“You know, I Hope So”
February 10th, 2012Former Bucs stud linebacker and current Bucs director of pro scouting, Shelton Quarles, was asked today whether he thinks Tampa Bay will be players in free agency next month.
The answer to WDAE-AM 620 host Dan Sileo? “You know, I hope so,” Quarles said.
Joe got a chuckle out of that one.
Quarles said he and his staff are “grinding on tape” at One Buc Palace analyzing potential free agents daily from “before the sun comes up to after the sun goes down.”
The bell rings on unrestricted free agency in 32 days.

I didn’t get all warm and fuzzy from that response. From what we’ve heard from Mark Dominik recently, that should have been a resounding “Yes we are!”. With FA beginning on March 13, you would think Shelton and his staff would have been given specific instructions on which positions to research and put together an acquisition strategy to get targeted FAs. I hope he was just a bit under the weather and didn’t feel like talking. Otherwise same ole same ole!

The Bucs dont have to wait that long they can sign Routt now… not as #1 CB but as a very solid #2
February 10th, 2012 at 1:28 pm
Routt was cut for a reason…………………
February 10th, 2012 at 1:33 pm
I think the real question to Q should be:
“Can you play MLB for us?”
February 10th, 2012 at 1:38 pm
Routt is not a great CB…he is middle ground at best…not too bad, but not too good either. I think his height is an issue as well, and if so, we play some tall WRs in our division.
February 10th, 2012 at 1:40 pm
Routt needs to clear waivers first. That is the main reason he was cut – didn’t perform near his pay level.
Big pay-cuts can be inspirations to those that want to prove dejectors wrong.
February 10th, 2012 at 1:45 pm
I hope it is “hope so” only because the FA’s must decide to come here and sign the contract.
If it is “hope so” because we aren’t sure about “Mark Dom Corleone” and “The Three Glazers” being willing to, I think we have nearly insurmountable problems.
February 10th, 2012 at 1:46 pm
yea K2, Routt was cut for a reason….senile Al Davis signed him to a deal where he was averaging well over $10 mil per lol. he is a decent #2, not a #1….and certainly not at a cap # of $10 mil+
February 10th, 2012 at 1:48 pm
Rumors of Derrick Brooks joining the Buc’s staff as a coach are circulating !
February 10th, 2012 at 1:50 pm
Routt does NOT have to clear waivers. he was cut outright, not placed on waivers. his agent already said he has visits lined up (i believe) with Buffalo and Tennessee. u cannot have meetings set up with teams if u are subjected to waiver claims. besides….even if HE WAS put on waivers, WHICH HE ISN’T, nobody would claim him at his current number anyway. he doesn’t have to wait until March to sign like all of the upcoming Unrestricted Free Agents….that is when their current contracts expire technically, so that’s why the free agency period starts then. players cut now are free to sign with whoever they choose….much like Sean Rogers was last year.
February 10th, 2012 at 1:59 pm
@Apple Roof Cleaning – qualify that with facts.
February 10th, 2012 at 2:01 pm
Routt gets beat deep a lot. We have that in Talib already.
February 10th, 2012 at 2:01 pm
Big Marlon B is right on 2 fronts: he was cut b/c his contract had him as one of the highest paid CBs in the league and he is not on waivers he was cut straight up and is free to sign as of today…. He would provide great depth and especially with all of the 3 and 4 WR sets having quality depth (which Biggers and Lewis are not) is crucial
February 10th, 2012 at 2:18 pm
@ mark2001 I think you nailed it on the head with your “hope so” analysis. For those that did not hear the interview in its entirety, Shelton definitely gave the impression that they would be active players in free agency.
The “hope so” was when Dan asked him if they would be landing free agents. So to the point – It takes two to tango. Let’s hope Rock Star and company can get their sales guy mojo kickin’ in high gear! Mr. Quarles knows what a player that will embrace the Buccaneer way should look like. Heck, he may be the poster child for it!

“Rumors of Derrick Brooks joining the Buc’s staff as a coach are circulating!”
Circulating where? I seriously doubt it.
February 10th, 2012 at 2:28 pm
Circulating here, and nowhere else. lol.
February 10th, 2012 at 2:38 pm
@appleroofcleaning you hear that cleaning someones roof today?
February 10th, 2012 at 2:38 pm
Speaking of rumors: Mike Sullivan (Giants) interviewing for the OC position
February 10th, 2012 at 2:46 pm
@SensibleBuc where did u see that?
February 10th, 2012 at 2:56 pm
@sensiblebuc ya i dont see that anywhere…
February 10th, 2012 at 3:05 pm
profootballtalk.com is reporting Sullivan interviewing for OC
February 10th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
Just google his name and it’s there.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:07 pm
btw …Oakland COULD BE cutting Michael Huff and Aaron Curry
February 10th, 2012 at 3:10 pm
@raphael The Commish posted an article with his thoughts on the Raider cuts… how interested should the Bucs be in any of the guys?
February 10th, 2012 at 3:11 pm
Wow Sullivan would be a great hire.
I dont know what you guys were so worried about!
🙂

Sullivan interviewing for OC posn. PFT article linked.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:18 pm
@ joe, whats up with the reports from PFT about the Giants WR coach Mike Sullivan interviewing for OC job. Good thing or Bad?
February 10th, 2012 at 3:18 pm
@big007hed I would say Huff for sure and maybe Curry. Curry was the 4th overall pick a few years ago and he ain’t worth 8.5 million he is due. If we could get him at a lot less money then yeah…The problem is money might have caused his bad play in Seatle…
February 10th, 2012 at 3:22 pm
Looks like Rachel Nichols from ESPN twittered it. No real story out there just yet. I wonder if Ira Kaufman can step away from the bar at Green Iguana long enough to check it out. Prob not.
February 10th, 2012 at 3:25 pm
I Get the feeling there may be some decent releases in near future throughout NFL. Wont take much at all to upgrade LB.
Bucs LB core right now
SLB – Quincy Black, Dekoda Watson
MLB – Mason Foster, Jacob Cutreras
WLB – Adam Hayward,Rennie Curran
Holy Sh*t, Am i missing anyone or is that really our LB Core ???
February 10th, 2012 at 3:27 pm
@raphael Huff interests me but Curry has done nothing since coming into the league, he reminds me of Hayes except drafted higher
February 10th, 2012 at 3:29 pm
Mike Sullivan? Road to Perdition here we come!
February 10th, 2012 at 3:45 pm
Give Josh Jermichael Findley and a top tier WR. Add a good Linebacker and Corner. And do the rest through the draft…another corner/LB/Safety, speed back, and I think we would be going in the right direction.
February 10th, 2012 at 4:06 pm
@big007hed I agree …
February 10th, 2012 at 4:41 pm
Sheltons comments on FA are employee speek for NFW.
February 10th, 2012 at 6:35 pm
I’d keep Hayes for depth and cut Black. He’s cheaper and better. Hayes was a 6th round pick so I really don’t think we can be too hard on him
February 11th, 2012 at 9:41 am
Albeit few and far between, Hayes has made more splash plays than Black. Keep Hayes, dump Black.
