Glazer Family To Help Finance New Stadium
November 14th, 2011Joe came across this little nugget from his good friend Justin Pawlowski of WDAE-AM 620. Many of you enjoy Justin’s work as well during Bucs pregame and postgame shows heard on the Bucs radio network.
Per a post by Justin on WDAE-AM’s website, via FOX 8 in New Orleans, Tulane University is preparing to break ground on a new football stadium. The New Orleans institution of higher learning (which also produced among others, Shaun King, Peter Brown and Gregg Rosenthal), has played football games in the Superdome for decades.
Now, the school is building an on-campus stadium and two NFL families are helping finance the new stadium, so FOX 8 reports: Tom Benson’s family and the Glazer family.
FOX 8 has also learned that the Benson family and the Glazer family, which owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will largely fund the new stadium.
“I want to give a huge thank you to them. I mean that’s putting us on the map,” says student Efren Lopez.
The old Tulane Stadium was demolished in 1980. Back in the 60’s, Tulane advertised it’s stadium in football programs as the ‘world’s largest steel stadium.’
It seems, per Justin, that Avi Glazer’s wife attended Tulane and she currently sits on the school’s board of trustees.
Joe thinks this is a wonderful gesture by Team Glazer. Now the first thing Joe thought of when he learned the Glazer family would help fund a college football stadium, maybe Stu Sternberg should attend a Bucs game and talk turkey to see if Team Glazer would want to help build a sorely-needed new Rays stadium in downtown Tampa.

Or how about a stadium for the University of South Florida?

David:
Or how about a stadium for the University of South Florida?
1) Rays need one far worse that South Florida.
2) South Florida already plays in a state-of-the-art facility.
3) South Florida needs to beat UCONN once in a while before they start worrying about a new stadium.
November 14th, 2011 at 11:34 pm
I just meant that they go out of the community to support another University.
November 14th, 2011 at 11:39 pm
David:
Please reread the post. The Glazer family has a connection to Tulane.
November 14th, 2011 at 11:45 pm
Great for the Glazers, let’s just hope they remember their checkbook to free agency. 🙂
November 14th, 2011 at 11:48 pm
This is a good thing and I can’t fault them for it, but I too would prefer them spend a few Bucs on upgrades at the CITS. One thing I noticed yesterday with the time change was that later in the game the shadow was cast right down the middle of the field. I have seen it in the past but never really thought about it. But how awkward to be playing in bright sun and shade at the same time. If the Glazers would spend the money to cover the stands much like Quest Field in Seattle, everyone would be in the shade and they could probably do it in a way to have everything in the shade, including the fans on the East side. It wouldn’t be that hard to do, but a much cheaper solution is to start games in November and December at 4:15 and the problem pretty much goes away by then. Beer stays colder longer in the shade.
November 14th, 2011 at 11:51 pm
@ BigMac
A lot of cold beer will be required if the Bucs keeping playing like they did yesterday!

Community Investment Tax Stadium. Hillsborough County taxpayers financed 100% of that place.
The Glazers have a family connection to this community. I read your post.
Oh yeah, the Glazers make money off USF playing in RJS. Silly me.
November 15th, 2011 at 12:09 am
Actually, the more I think about it RJS might just end up being USF’s anyway. Once the Glazer’s weasel out of their lease and move the team to LA or London or wherever it will be USF left. Hillsborough County owns RJS, right?
November 15th, 2011 at 1:17 am
rah will need somewhere to coach. Green wave sounds about right………
Salt of the earth those Glazer boys are! Generous right to the bone.
November 15th, 2011 at 3:07 am
Oh nice, they can do this, but they can’t spend money to improve their OWN team. Can we please get some beast linebackers and a running back who’s not cheap like Kregg Lumpkin?
November 15th, 2011 at 4:31 am
Well isn’t that just swell!
Look at those Glazer boys…all grown up!
A shiny new stadium sure holds its value better than a few free agents…
I mean the stadium will always be there… Those million dollar contracts might not be still be around come selling time…
Yea…that’s right….I have joined that wacko fringe group of disillusioned Bucs fans that think ownership has a lot of explaining to do.
I still remember when “Team Glazer” was trying to sell the Bucs back in 2000 to make a move to purchase the J-E-T-S Sucks Sucks Sucks!
Its just too bad that they found a much more lucrative racket of underpaying subpar NFL players and using the profits to bankroll their fancy kickball team overseas.
What a great time to be a Bucs fan….
November 15th, 2011 at 8:19 am
Or how about he reduces his obscene cut of the USF gameday take? Currently the Glazers make more from each USF game than USF does.
November 15th, 2011 at 8:21 am
Hey Fear The Glow: I can go one better on the fringe front. I don’t think the Glazers ever planned to own the Tampa Bay Bucs. I think they were planning to own the Baltimore bucks. Ever wonder why the Browns announced their move out of the blue with games left to play in the season? They were in a race with the Glazers to get the pot of money from Baltimore.
November 15th, 2011 at 9:31 am
Im sure at a healthy interest rate.
Otherwise, how about helping our team before other teams by paying for a legit head coach and some costly talent.
November 15th, 2011 at 9:43 am
Fear the Glo:
You’ll have to provide Joe a link to this. Joe doesn’t ever remember Team Glazer putting the Bucs on the market.
November 15th, 2011 at 10:02 am
Pay for a stadium in another community after holding this community hostage to build one, but can’t even pay for legitimate players in FA to fill this stadium at home? That makes sense!!!
November 15th, 2011 at 10:32 am
hugh gave millions to the university of alabama. kinda sucked as an owner.
i dont recall the glazers offering to sell to baltimore. but i have a distinct recollection of glazer boys helicoptering over osceola county when they were putting a gun to the head of the community to get the taxpayers to pay for a new stadium. they also represented they were going to pay for half which never happened.
pure as the driven snow tbey are!
November 15th, 2011 at 10:38 am
I’ve never seen more people angry at someone else donating financing to an academic institution. You people need to get a life.
November 15th, 2011 at 10:54 am
Who the hell is Avi Glazer and why does the entire clan have to pay just cuz Avi’s wife went there? No wonder they don’t spend any money on the Bucs.
November 15th, 2011 at 10:55 am
Hey Leighroy, see Jerry Sandusky, Joe Paterno, et al
November 15th, 2011 at 11:03 am
lightningbuc:
Not sure if Sandusky gave a dime to Penn State but Paterno — per his bio on the official Penn State website — claims Paterno has given over $5 million to the school; $4 million to the library, $1 million to the medical center and tens of thousands of dollars sprinkled about the campus.
November 15th, 2011 at 11:04 am
Leighroy:
Joe is convinced if Team Glazer found a cure for cancer, people would b!tch that they won’t go to home Bucs games because the cure should have been discovered sooner.
November 15th, 2011 at 11:28 am
if team glazer were the collective second gunman on the grassy knowl some would find some sort of fuzzy feel good article to post.
the lovefest is curious.
at one time they were great owners. not since 2005 or so.
November 15th, 2011 at 11:52 am
Joe here,
@Eric — Calling a major donation a “wonderful gesture” as was done in this post is a “lovefest.” ??? … Joe would guess Team Glazer actually would have preferred this Tulane story didn’t even get out, given that there was no news release about it. … If you’re concocting agenda theories, you could just as easily go the other way with this post.
November 15th, 2011 at 12:30 pm
point well taken but it does come on the heels of “see their not cheap” they are paying ticket master pricing.
i dont think u have an agenda at all.
admitedley i do!
i dont trust em.
they could impress the hell out of me by not losing cowhers number.
keep up the good work. just a gentle tweak.
November 15th, 2011 at 12:52 pm
Perhaps we could also interest them in funding Tampa’s struggling NFL team.
November 15th, 2011 at 1:33 pm
Hopefully they’re taking money from the London game, the game that was taken away from the good people of the TB area who are struggling and use football as an escape. Sorry Joe, this pisses me off. I understand they have 1 tie to Tulane. They have 8 million ties to the TB area. They continue to take away from us. The Glazer museum and hospital were built a long time ago. They haven’t done jack lately
November 15th, 2011 at 2:56 pm
nick:
Wasn’t the Glazer museum built just last year?
November 15th, 2011 at 3:04 pm
When did the Glazer’s personal investments become subject to public scrutiny? You guys never complain when I spend millions outside of the Tampa Bay area.
November 15th, 2011 at 3:48 pm
you’re right, seems like forever ago. but i don’t know. Willfully taking away a home game every year trumps all. We’re Tampa, not NY or LA, we need all we can get. Just sayin.
November 15th, 2011 at 5:33 pm
Hey Joe. Here is a link about the Glazer’s wanting to sell the Bucs to buy the Jets.

Fear The Glow:
“Kevin Glazer???”
Sort of tells Joe the credibility of the story right there, don’t you think?
November 15th, 2011 at 6:03 pm
This was also reported in our local papers back then but I could find anything about it online.
November 15th, 2011 at 6:03 pm
couldn’t ^^
November 16th, 2011 at 1:01 am
If you are looking to the NY Times for the truth, I have a bridge and a whole bunch of waterfront property I want to sell you.
November 17th, 2011 at 8:50 pm
. Can some readers here please note that the Glazers DO NOT “use their profits to bankroll their fancy kickball team overseas”. The Glazers got my club Manchester United on an LBO in 2005. They have been using Manchester Uniteds own profits to pay down the debt they put onto the club.(Five hundred and seventy million British Pounds has been sucked out of United since 2005 to cover debt repayments and even management / consultancy fees which the Glazers use to pay themselves. )Our club now has a policy of mostly getting youth and promising players (under 26 years); will go for the odd freebie and now has one of the lowest players wages in England. When we buy new players , we now look in the bargain bins with sales of other players helping to finance the purchase .Does any of this sound familiar to you.?United is only doing well because of the iron will of the manager Alex Ferguson to get the best out of his players.
