Marty Ball Excites Davin Joseph
January 10th, 2012Without hesitation, Bucs Pro Bowl guard Davin Joseph said there’s a name on the publicized list of Bucs coaching candidates that he’d love to throw his allegiance to.
Joseph is a fan of Marty Ball, Marty Schottenheimer’s brand of physical offense, so he said today on PrimeTime on WHBO-AM 1040.
“Marty Schottenheimer,” Joseph responded when asked if he felt excited about any of the coaching prospects.
“I heard his name, because I remember back when he coached in San Diego. They had the power run scheme and they were just awesome. You know, that’s when [LaDanian Tomlinson] had his better years. They were just playing some serious ball.
“Of course, their whole thing was that when they got to the playoffs, they just weren’t playing good. They just lose in the playoffs every time they got there. But I’m like, ‘Shoot, I’d like to get there.’ I’d like to get there. … You’re talking about a guy who loves to play some power football.
Joseph went on to say the Bucs are built to run a power running scheme and they’re in a brutally tough division and Schottenheimer could get the Bucs competitive. “He’s a guy that can definitely get us some wins,” Joseph said.
Also, Joseph added that LeGarrette Blount is a talent that just needs a full offseason in a system and is a running back that has all the tools, running, catching and blocking.
As Joe’s written before, Schottenheimer is probably salivating at the thought of what could happen if he got to utilize Blount.
January 10th, 2012 at 8:31 pm
Sounds like Davin was tired of just 17 wins in 3 seasons as well. This strongly implies he wsmas tired of playing under the incompetent.
There us talent on this team like: DJ, Penn, Faine, Ronde, Talib, T Jax (when not high), Free, Mike Will, unfortunately almost all of it was brought in when the pop star was not GM.
Watch what Marty does in 2 years if he is the guy. It will cement for Pete Doucher how incompetent Rah was.
January 10th, 2012 at 8:44 pm
NOW we’re typing Joe!
Sounds good, doesn’t it?
January 10th, 2012 at 8:50 pm
If the Glazers are serious about winning and building a tough football team then they have to be seriously considering Schottenheimer. Also, if they have any idea of the pulse of Bucs players as well as fans they know by now that Marty is a popular choice among most. He’ll put fans back in the seats and numbers back in the “W” column. Period. He has my vote.
January 10th, 2012 at 8:56 pm
Thomas…Rah was inexperienced, but one day he’ll be a good head coach. Of course, when he does become one, I fully expect you to hide under your covers so you won’t have to admit it.
And…IF Marty comes here (he isn’t) and does well, it just means he is better than Raheem. I never made the claim that Raheem Morris was the best coach around. I just said he needed time. And toward the end, he even blew it with me (in the press conferences).
Oh, and you can call me Doucher all you want…you see, I’m an adult. Name don’t hurt me. I don’t get my rocks off by being right to the detriment of others. I don’t sit there being a troll on the fansites of division rivals and pretend to be a fan who hates everything about the team. I’m not inbred and I don’t pleasure myself by looking at other men.
It’s too bad you cannot say the same on any of those things.
Face it kid…you are outclassed. And you know why? Because I’m better than you. Hurt’s huh?
(Your turn)
January 10th, 2012 at 8:57 pm
Dude! This is counding better each day. MArty!
January 10th, 2012 at 8:57 pm
It is apparent to me that the Glazers are looking for a guy to bring in to get the team respectable again. A coach that will turn it around in the next 3-4 years and then bring in a guy to put them over the top. Marty/Sherman are the perfect guys for this. Make the team respectable maybe a playoff run or two and then Dungy the crap out of him.
January 10th, 2012 at 8:59 pm
Wow imagine us playing Marty ball in the NFC south against the saints, Dixie chicks, and pink panthers. Smashing Blount relentlessly at their finesse teams while there throwing the ball around and commiting turnovers. I LOVE IT!!
January 10th, 2012 at 9:09 pm
Thomas,
Why do you continue to talk about Raheem? Do you still have a little thing for him? Move on, buddy. That ship has sailed, you should too. At this point, I truly hope Raheem is proven incompetent, because that will mean we do have great talent on this team. However, he’s gone now, so why pile on? Oh yeah, because you are a jack arse that doesn’t know how to do anything but be a negative pr!ck.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:12 pm
If Marty came…I would really like a good OC as well…Marty is old and the Florida heat is really bad in Training Camp. It will have a toll on him.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:12 pm
JERRY! JERRY! JERRY!
January 10th, 2012 at 9:14 pm
@ClayBURN94
Marty would have to vastly improve our Oline first. We need at least 2 better players there.
@Hawaiian Buc
Hey, I was on my Kindle earlier and hate typing on that thing, but I just wanted to let you know you’ve made some great posts today.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:15 pm
The more I think about it, the more Marty makes perfect sense to join this team. Number one, he’s an old school, disciplined, proven winner. Pretty safe to say we need that. Number two, his scheme fits the talent on this team perfectly (power run game, utilizing a lot of play action). Number three, he is a big name that could perhaps instill some much needed hope for both the players and the fans (certainly more than Mike Sherman or Brad Childress). Number 4, he has always had a great staff, as many have gone on to be very successful head coaches (which is good because he is like 140 years old and won’t be around forever). Number 5, and most importantly, he WANTS to coach this team. His agent is the one that initiated the contact between him and the Bucs. He must feel he can make this team successful quickly, or he would have contacted other teams.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:20 pm
Rick Stroud via twitter: Per ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Marty Schottenheimer interviewed with the Bucs today and both sides came away impressed with the other. I hope hes just not a smoke screen.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:34 pm
Joe,
Do you see what’s happening here? The Hiemer is giving us Bucs fan hope! We haven’t had this feeling in a long time. Hope he is the next coach.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:36 pm

January 10th, 2012 at 9:38 pm
@Hawaiian Buc
Good points.
One question though…would he sell out home games?
I don’t know if any of the guys mentioned can do that on name alone, but it would be nice to sell out the home opener for a change.
Rick Stroud….he’s making a safe call. If the Bucs do not sign Marty, he doesn’t look like an idiot, and if they do he cane say he “scopped” everyone. That’s the way Stroud works.
Still, hope is hope. If the search ends tonight and we get Marty, it means he really impressed them…enough to cancel all other interviews.
That is perhaps the biggest selling point thus far. I would imagine Marty wants to go to a team he feels he can win the big game with, given his age. This would likely be his final coaching gig.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:38 pm
Bring in Marty!!
January 10th, 2012 at 9:39 pm
Excellent points Mr. Hawaiian.
I would add he would also be of great help on the personnel side both in the draft and FA.
Seems like just what the Dr. ordered. There is no real long term solution out there so let Marty stabalize this thing.
I recall Bud Grant did this years ago with the Vikes. Came back for a season after the team had fallen apart when he first retired.
Marty is five years younger than Dick Lebeau.
If it happens please let the man pick his own staff. He is a master of that for sure.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:40 pm
Marty ball wears out running backs. The league is built on passing for the most part now. We need a passing game. Ground and pound equals we can’t score to save our lives football which equals mediocre. The Glazers need to to take a big swing on a HC. No more BE.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:48 pm
MTM…really?
Marty is the best name we’ve seen, and I believe he can turn this team around.
BTW…The Chargers were not JUST a running team.
Okay, Stroud actually had quotes this time. That link was very encouraging, ClayBURN94.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:50 pm
@ MTM
with the offenses we have to contend with in our division, dont u think it would be a good idea to play some ball control offense and keep them on the sideline? best way to beat an explosive offense isn’t necessarily to outshoot them….its to minimize their time on the field. of course the defense would have to be improved to help with that, but im sure u get my point.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:50 pm
You know the best way to beat a high power offense? You keep them off the field with your ground and pound clockeating offense…
January 10th, 2012 at 9:51 pm
Ok guys i know im getting a little obsessive but im pumped! http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2Fmobile&gl=US#/watch?v=XOXK0NIqg8E
January 10th, 2012 at 9:52 pm
06 Chargers scored 492 points, first in the NFL.
30.8 pts per game.
Give me a whole lotta that please.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:53 pm
Marty Ball!!!
January 10th, 2012 at 9:53 pm
well done JT. beat u to it tho 🙂 lol
January 10th, 2012 at 9:55 pm
joe – didn’t Marty have the nigerian nightmare [christian okoye] in KC ?
January 10th, 2012 at 9:55 pm
Is anyone forgetting that we cant run the ball? And we can’t pick up 3rd downs? When Blount (Who I love) sat the first half after he fumbled our offense moved the ball! When Blount is the featured back we look predictable and Josh plays the spread, throw first offense so much better. We need to be looking for another back that can play an uptempo offense and a coach that will let Josh open up the field.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:55 pm
Joe here,
@ARealBucsFan – Had to laugh at the take that the heat during training camp would take it’s toll on Chokenheimer. Please. They can surely use modern technology to keep him cool and hydrated. Perhaps cheerleaders spraying him and shading him with umbrellas.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:05 pm
I remember Marty, Joe Montana and Marcus Allen came into the ole Tampa Stadium years ago and humiliated our bucs.
I suspect the man isnt allergic to a good vet or two either.
Lets get this party started.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:11 pm
Out of all the candidates who have interviewed or who are reported to interview, Marty has my vote!
FYI A REAL BUCS FAN, you are an incompetent fool, read your posts again after you have put the bottle down. Simply b/c Marty is an elderstatesman does not make him a brittle old fool who will melt in the sun. You may not be inbread but it sure sounds like you are overcompensating for something and very likely uncomfortable in your own skin.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:16 pm
MARTY MARTY MARTY. Cmon glazers make this happen I have a good feeling with Marty s coming in here. He could change this ship around I feel like. Best way to deal with the offenses in our division. BEAT THEM INTO THE GROUND!!! We can do this already with blount. Just need another back we can depend on. Then we can use the deep and middle of the field for freeman to operate off of pa passes. Marty always has good defenses. Also on a sidenote this would put at least some fans back in the seats. DO IT NOW GLAZERS
January 10th, 2012 at 10:20 pm
The Bucs need the same thing as our economy, a giant shot of confidence. You get the team players, fan base and community rallying around a movement like Marty Ball. You see some FAs signing because they want to play for MArty, you see everything gelling because the players want to prove their coach can go deep in the playoffs, you see this franchise come back together quickly.
Hiring Marty alone wont sell-out home game. In fact, hiring anyone except Bill Billichek or Urban Meyer wouldn’t guarantee a sell-out. But the FA interest, the slackers being cut, the OC and DC selections and a good PR movement will get us close. Winning the first few games in ferocious fashion will do it. Light’s out Bucs D! Ground and Pound. Run to set-up the pass. C’mon Man, Marty might bring this thing back together.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:13 pm
Honestly, I love what he had to say about this team. He has proven he can make winning teams. When you have a man with that track record who is just craving to have a chance to do the same to your team. GO FOR IT. This is a no brainer.
I have not felt so strongly about our coaching picks before. I am wary of getting to excited until the ink touches the paper. I would hate to be so let down if things don’t work out in this deal.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:17 pm
Great hire if it happens in my opinion.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:23 pm
@Andrew09 Says
That’s an easier fix to be had. There is a bunch of big name RB out there in FA this year.
Plus if for some reason we are not able to get Morris Claiborne in the up coming draft. Trent Richardson is right there for the taking. Instant 3rd upgrade if not taking over the starting spot. In the very least would be competition for LG Blount. Both could benefit from that.
Or we can try to go after LeMichael James from Oregon in round 3 (maybe trade down in 2 can get a couple more picks and still get him). Very good shifty back, and play maker. Would be a nice compliment to Blount’s hard nosed run force.
Either way not something to hard to fix and stay a power running team.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:28 pm
Ok now I’m really convinced for the best reason yet: Eric and I both agree. That may be a first! This is the guy, I can feel it. Also, FYI, Mularkey was just hired by JAX.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:55 pm
I agree too, Marty is the best solution I have heard yet.
Hell, he even has Davin Joseph geeked up.
January 11th, 2012 at 12:09 am
There is nothing i loved more than watching the NY Giants pound the rock at the Falcons with that running game and keep them out of the end zone with that defense. Thats MY kinda football. If thats the type of game this man will bring here, then by all means hire him.
Dont forget a great QB coach!
January 11th, 2012 at 12:46 am
@ Big Marlon B and Real Bucs Fan
Since both of you believe that the way to win in the NFL is to play Marty ball. You just described the Bears, Vikings and Jags. They all have great running backs that they use all day long. Forte and Peterson are hurt and MJD was hurt last year.
The new NFL requires 2 good RB’s and a handful of excellent receivers with good hands. Teams have to be able to score quickly in the NFL. Ground and pound teams traditionally have a hard time scoring over the entire season. The run game works the best with a great passing game. I am not a Marty hater. I still think Billick is the best choice. We need high football I.Q. in the Bucs locker room. I will step down off the soap box now.
January 11th, 2012 at 12:54 am
OK, I’m in. Marty it is. Now to be completely honest, I really don’t care who the HC is…….within reason. If it’s Marty or Sherman, I think we will improve this year. Everybody got an eye opener this time around. I think we will have a favorable draft, I believe we are going to FA this year, I believe the Glazers will spend considerable more than they have in past years, we are going to get senior-level coaches no matter what their names or ages, and I think Dominik grew – he will be a better GM this time around. And we’re going to get all new position coaches picked by senior HCs. So my opinion is that we got better in lots of places, not just the selection of a single HC whoever that may be!
January 11th, 2012 at 1:05 am
@ARealBucsFan,
I’m not a big believer that a coach will help sell out games. It will obviously bring a few extra butts in, but I don’t believe anything on a large scale. However, bringing in some quality free agents will bring in 10 times more fans than a coach. Fans come to watch the players, not the coaches.
January 11th, 2012 at 1:14 am
MTM,
I’m assuming you have never watched a Marty coached team. I have, plenty of times. They don’t just run the ball. They throw it a lot. He has been criticized for being very conservative when protecting a lead, I’ll give you that, but it’s not like he throws the ball 10 times a game. That’s just not an accurate statement, and I’m pretty sure if you have ever watched one of his teams you would know better. In Cleveland, he had Bernie Kosar. Kosar put up big numbers, especially relative to that time period. He also coached Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. Ever heard of them? They’re pretty good.
I was going to lay off of you, but then you made the ridiculous statements comparing Marty ball to the Jags, Vikings, and Bears (although not sure if you realized how stupid that sounds from a Mike Martz offense). The ignorance of that statement should get you banned from ever discussing football with real men. We can, however, have a nice discussion about last night’s episode of The Bachelor.
January 11th, 2012 at 5:06 am
And by the way Thomas, it appears to me that T-Jax plays better when he is high.
January 11th, 2012 at 9:20 am
@MTM
Ground and pound seems to work for the 49ers. i think they placed second in the division.
January 11th, 2012 at 10:36 am
Hawaiian: if the last 10 games didnt prove his incompetence to you nothing will. Did you forget 41-0 to the Falcons before halftime?
I didnt think that was possible.
Get over the pounding Blount fascination, he is a below average NFL tailback, Marty will bring in a legit #1 like a LT.
Blount is a good #2.
I would pleased with Marty just hope that he brings in his son and another top coordinator to pass the torch to.
January 11th, 2012 at 1:41 pm
@Thomas,
Of course I didn’t forget it, I WAS THERE!!! But it doesn’t matter, it’s over. Morris is gone, move on with your life. How long are you going to continue your obsession with him. This is why no one on this board can stand you! Why don’t you understand that? Nobody wants to hear whining and b!tching about the same thing, especially when we have all moved on. Why do you get off on criticizing him repeatedly? Okay, he’s terrible. But he’s not here anymore. Move on buddy.
You won’t be pleased with Marty. You will complain about all the assistants and eventually blame him, the Glazers, and Dominik. That’s your only play in life. You will never be happy. But go ahead and justify your stance some more. I mean, never mind the fact that every single one of us despises your constant repetitive negativity. There’s no way it’s anything you are doing, it must be us.
