Marty Schottenheimer Not Atop Bucs’ List

January 11th, 2012

Earlier today, Bucs beat writer eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune visited “The Fabulous Sports Babe” heard locally on WHBO-AM 1040 and gave an update on the Bucs’ coaching search.

In short, he said Marty Schottenheimer is not atop the Bucs’ list of candidates and that Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik is deeply involved in each and every interview per the wishes of Team Glazer.

“My information — which is fairly fresh — is I wouldn’t be talking up Marty Schottenheimer so much, nor Wade Phillips.

“I don’t think they have their guy yet. You are not going to like this one, but [the search] could stretch out a couple of weeks. I think there are other candidates as yet unnamed. They may be with some teams in the playoffs, but I’m not sure about that. Things are still in flux.

“I don’t think this Bucs thing is nearly wrapped up.

“The Bucs are really not interested in Jeff Fisher. They have never interviewed him. He is not coming to Tampa.

“For anyone that thinks thie Bucs will wrap this up Monday with a nice tidy press conference, I don’t think that is happening. i think they might be in the early stages.”

Team Glazer  “is locked in with Mark Dominik. He is a survivor; he stayed. Let’s not be naive, ultimately the Glazers will make the decision [of who the new coach will be] but Dominnik is in every interview and he has input. The fact [Mike Sherman and Dominik] share the same agent, that’s not going to carry the day with the Glazers.

“The guy they ultimately hire will have to be an old school disciplinarian. I wish they would open it up to first-time coaches.

“Steve Spagnuolo, go and get that man [for defensive coordinator]. Get him! He’s up for grabs. get him!”

Boy, that sounds familiar. I guess I am his unnamed source.

  2. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

Russ Grimm is on their radar, as is Tom Clements. Grimm is now out of the playoffs and ESPN ticker said that the Bucs requested an interview with him through the Steelers.

I bet many of you thought I was talking out my butt earlier this week 😉

  3. Joe Says:

Might want to get a screengrab of that crawl because Joe cannot find any confirmation of that anywhere.

Not the Phoenix papers, not the Tampa papers, not BSPN.com, no where.

  4. ZanyZack Says:

Ummmmm. Russ Grimm works for the Cardinals. I guess you were talking out your asssss.

WTF … THis is starting to feel like a FREE AGENCY Period … Hope for a key veteran … and we Get Quincy Black

I haven’t seen it since the one time either…maybe it was a typo? Wouldn’t be the first time.

There just waiting for the cheapest candidate.

It said they requested permission to interview Grimm…I made the mistake of thinking ihe was on the steelers. That’s my bad.

Regardless, Joe might be right. I’m digging around and cannot find mention of it now either.

But I still believe he’s on their radar and so is Tom. We’ll see after this weekend whether I am right.

A guy from a playoff team would not come as cheap as you think.

Joe, did you listen to Derreck today? About what he thinks will happen?

  10. 2goodbucs Says:

Marty excites most of the Buc fan base, I think you bring him in as HC and then hire Chip Kelly from Oregon to be the OC until Marty decides to pass the baton to Chip when he retires. As for DC, I think Marty should get Warren Sapp & Derrick Brooks on to coaching. =)

  11. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

Joe, I got spam filtered again.

  12. eric Says:

Might as well take their time. Not like anyone is gonna swoop in and beat us out of somebody in this group. We could wait two years and they all would still be available.

Could there be a big fish mulling over a fat offer?

At least those initial reports about Sherman being a quick hire appear to be BS.

I can wait two weeks. Take your time Dominik.

  13. Brad Says:

Two things I don’t like with article . Marty is not atop the list (based on the candidates they have interviewed, how the hell not), and Dominik is still the GM and is part of the interviewing .. God help us and this franchise.

  14. Brent Says:

Someday Sapp will make an excellent coach… Hope he’s going to move that direction… Would love for MArty to be HC with a kickass OC and DC that’s hot now to bring up when Marty’s ready to turn in the playbook…

  15. eric Says:

Hey Ira, can’t really hire a DC without a head coach. Besides Spagnuolo got canned from a HC job, so the bucs would have to pay him like a HC to be a coordinator.

The bucs like that the other way around – pay a HC like a coordinator. Or just go without a coordinator.

You know…Dominick really isn’t that bad. And if you were paying attention, the GLAZERS are at every interview to make the final decision.

I think you are buying into the “let’s blame Dominick now that Raheem is gone” crowd. Don’t be so weak-minded.

  17. knucknbuc Says:

Aite im cool with them taking there time thats understandable and I want them too. All i got to say is if this thing does stretch out for 2-3 more weeks and the best candidate that they can come up with is Mike Sherman at the end imma be pissed.

  18. adam ant Says:

Of all the local reporters, I respect Ira the least. He is clueless. Plus, who listens to the un-fabulous sports hag anyway. She is brutal.

  19. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

Why in god’s name anybody thinks Sapp would ever be a good couch is beyond me.

  20. jvato24 Says:

Why are they doing all these interviews and faking it ???

Apple ROof says they had the guy picked a month ago

  21. Brad Says:

@arealbuc.. No your wrong. I’ve been posting before Morris was ever fired that the blame should have been with the pop star or at least equally to Morris. I do not like him as my teams GM. He’s a major failure and hasn’t one thing to hang is hat on. There are some players that might turn out ok but none proven yet. When a team has a meltdown the way the Bucs did no one should be spared from getting fired. Not sure what you see but I don’t see much that can be positive. You must be related to the joe that only think his blame is minimum. I still hope once the coaching search is over he either gets fired or demoted.

  22. eric Says:

Sapp would be a bad couch.

    Lazyboy maybe.

  23. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

All these people are being interviewed as potential assistants, the glazers like to keep it cheap, next year Dominak will be GM and head coach then he really will be a rock star!

  25. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

whoops I meant coach not couch

  26. Macabee Says:

Relax guys, I don’t think this is a big deal. I think the Glazers are concerned about chemistry – not necessarily between players and coaches, but between Dominik, The Glazers, and the new coach.

As I recall while Marty is a good coach, he is also a General Patton type that is not afraid to speak his mind. If someone fires you with a 14-2 record, it maybe something other than your coaching that they don’t like about you. It might also be wise to remember that there has been 26 NFL coaching changes since 2007, the year Marty was let go and this is his first and only interview. Perhaps he’s not been interested or he’s turned them down, still it’s a fact.

While Sherman doesn’t have the record that Marty has, he’s known to be a statesman that maintains good interpersonal relations with everybody and his record in the NFL isn’t that bad.

If it’s Marty or Sherman or another experienced coach, I think we will improve this year. Everybody got an eye opener this time around. I think we will have a favorable draft, I believe we are going to FA this year, I believe the Glazers will spend considerable more than they have in past years, we are going to get senior-level coaches no matter what their names or ages, and I think Dominik grew – he will be a better GM this time around. And we’re going to get all new position coaches picked by senior HCs. So my opinion is that we got better in lots of places, not just the selection of a single HC whoever that may be!

  27. Mainebuc Says:

Not buying it, nothing but opinion, IMO. He basically says that theybwant an an old school disciplinarian, but that they are looking at playoff coordinators…huh? The media just can process the thought of hiring one of these guys. I would wager Schotty is the next HC. That’s not just personal desire either, he fits the mold exactly and has excited the fan base, sorry Ira, no envogue coordinator.

  28. Architek Says:

The longer they wait the more risks for this off-season. This team needs serious evaluation and needs to fill in FA and in the draft. The sooner they make a decision, the better they can prepare and get on the same page. It has been said and I will repeat, this off-season will tell all about where the Glazers stand with their team. It doesn’t look good but we will see. Maybe Dufus is willing to let an experience talent screening coach school him on when to or not pull the trigger on a player because his track record stinks and it has made Tampa a laughable organization.

  29. stevek Says:

Click Click Boom! Sign some FA’s sign a talented proven coach. Spend some money Glazers! Do it, or sell the team, as you are proving to be an injustice to the American Sunday.

  30. raphael Says:

its like they are drafting Gaines Adams instead of Adrian Peterson all over again….wtf… they could have a real coach and if we end up with Sherman I will be pissed…

  31. Brad Says:

@realbuc.. If your going to be a fan of the GM you might want to learn how to spell his name..

You know…Dominick really isn’t that bad. And if you were paying attention, the GLAZERS are at every interview to make the final decision.

It’s Dominik for future reference. And take of your pewter glasses and learn to take someone’s opinion without calling them weak minded. All your posts are weak. Everyone. I haven’t agreed with one of your posts.

  32. raphael Says:

DOMMINICK…come on people …class is in session

  33. Tommy Boy Says:

While I would like Spags as a DC, you dont pick your coordinators before your HC. You want your coach to pick HIS guys. Dominik has proven he cant pick coordinators and position coaches so let us not let him put the cart before the horse so to speak and pick the OC and DC before we even know who the HC is.

  34. stevek Says:

    @ A REAL BUCS FAN:

    YOU say:
    “A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

“I think you are buying into the “let’s blame Dominick now that Raheem is gone” crowd. Don’t be so weak-minded.”

What are you talking about? 17 wins in 3 seasons. No playoffs. 8th highest paid player and #3 pick could very well be a bust, lack of FA signings, DOM is to blame bc the GLAZERS WON’T STEP UP AND PUT THE OWNESS ON THEMSELVES!

It is weakminded to not think DOM is DOOM.

  35. bucfanjeff Says:

I like that they are being thorough. However, there needs to be SOME sense of urgency. You have good DC’s in Spags and Del Rio that won’t be available for very long.

  36. Wisconsin Bucs fan Says:

Hire Marty and let him do the rest. Fire Dominick.

  37. raphael Says:

    agreed wisconsin !

  38. Brandon Says:

Sorry Joe, but Ron Meeks has a better track record than Spags. Check it out… Meeks took over the 31st ranked defense and for 5 of the next 8 seasons had a top 10 defense despite working for a team that put little of its resources into improving that side of the ball. Then he left and the defense collapsed in 2010 and he went over to Carolina and maintained a middle of the pack defense statistically despite having a historically bad offense and losing their best player by far (Julius Peppers) by coaching up an underachieving DE (Charles Johnson).

Ron Meeks is clearly superior to just about any defensive coordinator out there… sorry most of you guys that only want to sign the biggest names don’t see it.

  42. stevek Says:

    I fear the worst too.

The Glazers just don’t care about winning. Money money money…. Too bad too Tampa Bay could be an elite football franchise if only the owners gave a hoot and their GM was allowed to spend on talent.

  43. Tommy Boy Says:

    @ A Real Bucs Fan

You are talking out your ass. Grimm was never in the playoffs. He coaches for the Cardinals you jackass not the Steelers. This the reason why Joe can’t find anything about those lies you wrote.

  44. eric Says:

Dang shame Abe Gibron passed away.

I can only imagine what he would do to these guys on defense.

  45. mbaby Says:

Mike Mccoy? him and Dom share the same agent

  46. 911bucs Says:

I hope they don’t miss out on any candidates for OC or DC while waiting for the playoffs to end.

  47. Pete 422 Says:

As long as they make the right hire, I’m good with it……….Billick……

  48. Garv Says:

I have no problem with the Buccaneers taking their time on this.
I have to assume they will be looking at some coordinators, assistant coaches.
And remember guys, it’s not like Sherman, Marty and Wade are going anywhere else to be a HC.

Hopefully the Glazers and Dominik will pick the best man for the job regardless of salary or fan appreciation. Remember, didn’t ownership insist they “listened to the fans” when they fired Jon and Bruce? LOL

  49. Shut the Buc Up Says:

If he’s not at the top of the list, why would they have him back for a 2nd talk? Doesn’t add up

  50. BigMacAttack Says:

My worry about them taking their time is that the early bird gets the worm. The Bucs have missed out on many good plays in the past because they think they are the only organization on the planet and take their sweet-@ss time. It tends to narrow the field of what few qualified, if any candidates there are in play. I just hope they get it right, but I’m tired of being optimistic and being shat upon by them. I sense a certain amount of arrogance from the Glazers and their Boy Wonder. I just know they are going to screw this up. When you see this kind of indecision it tends to indicate deeper problems, such as extreme incompetence. We so royally screwed its a joke. Why not just save us all some time, screw it up now and get it over with.

Oh please just eat a boatload of crow and beg Chucky to come back.

“You are talking out your ass. Grimm was never in the playoffs. He coaches for the Cardinals you jackass not the Steelers. This the reason why Joe can’t find anything about those lies you wrote.”

Tommy Boy – Russ Grimm was the OL coach of the Steelers from 01-06 and won a Super Bowl ring with the team in 05. He is the OL coach for the Cardinals since 07 and almost got another with them against the Steelers in 08. He also appeared in 4 Super Bowls as a player and won 3. So… as a player AND coach he’s appeared in a total of 6 Super Bowls and won 4. So, he WAS in the playoffs (just not this year) and he DID coach for the Steelers, it’s just been a while. Of course, the Steelers are no longer in the playoffs either, so it doesn’t matter if he coaches for the Steelers or Cardinals. He is available for hire either way (and yes, I know he coaches for the Cardinals as stated above).

  53. MTM Says:

Dufus and the Glazhores are just waiting for all the good candidates to be taken. Then they will hire the cheapest coach still available. Then act like they gave it there best shot. Just like free agency for the last 3 yrs.

  54. White Tiger Says:

Love me, hate me, some Schotty…part of me likes that we’re not overheating about Martyball…which is a lot like Dungyball…just can’t get lathered up over boring offense that play just well enough to get ya’ beat (in the playoffs) in close one…

So, if it’s not Schotty – and it’s going to take a couple weeks – it’s probably someone who’s team is still in the playoffs…So that means it’s probably Cam Cameron…and I wouldn’t mind that.

eric – love the “Sapp-as-a-LazyBoy” take!

  55. Pruritis Ani Says:

I always thought Marty Schottenheimer would be a good choice for the team and still do. I really do hope the source is wrong and he is indeed the top choice. When looking at the candidates, we tend to only look at the record. Which is of course obvious as it is the easiest way to gauge how successful a coach has the potential to be. But also, I think we should look at the assistant coaches the person will bring or has developed in the past. Schottenheimer has had some really good coaches that started their careers with him. Cowher, Dungy, Phillips, et al. If that is an indicator, I think that perhaps it the most important consideration if he were to be hired in Tampa. Why? The guy is 68 years old. Granted 68 today isn’t like being 68 when I was a kid, but realistically, we can expect 3 or 4 years tops out of him. So, who he brings in and grooms for the future is equally important. Otherwise we could be in the situation we were in when Gruden was let go. A coaching vacuum so to speak where the DB Coach became the DC and the HC in a ridiculously short period of time. Just my opinion.

  56. Niko (The Optimist) Says:

Good on the Bucs for not being in a hurry. There is no need, team officials can go to the Senior Bowl like Dominik. Best to take their time, gather info, and be thorough.
Remember Jon Gruden came in as late as any coach can possibly come, and we won a super bowl. So its not going to kill the Bucs to wait and get a good coach.

  57. New Coach Says:

Why the tease Glazers? Just sign Marty up and get it over with. There are no other proven commodities outside of Fisher/Cowher and they aren’t coming. Hey to say it as a right leaning individual, but MOVE ON!
