentioned above.
Free agency could give Coach Shiano the talent he needs, and give the guy a real chance- without having to deal with those bad elements
He deserves that chance. Hope he gets it!

March 8th, 2012 at 8:15 pm
got a boner while reading this
March 8th, 2012 at 8:28 pm
wow, Finnegan + V-Jax + Tulloch + Richardson/Claiborne in the draft and that = PRODUCTION!!!!!!!!! we could replace Black with Foster. hell lets go Eagles on their a** and sign Nicks as well, then we waive Faine! bet it wont happen tho.
March 8th, 2012 at 8:39 pm
Joe,
I would like to sign up to your proposed 3 man deal. Finnegan, V Jack and Tulloch. Ummmm, most definitely yes.
March 8th, 2012 at 11:05 pm
Why cut Hayes? Did he do something I missed? Or is he a free agent this year? I’m tired and laid up with back pain…not thinking straight. What am I forgetting?
March 8th, 2012 at 11:15 pm
talib and finnegan the bash brothers
March 9th, 2012 at 12:35 am
Awesome interview. Finnegan, Jackson and Tulloch as a package??? HWat a great start. Add Carl Nicks, and draft Blackmon or Claiborne, and I may become a real fan again. But until then, no slack for the cheapy cheapass Glosers.
March 9th, 2012 at 1:56 am
I just read a follow up article pertaining to the Aqib Talib lawsuit. Its at Pft the article basicly says that the lawsuit is BS. Following a car accident police were called. (As with any car accident) The Plaintiff was interviewed by police at the seen of the car accident said nothing to the police about the alleged threat. The Plaintiff has had 15 months to file a police report about the threat and hasn’t. The plaintiff filed a civil suit about the threat against Talib after finding out he was an Athlete. Reportedly there are witnesses that say the threat never happened. While I do agree many fans have given Talib the benefit of the doubt in other situations. At least this time it apears as if it may be a money grab. Ps. I am not a Talib fan.
If Dominik could pull off those FA hires I would be pretty happy.
