Lousy Crop Or Extreme Caution?
January 18th, 2012The Bucs are hardly alone in what feels like a plodding, in-depth search for a head coach. The Raiders and Dolphins are right there with them, and Indianapolis joined the party yesterday.
Obviously, the supply of potentially qualified coaches far exceeds demand, but there doesn’t seem to be much urgency surrounding the candidates. Nobody seems worried about another team stealing anyone out from under them.
This has Joe wondering whether the field is proving to be second rate as it moves through the interview process. On the surface it didn’t look like a great year to be looking for a head coach, but the slow approach of these teams is making Joe think nobody is getting wowed.
Speaking today on the Mike and Mike Show on BSPN radio, former NFL Network insider who defected to the Bristol Soviets, seems to have the same opinion. You can listen here.
“Everybody else is sort of out there. There’s no one that teams are rushing to go hire,” Schefter said.
If, in fact, the Bucs aren’t impressed by their options, then Joe has to think that makes a Marty Schottenheimer more attractive. Why not go with the proven regular season winner if you’re not sure your “lasting-contender” coach is out there.
January 18th, 2012 at 12:28 pm
Get Marty. Rebuild the core of the organization into a winner. In a few years when Marty is done we can look for a hot coach to put us over the top, preferably one of our coordinators.
January 18th, 2012 at 12:35 pm
Wow…was going to look up something and Wikipedia is blacked out in protest. Sheesh!
January 18th, 2012 at 12:35 pm
It appears that Joe is using his media ability to push for Marty.
Curious, where do both Joe’s stand on whom they prefer?
January 18th, 2012 at 12:40 pm
Good for wikipedia. SOPA and PIPA are horrible, and I’m glad they’re raising awareness.
January 18th, 2012 at 12:49 pm
Totally agree Mr. Meh.
Situation is perfect for a guy like Marty.
January 18th, 2012 at 12:49 pm
I think it is interesting that there’s not very much overlap in interest in coaches. If you look at the list that the Bucs have compiled, no other team seems too interested in those candidates (Miami was interested in Zimmer, but that seems to have faded). However the same could be said for the other teams that have/had vacancies this year. Even the flavor of the month, Jeff Fisher, only had two teams interested in him, when there were many more that needed a coach.
As I’ve said before, I am all for Marty, however, no matter who they hire (no Sherman or Childress please), I am glad to see the team isn’t jumping the gun as they did with the last hire.
January 18th, 2012 at 12:51 pm
I agree, No chilly and no sherman.
January 18th, 2012 at 1:32 pm
bucfanjeff:
Not sure what you are getting at. If you believe Team Glazer and Mark Dominik consult Joe in personnel moves, Joe’s got some swampland near Mesa for sale at a bargain price.
Given the original list of candidates, Marty was the best choice, best as in least repulsive. If Joe has been banging the drum for anyone from Day 1, it’s been Tom Clements.
January 18th, 2012 at 1:44 pm
Given the hiring approach to our most recently fired HC, everyone on the list of potential candidates that have been mentioned or interviewed to date is much more qualified than Rah was. Can’t get much worse than a hire with no experience as a defensive coordinator or higher in the NFL. Team Glazer and the boy genius should not be surprised at the results that were delivered.
January 18th, 2012 at 1:45 pm
Just heard that a team is interested in interviewing Mike Tice. What is going on with all these guys that they have to go to this level for a decent head coach?
January 18th, 2012 at 1:56 pm
Mike Tice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 18th, 2012 at 1:56 pm
“If Joe has been banging the drum for anyone from Day 1, it’s been Tom Clements.”
Both Joes?
January 18th, 2012 at 2:07 pm
Marty Schottenheimer will energize the Tampa Fan Base like NO other coach we have interviewed.
I sense the problem is with Mark Dominik, who most likely wants a “yes man” vs the stubborn and sometimes bullheaded Marty.
But just as a good cook is fussy about his ingredients, a good coach wants control over his staff and players.
Still, 14 out of 16 years, Marty Teams are winners.
With possible exception of Zimmer, I don’t see many good candidates out there, Unless they wait on Fazio of the Giants ?
January 18th, 2012 at 2:58 pm
I like both Marty has good connections as far as O/C’s and D/C’s But so does Zimmer i say its out of those two NO to Sherman Chilly Chud

I HAVE BEEN A BUC’S FAN EVER SENSE THEY PLAYED THERE FIRST GAME.
THEY’ER HAVE BEEN A LOT OF MISTAKE MADE IN HARING AND FIRING PLAYERS AND COACHES, I THANK IN ORDER TO KEEP THE PEOPLE INTERRESTED AND HAPPY IN THE BUC’S THEY NEED TO MAKE A VERY GOOD CHOOSE ON A COACH THIS TIME AND GET THE HIM WHAT HE NEEDS TO HAVE A CHANGE TO GO TO THE S.B, AND IF THEY MAKE A BAD CHOOSE ON A PERSON THAT HAS NEVER BEEN A HEAD COACH BEFORE. PEOPLE WILL WANT THE OWNERS TO SALE THE TEAM NEXT TIME. SO THEY BETTER HARE MARTY S………………….
January 18th, 2012 at 3:44 pm

Getting a headache.
January 18th, 2012 at 5:53 pm
lmao eric, you wanted Rah gone, but no matter who we bring in you won’t like it apparently. Find a mate and get over your bottomless depression, Debbie Downer. I’m sure you can find a great guy on J-Date.
January 18th, 2012 at 6:05 pm
I’ll take Chucky back.
January 18th, 2012 at 6:42 pm
Maybe we can hire marty and before he keels over, he can leave a SOP manual on how to actually run a football team. Then the next coach won’t look like such an invalid.
Yeah BigMac, the Glazers should swallow their pride and wine and dine chucky until he comes back. They fired him, not the fans, we deserve a real coach.
January 18th, 2012 at 7:11 pm
Debbie downer?
Ya got me. I can’t respond to that depth of wit.

You tell’em, Mike!
January 19th, 2012 at 12:06 am
Schottenheimer is the way.
January 19th, 2012 at 12:12 am
Seriously let him solidify the team and then if he is ready to retire before we are sick of him then hopefully he will have groomed a successor to take over the reigns. But really its no coincidence his team won the UFL championship(granted the competition was severely limited). The dude inspires people. His age is irrelevant if he is healthy and still lights a fire under players asses. Hell, Ohio State is hiring Urban Meyer to coach their storied franchise with no guarantee he will make it past the first season before he drops dead of a heart attack. Marty is a better bet at his age.
January 19th, 2012 at 12:19 am
The bottom line is the thing that sunk the Bucs season was the lack of clout from the couch. Rah is a good teacher but simply didnt have the clout to hold those young guys accountable when crap hit the fan. Marty is the exact opposite. He is a storied coach who’s age will have that fatherly authority figure effect on these young players. They will respect him the moment he is named coach because he is Marty freakin Schottenheimer. Dude had KC ruling the AFC east for years not to mention the fact that he built that San Diego team too before he was ridiculously fired without cause. Oh yeah he was pretty good in Cleveland too. Better than Belichek was in Cleveland.
I hope the Glazers dont succumb to ageism here. Marty is the man for the job. My only qualifier is if he can bring a good OC with him.
January 19th, 2012 at 12:23 am
Schotteneimer as head coach with someone like Sherman or Childress as OC would be just the what the Bucs need in terms of experience at the head coach and coordinator positions. Spags would be awesome for DC but its looking like he’s off the market if the Bucs dont pull the trigger fast.
January 19th, 2012 at 8:23 am
