Another BSPN Voice Predicts Mike Sherman
January 20th, 2012Earlier today, Joe brought word that ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas claimed of all the known candidates for the opening left by jettisoned head coach Raheem Morris, Mike Sherman was the best candidate.
Add his colleague “The Professor,” John Clayton to the mix.
In speaking with “The Fabulous Sports Babe” yesterday, Clayton said he too thinks the next Bucs coach will be Sherman.
John Clayton: I still think Mike Sherman is the man. He is the opposite of Raheem Morris in that he has experience and he will bring discipline. I think that’s the way it’s going to go. But waiting this long, I thought they were going to get Mike Nolan [as defensive coordinator] but with the options for coordinators dwindling, that is not a good thing.
Fabulous Sports Babe: I get the feeling people around the league feel the Bucs job is not a good job?
Clayton: Mmmm… I don’t know about that. A quarterback a lot of the time makes a job good and the Bucs have one in Josh Freeman. Most good jobs are based on a quarterback. From that standpoint. that makes it a very good job. Is it that much better than St Louis? St. Louis has Sam Bradford and Jeff fisher could come in and take control of his team and maybe hand pick his own general manager. Having a quarterback makes it an attractive job and I believe the Bucs have the quarterback.
Sports Babe: Handpicking the general manager, is that why Fisher didn’t interview here because Mark Dominik was in place?
Clayton: I will be honest, I don’t know that Tampa Bay called. It would be presumptuous of saying Jeff Fisher turned them down. Maybe they were scared of the $7 million price tag and didn’t put him in the mix when they are interviewing former coaches? To my knowledge, they never put in a bid.
Sports Babe: I have a feeling from the fans, because you didnt pursue Fisher, you once again are going on the cheap and looking for a guy begging for a job.
Clayton: Let’s put it this way: what they need to do is to hire a former head coach and get some discipline. They need to go in that direction. Hiring an assistant is taking a stab in the dark. You are going cycles of 40 games. At this stage, Bucs fans need to have something they know whether Mike Sherman and the system he worked with in Green Bay or Marty Schottenheimer and the system that worked in several places. The fans need some certainty. I think Sherman will be a fine hire.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:03 pm
Please say it ain’t so. That is all.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:05 pm
Clayton, you sir are a complete moron. Sherman is a horrible coach. Hire Marty.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:07 pm
This goes to show you how dumb bucs fans are. All of the sports analyst are saying Sherman would be a good hire and i agree, he has experience and a wining record in the NFL.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:12 pm
If it is down to two I predict its Sherman and Zimmer.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:16 pm
Chilly too has a winning record in the NFL. It takes more than that.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:17 pm
Where do you think Yasuckas got it from the guy is a mule.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:21 pm
Upon the selection of Mr. Sherman it will be confirmation that we have the worst GM in the NFL, IMO.
As well as brain dead owners.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:25 pm
Maybe Sherman with Clements as an OC? Does not seem like the worse thing to me.
Not sure who would be the DC.
The problem is every one wants someone to come that will make you go YES!! and there isn’t anyone who will do that.
Just realized that if Philbin is getting the Dolphins job Clements might be offered OC in GB or Miami as well.
crap
January 20th, 2012 at 5:28 pm
@ Clayburn
Sherman’s winning record was posted while he had one of the best QBS to ever play the game in his prime. Not to say he’s a complete slouch, as someone could mess that up, but having that QB in place does make Coaching a little easier.
I am a Marty fan, and he’s had good QBs, but none that would be considered “Elite”, at least not while he was coaching them (Montana played for him after he would be considered elite, Rivers and Brees played for him before they were considered elite). Even Kosar, while very good, I doubt was ever considered a top 5 (Montana, Marino, Kelly, Elway, Simms and Cunningham should be higher). Marty would be able to take advantage of what Freeman can do, make the team tougher, and less prone to mental mistakes, those things alone should get us to .500. The right schemes (Offensively and Defensively) and a couple key additions (not necessarily top flight FAs) could make us a playoff team.
Bring in Marty!!!!
January 20th, 2012 at 5:38 pm
The more this goes on, the more I’m inclined to want and up and coming OC or DC rather than a recycled guy who has not coached in years.
Zimmer? Like him. Sherman? Not so much but have to admit I could be absolutely wrong. Have never heard the man interviewed.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:53 pm
Clayton
“But waiting this long, I thought they were going to get Mike Nolan [as defensive coordinator] but with the options for coordinators dwindling, that is not a good thing.”
I could not agree more.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:55 pm
Zimmer please.
January 20th, 2012 at 5:56 pm
This is starting to stink, more and more. Dominik and Sherman have the same agent.
The “coaching search” was just a Sham, it would appear.
LOL, Jeff Fisher and Wade Phillips must have known Sherman was their guy.
Regardless, if we hire some decent O and D coordinators, I am OK with this scenario. I wanted Marty though ….
January 20th, 2012 at 6:05 pm
Clayton is rarely right about the Bucs.
Watch this be the first time. 🙁
January 20th, 2012 at 6:08 pm
I would rather have Jon Gruden’s oldest son as HC than Mike freeking Sherman.
January 20th, 2012 at 6:18 pm
Looks like I’m wasting my money………AGAIN…on season tickets!
When will these people get a CLUE?
January 20th, 2012 at 6:22 pm
@Apple Roof Cleaning
Because the Glazers and Dominick are so tight-lipped, the media types are having to try to make educated guesses.
That’s all this is. Clayton is making the same leap to judgement that you are. No basis in fact.
That said, we could certainly do worse than Sherman. But we can also do better. I want Clements or Marty. PLEASE!
January 20th, 2012 at 6:23 pm
Not really a fan of Martyball and the gleam speech, but sherman makes me want to puke.
January 20th, 2012 at 6:35 pm
Marty or Zimmer
January 20th, 2012 at 6:37 pm
Please no Sherman.
How can you not make it in college football then all of a sudden be a nfl head coach candidate? I understand he had some success I the nfl in the past. Key word PAST. And I’m tired of the west coast offense. Let’s bring on zimmer and Clements as OC.
January 20th, 2012 at 6:38 pm
…
Maybe you should wait and see before you make a claim like that.
January 20th, 2012 at 6:41 pm
Clayton’s head looks like a light bulb with glasses on. If I were showing his photo I’d place an image of a light bulb beside his photo. “Unlit” of course.
January 20th, 2012 at 6:49 pm
Worst part if its true what waste all this time with “interviews”? Missing out on quality coordinators, scouting, and making the process look like a gong show. CLEARLY the owners have little regard for fan opinion and are marching to there own drum. Making the situation even more painful is the fact he was very average at A&M and no one has even considered him for a coordinator position. If this was your choice from the start and you wasted the fans time and getting their hopes up with false interviews is just wrong and shows how clueless and lost the front office is. Clements is the right man at the right time, or you want old school? MARTY!!
January 20th, 2012 at 6:53 pm
Hold on now…who knows the reasons he failed in college ball? It could be a number of reasons.
He had success in the NFL, and if he gets the job, he COULD have success again.
I prefer someone else, but I think many are misjudging the guy.
January 20th, 2012 at 6:56 pm
This is a panic attack, nothing more. The scouting is still happening.
And just because we miss out on a couple coordinators, that doesn’t mean we’ll end up with a bad one. The Glazers took their time with Dungy…I wouldn’t say Monte was bad.
January 20th, 2012 at 7:23 pm
Billick, Zimmer, Philbin, Clements all sound good to me.
Whomever it is, get Del Rio as DC.
January 20th, 2012 at 7:39 pm
Just read on nfl.com that Dolphins hired Philbin. We better move forward fast.
January 20th, 2012 at 7:43 pm
Take Philbin off the list – hired by Dolphins as HC.
January 20th, 2012 at 7:52 pm
Regardless of who gets the gig, how much worse can it get?
January 20th, 2012 at 7:54 pm
Bye bye Philbin: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/20/dolphins-hire-joe-philbin-as-head-coach/
January 20th, 2012 at 8:00 pm
Yet another day, yet another hire from one of the canidates we interivewed….Joe Philban to the Fins as HC…I am sure Tom C will go as he OC……Matt Flynn sure to follow…..tick tock………..tick tock Bucs!!! come on….just get Marty in here and call it a day………..pretty please
January 20th, 2012 at 8:02 pm
@ A REAL Bucs Fan
I hate to admit it (because I often don’t) but I actually agree. Monte was on NOBODY’S radar back in the day, and he may be one of the top DC’S ever. I think Zimmer is a lock for a second interview next week….and if the Glazer boys feel the same way, then I’m sure they’ve asked him who he’d like to have for his coordinators……and if they’re taking their time, then those coordinators probably aren’t on anyone elses radar either. I think Clements is probably someone they’re targeting for OC with Zim….(wishful thinking)…..Chilly was most likely nothing more than an interview to figure out what the hell went wrong with the Vikings when he left and what he’d do different in hindsight, because THAT team looked an AWFUL LOT like this one….Sherman was an interview to see how he went about developing a talented, yet unrefined, Brett Favre who looked a LOT like Freeman does now….Marty, I think, was a legit interview just in case…..Gray was most likely being evaluated for a possible DC position with an extra “Asst. HC” to get him away from the Titans, but most likely just fishing cuz their D wasn’t all that spectacular. Philbin…not so sure about…I mean if I had Aaron Rodgers, Jermichael Finley, Jennings and Nelson, I could probably draw plays in the dirt and be successful……with all that said, there’s still a HUGE possibility that the Glazer boys will stay true to form and NOBODY will even have a clue who the hire is until the impromptu press conference…….
January 20th, 2012 at 8:16 pm
I love how people were pissed when the Bucs quickly snatched an “up and comer”, and are now pissed that they are taking their time with retreads. There is no satisfaction with some of these posters.
January 20th, 2012 at 8:17 pm
I was really hoping for Zimmer as HC/DC with Clements as OC/Assistant HC, but now with Philbin in Miami, it might take more than an OC/AHC position to lure Clements away.
I just don’t get good vibes from Sherman. I don’t have anything tangible to finger and say this is why I don’t want him as coach from a fan’s perspective, but he just rubs me the wrong way.
Maybe its the fact that at a big 12 powerhouse school he couldnt muster a better than 50% record, but some guys just aren’t cut out for college and are better suited as pros. IDK
Or maybe its simply the fact that all the BSPN Honks are pushing for Sherman. Maybe thats why I have a bad feeling!!! 😉
January 20th, 2012 at 8:59 pm
Big Picture Guy,
I’m no Sherman guy, but college coaching is more closely related to recruiting than actual coaching. Three seasons is not enough to show what a coach can do in college anyways. Texas A-n-M was way stronger when he left than when he got there, besides that, he had to get through an opening 4-8 record that brought down his record as well as a highly touted and recruited QB (Jarrod Johnson) that was eventually benched in favor of a WR (Ryan Tannehill) that Sherman helped turn into a fringe 1st round pick in a mere two seasons.
Anyway, there are tons of good NFL coaches that weren’t much better than .500 in college and had good winning percentages in the NFL (Bill Walsh, Mariucci, Jim Caldwell, Dennis Green) and other good college coaches that sucked in the NFL (Spurrier, Dennis Erickson, Petrino, Rich Brooks, and about a zillion others).
January 20th, 2012 at 9:01 pm
Tom Clements might be more inclined to move up to OC in Green Bay now that Philbin is out of the way… or perhaps he really wants to call plays and go somewhere else.
Either way, I would have loved to have Pete Carmichael be given a chance to interview.
As it stands now, I prefer Rob Chudzinski as HC and and Ron Meeks as DC.
January 20th, 2012 at 9:14 pm
Maybe old news already but fins got philbin…
Dear glazers and dom,
Really appreciate the extensive search for the next hc, but could hurry up and make a move! More and more teams are dumping coaches and staff members and we could be left with average or canidates with no experience.
January 20th, 2012 at 9:26 pm
Please Please Just say no…..
Glazers pinching pennies, Dom doing his thing following the company line, and Shermy….the guy that had it all in place, couldn’t get to the next level, and left the Packers with someone else to make the hard Favre decision and a vastly underperforming team.
Just what the club needs…..to be the falcons practice squad, the Saints doll, and Cam Newtons play toy for the next five years …..pass the bottle and be thankful the weather is good during November and December for other Sunday activities.
January 20th, 2012 at 9:30 pm
So if Philbin was interviewed and took the Fins job that fast what does that tell us?? I know some of our famous GM posters have the answer. So let’s hear it.
January 20th, 2012 at 9:49 pm
Guys, remember it’s FREAKING TEXAS A&M. They’ve program has never really been known for success. In fact, they really suck.
You guys are way to afraid of this guy, and I don’t understand why. If we can get a 10 win season with Raheem, I’m sure we’ll do fine with Sherman. He’s much better than Rah.
But Marty and Zimmer are my two favorites.
January 20th, 2012 at 10:03 pm
Glad all you Sherman supporters have been watching the Packers closely for years….
I have been. My wife is a life long Packer fan, and I spend months in Wisconsin every year for nearly 20 years talking with Packer fans and getting the “happenings”.
Having Sherman leave was one of the best things to happen to them in the last 10 years. It happened just before TT drafted Aaron Rodgers. If he hadn’t left, doubt they would have drafted AR. And Shermy left them over the salary cap. He never developed a QB. He never got a team focused to win the biggest games. He was a poor “bench coach”. He wasn’t even average….look at the team, for goodess sake. It consistently underachieved.
If he comes here, pain will follow. I’d almost bet the fan base will continue to deteriorate as the team founders, and the G boys will look to LA if someone else doesn’t beat them to it.
January 20th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
BTW…TT dropped Shermy a year after he took over as GM. It didn’t take him long to figure out that Shermy wasn’t a “quality coach” to lead his “rebuilding program” in GB.
January 20th, 2012 at 10:52 pm
Sherman would be a mistake…..big time
January 20th, 2012 at 11:20 pm
We need Mike Zimmer. He doesn’t take crap but is also your friend. But he keeps his buisness and social life separate. He will be your best friend off the field but if you mess up or don’t take it seriously on the field or in practice. He is known to chew you a new one. That is what this immature team needs. And our defense is why we lost so many games. We couldn’t stop anyone. That is our biggest need and issue to be resolved IMO.
And Mel BS Jr. says we are getting Richardson with the 5th pick in the draft. Is he serious??? One we don’t draft RBs early since Warrick Dunn. Secondly, if Mo Claiborne, Justin Blackmon, or Matt Kalil is there…that will be our pick. I truly believe Claiborne will be there at #5 because typically DBs fall farther than they should. That sets up perfect for us!
January 20th, 2012 at 11:26 pm
We should also call Cleveland and see if they are interested in Josh Freeman. Try to get either the #4 and #22 picks or #4 and their second round pick. We have a shot at Blackmon and Claiborne. We could sign Matt Flynn in FA which begins in March and the draft is in April. Have a lineup of Flynn, Blackmon, Mike Williams, Benn, Parker/Briscoe. And we could draft LaMichael James in the 2nd round and with Clevelands 2nd round pick draft a much needed safety. The kid from Oklahoma State should still be there. We would have 4 new starters and a QB who has learned under Aaron Rodgers for years now. We would instantly be MUCH better on paper. IF I was GM, this is what I would shoot for. Also, I would sign Dewayne Bowe. That would allow Benn to be our #4 or #3 if Williams doesn’t step up. Also, there is several DBs that would be great on our team. This FA offseason should be awesome. Glazers spend your damn money you money hungry scallywags!!!
January 20th, 2012 at 11:41 pm
@FunkyxMunkey
I’m still in full support of Josh Freeman and think he should stay here, but damn, it would hurt if we saw Flynn and RGIII go on to have great seasons/careers and Josh Freeman played bad again next year.
And that scenario of yours is totally unrealistic. You think CLE would trade even ONE of their picks for Freeman when they’re in a perfect position to draft Griffin (#4)?
January 21st, 2012 at 12:51 am
If we go with a proven HC what does Sherman have over Marty as a leader???? I just dont get the Glazers apparent fascination with Sherman. Heres a point I am sure brought up but if Sherman could not succeed with college kids why does he look so good giuding the Bucs whom the Glazers have practically relegated to an older college team?? At least Marty has shown great leadership everywhere he has been. Sherman gets fired at A&M and is the guy to lead this immature bunch??? Well once again the Glazers will get a cheap coach (sigh…….)
January 21st, 2012 at 1:04 am
Oh yes and Joe hopefully Clayton is once again full of BSPN!!!!!!!!
January 21st, 2012 at 2:07 am
Does anyone here like 1040? It seems like that station has taken an anti-Tampa stance on everything. Every time I tune in they are always negative. They even play Yankees games on that station. They rub me the wrong way, especially the “Babe”.
January 21st, 2012 at 2:10 am
John Clayton sucks by the way. He so irrelevant now and I do not know why ESPN insists on showing him on TV. Maybe for the same reason why Chirs Berman is still on there? I will say that I miss the Salsibury-Clayton fights though.
January 21st, 2012 at 2:53 pm
@Patrick
If you really believe RG3 will be there at 4 then you might need some help. I believe the Rams will draft him at #2 and trade Bradford to Washington for the 6th pick in the draft. IF that scenario doesn’t go down then best believe another team will trade with either the Rams or Vikings to get him knowing Cleveland will draft him. And my scenario is a draft day deal. Unlike last season. Players can be traded for picks again this season. Who would you rather have…Josh Freeman or Colt McCoy or any of the other QBs besides Luck and RG3 in the draft. Freeman sounds great out of that choice.
I doubt my scenario will happen. But that would be our best move. Their 1st pick and their second round pick for Freeman. 4 starters versus 2. I love that. And we really need it. We have a ton of holes. IF we don’t trade Freeman and Claiborne is gone, look to trade down if possible!!!
January 21st, 2012 at 3:50 pm
Let’s face it our ownership sucks. We will never be successful until we have ownership that makes this team top priority. Ever since the Glazers bought Man U, our team has sucked. We don’t spend money, we will not be in playoffs until we do. We are losing out signing great coaches daily. I will not spend another dime with the Bucs until they do. Glazers sell the team to someone who cares!
