Behind The Bench: Leaders And Numb Players

December 19th, 2011

One of Joe’s favorite features on Buccaneers.com is the one labeled “Behind the Bench.” Essentially, NFL Films cameras capture cool stuff on the sidelines and give fans a glimpse of camera angles of game action seen nowhere else.

Joe highly recommends this week’s edition from the Bucs-Cowboys game. Just click here.

Here are Joe’s highlights/lowlights, depending on your perspective:

1) Watch Raheem Morris talk to the defense and Keith Millard deliver the most basic fundamental reminder to the defensive line.
2) Watch Dezmon Briscoe get drilled by Mike Jenkins at the goal line when Briscoe stopped running full speed as he approached the end zone. (If only the Bucs had kept running at Dez Bryant in the end zone).
3) See Frank Okam and Demar Dotson stay motionless and emotionless after the Bucs score a touchdown while others around them cheer.
4) Watch Albert Haynesworth demand the defense rally around him for what seems like a motivational speech on the way.

Feel free to offer your impressions in the comments.

The expression and and body language of Barber at the end says SO much. For a guy like him to have played with the likes of Brooks, Sapp, Lynch, and punishing teams, this has to be so frustrating for the GOAT.

Millard – I am not sure he has been the answer along the line. He was suppose to be great. Not sure I have seen it. If he was that could why was he available? Sapp had high praise for the guy but that’s not saying much as far a endorsements go.

  2. ClayBURN94 Says:

Big dog saying its not raheems fault, its all of the players fault. LOL SMH…

  3. Buddhaboy Says:

I thought the exact same thing about Ronde walking off the field. You could almost hear his saying, “i cant believe i have to play with all of these no talent hacks, wusses, babies…… ”

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME SOMEONE ON THE DEFENSE MADE A BIG HIT? A JUMPING OUT OF YOUR SEAT HIT…….

  4. Bobby Says:

You mean without it being attached to a 15 yd penalty???

  5. Niko (The Optimist) Says:

I really don’t care if we fire Raheem Morris. Just make sure you give him an offensive Coordinator, a defensive coordinator, and some veteran free agents. Look at Albert Hanesworth. That should be a lesson, on what a guy with his experience can do for these young kids that are tuning out the coaching, all the coaching, they are getting. This team is way too young.

  6. Niko (The Optimist) Says:

Buddhaboy, Big Dog makes sense. you can’t argue with him.

  7. Chris FWC Says:

Wow! Ronde DID have that look! Glad to see #95 doing veteran things. Okam and Dotson didn’t react because they won’t be a Buc next season.

  8. Bucfan34 Says:

Buddhaboy, I agree completely with Justin and Steve. Sileo has big time guests on his show every single day (Kosar, Simms, CBS writers, NFL Network guys, Otis Smith), Ron and Ian run a different show but damn they’re funny, Steve brings on that Landry clown and local lawyers or gamblers who bring nothing to the table. Justin is probably the most sports knowledgable person at that station and is damn hilarious. They’re going to lose him to a national show or something real soon.

  9. Leighroy Says:

Niko, I can argue with him. Big Dog kind of makes sense, but just bc his argument has logic, doesn’t mean he is right. Its a fair argument that no veterans, no offseason really has hurt this team in a perfect storm kind of way, but the timeline for such an argument doesn’t add up.

How did we get to 4-2 beating the saints and falcons if the offseason and youth is such a problem now, but wasn’t then? Shouldn’t the team be IMPROVING, not getting worse if that is the case? And during this losing streak, losses have been caused by issues that have been issues for the last 3 years.

Maybe a new coach won’t change things, and maybe one will. Who knows. I think any change will set us back a year or 2, so the question you have to ask ourselves as fans is can we deal with more crap for 1-2 years with a new coach having to transition and bring in his guys. Let’s face it, we are not just some quick fix away from the superbowl.

Big Dog also won’t let people who disagree with him get a word in edge wise, it really pisses me off. If you disagree with him, even in a civil way, he immediately starts yelling and tries to cut away a caller’s credibility. He’s turning into a shock-jock who is just a contrarian for contrarian sake.

There is someone else who is that way on BSPN, his name starts with “sk” and ends in “ip bayless,” and we all know how much of a turd he is. I’ve listened to him for a while, but “The Dean of tampa radio” has fallen far.

His show has gone from talk radio, to yell and hang up on the listener radio.

After the Bucs got the Game closer … One of the series we had a chance to force a 3 and out and make it like 3rd and 13 and #26 completely Suckholed the tackle and just kind of fell out of the way and Haynesworth straight up RAN across the field full bore to get the WR out of bounds.

    That was impressive.

#26 is as Good as Piscitelli. No Better .. No Worse He would be the 1st guy I cut.

  11. Buddhaboy Says:

The telling thing for me this year was the san fran game. We went in there last year and completely dominated them, and shut them out,(even donald penn scored a td….. less than one year later, we go back there and we were literally emabarassed. We shouldnt have been on the same field….What was the final score, 41-0 holy crap

SO what changed in one year? All san fran did was bring in a new coach, and brought back an underachieving quarterback…..We have regressed sooo much since that game last year, shoot, just look at number 5…..enough said.

  12. K2theSoldier Says:

It makes me really really happy to see Big Albert taking on a leadership role. That’s really awesome to see.

  13. RED MAN Says:

Aqib to I.R……wonder if he’s played his last down as a Buc

  14. Buddhaboy Says:

Raheem just said “fast, hard, consistent, smart”, seriously..

  15. BucfaninMI Says:

Exactly buddhaboy, this team has some talent. This is very fixable, look at SF one year later, they have a chance for home field and clinched two weeks ago! What the hell happened? Do our players ride the short bus?

  16. Macabee Says:

You know I watch this series every week and its kinda got that Baghdad Bob slant to it. I always go away feeling like we won the game!

  17. Bob Says:

Having the Bucs play on Saturday gave me a chance to watch other games on Sunday. What really struck me was how fast, quick and exciting other teams played, particularly the Patriots, and how slow and boring the Bucs seem this year, even when they were winning. Something major is wrong here, and it’s not just Raheem.

  18. BucfaninMI Says:

Haynesworth shouldn’t have had to tell them to huddle up more than once! And going over fundamentals mid- game? I thought they were professionals! I don’t know if it’s coaches or players, but somebody needs to kick some ass around one Buc palace!! Thats why Gruden was successful.

  19. TurnThePage Says:

Will Niko still be an optimist with a new coaching regime? Or will he be bitter that his boy Rah was fired?

  20. thibs5599 Says:

loving Haynesworth at the end, now if only the young guys would put in some effort. Clearly that is not happening this year so hopefully they can start fresh in the off season and put this year behind them, I really don’t want to be a bottom barrel team anymore

  21. TurnThePage Says:

You know what I’m tired of? I am tired of the players getting blamed for poor coaching. Even Raheem stands at the podium and blames his players and never himself.

Gruden and Dungy would always take the heat for preparing the players time and time again. All Raheem does is blame the players.

The players are getting ruined by this sad excuse for a coaching staff.

It is not the players fault that Raheem can’t call a defense. It is not the players fault that Raheem fails to coach them during practice. It is not the players fault that Raheem has NO BUSINESS being a head coach in the National Football League.

  22. Jrock Says:

I thought the same thing when Okam and Dotson just stood there after the TD. Okam is better than that, Dotson could be, and it took me aback to see the total lack of emotion in them.

This team is ready for the offseason already, frankly I don’t know what’s more broken – the players or the coaching. One thing’s for sure, we hit rock bottom weeks ago, and then someone tossed us a shovel..

There is a big difference with the 49ers. They have some veterans for leadership. It’s nice seeing htem doing well too.

It IS the fault of the players…and of the coaches. There is no reason to limit pointing the finger to just one reason when there are a multitude of them.

As far as your other comments, just HOW do you know Raheem doesn’t coach them during practice???

And as far as Raheem mentioning the players…they should be called out. He’s not the first coach to do it and he won’t be the last.

We witnessed in the video that there are players on the team who just don’t care. Those same players will be cut in the off season for it, unless they get things in gear…either by Morris or a new head coach.

    On Ronde at the end…
I’m willing to bet negative thoughts about his teammates or coaches were not going through his mind. He’s not like that.

More likely he was thinking about how he had just finished his last game in Raymond James.

  24. Rickster07 Says:

Its not the players fault this team sucks.
Tell that to san fran. Harbaugh completly changed that franchise with roughly the same personell singletary had.
You need coaching to transform the talent in the players….

  25. Pete Dutcher Says:

The concept of “young team” is completely over your head, lol.

  26. Patrick Says:

“getting a new coach will set us back 1-2 years”

oh really? I’m thinking that it would help us progress and there would be a different attitude and culture put in that locker room, unlike the one we have now. Someone like Jeff Fisher for example would kick all the bums and thugs out of here.

Look at all the other teams that have immediate turnarounds with 1st season coaches! Sean Payton, Jim Harbough, his brother, Mike Smith, even Ron Rivera should be mentioned because of what he’s done with Newton and that Panthers offense. That team has a brighter future than we do right now and they were 2-14 last year while we were 10-6.
