Jaguars Defense “Cooked”
December 8th, 2011This is Greg Olson’s dream come true.
Allergic to using his best offensive weapon (LeGarrette Blount) and infatuated with throwing the ball early and often no matter that his passing game has sputtered all season, the thing that lights up the eyes of an offensive coordinator is when a defense can’t so much as breathe on a quarterback much less touch a signal-caller.
That apparently is the case with the Jags defense, per Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union.
Regardless of whether the Bucs start Freeman or backup Josh Johnson, the Jaguars need to get better pressure up front. And they have to do it even though they are short three defensive ends.
John Chick went on injured reserve on Tuesday and both Matt Roth (concussion) and Aaron Kampman (hamstring) weren’t on the field for practice Wednesday. Interim coach Mel Tucker said they are day to day.
“We’re going to have to get creative with the guys we have,” linebacker Paul Posluszny said.
So what does this all mean? The Bucs maybe get Blount eight touches, never mind that the Jags have a better pass defense than the Ravens or Jets.
Don’t fear Bucs fans, it’s quite possible you will see the weekly Arrelious Benn’d-around play by midway through the second quarter. That should keep the Jags defense honest.

If I see that play one more time I’m throwing Greg Olson through my TV screen.

Hate the “Benn’d-around play”, I just want to punch someone in the face every time I see it. Greg must have found Mike Shula’s old playbook (I mean beverage napkin) in the boxes left over from the old trailer.
December 8th, 2011 at 1:16 pm
I can’t believe we STILL run that stupid bennaround every game.
December 8th, 2011 at 1:40 pm
Bucs won’t beat the Jags on Sunday.
Just come to grips with that now and you’ll be in a much better mood come Sunday afternoon around 4pm.
December 8th, 2011 at 1:41 pm
As far as whether J or Free will play to expoit the Jags, I noted that Rah said he consulted with Dom about that last week.
Could be a little conflict between those two if Rah needs a win, but Dom wants to preserve Freeman for next year.

Don’t get your hopes up, Bucs fans. It’s a mirage over the horizon to believe this team will win again this season. Even the worst teams in the league look to playing the Bucs as a cure to whatever ails them. I don’t care if the Jags are missing 12 defensive ends and have to start their backup QB at that position. They’re still gonna win. Great defense combined with great running attack equals another Bucs loss.

Someone said it best yesterday:
Jags (MJD) 21- Bucs 9 (Barth)
Why won’t Blount get carries. We are not good enough in the passing game to rely on it. Blount is our cash cow.
It is impressive to see how poor our Offensive game plan is. Honestly, it is just down right: predictable, terrible, and uninspiring.
Feed Blount the ball.

Raheem the dream, the savior of our team.
NOT!
December 8th, 2011 at 2:31 pm
Why spoil terrific draft position with a win now. The Colts have a wonderful draft strategy and it’s working to a tee!
December 8th, 2011 at 2:34 pm
Damn Joe … You are giving away the Bucs Secret Play … Now its never gonna work
Maybe Benn can just be our #2 RB .. He is built like one
December 8th, 2011 at 2:42 pm
You can only trade down, if ya have a high draft pick!
I hope we see the “Benn’d around” every quarter this game. Every time we run that play, I just watch the defenses shutter in fear. How can they prepare for such a dynamic and ingenius play?? Especially the way it’s evolved. We used to leave a blocker out there, and pull the guards- it was like a sweep. We once made 7 yards that way.
Now, it’s evolved into a delayed naked reverse. And we give lots of clues that its coming.
We may lose 12 yards when we run it, but I still feel it’s a fearsome weapon! Right Greg?
At least it’s a slow developing play. And every second the offense burns, is one less second I have to spend watching Quincy and Geno impersonating zombies on defense!
December 8th, 2011 at 2:49 pm
Olsen only uses that play to set up 3rd and long. I was looking at some draft sites today, and they have us picking between #5 and #10.

Correction- Olson

Ha ha ha ha ha Raheem just made SI’s “Worst Coaching Hires Since 1984” list.
December 8th, 2011 at 3:47 pm
Man, I’m having dreams of a top 5 pick in every round. 4 and 12 can’t come any faster as far as I’m concerned.
Since we can’t Suck for Luck, how about: Stillborn for Claiborne? Meekly for Kuechly? Imperfect for Burfict? Lay down for Brown? Forgo for Te’o? Withdraw for Upshaw?
Who knows…let’s just get this season over with already.
December 8th, 2011 at 3:50 pm
Maybe even having a goal for the draft is too much to ask of this team. Could be they just suck for the sake of sucking.
December 8th, 2011 at 3:56 pm
FlBoyinDallas- lmao-” stillborn or Claiborne”
First good Buc related laugh I’ve had in a while!
Well, other than watching our Defense! ( drum roll!)
December 8th, 2011 at 3:57 pm
If the season ended today, we would have #10. surely we can lose our last 4 games and move up in the draft. Not sure how Carolina is below us in the draft when they beat us once already.
1) Indianapolis, 0-12
2) Minnesota, 2-10
3) St. Louis, 2-10
4) Jacksonville, 3-9
5) Washington, 4-8
6) Carolina, 4-8
7) Philadelphia, 4-8
8) Miami, 4-8
9) Cleveland, 4-8
10) Tampa Bay, 4-8
11) Arizona, 5-7
12) Seattle, 5-7
13) Buffalo, 5-7
14) Kansas City, 5-7
15) San Diego, 5-7
December 8th, 2011 at 4:07 pm
If we can’t suck bad enough to get the 5th pick in the draft I will consider the second half of this season to be a total failure.
December 8th, 2011 at 4:13 pm
as bad as the offense has been it is leaps and bounds ahead of historically bad defense.
Olson is not the problem, nobody frequently runs there power halfback on 2 and 15 or 3 and 12 which is a common down and distance for our offense due to stupid penalties (often by Winslow). I used to love k2 I have grown to want him off the team, like Talib, because these are the type of players that lead to this complete and total lack of discipline.
I predict: that the horrible Blaine Gabbert will have a career day Sunday.
December 8th, 2011 at 4:14 pm
Jax has the #3 pass D in the league…..I’m not expecting much from Free/JJ this week
December 8th, 2011 at 5:29 pm
I just had a realization !!!!!
Olson is setting teams up for the Ultimate Benn’d around FAKE !!!!!!
When we finally run the fake the entire Defense will be on the wrong side of the field … I finally understand
But I think we have about 7 more attempts before we see the fake.
December 8th, 2011 at 5:49 pm
My thing is, if you want Benn to get the ball more, do what the Vikings do with Harvin, line his ass up in the backfield and hand it off or throw a swing pass in the flat. But for god sakes stop with the Benn’d-around, also that horrible WR screen needs to stop as well.
December 8th, 2011 at 6:30 pm
@ Thomas 2.2 – “because these are the type of players that lead to this complete and total lack of discipline”. What leads to a complete and total lack of discipline is a coaching staff and organization that ALLOW them act that way with little to no consequence. Again, would like to see how a different approach might work, though with those two it might be too late.
And Joe, that play has gone from the Benn-around to the Benn-over. Team’s definitely getting scr.wed every time they run it.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:52 pm
@ Thomas 2.2
I give you credit for hanging in there with your beliefs on this site. Leading up to the season you were pretty much the only pessimist on this site stating that our coaching was horrible and GMC was a bust. Everyone ripped you left, right and center and said you were an idiot.
For some odd reason, I dont seem to notice the same amount of hostility heading your way. I wonder why ???????????????

Ha, good article. Classic Greg Olson
