Report: Schiano Staff Nearly Complete

Alex Marvez, who is a very-well-plugged-in NFL type who writes for FoxSports.com and works for SiriusXM NFL Radio, just posted a report that new Bucs coach Greg Schiano has his staff just about set.
A source told FOXSports.com that Ron Turner and Bill Lazor are among the candidates being considered at offensive coordinator. Schiano also will be adding three of his former staff members at Rutgers University — Bob Fraser (linebackers), Brian Angelichio (tight ends) and Jeff Haley (assistant defensive backs coach).
This frightens Joe to his very bones. Ron Turner is a horrible quarterback coach and has — at best — an underwhelming resume as an offensive coordinator. Unless a guy’s name is “Mike Martz,” why in the world would anyone want a jettisoned Bears quarterback coach?
Currently, Turner’s career highlight is developing Kurt Kittner.
Oh, and he got run from Illinois for having a putrid offense as well.
Joe is crossing his fingers this report is inaccurate, if for no other reason than for Josh Freeman’s career.

Ron Turner is the brother of Norv Turner, and has been the WR coach for the Colts since 2009. Colts WRs havent been too bad since 2009.

Turner was decent in his first stint as OC at Chicago. It got him the head coaching gig at Illinois, which started well, he got to double digit wins one year, then the team stunk for the past few seasons he was there. His last season in Chicago he was fired and replaced with Mike Martz. He was the OC for Chicago during their Super Bowl year… with Rex Grossman as a starter… which could mean he’s a miracle worker.
The type of offenses he runs are the Joe Gibbs/Don Coryell style that Norv Turner, Martz, and … I can’t remember the other guy right now… use. Which means they like to run the ball and push the ball down the field with deep passes.
Bill Lazor is more of a WCO type guy (though he coached under Gibbs far longer). He also likes to run the ball and quite honestly, he worked wonders last season at UVa with a woefully overmatched Cavalier offense. The QB this past season was horrible to start the season (Michael Rocco) and helped turn him into a strength by the end. Again, he does like to run the ball as well, recently with a 3-pronged attack (Perry Jones, Kevin Parks, Clifton Richardson).

Joe can assure you as he grew up watching the Coryell-led St. Louis Cardinals and then watching years later the Air Coryell Chargers, not only was Ron Turner’s offense the polar opposite of Coryell, shoot, Coryell didn’t even like to run the ball.
Comparing Ron Turner to Don Coryell is like comparing Paul Johnson to Steve Spurrier.

Once again, Bucs fans are getting fooled by the coaching search. I can’t believe you guys haven’t learned your lesson yet. First you got fooled by all the Sherman/Marty/etc talk for head coach with the Bucs ending up hiring a guy who is completely opposite of those names, and now you’re catatonic over another speculative report in the media regarding the potential OC.
When will you people learn that the Glazers and Dominik always throw decoys out there and never reveal their true intentions with stuff like this? You seriously believe it’ll be Ron f’ing Turner? Really? If so, I’ve got some Everglades property I’d like to sell you. Freaking unbelievable how gullible Bucs fans are. It would be hilarious if it weren’t so sad.

Sure as hell wasnt Don Coryell like at all. That guy was a genius offensively.
Even our great Bucs defense back in the early 80’s couldnt stop Fouts and Coryells offense. A total offensive machine.
Totally off on that comparison. Turner has basically been run out of town everywhere he has been, in the wake of total fan disgust.
About as popular as Raheem Morris is in Tampa in Chi town.
To borrow a Joe phrase I hope we arent close to the unthinkable.

I hope this report is true and the Bucs have not settled for second tier assistants because of money. The overnight buzz is that was the issue with DC candidate, Dan Quinn. I don’t want to further the notion that the Bucs are cheap, but I do recall Joel Glazer saying “we will spend whatever it takes to win this year”.
The term “due diligence” has been used to justify the seemingly long time it’s taking to get a coaching staff in place. If they are doing that, they had to know that Quinn was making 510k, which is about the average NFL salary for an asst. coach. According to a USA Today survey, 22 NFL asst. coaches are making 1mil or more and as late as 2007, the Bucs were paying Monte Kiffen 1.7mil. The top college asst. coaches, in particular the SEC, are all paid in the 850k to 1mil range. Gus Malzan was paid 1.3mil as OC at Auburn before moving on as HC at another university. Due diligence would have revealed this before bringing in a candidate and making an offer.
There are lots of reasons for Quinn to turn down the Bucs offer, but money should not have been the reason. We’ve heard the name Butch Davis for DC. Well Davis was evidently not their 1st choice. We don’t know if money was an issue or even if he was ever a real candidate. I never heard if there was ever an interview. We do know that Davis is still being paid by UNC and his last salary was 1.75mil. I don’t know if college contracts have offsets like NFL contracts. With this latest report, there is still no mention of Davis and given the offer to and refusal by Quinn, it seems unlikely to see him either.
No one knows what script, guidelines, or rules the Glazer team used in their search for asst. coaches. The PR expose’ of a few days ago, which many of you relegated to third world propaganda, may or may not be accurate. But I do know that PR continues to stand by it and no journalist, newspaper, or website has since refuted it.
I’ve stated before that I don’t care who the assistants are or where they come from. This latest unconfirmed report may be a little-known, but competent group of coaches for all I know. But IMHO, extra care should be taken and money should not be an issue in getting the right DC, OC, and QB coach. The rest are U pick’em!

No one knows. Coordinators are good in one place terrible in another. Sometimes players make a coach and other times they kill him. We put WAY to much value on position/OC/DC. Schemes are important but philosophy/discipline are only part of the game. It’s execution/talent that win in the NFL. As long as we have competent coaches that don’t let our guys run wild ala Raheem we’ll be fine. Getting all crazy over assistances is ridiculous. The draft & free agency are far more important to our success!

Funny thing is, the scenario we now have before us is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like what we had when Dungy took over this team. Anybody remember him having a problem securing high quality assistants? Christiensen & Mike Shula aside. How about Gruden? This team has fallen so low we have to look Up to look DOWN!

I dunno, I think a really good nfl experienced coaching staff is essential, given we hired a guy from Rutgers as head coach with limited NFL experience.
Especially since the entire last coaching staff was jettisoned for sucking.
One of Dungy’s lasting legacies is the coaching staff he assembled, especially Monte. Not sure wed have a SB without Monte Kiffin.
Damned important stuff if you ask me. Especially the guy we choose to work with Josh.

Dear God, why do Bucs fans panic over the most ridiculous things? Ron Turner, if speculation is true, wouldn’t be the worst hire known to man. He did have some success there. Let’s not forget he never had a premier RB or QB for that matter. Furthermore anyone who can put up decent #’s at QB in Chicago is miraculous. It is like playing at the old Meadowlands there. The ball can’t be thrown without factoring wind velocity and direction first. And that’s only if it is true.
I wouldn’t be shocked if the Bucs looked for an offensive minded HC at a 2nd tier type team in NCAAF to be the OC. Who knows? Either way when the Bucs take the field, I will be cheering for the pewter and red. And jb, 2 – 14 and we haven’t even had a practice yet. You sound special. Not the good kind of special either, I mean the wears a helmet at Wal Mart kind of special.

The hopeful/wishful side of me wants to believe that all of these coaches that are supposedly being blocked aren’t in fact being interviewed for a Coordinator job but rather position coach positions worth maybe more money. I really want to believe that some good coaches are already locked up as Coordinators and they’re just trying to put the finishing touches on the staff.
It just seems to me like it’s been way too long for them to still be at square one trying to figure out who the Coordinators are going to be.
Who knows with these .007 operatives that we evidentally have working in our front office.

So we end up with a HC that made a horrible college team somewhat respectable. OK, I’ll keep an open mind. Seems like some talented professional HC’s like him, at least.
Then we talk about bringing in a large percentage of his staff from Rutgers…..now I’m getting pretty uneasy. It’s not like these guys even coached much first rate talent or against much first rate talent….yes, I know about the few guys that went to the NFL.
Are the Glazer boys and Dominik watering on themselves? Just maybe. Joe, I’m not encouraged as of late.

Lazor is a heck of a coach and is ready for this move. Listen to some of his news conferences on youtube. He’s worked under some of the best and he turned around the Virginia offense in one season. He’s young and energetic and is a graduate of Cornell. I like him a lot.

I don’t believe the OC is either one of those guys. I’ve heard no specific names, but the impression I got was that the OC would be a better known name.
Unless, of course, it fell through.
Options are getting sparse though. Teams are refusing to allow their guys to be interviewed. I still think the Bucs need to call Bellichek and get our OC from there. I understand the QB coach was in line for a promotion but they brought in someone instead?
Bill made a recommendation. Dom could guilt him into letter the QB coach go 😉

I think the Patriots and the Colts and the Cowboys in the 1990’s and many others along the way have shown us one thing:
You need a good, discipline oriented, organized HC and a stud QB.

Joe, there is a disconnect, at least for me there is.
(1) Peter King reports that Butch Davis is at the top of Schianos list for DC
and Joe reported it the same morning.
(2) Dominik said Schiano would pick his own staff.
(3) Dan Quinn was made the first reported offer for DC and he refused.
(4) The reported offer was not made to Butch Davis.
What is wrong with my logic?
(1) Schiano made the offer to Quinn, therefore Davis was never his first
choice.
(2) Dominik picked Quinn, therefore Schiano is not picking his own staff.
(3) Davis was Schianos first choice but Davis wasn’t interested so Quinn
was offered the job.
(4) Davis was interested and he was Schianos first choice, but the deal
could not be made.

Of course coordinators have been paid cheap salaries the past three years. How much was the Head Coach making during this time? I know he made 2 m last year and that was a raise over the past two years.
How do you pay a lot of money to coordinators when your HC is on the cheap?
If I was assistant coach these days give me a 1 year deal in case I have opportunity to advance my career or move to staff I feel more comfortable with.

Can’t clarify as you can imagine this is very fluid. Perhaps Davis turned down Schiano? Perhaps Davis is still in play. Joe was under the impression Quinn would have been a defensive line coach.

Well, Quinn is pulling in $500,000 a year at Florida. Would you leave for a job that may pay less and may have less job security?
Quinn does a decent to good job at Florida, he will be in line for an SEC head coaching gig which is worth millions a year.
Joe can’t blame Quinn for staying.

As long as Coach Schiano assembles a staff that can teach and motivate our Buccaneers, I don’t care where he gets the coaches. Have some faith and trust his decisions until his way is proven wrong. Anyone who thinks this rebuilding project will instantly create a playoff team in 2012 is well, not wrapped real tight. If we go 8-8 this year, that will be a huge accomplishment and merit Schiano for coach of the year. I just want a disciplined team that gives 100% effort all the time. As Buc fans last year, we were all cheated and disgusted at the epic meltdown we witnessed. I believe we have stumbled on another diamond in the rough with Shiano, and I don’t like the Cheapsters one bit. I just want to see big money spent on experienced free agents who will truly make a difference. Remember Hardy Nickerson and what a difference he made to our defense? Go Bucs!

But I’ll take Joe’s opinion as well as beer swilling, oatmeal chugging, fried chicken slurping, coffee crushing, Peter King’s opinion over a Gator’s beat writer from whatever the hell they have up in BFE Gainesville any day of the week. And they both pointed to Davis as #1 choice. Doesn’t mean it will happen, but I think it all adds up that Quinn was offered DL coach.

Butch Davis has a super bowl ring and a track record of success in BOTH NFL and college. Enough said. He’s very qualified and has the experience we need for DC.
Hire these two already and be done with it! I guarantee we don’t see the pathetic football we did last year with them here!

Why does everyone keep calling for hiring Hue Jackson? Just because people know his name? Count me out. I wouldn’t hate it if they hire him, but there are some very respectable football minds out there that basiclly say the guy is very difficult to deal with and a control freak. I don’t think Schiano needs aguy like that starting out his NFL Career.

Never proved himself as a QB coach in Washington and Seattle.
Maybe he’s done well at Virginia. But that’s college.
Do we want an ENTIRE college staff? I don’t see how that’d be better than hiring Jackson, who’s proven he’s had some success at the NFL level.

Al Saunders would be a good option too. He was on Vermeils Super bowl winning staff and had the NFL’s best offense with the Chiefs from ’02-’05.
He HAS been fired a couple times since then, but only got the boot in Washington because Joe Gibbs retired.
Spent one year in STL before getting fired, but c’mon STL has been a mess for quite a while.
Did a good job in Oakland last year, but for some reason got fired along with Hue Jackson.
LOTS of experience. Comes from the Marty coaching tree too.

Hopefully this report isn’t true, so I’ll wait before commenting.
But right now, it like having an antique car, that you have loved and kept for 30 years- the watching a bunch of kids come in the garage, tear it to he’ll, and spray graffitti all over it!

Look, you have to let it reveal itself before we go nuts. Think back to the Gruden trade/hire. I remember the Bucs board filled with excitement at the Chucky possibility. But then when everyone learned of what we gave up there was despair. A lot of whining happened then and a lot will happen now. Justifiably so. The bottom line is Gruden was a great hire despite mortgaging our future simply because we won the Superbowl. He was a great hire because it was exactly what we needed. Passion, excitement, motivation to take us over the top. Well, Schiano is a great hire because he is exactly what we need right now. Discipline, accountability, reliability. I personally feel the staff is overrated. A great coach would win with my 3 year old as the offensive and defensive coordinator. Bill Belichick raves about Schiano. RAVES. Bill is clearly a great coach. Case in point for my stance is think of Bill’s assistants. Many have gone on and most have and continue to suck royal ass. You want to have good coordinators but lets settle down here.

Lazor was 2nd in the head coach race at Cornell 2 years ago, thought he was going to get it.Very respected among his peers,has a creative view of offensive play calling and would do a solid job with free if given the chance

Coker may be HC at UTSA but that is a low level Division II college program. If Coker ever wants to get back in the limelight he needs to get more exposure and a OC in the NFL could work for him. Just something to think about and he’s probably a better hire than either Turner or Lazur. Just food for thought

You guys can throw out all the names you want. But if they won’t work for a rock bottom contract- they ain’t coming!
Expect more Flecks and the like. No experience. Willing to work for nothing to get in the NFL( well, almost!).
Or do you believe we hired a 32 year old with no experience, because he was the best qualIfied guy for the job. He was almost OC at Northern Illinois U.
He should be able to get our young WRs ( who all have more NFL time than Fleck!) ready to face the Darrell Revis of the NFL!

I just read on a UVa sports site that UV head coach Mike London has reportedly told the Daily Progress’s Jerry Ratcliffe that Bill Lazor is no longer a candidate for the job with Tampa Bay. If this is indeed true based on what we are hearing today Joe’s nightmare may be a done deal to be announced soon. The hiring of Turner as our OC. Yikes!!!
