Report: Schiano Staff Nearly Complete

February 7th, 2012

Joe hopes this isn’t true. Let Joe explain.

Alex Marvez, who is a very-well-plugged-in NFL type who writes for FoxSports.com and works for SiriusXM NFL Radio, just posted a report that new Bucs coach Greg Schiano has his staff just about set.

A source told FOXSports.com that Ron Turner and Bill Lazor are among the candidates being considered at offensive coordinator. Schiano also will be adding three of his former staff members at Rutgers University — Bob Fraser (linebackers), Brian Angelichio (tight ends) and Jeff Haley (assistant defensive backs coach).

This frightens Joe to his very bones. Ron Turner is a horrible quarterback coach and has — at best — an underwhelming resume as an offensive coordinator. Unless a guy’s name is “Mike Martz,” why in the world would anyone want a jettisoned Bears quarterback coach?

Currently, Turner’s career highlight is developing Kurt Kittner.

Oh, and he got run from Illinois for having a putrid offense as well.

Joe is crossing his fingers this report is inaccurate, if for no other reason than for Josh Freeman’s career.

  1. jLM Says:

    And DC?

  2. I_Miss#40 Says:

Joe, wasn’t Turner a pretty good OC with Chicago? I thought he was the OC during E. Kramer’s good season?

  3. Bulldog Says:

AND >>>>A source said that Frank Cignetti, who was Schiano’s quarterbacks coach at Rutgers last season, has taken the same position with the St. Louis Rams.

  4. I_Miss#40 Says:

Oh yeah and wasn’t he the OC when they went to the Superbowl?

  5. Joe Says:

Joe, wasn’t Turner a pretty good OC with Chicago?

    Hell, no!

  6. surv Says:

I don’t think it matters too much. Give me Lazor. As long as a tight ship is ran I embrace the no-names that won’t necessarily be bad picks, but might just get the job done under a disciplinarian.

  7. Buc You 2.2 Says:

Who cares, Schiano is the savior.

  8. BucFan South Tampa Says:

Ron Turner is the brother of Norv Turner, and has been the WR coach for the Colts since 2009. Colts WRs havent been too bad since 2009.

  9. eric Says:

Everything keeps coming up Wannstedt, who Turner coached under.

    Super boring offenses. Perkins like.

Hope its Lazor out of those two crappy alternatives.

Extremely weak and unimpressive. Ask Bears fans about Turner, they will tell ya.

  10. Brandon Says:

Turner was decent in his first stint as OC at Chicago. It got him the head coaching gig at Illinois, which started well, he got to double digit wins one year, then the team stunk for the past few seasons he was there. His last season in Chicago he was fired and replaced with Mike Martz. He was the OC for Chicago during their Super Bowl year… with Rex Grossman as a starter… which could mean he’s a miracle worker.

The type of offenses he runs are the Joe Gibbs/Don Coryell style that Norv Turner, Martz, and … I can’t remember the other guy right now… use. Which means they like to run the ball and push the ball down the field with deep passes.

Bill Lazor is more of a WCO type guy (though he coached under Gibbs far longer). He also likes to run the ball and quite honestly, he worked wonders last season at UVa with a woefully overmatched Cavalier offense. The QB this past season was horrible to start the season (Michael Rocco) and helped turn him into a strength by the end. Again, he does like to run the ball as well, recently with a 3-pronged attack (Perry Jones, Kevin Parks, Clifton Richardson).

  11. bucfanjeff Says:

    Great.
    I’m thrilled.
    Yawn.

  12. Joe Says:

Joe can assure you as he grew up watching the Coryell-led St. Louis Cardinals and then watching years later the Air Coryell Chargers, not only was Ron Turner’s offense the polar opposite of Coryell, shoot, Coryell didn’t even like to run the ball.

Comparing Ron Turner to Don Coryell is like comparing Paul Johnson to Steve Spurrier.

  13. Jarret Says:

Oh good, more coordinators and position coaches that’ll be fired by this time next year. Boy do I love seeing my hometown organization continue to fail and this front office drag their feet like always.

  14. K2theSoldier Says:

Improve the roster or it won’t matter if Sean Payton is coaching the offense.

  15. Richard Says:

“The Bears team completion percentages in 1994 (61.4%) and 1995 (60.2%) rank as the highest in team history. Chicago’s net passing yard total of 3,743 in 1995 ranks second in team annals while the total of 3,185 in 1996 was pushed to sixth in team history by the team’s totals from 2006 and 2007.[1] With Erik Kramer at quarterback in 1995, the Bears set a team record for passing yards per game with 233.9 while compiling the fifth-most points in team history with 392. Kramer set club records with 29 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions (least among 16-game starters).[1] The 1995 squad produced the third-most total net yards (5,673) and the second-most first downs (340) in team history. The offense also featured a 1,000-yard rusher and two 1,000-yard receivers in 1995, the only such season in team history. During his earlier four years with the Bears as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach under head coach Dave Wannstedt, Turner guided some of the most prolific offenses in club history.”

  16. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Once again, Bucs fans are getting fooled by the coaching search. I can’t believe you guys haven’t learned your lesson yet. First you got fooled by all the Sherman/Marty/etc talk for head coach with the Bucs ending up hiring a guy who is completely opposite of those names, and now you’re catatonic over another speculative report in the media regarding the potential OC.

When will you people learn that the Glazers and Dominik always throw decoys out there and never reveal their true intentions with stuff like this? You seriously believe it’ll be Ron f’ing Turner? Really? If so, I’ve got some Everglades property I’d like to sell you. Freaking unbelievable how gullible Bucs fans are. It would be hilarious if it weren’t so sad.

  17. eric Says:

Sure as hell wasnt Don Coryell like at all. That guy was a genius offensively.

Even our great Bucs defense back in the early 80’s couldnt stop Fouts and Coryells offense. A total offensive machine.

Totally off on that comparison. Turner has basically been run out of town everywhere he has been, in the wake of total fan disgust.

About as popular as Raheem Morris is in Tampa in Chi town.

To borrow a Joe phrase I hope we arent close to the unthinkable.

  18. Joe Says:

    eric:

About as popular as Raheem Morris is in Tampa in Chi town.

    Bingo, great analogy!

  19. Joe Says:

Ron Turner is the brother of Norv Turner, and has been the WR coach for the Colts since 2009. Colts WRs havent been too bad since 2009.

And Cooper Manning is Peyton Manning’s brother.

And Ozzie Canseco is Jose Canseco’s brother.

And Jeff Bowden/Jay Paterno are the sons of Bobby Bowden/Joe Paterno.

  20. Macabee Says:

I hope this report is true and the Bucs have not settled for second tier assistants because of money. The overnight buzz is that was the issue with DC candidate, Dan Quinn. I don’t want to further the notion that the Bucs are cheap, but I do recall Joel Glazer saying “we will spend whatever it takes to win this year”.

The term “due diligence” has been used to justify the seemingly long time it’s taking to get a coaching staff in place. If they are doing that, they had to know that Quinn was making 510k, which is about the average NFL salary for an asst. coach. According to a USA Today survey, 22 NFL asst. coaches are making 1mil or more and as late as 2007, the Bucs were paying Monte Kiffen 1.7mil. The top college asst. coaches, in particular the SEC, are all paid in the 850k to 1mil range. Gus Malzan was paid 1.3mil as OC at Auburn before moving on as HC at another university. Due diligence would have revealed this before bringing in a candidate and making an offer.

There are lots of reasons for Quinn to turn down the Bucs offer, but money should not have been the reason. We’ve heard the name Butch Davis for DC. Well Davis was evidently not their 1st choice. We don’t know if money was an issue or even if he was ever a real candidate. I never heard if there was ever an interview. We do know that Davis is still being paid by UNC and his last salary was 1.75mil. I don’t know if college contracts have offsets like NFL contracts. With this latest report, there is still no mention of Davis and given the offer to and refusal by Quinn, it seems unlikely to see him either.

No one knows what script, guidelines, or rules the Glazer team used in their search for asst. coaches. The PR expose’ of a few days ago, which many of you relegated to third world propaganda, may or may not be accurate. But I do know that PR continues to stand by it and no journalist, newspaper, or website has since refuted it.

I’ve stated before that I don’t care who the assistants are or where they come from. This latest unconfirmed report may be a little-known, but competent group of coaches for all I know. But IMHO, extra care should be taken and money should not be an issue in getting the right DC, OC, and QB coach. The rest are U pick’em!

  21. passthebuc Says:

So far this exercise looks like a bad idea gone wrong.

  22. eric Says:

How can that be a “set” staff with no DC, QB coach, DL coach, special teams, o-line etc.

Hopefully FLBoyInDallas is right and this aint the real staff.

Ill be pleased to be fooled again, as I was during the Sherman courtship.

  23. Matthew Says:

No one knows. Coordinators are good in one place terrible in another. Sometimes players make a coach and other times they kill him. We put WAY to much value on position/OC/DC. Schemes are important but philosophy/discipline are only part of the game. It’s execution/talent that win in the NFL. As long as we have competent coaches that don’t let our guys run wild ala Raheem we’ll be fine. Getting all crazy over assistances is ridiculous. The draft & free agency are far more important to our success!

  24. jb Says:

Funny thing is, the scenario we now have before us is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like what we had when Dungy took over this team. Anybody remember him having a problem securing high quality assistants? Christiensen & Mike Shula aside. How about Gruden? This team has fallen so low we have to look Up to look DOWN!

    2-14 in 2012 AT BEST!

  25. bucnation Says:

I’s hopes that one day Joe will stop talking in 3rd person and maybe these articles will actually be interesting. As I read them as such I cant help but imagine you talking as if you were mentally challenged… “Joe’s bones gets chilled abouts this footsball news and Joe hopes its not reals “

  26. bucnation Says:

P.s. no offense btw. Its just an uninteresting way to.deliver news by reading someone refer.to themselves in 3rd person… which is.unfortunate because other then that I enjoy ur articles

  27. Northend Says:

Cignetti not joining us could mean davis will be.didnt davis run cignetti from unc??

  28. eric Says:

I dunno, I think a really good nfl experienced coaching staff is essential, given we hired a guy from Rutgers as head coach with limited NFL experience.

Especially since the entire last coaching staff was jettisoned for sucking.

One of Dungy’s lasting legacies is the coaching staff he assembled, especially Monte. Not sure wed have a SB without Monte Kiffin.

Damned important stuff if you ask me. Especially the guy we choose to work with Josh.

  29. jvato24 Says:

That will be perfect for you jb … Then you bitch/whine/complain the entire season.

Hell you can start a site for you and all the other BWC crew.

    BucFansthatliketobitch.com

  30. jvato24 Says:

I agree in areas .. that it doesnt look so good right now .. But Im not going to freak out before anyone is even hired.

  31. Jared Says:

Dear God, why do Bucs fans panic over the most ridiculous things? Ron Turner, if speculation is true, wouldn’t be the worst hire known to man. He did have some success there. Let’s not forget he never had a premier RB or QB for that matter. Furthermore anyone who can put up decent #’s at QB in Chicago is miraculous. It is like playing at the old Meadowlands there. The ball can’t be thrown without factoring wind velocity and direction first. And that’s only if it is true.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the Bucs looked for an offensive minded HC at a 2nd tier type team in NCAAF to be the OC. Who knows? Either way when the Bucs take the field, I will be cheering for the pewter and red. And jb, 2 – 14 and we haven’t even had a practice yet. You sound special. Not the good kind of special either, I mean the wears a helmet at Wal Mart kind of special.

  32. eric Says:

I thought the consensus around here was the bucs went from 10-6 to 4-12 due to poor coaching.

Now the coaching staff isnt important?

    What?????????????????

  33. stimpy Says:

Whatever coach they decide to go with they need to make it QUICK. The combine is this month. So get your arse together ‘Rock Star’.

  34. gotbbucs Says:

The hopeful/wishful side of me wants to believe that all of these coaches that are supposedly being blocked aren’t in fact being interviewed for a Coordinator job but rather position coach positions worth maybe more money. I really want to believe that some good coaches are already locked up as Coordinators and they’re just trying to put the finishing touches on the staff.
It just seems to me like it’s been way too long for them to still be at square one trying to figure out who the Coordinators are going to be.
Who knows with these .007 operatives that we evidentally have working in our front office.

  35. mark2001 Says:

So we end up with a HC that made a horrible college team somewhat respectable. OK, I’ll keep an open mind. Seems like some talented professional HC’s like him, at least.

Then we talk about bringing in a large percentage of his staff from Rutgers…..now I’m getting pretty uneasy. It’s not like these guys even coached much first rate talent or against much first rate talent….yes, I know about the few guys that went to the NFL.

Are the Glazer boys and Dominik watering on themselves? Just maybe. Joe, I’m not encouraged as of late.

  36. mark2001 Says:

gotbbucs…you don’t mean James Bond, 007 do you?

Maybe Maxwell Smart and agent 99 are more accurate.

    Don’t you know….they have a “cone of silence”. 🙂

  37. Pete Dutcher Says:

    Joe, that was low, lol.

A source told FOXSports.com that Ron Turner and Bill Lazor are among the candidates being considered at offensive coordinator.

Good job stirring up emotions, lol.

People, this “being considered” could have only gone as far as a quick phone interview. Relax.

The Coordinator spots are not filled (yet), but the other spots are getting filled.

Progress. If the report is accurate, then at least 3 more spots are filled. Still a few to go.

  38. Joe Says:

I’s hopes that one day Joe will stop talking in 3rd person and maybe these articles will actually be interesting.

Joe doesn’t believe in ruining a successful business model. You’ve heard the term, “Don’t fix what’s not broken?”

  39. Snook Says:

The fact that Schiano is naming his DC from Rutgers his LB coach here is pretty telling…

    I think Butch is coming…

  40. Joe Says:

    bucnation:

which is.unfortunate because other then that I enjoy ur articles

    Thanks!

  41. Joe Says:

    Pete:

    Progress

    Ron Turner is not progress.

  42. Pete Dutcher Says:

oops, included my comments in the quote!

  43. Jorge Says:

So is there any info on what’s going on with Butch Davis? I need answers Joe!

I’m scouring the “Al Gore’s interwebs” and I can’t seem to find anything

  44. Pete Dutcher Says:

Ron Turner is not signed either.

  45. Josh Says:

All speculation. No jobs have been officially announced…

  46. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

“After being fired by the Chicago Bears…….Turner was hired as offensive coordinator by Stanford. However, four weeks later he became wide receivers coach for the Indianapolis Colts.”

    What’s that all about?

  47. Joe Says:

    Jorge:

So is there any info on what’s going on with Butch Davis? I need answers Joe!

I’m scouring the “Al Gore’s interwebs” and I can’t seem to find anything

Need to brush up on your browsing skills. Over a week ago Peter King reported — and it’s pretty obvious he was getting the information from Greg Schiano — that Butch Davis was atop his wish list as defensive coordinator.

Joe had that information the morning it came out.

  48. Snook Says:

Cignetti to Rams as their QB coach.

Butch booted Cignetti when he was hired as HC at UNC.

Butch is coming to Tampa, folks.

Otherwise, why wouldn’t Cignetti be in Tampa with Schiano?

  49. mark2001 Says:

    Give me a break, boys.

Joe is doing a fine job.

Can you imagine how difficult it must be to write interesting and informative articles about a team and ownership that seems to be constantly defecating on themselves?

Keep up the good work, Joe.

  50. flmike Says:

Please, none of you look up the sky might be falling….

  51. Joe Says:

    Thanks Mark!

  52. Buczilla Says:

Buczilla.cant stand it.when people use crappy punctuation. Dont.these people know.,that commas, periods, and hyphens all have. a role???

I am not looking for perfection people, but sometimes reading some of these posts hurts Buczilla’s face! Oh and in case you haven’t figured it out, I am a big fan of Joe talking in the third person (and I promise never to do it again – that is Joe’s gimmick).

P.S. – Please type like a grown up or others’ opinion of your opinion may drop sharply

P.P.S. – Lolcats or Texts from Last Night would be glad to have you post all the gibberish you can muster!

  53. buddah Says:

Lazor is a heck of a coach and is ready for this move. Listen to some of his news conferences on youtube. He’s worked under some of the best and he turned around the Virginia offense in one season. He’s young and energetic and is a graduate of Cornell. I like him a lot.

  54. BucFan20 Says:

The key word was AMONG!! So that was 2 out of how many??

  55. Snook Says:

Don’t know much about Lazor but I see he’s worked under Dan Reeves, Joe Gibbs and Mike Holmren.

  56. Pete Dutcher Says:

I don’t believe the OC is either one of those guys. I’ve heard no specific names, but the impression I got was that the OC would be a better known name.

Unless, of course, it fell through.

Options are getting sparse though. Teams are refusing to allow their guys to be interviewed. I still think the Bucs need to call Bellichek and get our OC from there. I understand the QB coach was in line for a promotion but they brought in someone instead?

Bill made a recommendation. Dom could guilt him into letter the QB coach go 😉

  57. eric Says:

    Oh it does say “among”.

    Never mind…………….

  58. Name Required Says:

Wouldn’t they have announced Butch by now?

  59. stevek Says:

Glazers, you better pay up and get us a good staff.

    No more low balling!

Sell the stinking team if you are going to continue your love affair with Soccer.

I heard you guys signed Koenan last year just to use his services for Manchester U.

You all need to stop stinking up the Bay Area.

  60. FreemanBomb5 Says:

Dominik isn’t guilting Belicheat into anything, especially after losing the Super Bowl. Dominik is probably the LEAST respected GM by his peers. Horrible drafting, talent evaluation, use of salary cap, and he can’t even pick coaches worth a lick.

  61. mark2001 Says:

Someone currenty on the radio is speculating the reason we aren’t signing good coaches, particularly the ones currently in college, is probably because of MONEY?

What a shock…..to think I would live to see the day when Glazer and Money(or should I say lack of spending) would be used in the same sentence.

  62. Bobby Says:

Yep, and Marty and Sherman & Phillips etc. were being considered for the HC job. That evoked the same kind of whiny response. Maybe we should just wait for an ‘actual announcement’ or would that take away all the fun of bitching about something that hasn’t happened??

  63. Dave Says:

I think the Patriots and the Colts and the Cowboys in the 1990’s and many others along the way have shown us one thing:

You need a good, discipline oriented, organized HC and a stud QB.

If you have those things, everything else can fall into place.

  64. Jorge Says:

Joe…I knew that much about him being atop the list…But after that was reported nothing else has come out about it… and yesterday the DC From gators thing…just wondering if you had heard anything new?

  65. bUcNcrAzy Says:

Turner was recommended By D.Vermeil for what its worth. If it doesnt work out we can always fire him right before the season starts!Where is Jagz at these days?
Any way hope we do a better job in free agency 🙁

  66. Macabee Says:

Joe, there is a disconnect, at least for me there is.

    (1) Peter King reports that Butch Davis is at the top of Schianos list for DC
and Joe reported it the same morning.
    (2) Dominik said Schiano would pick his own staff.
    (3) Dan Quinn was made the first reported offer for DC and he refused.
    (4) The reported offer was not made to Butch Davis.

What is wrong with my logic?

    (1) Schiano made the offer to Quinn, therefore Davis was never his first
    choice.
    (2) Dominik picked Quinn, therefore Schiano is not picking his own staff.
    (3) Davis was Schianos first choice but Davis wasn’t interested so Quinn
    was offered the job.
    (4) Davis was interested and he was Schianos first choice, but the deal
    could not be made.

    Can you clarify?

  67. HolyBuc Says:

Of course coordinators have been paid cheap salaries the past three years. How much was the Head Coach making during this time? I know he made 2 m last year and that was a raise over the past two years.

How do you pay a lot of money to coordinators when your HC is on the cheap?

If I was assistant coach these days give me a 1 year deal in case I have opportunity to advance my career or move to staff I feel more comfortable with.

  68. Joe Says:

    Macabee:

Can’t clarify as you can imagine this is very fluid. Perhaps Davis turned down Schiano? Perhaps Davis is still in play. Joe was under the impression Quinn would have been a defensive line coach.

Notice no one is speaking on the record about any of this.

The only thing that should concern scare you is that Ron Turner’s name is invoked. Other than that, it’s not worth getting to worried about.

  69. Joe Says:

    Jorge:

Joe…I knew that much about him being atop the list…But after that was reported nothing else has come out about it… and yesterday the DC From gators thing…just wondering if you had heard anything new?

Nothing more than anyone else does. Notice no one is speaking on the record about any of this?

  70. Joe Says:

    mark:

Someone is speculating the reason we aren’t signing good coaches, particularly the ones currently in college, is probably because of MONEY?

Well, Quinn is pulling in $500,000 a year at Florida. Would you leave for a job that may pay less and may have less job security?

Quinn does a decent to good job at Florida, he will be in line for an SEC head coaching gig which is worth millions a year.

Joe can’t blame Quinn for staying.

  71. Jared Says:

Yasinskas wrote that Quinn was up for DL coach not DC.

  72. Brown Bag Likes Butch and Marty Says:

So is this the latest rope-a-dope from the Bucs as they negotiate with MArty and Butch? Do they think they are as skilled as Drew Rosenhaus in negotiations? PErhaps Drew should be our GM.

Give Butch Schottenheimer or Marty Davis ASAP! (HA)

  73. stevek Says:

    Glazers, show them the money!

  74. Rob In Orlando Says:

As long as Coach Schiano assembles a staff that can teach and motivate our Buccaneers, I don’t care where he gets the coaches. Have some faith and trust his decisions until his way is proven wrong. Anyone who thinks this rebuilding project will instantly create a playoff team in 2012 is well, not wrapped real tight. If we go 8-8 this year, that will be a huge accomplishment and merit Schiano for coach of the year. I just want a disciplined team that gives 100% effort all the time. As Buc fans last year, we were all cheated and disgusted at the epic meltdown we witnessed. I believe we have stumbled on another diamond in the rough with Shiano, and I don’t like the Cheapsters one bit. I just want to see big money spent on experienced free agents who will truly make a difference. Remember Hardy Nickerson and what a difference he made to our defense? Go Bucs!

  75. Macabee Says:

Jared, you decide! Go to Bucs Beat and read TBT report on the offer. I provided a link to PFT also if you care to read.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/06/report-bucs-turned-down-by-florida-defensive-coordinator-quinn/

  76. jvato24 Says:

Cignetti going to the Rams makes me think Butch Davis is on board as DC.

  77. eric Says:

Reports say Turner and Lazor are gonna interview, so this thing may drag on for awhile.

  78. Jared Says:

Macabee all I said was Yasinskas said it was for DL coach and his article is newer. Doesn’t make it accurate. But I’ll take Joe’s opinion as well as beer swilling, oatmeal chugging, fried chicken slurping, coffee crushing, Peter King’s opinion over a Gator’s beat writer from whatever the hell they have up in BFE Gainesville any day of the week. And they both pointed to Davis as #1 choice. Doesn’t mean it will happen, but I think it all adds up that Quinn was offered DL coach.

  79. stevek Says:

    BBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

C’mon, man! Get ur @$$ to TAMPA.

  80. Jared Says:

    Bruce?

  81. Patrick Says:

Seems like we’re gonna end up with some [and you wonder why this went to spam??? — Joe] staff. Our organization is one of the most “unorganized” and stupidest in the NFL. Wait, wait, wait longer…….combine is in 2 weeks and we only have a WR’s coach with little coaching experience at any level.

Hire a f’kn coaching staff. And it better be a good one!

Really……if we’re gonna hire Turner, why the hell did we fire Olsen?

Lazor? Why? Never did anything in WSH or SEA as a QB coach. Also…..another college coach!

Hue Jackson is a much better option than these guys, I don’t know how some of you can’t see that. How are we not interviewing him? He’s out there right now.

Butch Davis has 2 super bowl rings and is VERY qualified.

    Hire those two!

  82. Patrick Says:

Wow, I just typed a long @ss comment and it didn’t show up on here. WTF.

  83. Jared Says:

There are buzzwords that will not be posted.

  84. Jared Says:

Especially if you mention the names of certain radio personalities, then your comment will not be posted.

  85. Patrick Says:

Really……if we’re going to hire Turner, why the hell did we fire Olsen?

Lazor? Why?! Never did anything as a QB coach for the Redskins or Seahawks. Two years as an OC for Virginia? Again……another college coach!

Hue Jackson is the obvious best choice out there, and I don’t know why many of you don’t see that. Much more qualified and proven than all these losers that keep coming up. Why have I not heard his name in the mix?

Butch Davis has a super bowl ring and a track record of success in BOTH NFL and college. Enough said. He’s very qualified and has the experience we need for DC.

Hire these two already and be done with it! I guarantee we don’t see the pathetic football we did last year with them here!

  86. Joe Says:

    Patrick:

. Two years as an OC for Virginia?

Pretty impressive what he has done there.

  87. Bucnnole Says:

    Isn’t Les Steckel still around????

  88. Jared Says:

Why does everyone keep calling for hiring Hue Jackson? Just because people know his name? Count me out. I wouldn’t hate it if they hire him, but there are some very respectable football minds out there that basiclly say the guy is very difficult to deal with and a control freak. I don’t think Schiano needs aguy like that starting out his NFL Career.

  89. Patrick Says:

    @Joe

Never proved himself as a QB coach in Washington and Seattle.

Maybe he’s done well at Virginia. But that’s college.

Do we want an ENTIRE college staff? I don’t see how that’d be better than hiring Jackson, who’s proven he’s had some success at the NFL level.

  90. Patrick Says:

Al Saunders would be a good option too. He was on Vermeils Super bowl winning staff and had the NFL’s best offense with the Chiefs from ’02-’05.

He HAS been fired a couple times since then, but only got the boot in Washington because Joe Gibbs retired.

Spent one year in STL before getting fired, but c’mon STL has been a mess for quite a while.

Did a good job in Oakland last year, but for some reason got fired along with Hue Jackson.

LOTS of experience. Comes from the Marty coaching tree too.

  91. Brad Says:

How does a guy I never heard of have the inside scoop over anyone else.. I’ll believe who it is and what it is when I hear from Schiano.

  92. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

Hopefully this report isn’t true, so I’ll wait before commenting.
But right now, it like having an antique car, that you have loved and kept for 30 years- the watching a bunch of kids come in the garage, tear it to he’ll, and spray graffitti all over it!

It’s beyond bad and cheap . It almost feels criminal

  93. Bulldog Says:

    Violated

  94. Joe Says:

    Don’t be dumb.

    Patrick:

Never proved himself as a QB coach in Washington and Seattle.

To be fair, didn’t Hasslebeck have his best years with him as a quarterback coach?

  97. Cmurda Says:

Look, you have to let it reveal itself before we go nuts. Think back to the Gruden trade/hire. I remember the Bucs board filled with excitement at the Chucky possibility. But then when everyone learned of what we gave up there was despair. A lot of whining happened then and a lot will happen now. Justifiably so. The bottom line is Gruden was a great hire despite mortgaging our future simply because we won the Superbowl. He was a great hire because it was exactly what we needed. Passion, excitement, motivation to take us over the top. Well, Schiano is a great hire because he is exactly what we need right now. Discipline, accountability, reliability. I personally feel the staff is overrated. A great coach would win with my 3 year old as the offensive and defensive coordinator. Bill Belichick raves about Schiano. RAVES. Bill is clearly a great coach. Case in point for my stance is think of Bill’s assistants. Many have gone on and most have and continue to suck royal ass. You want to have good coordinators but lets settle down here.

  98. CC Says:

    Desecraded

  99. Macabee Says:

Interesting that Jeff Fisher would put Sam Bradford in the hands of Frank Cignetti, but last worked for Schiano and evidently wasn’t asked to mentor Josh Freeman or was he and refused?

  100. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

    Yeah, all the above.
Everyone thinks I’ve turned into a hater. I havent.

I’m damn near heartbroken to see this once proud franchise continue to go cheap, instead of hiring the Best, most qualified people!

Violated was a good word for it

  103. Garv Says:

I think the “experts” and message board poster should pick Schiano’s staff.
It’s none of his business and furthermore, some of us have been posting on message boards for YEARS!

I happen to have a subscription to Sports Illustrated and once was a Pewter Report insider……….God know’s I’M qualified.

  104. Northend Says:

Lazor was 2nd in the head coach race at Cornell 2 years ago, thought he was going to get it.Very respected among his peers, has a creative view of offensive play calling and would do a solid job with free if given the chance

  105. CC Says:

    Pummeled

  106. BigMacAttack Says:

I can only think of one man with the backbone, strength and ability to turn this offense around and become the best Offensive Coordinator ever in the history of the NFL…….. and that man is………… Chuck Norris.

  115. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

CC-lol – I think the Unknown Comic was Really- Raheem Morris

  116. Mark Says:

    Larry Coker for OC

  117. CC Says:

Nah, he was Gene Gene The Dancin Machine

  118. Patrick Says:

    @Mark

Larry Coker is the HC at UTSA.

    Chuck Norris doesn’t take bathes…

…water just likes to be around him.

  120. Pete Dutcher Says:

Watch a bunch of losers, lol.

  121. HolyBuc Says:

    Hey Pete,

Does your source have any update for you?

  122. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

The sun rises in the east. Because Chuck Norris told it to!

  123. eric Says:

How about the Rock (the moviestar not our GM).

He played ball and look what a good job he did with that prison team.

I always figured GM’s had contacts with a bunch of coachs to quickly assemble a staff. Whats up with Rock? (the GM not the movie star).

  124. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

Pete- “watch a bunch of losers”
Ok, I’m watching some look for a coaching staff right now. Can’t see the rest til preseason, when they start trying to coach! Lol

Our Defense could stop the run, if Chuck Norris told them to!

    Bout the only way

  125. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

The Rock has more Football experience than most of the coaches they are pursuing- he played LBer at the U of Miami!

And if a RB starts to get to many yards on us, The Rock could “lay the smackdown on his Rudy poo, candy Ass!!!”

  126. eric Says:

Actually I think Rah was the kid that mumbled a lot on the Fat Albert Cartoon.

I remember the episode where his uncles totally kicked his ass.

Nah, that guy was a better football coach than rah, even as a cartoon character.

    Hey, Hey, Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  127. Mark Says:

Coker may be HC at UTSA but that is a low level Division II college program. If Coker ever wants to get back in the limelight he needs to get more exposure and a OC in the NFL could work for him. Just something to think about and he’s probably a better hire than either Turner or Lazur. Just food for thought

  128. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

You guys can throw out all the names you want. But if they won’t work for a rock bottom contract- they ain’t coming!

Expect more Flecks and the like. No experience. Willing to work for nothing to get in the NFL( well, almost!).

Or do you believe we hired a 32 year old with no experience, because he was the best qualIfied guy for the job. He was almost OC at Northern Illinois U.
He should be able to get our young WRs ( who all have more NFL time than Fleck!) ready to face the Darrell Revis of the NFL!

Look out Giants and Patriots- we stole fleck right from under yer noses.

Gotta make us SuperBowl favorites in Vegas!!

Alright Eric. Are you starting to see it yet?

  129. BigMacAttack Says:

    Chuck Norris is Raheem’s Uncle.

  130. Hudbud Says:

I just read on a UVa sports site that UV head coach Mike London has reportedly told the Daily Progress’s Jerry Ratcliffe that Bill Lazor is no longer a candidate for the job with Tampa Bay. If this is indeed true based on what we are hearing today Joe’s nightmare may be a done deal to be announced soon. The hiring of Turner as our OC. Yikes!!!

  131. eric Says:

    captain

i am engaging in a willing suspensión of disbelief.

cant face reality cause its toó damn sad.

  132. Bulldog Says:

I am NOT hating,,,,I’m just DISBELIEVING. At least I was. The glazer girls have now just pushed me back to the 70’s..I now know I can go into any airport , or have some of my customers start talking sports and just wait for the jokes about the yuks to start. Only this time I won’t be defending them. I’ve got nothing to work with.

    go bucs ,,sigh

  133. chargedcbh Says:

This team better win the Super Bowl or the Glazers will have to sell this team and get out of town!!!!!!
This makes NO SENSE at all…….
