Chris “Mad Dog” Russo Talks To Joe
February 3rd, 2012Legendary sports radio host Chris Russo is never at a loss for words. So when Joe had the rare opportunity to talk to the “Mad Dog” Tuesday while Joe prowled Radio Row at the Super Bowl Media Center at the J.W. Marriott in Indianapolis, of course Joe asked Russo his thoughts on the Bucs signing Greg Schiano to be the ninth coach in Bucs franchise history. Russo, who anchors the channel that bears his name, “Mad Dog Radio,” can be heard on “Mad Dog Unleashed” exclusively on SiriusXM Radio weekdays from 2-7 p.m.
JoeBucsFan: Chris, your thoughts on the Bucs hiring Greg Schiano as their new coach.
Chris Russo: A good move by Tampa. Schiano is a good defensive coach. Belichick gave him an endorsement. Schiano was trying to leave Rutgers and I think that’s a good move by Schiano and a really good hire by the Bucs, I like that one.
Joe: Some Bucs fans are apprehensive because Schiano has only scant experience coaching in the NFL.
Russo: I can understand that. I can see that as he only has NFL experience as a defensive back coach. But if Belichick gives you his approval, he knows what he is doing. Belichick made a great point: all Rutgers players that are drafted to play in the NFL are ready to play in the league. He’s a good defensive coach, I think he will do a good job in Tampa. I’m pretty convinced of it.

If there’s one thing I think of when I see that picture it’s “Mad Dog.”

Man I will be happy when we actually have some damn Buc news. I thought the search for the head coach was frustrating. What in the hell is the hold up? I don’t get it.

“Schiano was trying to leave Rutgers”…funny, I thought we lured him away.

I’m excited about our upcoming defensive changes. From what I understand, Schiano will be an “in the quarterbacks face” type of guy, blitzing like crazy with as many positions as possible.
Big time physical play…hard hitting like the 3-4 defenses tend to be, but in a 4-3 scheme.
Remember when Tony and Monte built the Tampa 2? I suspect we’re about to see Schiano build a new Tampa scheme. Can’t wait to see the new nickname of it 🙂
Even better, can’t wait until I see it in full glory.
A quote from a local rag: (Times)
“(Rutgers blitzes) safeties, cornerbacks, linebackers, you name it,” Hackett said. “(Schiano) has been around the league enough to know that if you pressure the quarterback, you have a chance to win. And I bet he’ll ramp it up even more with more time to work with players in the NFL.”

@ Pete. Me too. I like Schiano Paisano’s demeanor during all of this. This man knows what he is doing. I’m beyond fine if Cignetti is named OC. 2 Paisans is better than one.

@BKNY Oh boy….

I’m hoping that he’s just together enough to secretly get all the coaching hires done and next week we’ll have an announcement all at once. It would be a pretty bold move.

I’m still warming up to Schiano but reserve full opinion until h hires the rest of his staff and we see what he does during OTA’s to get these guys back on track. Simply saying Belicheat likes him is bullspit. Didn’t Belecheat endorse McDaniels? That was a nightmare for Denver so I cannot put too much stock into Belecheats endorsements. Go Bucs!
