Players Will Head To Raheem’s “Woodshed”
November 15th, 2011So what are the tangible consequences for Buccaneers players after the shameful home-field beating at the hands of the Texans on Sunday?
The answer is two practices in pads this week, rarely allowed under the new labor agreement, and a head coach that expects to hear collisions. Raheem Morris explained his changed mentality on The Raheem Morris Show on WDAE-AM 620 last night.
“I’ll take these guys into the woodshed, so to speak, this week,” Raheem said. “We’ll go to practice and we’ll put our pads on, and we’ll compete in practice and get these guys to play a simulated game. … Obviously you’ve got to change some of your preparation when that happens. …
“Before, you know, everybody’s trying to worry about preservation and keeping your team healthy. This week we’re going to go more with a physical mentality. We’re going to work on the physicality of our football team.
“Gotta clean up your sense of urgency. And you gotta somehow simulate it in practice. The only way to simulate sense of urgency in practice is to put the pads on and go out there and do some things a little bit different, and play a little bit harder and make it a little bit tougher to make people concentrate more.”
Joe can only hope the Bucs figure out how to tackle by actually doing it during these physical practices. Things surely coudn’t get much worse in that area.
And receivers and cornerbacks holding on to balls would be a good thing, too. Watching the Bucs-Texans game again, Joe saw the lost interception by Aqib Talib and the clear drop in the end zone by Dezmon Brizcoe, and knows the Texans should have led only 13-7 at halftime.
Regardless, something has to get through to the Bucs. If they can’t at least play sound football in Green Bay, Joe’s going to have to wonder if they’ve given up on their coaches.

The takeaway I took from being at the game was total apathy on the part of the players. This kind of behavior does not correct itself by “putting on pads.” Raheem needs to understand he has a crisis on his hands and the 10-6 record from last year screams underperformance which reflects directly on the head coach. I would say several high profile benchings need to occur. In my opinion Talib is just going through the motions. On both touchdowns his effort was less than acceptable. If Raheem doesn’t straighten out our “shutdown corner” he will not keep the respect of his players. His dealings with Winslow have been similar. He needs to distance himself somewhat and crack some heads. Will he do this? No I don’t think he will but time will tell.
November 15th, 2011 at 12:34 pm
Why didn’t this happen WEEKS ago?
November 15th, 2011 at 12:42 pm
originally i thought the lock out had some blame to this but this far in the season they shouldn’t be playing like this. We have had two solid games this year at home aginst the Falcons and Saints. The rest of the games have been ugly even our two other wins haven’t been pretty. I hope they can turn it around as it seems we shot ourselves in the foot this year and that the playoff picture is looking more distant as the weeks go bye. Its hard to be optimistic this week playing the Packers when they have been playing lights out and we have only shown up two games this year.
November 15th, 2011 at 12:47 pm
Joe, is it possible the new CBA, which has less padded practices, will hurt younger teams going forward? A trend worth monitoring.
November 15th, 2011 at 12:55 pm
At least he’s having the right reaction. How can you let a team thrash you like that at home? That’s not going to solve the blackout issue.
November 15th, 2011 at 12:58 pm
I was saying that the bucs needed to put all of the second stringers in, at least on defense. Look, sean jones sucks, black sucks, talib sucks at least this season, …..Rattle some heads. Lets see what asante can do, diles, etc……These guys are complacent……Where the eff has myron lewis been for 2 years…if he cant play, find someone that can. I guarantee ahmad black would at least try….give them a shot. These guys blow squirrel nuts.
November 15th, 2011 at 12:59 pm
No need to Raheem. Sorry, but they’ve been taken to the wood shed by opponents!
November 15th, 2011 at 1:04 pm
I’m really glad Raheem is finally making his players take off their underwear and put their big boy pads on.
November 15th, 2011 at 1:05 pm
of course the team has given up on the coaches. You could see it Sunday. It will be hard to crack down now, since you have been everyone’s buddy for two years now.
November 15th, 2011 at 1:07 pm
i am sick of looking at aqib. Lets play the rook…..That boy from FIU
November 15th, 2011 at 1:17 pm
This such pathetic coach speak. I hate hearing raheem’s interviews and press conferences. He should have come out all Denny Green, that’s what is needed. If I were coach, I would definitely bench Black, Hayes, Jones, and Talib. I would put them all in pretty little pink skirts all week for practice and run nothing but Oklahoma Drills all week long.
November 15th, 2011 at 1:21 pm
the players are lol cause they are not responsible ……the coach is. what a mess
November 15th, 2011 at 1:34 pm
I like Raheem .. But the Bucs must evaluate the situation with Jeff Fisher on the sidelines. The guy had some down seasons in Tenessee to go with good seasons but the guy is a Hell of a Coach.
November 15th, 2011 at 1:34 pm
the rock star already declared this is the most physical team in bucs history. and the rock star is never wrong.
November 15th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
There is no accountability. Look what Reid did with Jackson. He was taking plays off, missed a meeting . Reid deactivates him for last weeks game. Rah is a joke. Glasers don’t care because they have a d coordinator and the cheapest head coach in the league for the price of one. Doesn’t get any better in their eyes. It really seems like Rah is a friend of the players instead of the coach. There is no fear of loosing their job. We keep hearing the same tired excuses. Heads need to roll to get the players attention. Sorry to see it has gotten to this point but WTF.
November 15th, 2011 at 1:56 pm
I’m sure they’re quaking in their boots. 2 padded practices? The horror!
November 15th, 2011 at 2:02 pm
Discipline.
That can come from any head coach.
“Have a seat ________, tell me when you’re ready to play and be damn sure you’re right.”
November 15th, 2011 at 2:25 pm
That is the exact reason I like Raheem Morris as head coach of this young football team. Also, on another note, bad decision to bring in Haynesworth, could impact the defense negatively with his attitude.
November 15th, 2011 at 2:28 pm
Oh, maybe its a typo? Maybe he said Im taking them to the wool shed, instead? That would make more sense!
November 15th, 2011 at 2:54 pm
bucfanjeff:
Reminds Joe of a favorite Bobby Knight quote about motivation:
“Bench” is the best motivation in the world. Bench says hello to Ass. Ass meets bench. Bench tells Ass, “you better get off your ass or you will never play again.”
November 15th, 2011 at 3:11 pm
Its too late. They need to fire Raheem Morris. Its disgusting to make a half hour drive, and spend $230 on tickets just to watch a bunch of multimillionaire rookies quit trying after the first play. I get to go to about 2-3 games a year, but think I’ll start saving my money. Haven’t seen that level of quit from a professional sports team.
Bucs should give out white towels at the entrance.
November 15th, 2011 at 3:16 pm
JON L. YOU ARE AN IDIOT, RHEEM HAS DONE NOTHING TO THIS POINT TO SHOW ME THAT HE SHOULD STAY AS A PART OF THIS ORGANIZATION, I GUESS THERE STILL SERVING THAT RHEEM KOOLAIDE SOME PLACE BUT FOR GOD SAKE WALK AWAY AND LOOK AT THE MESS THAT THESE GUYS HAVE CREATED, AND JUST TO NOTE HAYNESWORTH WAS YOUR BEST PLAYER ON DEFENSE THIS PAST WEEK, SO YEAH THAT MAKES SENSE, IT WAS A STUPID MOVE, PLEASE, GET A CLUE. I NOTED ON THIS SITE EARLY IN THE SEASON THAT THE BUCS WERE IN A GEO METRO DRIVING 100 MILES AN HOUR AND AT SOME POINT THE WHEELS WERE GOING TO FALL OFF, HATE TO SAY I TOLD TO YOU SO, BUT I TOLD YOU SO.
November 15th, 2011 at 3:26 pm
Having your players quit on you is probably the worst trait a coach can possess. Bad game planning, scheming, that’s fixable, but being unable to motivate your players? That’s not an overnight fix and the best medicine for that is a pink slip.
November 15th, 2011 at 4:10 pm
How soon they forget…weeks ago, we were playing for first place in the division. Remember?
There have only been a couple games since…and yet the “great” fans of Tampa are already throwing in the towel.
November 15th, 2011 at 4:17 pm
1) Stop shouting…it’s rude 😉
2) Don’t call people idiots…you wouldn’t like it if someone called you one.
3) This team has had its ups and downs, but one thing can be said for Raheem…when he see’s a problem in his handling of the team, he works hard to fix it.
For example, when Gruden came, what were the chances he would have changed directions if the team went 5-12 in his first year? ZERO.
Yet Raheem did change direction. It is this willingness to adapt that is the reason I like him…and believe me, when they first gave him the HC job, I WAS NOT in favor of it.
4) Raheem needs to be the Head Coach. He DOES NOT need to be the Defensive Coordinator. We need to get one in here as soon as possible. A guy like Rod or Marvin (I know they can’t come, but someone like that).
Or maybe the Glazers can lure Monte back (doubtful though).
November 15th, 2011 at 4:19 pm
I was listening to Raheems call in show and a caller came on and did the usual gushing over Raheem and how he like him as a coach and then the question came….”Raheem this year I just don’t see any fire or enthusiasm on the team like last year. What do you think is the problem?” OUCH as Paul just said motivation is a direct reflection on the head coach. In fact lets look at some of the main issues… Penalties (usually an issue if coaches do not have discipline for repeat offenders), Poor starts (an issue if you have poor game planning going into the game-ie-coaching) and then the effort issue (when you have a lack of effort its from poor motivation which is directly tied to the head coach.) Raheems over his head in my opinion and things will not change until we see a change of leadership at the top.
November 15th, 2011 at 4:22 pm
Hey Pete the “Honest” fans of Tampa are throwing in the towel just like the “great” players of the Bucs.Get real Pete . Do you really think this team will go out and win 5 or 6 of the last 7 games? Not happening.
November 15th, 2011 at 4:22 pm
I hope they Give Ahmad Black a Chance or Asante, Diles and Watson.
November 15th, 2011 at 4:56 pm
CC, I think they can win 5…I’m not saying they will, but if the penalties alone are addressed it would increase our chances.
November 15th, 2011 at 4:58 pm
If Morris is reeplaced, I would love for it to be Joe Philbin. He might actually be good for the offense and for Freeman.
November 15th, 2011 at 6:08 pm
Nick +1
November 15th, 2011 at 6:09 pm
I have a mental vision of Raheems “Woodshed.” Beers in the fridge, fully stocked bar, pool table, big screen tv, several comfy couches. Hey if its Rah’s woodshed thats nothing like the one that Ditka used to use on his underperforming players. We need to be player friendly like the Head Coach or we won’t get results like we had on Sunday!!!
November 15th, 2011 at 7:15 pm
Haha Pete, don’t even pretend to call our fans great. This is the worst fan base in the NFL. –Insert bad economy excuse here–
November 15th, 2011 at 7:21 pm
Rah’s woodshed is called: Jackson’s with quincy, ronde, aqib, T Jax – Rah Quincy and Ronde sipping the Hennessy while T Jax and Aqib smoking out. Later, they head to Thee Doll House, hop on over to the Penthouse Club for some late night action.
Quincy pays with the money that Rah stole for him from the Glazers. The running joke is: when Quincy plays bad, Geno gets benched – they all laugh their a–es off about how gullible we all are. Meanwhile, T Jax can’t figure out how Rah got him millions after missing a season with his 3rd weed suspension. T Jax jokes “Rah made my a– more money home on suspension than I would have made playing, I never thought drug suspensions were so profitable.”

Sorry Joe, it says duplicate comment the first time I submit, so I submit again same thing – next thing I know there are 2 or 3.
November 15th, 2011 at 7:26 pm
Thomas, there is something seriously, seriously screwed up with you. I mean seriously. Nobody draws up that entire scenario just for the fun of it. I don’t know if Raheem stole your woman or something (wouldn’t surprise me AT ALL).
November 15th, 2011 at 8:02 pm
K2 did you seriously just saw we have the worst fan base in the NFL???? This comes from a guy whose namesake has to sit out practices for his knee so he can drop passes and not run correct routes when it counts. When you get an inferior product on the cheap like the Glazers shove down our throats you get empty stadiums on Sunday. Cheap on the GM (no experience) our draft picks show, cheap on the Head Coach (he looks like hes only coached a secondary) and no free agents except a freakin kicker????? Please K2 you must be dreaming.
November 15th, 2011 at 8:03 pm
If the Bucs only win 1 more game this year it had better be Sunday! The Packer fans are always fumbduckers but now is God awful.
November 15th, 2011 at 8:13 pm
Yes, Nickin, because you certainly know the correct routes Kellen should run. Are you Greg Olson? Drops passes? The same Kellen that has led the team in catches the last 2 seasons? Damn. Keep bashing Kellen though.
An inferior product? We had 10 wins last year and the stadium STILL didn’t fill up. Front running fans that don’t even know when to front run lol. That freaking PUNTER (not kicker) is one of the best in the league, you down playing that acquisition makes you look stupid.
C’mon dude, you can do better than that. Show up to the stadium, support your team regardless of the circumstances. You don’t like the team? Then what are you doing calling yourself a fan?
November 15th, 2011 at 9:11 pm
K2 last year was a fluke you ought to know that by now. Any team coached by the current staff should not be winning 5 games much less 10. The kicker? Yes great move I agree. Problem is it was the only move!!!!! Your telling me this team was good enough to stand pat???? Well yes if Williams can not become the 2nd Michael Clayton, Freeman doesn’t do an impression of Ryan Leaf and the entire defense doesn’t revert back to Jim Bates youngry style. As for Winslow???? Give me a break lets see what he’s given us the last few weeks. Screaming at Freeman right after his touchdown to Parker (OUR BEST RECEIVER) because he didn’t get to pad his stats. Offensive Pass interference right after one on Benn on a crucial play the following week and then Sunday he has his defender totally beat on a crucial 3rd down and he gives a facemask after all the preaching Raheem did all week on penalties are you kidding me?????? Please give me Jeff Graham, Tony Gonzalez or any other tight end in our division right now over this malcontent non producer. Talib can go right along with him. By the way don’t tell Raheem his favorite warriors are going to get him fired.
November 15th, 2011 at 9:25 pm
Go back and look at BOTH calls on Kellen. There was ZERO pass interference and ZERO face mask, they were both phantom calls. Anybody looking at the jumbo tron could see that. But then again, you were watching on your grainy internet feed so it would probably be tough to see. Kellen is a very good tight end, and like I said, the leading receiver on the team the last 2 years.
You’re really calling Mike Will Clayton 2.0?? And Freeman Leaf? Talk about an idiot, but not only that, a perfect example of the terrible over-reactionary fan I’m talking about.
November 16th, 2011 at 12:04 am
K2 lets get this straight I like Freeman. He can’t help it he has no real number one receiver and a whining overpaid tight end who rarely produces. Winslow would not last on a well coached team like the Patriots. They wouldn’t put up with the “I rarely practice my knee is sore” garbage. And I was at the game Sunday so I saw how wide open Winslow was when he dumped the facemask penalty. No reason for it plain and simple. At the game get it??? And I have been a fan since Steve Spurrier was their quarterback and in all those years of often horrible football I never attended a game with such little effort as that one. Raheems lost this team no doubt about it. Can he get it back? Maybe but I am betting the Glazers eat his contract and hire a real head coach before the 2012 season.
November 16th, 2011 at 12:26 am
Raheem has been preaching this “physical, fast, consistent, smart, etc…” mantra all year, but he just now seems to be practicing what he preaches. I understand that he is somewhat limited with the number of padded practices allowed but is he really just now thinking about this? The whole “preservation” thing sounds ridiculous when were talking the youngest team in the league.
Many of the young players and even coaches (especially the HC) are really just now realizing how tough the NFL is and how much adversity you can go through in the pros. It will be interesting to see how they respond as the sh*t has pretty much hit the fan at this point.
These guys have to establish some kind of swagger and at least give Green Bay a tough game. If they get blown out by Rodgers and Co. I feel this season will implode and they will lose valuable ground in the rebuilding process.
November 16th, 2011 at 1:14 am
Thomas 2.2:
LOL No worries.
November 16th, 2011 at 2:38 am
Been saying this for a while now. The CBA has limited padded practices. Not every team has struggled with fundamentals like tackling. The ones that are struggling (like the Bucs) can only practice in pads about once a week on average (even less in the last 6 weeks). How are the teams struggling with fundamentals supposed to be able to work those things out? I don’t even think they’ll let you hit a tackling dummy without pads on. Basically practices are just glorified walk throughs at this point. No big deal for teams that have good fundamentals, but the “kiss of death” for teams that really need to work it out.
As for being tough like the Eagles and benching players like Desean Jackson for missing meetings and such… how has that worked out for them? I believe they’re only 3-6, with the only teams they’ve beaten being the Rams, Cowboys and Redskins. For that matter, how has that worked out for them spending big money on the top free agents? How has that worked out for them having a coaching staff with years of experience under their belts?
The Bucs suck because the coaches are inexperienced? How much experience to Shanahan, Reid and Spagnuolo have? Compare that to Harbaugh in SF or Hue Jackson in Oakland, and how they’re doing.
The Bucs suck because they lack fundamentals? Well, how are the coaches supposed to coach that when they can’t even put pads on these guys? This is what the players wanted, glorified walk-throughs for practices. And they got it…. too bad for us fans.
The talent was overestimated? Maybe so, maybe not. Young guys fresh on the scene can surprise opponents. Come year two they’re not a surprise anymore. And without OTAs to continue to advance that talent and make them “better”, of course other teams will have the advantage. The younger the team, the more at a disadvantage they are because of the lockout. No OTAs, little improvement, the better chance of the opponent shutting them down. And that’s not something you can turn around during the season when the majority of the time is installing a game plan during practices.
November 16th, 2011 at 2:41 am
And don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see Black benched. Not because he needs to be taught a lesson about working harder, but because he’s horrible. It’s the other 52 guys on the roster that should learn from that lesson, not Black, he should just be benched. Let the other 52 guys learn that you better damn well play hard, fast, physical, and fundamentally sound or you’ll be out the door too. Let Black be that example to them.
November 16th, 2011 at 8:44 am
I think rah gets an under the table cut of quincy’s contract.
November 16th, 2011 at 3:09 pm
Sorry Rah but the honeymoon is way over…your dime store quips, motor mouth and BS just doesn’t fly anymore…you have no business being a D coordinator much less a leader of men…you want change…start by being the biggest dic* you could possibly be to those punks on your team….they deserve NOTHING…they haven’t earned anything and from what EVERYBODY can see they punk you at every opportunity…no one is saying you have to be 2 faced like Gruden…more Parcells/Bellicheck(sp?) less huckster d bag….just sayin
November 16th, 2011 at 3:11 pm
Someone mentioned Jeff Fisher…I would love that…but then again that would crease our greedy owners wallet…GOD FORBID!
