Adam Schefter: Courtland Finnegan Not Tagged

March 2nd, 2012

Free agency doesn’t hit for another two weeks and it already feels like it is here.

Just minutes after NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora Twittered that the Titans would slap cornerback Courtland Finnegan with a franchise tag, Adam Schefter of BSPN shot down that report with one of his own:

Finnegan will be free to negotiate with other teams.

@AdamSchefter: Titans will not place their franchise tag on cornerback Cortland Finnegan, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

This makes Joe’s Friday all better again, but still doesn’t hide the fact the Bucs desperately need to draft Morris Claiborne.

They need to draft Claiborne and sign Finnegan/Carr… Improved secondary would be huge!!!

  2. jvato24 Says:

The NFL network is flawed in one way. They lost Schefter .. La Canfora completely SUCKS.

  3. Anthony Says:

LaConfora is by far the worst national reporter. He is always wrong.

  4. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

“but still doesn’t hide the fact the Bucs desperately need to draft Morris Claiborne.”

Here’s where Joe sets the bait, and waits…..

    (I agree, though.)

  5. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Bucs make a play for Finnegan, Tulloch and Garcon. I’d be happy with those additions along with a few more mid-level guys for depth. Plus a good draft, of course. Looking forward to seeing what moves the Bucs end up making.

  6. bucfanjeff Says:

Claiborne won’t be there at 5.
IF we can land Carr and\or Finniegan, Richardson will be the pick.

  7. Gavster Says:

I’m not high on Claiborne at all. I just don’t think he will be very good…

  8. Big007hed Says:

FlBoyInDallas I agree except I like Lofton over Tulloch… Garcon would be a good deep threat

  9. SensibleBuc Says:

    LMAO!

La Canfora continues to be embarrassing. First, he was the ONLY person on Earth legitimately talking up Mike Sherman as head coach and now there’s this. I figured we could at least trust him to get actual transaction-based news since he ostensibly works for the League.

Send La Canfora down to the minors and give me Albert Breer.

  10. Big007hed Says:

Richardson definitely should not be the pick, can get a RB in later rounds… RBs are not worth it that high!!!

  11. Josh Says:

Jason La Canfora should be fired. Seems his sources might actually be the voices in his own head.

  12. J 2.0 Says:

Claiborne will be there at #5. I all for drafting him, but the best available player for that pick is currently tendered by Pittsburgh.

  13. jb Says:

Can you imagine what our secondary would look like if we signed Finnegan AND drafted Claiborne? It’s just too good to be true! NO WAY would this team do something so sensible!

  14. jvato24 Says:

Here we go a thread about Finnegan … So lets start talking about Mike “Jerry Rice” Wallace again.

  15. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

    LOL

  16. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

DUDE!!!! Jerry Rice wishes he has Wallace’s speed!!! PLEASE!!!

  17. BKNYfootballhead Says:

But…but…it’s BSPN, Joe. Oh, man channel, you’ve let Joe down.
    Kidding, Joe.
If we want Cortland, it’s going to be a high priced bidding war with Dallas & Detroit.

  18. J 2.0 Says:

Any FA CB will be a high priced bidding war. We have the arsenal to win, but we all know how much the Glazers love to spend.

  19. J 2.0 Says:

Jerry Rice wears Mike Wallace pajamas at night.

  20. Big Marlon B Says:

Lol I love Adam Schefter, I’m glad he pulled the rug out from under that stooge LaCanfora. That guy is HORRIBLE, he just takes (un)educated guesses and he’s never right about anything. It’s amazing he still has his job, cuz I know if I was as bad at my job as he is, I would’ve been gone a longgggg time ago.

That being said, I would love Finnegan on this team. Yea he may be a bit of a d!ck on the field but he brings attitude, toughness and strong tackling to a defense sorely lacking all 3. He is a great guy off the field, he has a great work ethic and he is not a trouble maker….he keeps his nose clean and has absolutely no off the field issues. He can bring leadership and show this young team how to be professionals.

  21. Big007hed Says:

Detroit can’t afford going after these guys especially if they want to keep Avril… Dallas and Washington might be the biggest fighters for any CB we have to go against

  22. Kryq Says:

Would you consider Laron Landry at Safety ?

  23. thegregwitul Says:

I’ll take Finnegan in a heartbeat, same with Carr from KC. Hopefully the Bucs land one of the two along with a wideout and a LB like Lofton from Atl.

As for the draft, the best moves the Bucs can make would be selecting Claiborne or Richardson or trade down.

  24. MTM Says:

Finnegan to be franchised. If it were true and its not. What does that say about the talent level on the Titans. Finnegan is not very good and why is there some much clamoring for a “likes to fight guy” the Bucs already have 2 D-Bags like that on the team that need to go. Pass Pass Pass move on Pop star no rubber necking.

  25. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

    MTM,

There’s a world of difference between the character of Talib and Finnegan. I think Marlon said it best.

Unfortunately, Dominick has painted the team into a corner through poor drafting and lack of FA signings. This team is paper thin at defensive back. And this is a division with three quality QB’s whom we play 6 times a year. Finnegan might not be the 100% ideal prospect, but, he’s pretty good.

  26. Eastflatbush buc Says:

Let me play Gm for a min, it’s a strong possibility Mo Claiborne won’t be there. Trade back in to the later round pick up n extra 2nd n 3rd grab best lb available n Jenoris. 3rd rd then should be able to grab James. Use the later 1st n offer it for mike Wallace…making hard pitches to Carr n lofton/tulloch. Bucs need Wallace ! Better yet Freeman needs Wallace

  27. J 2.0 Says:

    As per Brent Grime’s agent:

“We have no plans to sign the tag at this time. We hope to be able to continue to discuss all the issues at the appropriate time,”

  28. Buczilla Says:

MTM – Do you actually watch any football? Is the first time you ever heard of Cortland Finnegan on a blog somewhere? The Bucs have no one like him right now. Instead of “likes to fight” think fired up. Does he get in people’s head? Yup. Has he gotten carried away on the field before? Once or twice. However, very few WRs want anything to do with him. Off the field teammates and the community LOVE him.

The Titans are not withholding the franchise tag because he is not that good, he has just been very clear he does not want to be franchised and they have more pressing issues financially.

After all that being said, I would still rather have Carr. If you have a solid argument as to why a guy is not a fit for a team, so be it. Both sides usually have merit, but when I see baseless accusations and silly arguments like a guy likes to fight or he is not good enough for the Titans (when anyone that follows football even a teensy bit should know that is not true), it makes me slap my forehead, and I don’t like slapping my forehead… It makes my co-workers wonder about MY mental stability!

  29. deminion Says:

get Carr/Finnegan draft Claiborne sign Eddie Royal or Garcon sign Curtis Lofton thts just a dream scenario

  30. eric Says:

Yea but what does his third grade teacher say?

  31. Buczilla Says:

    @ eric – LOL

Nothing… She showed up looking for an autograph wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey and “accidentally” got knocked out!

  32. deminion Says:

did the titans tag FS Griffin

  33. CC Says:

Perfect opportunity for the Bucs to improve the secondary immediately. Now lets see if they will spend the dough to sign Finnegan.

  34. Big Marlon B Says:

    @ Eastflatbush buc

wayyy off topic, but its nice to see a fellow Bucs fan from Brooklyn!! there’s not many of us up here, gotta stick together kid lol

  35. Bobby Says:

@Buczilla….I slap my forehead head so much reading crap on this site that I look like I just attended a service on Ash Wednesday…

  36. Buc N' A Says:

@ BigMarlonB – I’m in Brooklyn too! Apparently there are more of us then we thought. We need to get our own bar. I’m sick of Patriots bars, Steelers bars, Eagle’s bars (obviously Jets and Giants bars) We need to either open a Buc’s bar of our own or just take one over. HAHAHA

  37. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Finnegan is the perfect guy to help our team out. He is aggressive, talks a ton of trash to other players, and simply gets into their heads then makes them pay for it! He would improve our terrible CB collection! Still love Mo’, but if we somehow signed Finnegan and Carr we could look at OT in the 1st round. I know every offseason we talk about signing players and then we get let down by our Front Office. But you can still wish!!! And until they don’t sign any top FAs I’m still gonna wish for the best players who can help out our team the most!!

  38. Big Marlon B Says:

hahaha yes lets make it happen!! i actually heard of one in the city (cant remember exactly where)….not sure if u have heard of the radio hosts Ron n Fez, but i think they used to go all the time. i’ll try to find out for u. good to see people reppin the red n pewter up here man! i love the giants too, but i always get some really strange looks when i tell people i’m a Bucs fan

  39. Brain Says:

Finnegan would be a great pickup and that would solidify the CB position for us pending Talib’s trial. Then we can draft Kuechly in the 1st!

  40. MTM Says:

    @ Buczilla

I will try and learn football from you as are apparently the all knowing. But that’s why you are Buczilla. I think everyone on site owes you their gratitude. Keep slapping your forehead it apparently helps your thought process.

  41. Eastflatbush buc Says:

@ Big Marlon. Lol. I know my g! Just had to flex a lil. Stay up!

    ABOUT FINNEGAN

I have no problem with players talking aggressively on the field…but they better be able to back it up. Finnegan is okay in coverage, but he can’t pick the ball off even as good as Talib.

It is said that once a team is known for penalties, the refs watch them more closely and are quicker to call more penalties. That’s where the Bucs are. The refs especially watch our secondary.

A loud mouth is not what we need there…we have that in Talib. Look where it’s gotten us.

  43. 941-Bucs Says:

Dude La Can’treportanythingright. He seems to almost always be wrong on breaking news lols.

  44. 941-Bucs Says:

    @ Pete,

You forgot to mention he is also a Run stopping CB too. WE need anyone who can and will tackle. Finnegan never seems to shy away from contact. We could use that at our DB positions.

  45. 941-Bucs Says:

You know. If we do sign a immediate starting FA. We could put our selves in position to trade down from the first round.

I have a feeling the first day is going to be crazy this year with the rookie cap.

There will be someone who would REALLY REALLY want Claiborne/Blackmon/Richardson over some other team just behind us willing to make a move.

Say Cincy. Trade back get the 17 & 21st pick plus something like a 3rd. This would allow the Bucs to grab still really really good talent but get 2 instead of 1.

Lets say a combination of Dre Kirkpatrick and Mark Barron. Add Tjacks and newly added CB from FA Our Back 4 are already upgraded a bit. ( i Don’t think Kirkpatrick is a far drop off from Claiborne, infact i believe Dre’s ceiling may be higher). Can get Lamar Miller in 2 and use both 3rd rounds for LBers.

Just saying adding picks could end up helping us in the long run, Rather then sign the dream name at the top. Plus we are still getting the 2nd best for each position. instead of the 1 of the first’s, plus a Safety.
