Sherman Impressed, Could Join Bucs This Week
January 8th, 2012Who could question NFL.com senior writer Jason La Canfora’s sources? The man works for the mother ship, for goodness sakes.
So Joe paid close attention this afternoon when La Canfora wrote that former Packers head coach Mike Sherman impressed during his interview with Team Glazer and rockstar general manager Mark Dominik last week and could be named to lead the Bucs in a matter of hours.
League sources continue to indicate that Mike Sherman is well-positioned to be named the next head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a decision that could be announced this week.
Sherman interviewed for the position last week , and it went well, according to sources.
Sherman went 57-39 in six seasons in Green Bay from 2000 to 2005 and led the Packers to three NFC North titles. He was fired after posting a 4-12 season in 2005.
Of course, BSPN is reporting the Bucs still have other candidates, like Marty Chokenheimer, to consider. But perhaps Sherman already has wowed his way into the job.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:51 pm
He’s a good coach but I would like someone different
January 8th, 2012 at 2:51 pm
ya, that’ll sell some tickets….
January 8th, 2012 at 2:53 pm
What’s this about Marty, Brad Childress and a bunch of others being interviewed this week?
January 8th, 2012 at 2:53 pm
I know this is petty but I have trouble getting over the Clifton incident. If we hire him I’ll just take consolation in the fact he stands up for his players.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:54 pm
Nevermind, just noticed you gave him a nickname…cute. You’re known for handing those out.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:54 pm
Bisaccia!
January 8th, 2012 at 2:55 pm
Impressed with a PHAT paycheck and a steady check after he is let go by the new ownership…..
January 8th, 2012 at 2:55 pm
Joe and readers,
So if u read Joe above, u see that they MAY be hiring a coach with the same record he had in his last season as Coach Rah got FIRED with! It’s SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY HOW THE WORLD OF PRO SPORTS WORKS!?!?!?!?!?!?!
January 8th, 2012 at 2:58 pm
I find this hard to believe. A guy just fired from a college team, out of the NFL for years comes here now?
Maybe he DID impress, but impress who? Not sure this will sell tickets so at least that’s not the only motive.
Want to hear more about Sherman.
January 8th, 2012 at 2:59 pm
A hire like that will add to the mass exodus of the fan base. What a mediocre and uninspiring choice that would be.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:01 pm
At least they’re interview one rising coordinator…….Mike Zimmer.
Wade Philips won a lot in Dallas, but was up and down for most of his tenure there:
2007: 13-3, lost first round bye divisional game
2008: 9-7, missed playoffs by one game
2009: 11-5, won wild card game vs. Eagles, lost divisional game
2010: disaster of a season. started out 1-7 and got fired midway through season.
But I’ve always liked Wade Philips and think he’s a good guy.
However, he’s kind of soft. He’s too much of a nice guy and not what I would call a disciplinarian.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:01 pm
I really believe if Marty gets a fair interview, he’ll get as much consideration, maybe more.
Also believe the fans would be more receptive.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:02 pm
Brian Billick.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:03 pm
I do not believe the Glazers plan to own this franchise much longer
January 8th, 2012 at 3:03 pm
Wade Phillips as the DC.

Childress could join Bucs’ staff as offensive coordinator

Former Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress will interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a coaching position Monday, according to a league source.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:04 pm
Billick would be better received by fans as well IMO.
NOT sure that should be the end all though.
Sherman provides zzzz right now, hopefully we can get behind him later if he’s the guy.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:05 pm
Impressive interviews are one thing, results on the field are another. Sherman’s results are pretty middle of the road.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
Better than Morris but nothing I can get excited about on the surface. A lot would depend on the staff he would bring with him.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
I wouldn’t be upset with the hire, but I’m not sure I’m buying this. Sherman was average in the NFL, and bad in college….why bring him in after being fired? Joel Glazer said this search would be “exhaustive;” is interviewing Sherman and Gray an “exhaustive” search? Considering they have several names lined up for this week I question this report.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
sorry jake
It’s easier for me to get into the game with less a-hole’s like u in my way that want “to Exdous,” go right ahead route for a different team.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
No matter who we hire if the bucs win half this noise will stop and the other half will never be happy no matter who coaches and who plays.

Bucs to go from the youngest head coach to what would be one of the oldest head coaches. That’s not a knee jerk reaction. Way to take your time and think this thing through, dumb @$$e$!
January 8th, 2012 at 3:12 pm
Dude La Canfora is the WEAKEST of the weak sauce!
When’s the last time he broke anything of substance? He never has the scoop on Mort & Schefter or any of the local guys. He’s the only person consistently reporting anything about Mike Sherman being hired and yet NUMEROUS league sources say it’s about to happen. I call BS.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:12 pm
At least the Packers were competitive in nearly every game the year they went 4-12 with Brett Favre stinking it up with his messed up thumb and every RB on the roster getting hurt, and top WRs Javon Walker and Robert Ferguson being lost for the season. losing 8 games by a TD or less.
Sherman had to deal with injuries to his QB, all of his RBs, and his top two WRs… and instead of getting help for the current team in the draft, the team drafted Favre’s eventual replacement (Rodgers) though that is really paying off now, it surely didn’t help a team that was very close at that time.
If we hire Sherman I would be excited. He is very solid. If he hired Ron Meeks to coach the defense, i would be extremely satisfied. Ron Meeks has among the better track records of any current DC out there today. putting the Colts in the top 10 in points scored 5X over his 8 seasons, despite coaching for a team that forced opponents to try to keep pace with the Colts O AND the fact that the team spent most of its money and resources on that same offense. The year before he took over the Colts D they ranked 31st in the league, then he took them to 7th the first season. The year before he left he led the Colts to the 8th spot in the league, then he left and they fell to 23rd. He’s a mere secondary coach for the Panthers and can be hired away.
Sherman’s offense plus Meeks’ defense would straighten this team out quickly.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:14 pm
Brian Billick is the type of guy that will be an 80%er… he will have at least 80% of the fans on his side… much better than the 50/50 guys we have had the last 10 years.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:14 pm
@Samb…whatever your name is. I have had multiple season tickets since you were in diapers ar$e wipe. Us long time season ticket holders are fed up with the constant beat down these penny pinching owners put on us. Go change your diaper and get a clue jerk.

I don’t care who is coaching, as long as we win! I am so TIRED of all the talk about tickets. Do you know who would sell tickets? THE FANS IN TAMPA!!!!!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST BUY THEM!!!!!!!!!! It’s funny you don’t hear about the economy when you talk about hiring a new coach. Hmmm…………
January 8th, 2012 at 3:16 pm
@ RastaMon
What makes you think they wont own the team if they’re going through the motions of this coaching hire? If I’m a perspective owner in negotiations with the Glazers. I tell these guys to wait until everything is signed, sealed and delivered before any franchise-shaping move like this is made.
Selling now doesn’t make any sense.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:17 pm
Let me reassure Buc fans that we intend to carefully look at HC coaching candidates- Joel Glazers. Ok let’s just hire the 1st guy interviewed.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:19 pm
@ flmike
LOL. Because Sapp was dead on about the impact Keith Millard would make coaching our D-line.

Penny pinching? I am paying 70 a month for 10 months. That is a cheap tix. And I love it. Have I ever seen the seats never not even once. BUT I LOVE THE BUCS. I don’t bitch like an ahole no matter how long I have had this or had that. U need to grow up whatever age u r!!!!!!

They’re going to hire a guy that was just fired from Texas A&M without interviewing anyone other than Jerry Gray? No way this is true
January 8th, 2012 at 3:28 pm
@Creamsicle……Stop bringing up the his record at A&M! College and the NFL……different games. Many coaches don’t transition well between them. He was respectable in Green Bay. He’s an upgrade from Rah.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:29 pm
@Jake(off)
I pay $10 to park and walk less than 70 steps $80 and I’m inside, I’LL TAKE IT!!!! This has to be one of the cheapest tix in the NFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ur just an old cryin bastard.

January 8th, 2012 at 3:31 pm

Sherman with childress omg.
They jettisoned chucky for that?
January 8th, 2012 at 3:32 pm
You hire a guy that’s been FIRED twice .Just cause he was a head coach. why not Jery Galvine at this point The Glazers and The ROckstar have no clue! Back in Square one in two years sell the team. Sherman a guy that has been fired twice.!!!
January 8th, 2012 at 3:33 pm
@Sambizle…perhaps you would be better served putting that $70 per month towards your G.E.D or a remedial writing course. It would probably be a more worthwhile use of your money. Go Bucs, get this right!
January 8th, 2012 at 3:34 pm
They said they were bringing in the best, no a mere upgrade… I haven’t seen any “exhaustive search”
January 8th, 2012 at 3:35 pm
in my scenario/Florida Girl….the sale was to be at the end of 2012 season and the end sacrificial puppet HC contract (Raheem) ….new owners free to sign any HC of their chosing. The players in 2011 caught a wiff of the plan and flat out quit….there is no “perspective owner in negotiations with the Glazers.”…..the deal has been agreed to…only thing is the cats out of the bag and left a terrible mess. There are huge tax complications with a sale of this scale…the new owners are helpless until the end of 2012 season…the present owners are helpless until the end of the 2012 season and the fans are HOPELESS until the end of the 2012 season….
I work @ a JiffyLube and change oil for the cars of the well contected and overheard these discussions from the pit…..

so ur trying to get rid of all the bucs fans?
WHy are u a bucs fan?
January 8th, 2012 at 3:38 pm
@ Patrick
You can’t just erase those years man especially the criticisms the fans had about him. He sounds alot like 2011 Raheem Morris:
” But the way the team lost games this year was excruciating. One second-half collapse after another after another after another after another. No halftime adjustments were being made—no effective halftime adjustments, anyway—and opponents had their way with the Aggies during the final 30 minutes (or more) of games…It was the very definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and yet somehow expecting different results.”
“I have no idea what Sherman was like in the locker room or on the practice field, but on game days, he gave the appearance that he was completely lost. When things start unraveling during a game, the team looks to its head coach for guidance, for motivation, for fire and passion, and for the will to survive. When that head coach just stands there, looking bewildered that yet another second-half collapse is upon us, that doesn’t convey the right message to Aggie players, fans, or boosters.”

January 8th, 2012 at 3:46 pm
I am OK with Mike Sherman, though I would have preferred Billick, even Schottenheimer.
Both Billick and Marty are strong personalities I could see clashing with the REAL person running the Tampa Franchise. It is very clear to me it is Mark Dominik running things, not the Glazers.
It appears the Glazers are “all in” when it comes to Mark Dominik, and have turned the franchise over to him.
More then being right or wrong with what I was told and posted, I just want my Team to win, or at least be competitive.
Since it has become obvious that Mark Dominik is not going to be replaced, the new coach must be able to work with him.
Who better then Mike Sherman would fit that job description ?
As another poster points out, Sherman had a hurt Brett Farve, and several of his players out with Injury when he was fired for a 4 and 12 record.
He is a very solid coach, and also a pretty good selector of talent.
I do like when he got right into Warren Sapps face to stick up for his player.
Sherman will take NO crap from Tampa’s crybabies, and will kick ass, take names, and clean house.
I HOPE the Rockstar makes me eat all the bad words I have said about him, for that will mean my Team is winning.
Welcome Mike Sherman!
January 8th, 2012 at 3:47 pm
then again maybe it does.
January 8th, 2012 at 3:57 pm
Can they really be this braindead?
January 8th, 2012 at 4:02 pm
I’ll take Chokenheimer over Shermanhoser any day and twice on Sundays!
January 8th, 2012 at 4:08 pm
How does two interviews constitute looking under every stone till they find the right guy to lead this team. If this is all the interviewing their doing and Shermsn becomes next coach, it’s time to start a boycott and demand the owners sell the team. It would be obvious this another cheap hire and does nothing to make believe they care about winning. This is clearly someone Dominik can control and that’s the problem with this search.

Joe, I’m thinking you just post articles like this to F with us. Maybe the Glazers are locked in a chess match of media mis-direction. The Bucs cannot possibly disregard the public and media scrutiny that would emerge from a disasterous hire like Sherman. Hell, are they interviewing Madden too?
January 8th, 2012 at 4:22 pm
now thats funny ^^^^^^^^^
January 8th, 2012 at 4:23 pm
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
This guy are u serious? And brad childless as oc? Lolololol this franchise is gonna be a joke for the next 5 years if the seriously hire this guy.he got fired from his last 2 jobs and couldn’t even cut in college. I wonder why after his first losing season he never even got another sniffs as a hc? O that’s right because he wasntt that good in the first place. If mark d makes this move he mine as well fire himself now because there gonna continue to lose. Bottom of the division here we come again next year. Mark d please just say no to this guy and brad childless ur gonna set this team back 3-5 years.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:23 pm
Sher or Marty would be fine…at least they would have a game plan !
January 8th, 2012 at 4:24 pm

January 8th, 2012 at 4:25 pm
Joe, why do you have all these nicknames for people and nothing for Mike Shermanhoser?
Based on your reporting of this guy, maybe – ShermWow?
January 8th, 2012 at 4:25 pm
Clearly an organization of buffoons. And Childress interviewing for a “coaching” position sounds like they have made up their mind and now interviewing position candidates (Wade Philips as DC would be very good). I think they will have all the choices selected for various positions and announce everything at once so public, collectively, will go “eh, not so bad…collectively” instead of ranting against just an HC selection. I don’t agree if Sherman is selected (they certainly didn’t make an “exhaustive” search) but I could definitley see those cheapskates and Napoleon GM doing this to soften the backlash from Joe Public.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:28 pm
So this means next year we’re bringing back Favre on to the field, right? Sherman has never achieved anything impressive without Favre.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:28 pm
Falcons getting killed……!!!!! Poor Matty ice has melted.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:30 pm
Love seeing ATL getting whooped!
January 8th, 2012 at 4:30 pm
Green Bay of the Favre days is a lot different than the offensive juggernaut in place there now. We need a system, Sherman has none I’m aware of, and Favre walked all over him when he was coach. PLEASE give Joe Philbin an interview! He can bring a spread offense and some offensive line scheme skills to the table. Have someone like Rod Marinelli take care of the D. Just because Rah was young doesn’t mean we have to go with a fossill this go around.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:32 pm
Marinelli is already the D coordinator for the Bears, doesn’t make sense to go to another team for the same position.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:33 pm
Malarkey’s O sucks in the playoffs
January 8th, 2012 at 4:34 pm
Profootballtalk.com says Wade Phillips will be interviewed Friday with the Glazers and Mark.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:38 pm
Spread Offense? U CAN’T BE SERIOUS.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:38 pm
Oh great, now we’re interviewing Wade Phillips. Did someone mention Dick Jauron? Whatever happened to Dennis Green? Maybe we can bring in Jeff George to lead Freeman.
I know, we can start bringing back the 2009 Lions players too.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:38 pm
This entire story is made up. Sherman is not going to be the Bucs coach.
This is just another example of shoddy reporting without confirming with facts.
I think I know who they actually are planning to go after, and its not Sherman, Mularkey,
billick or Clements (grrrr). I don’t want to jinx anything though, so I ain’t gonna say my suspicions.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:40 pm
and about seeing him as an upgrade to Rah, with all due respect to someone who will someday be a great coach, right now most candidates would be “upgrades” to Morris, but i really don’t see a real difference from a 4-12 record with a disastrous team, to 6-10 with a mediocre team. The bucs need to be turned around, either by Billick, Marty or Zimmer, I don’t see anyone else with the right tools for doing so, and they might too get about the same wins next season, but a better coaching staff would be put together with either of them 3.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:43 pm
@Brown Bags…….I was just kidding about Dick Jauron. The guy has a horrendous HC record.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:44 pm
Mike Sherman does have an offensive system, he is a disciple of the West Coast Offense, the same basic one Green Bay still runs.
His teams were always well coached, and disciplined. True, he does not have the charisma of a Raheem, but he is a solid coach, well schooled in football fundamentals. He demands respect from his players, and does not make stupid coaching mistakes. Tampa may not always win under him, but rarely will you hear it said we were simply out coached.
He was an O Lineman, and GB always had a great O Line to protect Favre, as well as receivers who could get open.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:45 pm
I just changed the oil on Les Steckles car…..
January 8th, 2012 at 4:45 pm
@k1ngAdroc yeah I think Mularkey is 5 minutes away from getting “out-of-the-radar” Falcons are on a 2010 playoff reprise. Giants, on the other hand, might be having a 2007 reprise, almost defeating the Packers, an maybe getting rid of them next week, powerful playcalling and defense today.
January 8th, 2012 at 4:46 pm
On a side not, I wouldn’t mind Phillips. He’s a defense guy, and I want offense, but he also is itching to prove himself.
Coaching Dallas is not an easy thing to do with Jerry controlling everything.

January 8th, 2012 at 5:05 pm
I spend alot of time due west not many miles from Green Bay. My wife is a Packer fan. I’ve been trying to defend the Bucs organization for years, the highlight was the SB victory in the 2002 season. I took all the grief this year and every other year but 2002. I’m trying to be a good fan, as I’ve been for the last 30 years. But if we sign a loser like Mike Sherman, I honestly don’t know what to say. I don’t know if I can any longer have faith in the organization. Of course, I can sit around the campfire and just shake my head while everyone else laughs at the Bucs. Or maybe I can just give up professional football all together. The college game is more compelling any more, as it seems the NFL is becoming like the old AFL to the max with the defense meaning very little and the winning team seems to have a good QB and 3 or 4 fast/ tall receivers that will score 50 points/ 600 passing yards a game and give up nearly as much or more.
Bring in a guy like Billick….give me something to “hang my hat” on. How many years of a Culverhouse Philosophy can fans take. I’ve about had it.
January 8th, 2012 at 5:07 pm
I don’t want to jinx anything though, so I ain’t gonna say my suspicions.

January 8th, 2012 at 5:36 pm
I fess up. Firing Gru and replacing him with an assistant d backs coach who had no clue whatsoever bc Gru wouldn’t further slash payroll was a terrible move.
Come to think of it, I was saying exactly that 3 years ago.
The good: it is impossible to do worse than rah.
The bad: ensuring success costs money, our owners clearly in spite of what they say (that joe buys like 10 cents a gallon gasoline) are not interested in doing that.
The Glazers excuse with being cheap: how would you feel about opening your checkbook when Dom just spent 20 million on gmc the last 2 years.
January 8th, 2012 at 5:52 pm
I said who it isn’t…is it really so hard to figure out?
@Thomas
How do you know that the Glazers don’t want to spend money right now? You are drawing conclusions without seeing the final result of their search.
Do you really believe every word the media claims?
January 8th, 2012 at 6:06 pm
Don’t understand the Sherman hate. He won 9, 12, 12, 10 and 10 games before being fired for a terrible season in GB. But he was fired for being a bad GM, not Head Coach. He also helped turn around Texas A&M. He wouldn’t be my first choice but he is certainly not near the worst(Childress? yuck).

A Real:
Until I have evidence to the contrary, I will rely on recent history – we are the cheapest org in NFL post-2004.
We actually hired RahRah Morris as head coach – get your head around that – and his initial salary was: 11.75 per hour plus a 10 dollar gift card to Publix for every cute name or phrase he made up.
January 8th, 2012 at 6:14 pm
Rumor had it that Fisher bowed out when he heard that the Glazers refused to pay overtime and forced employees to pay for each sheet of toilet paper that they used beyond two squares per event.
January 8th, 2012 at 6:14 pm
No ones hired yet. Keep the personal insults down guys. I believe the common denominator here is, we are all Bucs fans.
January 8th, 2012 at 6:17 pm
This is just speculation, Wade Phillips even said he has an interview Friday, so why would they keep interviewing coaches if they are going to hire Sherman this week?

January 8th, 2012 at 6:30 pm
Where is the personal insult? I must have missed it. Saying our owners are cheap and prior head coach was incompetent are not personal insults – those statements are professional criticisms – and well – facts.
January 8th, 2012 at 6:33 pm
No thanks Mike Sherman…. I would like either Billick, Schottenhimer. Has anyone thought that maybe, just maybe the owners are wanting to talk with someone from one of the playoff teams coaches. Who is very busy right about now.
@Thomas 2.2 with your inside knowledge of what is and is not said and done over at 1 Buc you should have your own blog like joebucsfan.com. You could call it Thomas2.2fullofBS.com. How do you think you know so much more than everyone else, about things that are only know about between the Glazers , coach Gruden, gm Allen. Unless maybe your one if these people who comes on here to create issues with your inside knowledge. I doubt it.

Sherman was a bad bench coach. He was out foxed by Gruden a number of times. My wife was a Packer fan, and I told her and her packer friends that the Packers would NEVER win a championship with Sherman at the helm. He couldn’t control Favre. Favre basically told him to blank himself and overrode his play calling. He is a players coach, that couldn’t control the stars. That is just the kind of guy we need at the helm with our young and impressionable group. And even with the talent he had, he could never get to the promised land. Forget him. Mark my words, if we hire him two or three years from now the fans will be saying “who in the world would have ever thought he would be a good HC in Tampa”.
January 8th, 2012 at 6:35 pm
I missed the personal insult too…but I can come up with one if needed.
I usually don’t care for anything Thomas says, but the 11.75 comment made me grin….slightly.
January 8th, 2012 at 6:42 pm
bring in RG3….that way Dungy comes back! =)
January 8th, 2012 at 6:45 pm
LMAO! Sherman????
This franchise is a freakin joke! Unbelieveable!
Please do this Glazer….you will save me from having to spend another $2,000 on your crappy product that aint even worth being called an NFL team!
January 8th, 2012 at 6:48 pm
why would they even bother interviewing Wade Phillips? they have invested so heavily in pieces (that seem like a perfect fit) for a 4-3 defense….now they would blow that up, or force these guys into a scheme that might not fit their skill set? houston was able to make the quick turn around because they were really only lacking an impact CB (Joseph), they already had a lot of the integral pieces in place to make a seamless transition to a 3-4. add this years draft picks JJ Watts and Brooks Reed, and u have a lot of personnel to operate that system effectively.
Bucs? not so much….
say no to Wade Phillips. i live in NY….i would buy season tickets and fly down for every home game if it ensured Billick would be hired lol
January 8th, 2012 at 6:55 pm
I’m ok with Sherman. I would also like Zimmer out of Cincy. Hopefully if we sign Sherman, he can bring either Zimmer or Wade Phillips in as our D Cord. I would love to have Phillips as our DC. He would drastically improve our defensive attitude!!! But I think Sherman would be a good choice as well as Mike Zimmer!! GO BUCS
January 8th, 2012 at 6:56 pm
@Big Marlon B
Wade Phillips 3-4 is a one gap defense not a two gap, we have the players to run a one gap 3-4 defense.
January 8th, 2012 at 7:02 pm
Big Marlon:
This major investment in our 4-3 gave up 518 points and a record ypp – this defense gave up 41 points to the Falcons in less than a half.
do you really believe converting to a 3-4 could possibly be worse? Ever? Come on your better than that.
Shoot – you could convert to anything and give up less than 41 in 1.5 quarters – we are talking about the Falcons who just scored 2 points vs the Giants.
January 8th, 2012 at 7:31 pm
When I see Sherman’s 4-12 season, I think of Sam Wyche’s 3-13 in Cincinnati no one could explain. Until 5 years later when Wyche was fired.
January 8th, 2012 at 7:31 pm
@Thomas 2.2…….and don’t forget the Jaguars who got blown out by the Falcons.
January 8th, 2012 at 7:32 pm
Phillips is a lax players coach as is Sherman. I don’t know where people are getting disciplinarian out of him. Reports are Favre walked all over him.
The no nonsense guy is Marty and likely Zimmer. Maybe Gray.
Marty would stabalize things and for God’s sake could help the rockstar tremendously with personnel. Wouldnt mind seeing him coach 2-3 years and move to front office. He would command respect to bring good assistants cause his coaching tree is phenominal. It includes Dungy and Tomlin, and Cowher among others. Have a good assistant trained by him to move to HC when he retires. And he has the drive to get his ring.
Restoration ot credibility would be instantaneous. And Marty ball has always been fun to watch.
January 8th, 2012 at 7:35 pm
i do think they could be better than that. i think with proper coaching, and someone stressing the importance of maintaining gaps and responsibilities, they can be a good defense (of course with the right additions thru draft or dare i say FA).
as long as they trust the man next to them and dont try to do it all on their own, i think they can be built into a very good defense. but it all starts at the top, with proper coaching and preparation.
January 8th, 2012 at 7:48 pm
There goes my Mularkey pick…two points! LOL!
January 8th, 2012 at 8:00 pm
All depends on who his coordinators are & the coaches under them.
January 8th, 2012 at 8:18 pm
Doesn’t really matter. If Dominick is still making the major decissions, the team will suck. Remember, this is the moron that signed Clayton and Quincy to big contracts. He watched them everyday, and still had no idea what he was seeing. Any 12 year old in the stadium would have told him they suck, but he didn’t know!!
Raheem screwed up enough to get fired on his Own merits. But So did Dominick- who did he bring in to help a horrible LBer Corp and Secondary? Nobody!! And he really weakened the team by cutting two experienced captains!
Probably will have to wait thru another coaching change, but team won’t get better until Fominick packs his bag too! Drafts ok, no skill at all regarding Veteran players.
Still not done taking out the trash
January 8th, 2012 at 8:19 pm
Pete,
What makes you think the Glazers and Dom would let whomever is the new coach hire any quality assistants? Rah couldn’t.
January 8th, 2012 at 8:59 pm
Right now, the Glazers/Dominick are in CPR mode. I think we’ll see many positive changes this year.
January 8th, 2012 at 9:17 pm
Real,
History tells me that that may not be the case.
Loverboy Hugh did it for a decade, keeping the payroll at a barebones level and using the TV contract to get rich.
Now I know that the new players agreement has a floor that will force them to spend more in 2013. And if they do, it may be more that then the fact that they are on CPR.
So I guess I’ll believe it when I see it.
January 8th, 2012 at 9:25 pm
How many of you thought Dick Vermeil was going to take the Rams to a Super Bowl? NOBODY!
January 8th, 2012 at 9:35 pm
You mean Dick Vermeil, who won a college national championship, took the Eagles to SB 15, and retired due to feeling “burned out”? He wasn’t fired from Philly.
I didn’t know if he would lead them to a SB victory, but I always thought he was a darn good coach.
Sherman or Childress couldn’t hold his jock.

Excuse me…he beat the national number one team Ohio State and won the Rose bowl.
But after the clarification, the rest remains the same.
January 8th, 2012 at 11:00 pm
@Capt. Tim
Dom tried to get better LBs and Safetys. The Glazers control the amount of money that is alotted to be spent. If they stay true to their word in the press conference. Look for Tampa to spend some real money this upcoming Free Agency period. It is about time.
And common sense says build through draft then fill in your holes with good free agents. We have the good solid yound core. And this draft class has some talent early on and we have a chance to get the best CB to come out since Charles Woodsen. If he is there at #5 our secondary is automatically better! Add a Safety in the 3rd Round and LaMichael James in the 2nd. Our team is going places.
January 8th, 2012 at 11:39 pm
“If the Glazers stay true to their word”…..I would be very pleasantly shocked. Since Grudens first year, I haven’t seen them spend big money on FA’s.
January 8th, 2012 at 11:43 pm
There goes the rockstar crap again. Joe sure does love his Dom.
January 9th, 2012 at 8:02 am
Don’t hire Sherman. I rather they bring Raheem back than hire Sherman.
January 9th, 2012 at 10:22 am
Funkymunkey- where did you hear Dom tried to sign LBers and Safties( needed CBs, by the way)? That’s nit what Dom or Joel Glazer said during their joint press release! Dominick said that the ” build thru the draft only” was his plan, and his alone. He said he planned to sign Fas this year, which was pretty much an admission of guilt about last year.
Not signing FAs was Dominick’s incompetence. So was signing lazy slackers like Quincy Black. The guy has NO talent with players, other than undrafted rookies and draft picks. He will continue to ruin this team, like be did last spring , until the Glazers realize he isn’t the man for the job. After the Clayton, Ward, black, etc., contracts, you’d think they would have figured it out already. Apparently not.
Be ready for more if the same- piss poor vet signings/ contracts, and undrafted rookies getting scorched on the field.
Wish I could be more optimistic, but thats where we are. We have an unskilled “yes man” running the operation. Sucks
January 9th, 2012 at 12:04 pm
captain tim, one of the biggest rah and dominick, and “plan” fans there were has now flip flopped. Got any inside scoop for us capt.
January 9th, 2012 at 5:38 pm
The Glazers have ruined our Free agency periods every offseason just about. Where have you been. The plan from day 1 of Rah and Dom was to build thru the draft then sign FA to fill in the holes. Dom wanted better players but was only allowed to sign players who where older and cheaper. That is not his fault. Common sense says he tried to hire better players. You don’t go out and look for scrubs. You want the best, but if the owners don’t sign off on it then it doesn’t matter what you want. You don’t think he would’ve signed Jonathon Joseph if he would’ve gotten the green light??? IF you think he wouldn’t then you know nothing and lack all common sense in that brain of yours.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:49 pm
FunkeyMunkey- that’s not what he said!! He said it was his plan to build thru the draft alone, until he built a solid base( how’d that work out), then he would ” Delve” into free agency.
Does yer Dom mancrush cause hearing loss, or comprehension issues???
Jarrett- lost faith in Dim last spring. I said Rah deserved a fair chance. He got one, and failed.
Time to move on
