“Supposed To Be A Physical Football Team”

September 12th, 2011

Like most Bucs fans, former Buccaneer guard turned radio personality Ian Beckles was aghast by what he saw against the Lions.

Speaking on The Ron and Ian Show on WDAE-AM 620 today, Beckles said what’s on the field doesn’t match the talk coming from the head coach.

“This is supposed to be a rough and tough team that Raheem is building,” Beckles said. “Would have been nicer to see a little bit better of a fight out there [on a day honoring Lee Roy Selmon].

“They really didn’t do anything well. They didn’t rush the passer well. They didn’t cover well.

“They never really tried to establish anything [in the running game]. When you’re up early, try to establish something. I thought we’re supposed to be a physical football team. That’s what Raheem keeps saying.”

The Bucs definitely the physical battle on both sides of the ball. From the lines to Calvin Johnson dominating with his freakish skills. Joe’s not about to call the Bucs soft. The Lions were just better.

is there any identity to the team. Freeman looked lost in the first half. No blount, our other backs are slow. Sure would have been nice to have a change of pace guy like sproles or freaking anyone with a little shake or speed, you know, like and NFL running back should have. Bad offseason by the bucs, IMHO…..They keep selling us lines of BS, and no wonder the fans dont show, we are smart and can decide for ourselves.

how can u get pressure on tha QB with constant 2 and 3 step drops? We didn’t get any sacks but tha run defense did there job. This game was lost on 1st and 2nd down. Sprinkle in some Olsen and u got urself a Lions victory

  3. jvato24 Says:

The Bucs rarely had anyone bracketed when they caught the ball .. This wasnt the old cover 2 … Thats for sure .. Most Lions had 5-7 yards before any Buc made contact … Thats not gang tackling …

IMO besides a Pick by Talib for 7 .. A return by Stroughter that got us 3 points and a ridiculous TD catch by MW .. This game was not even close with the Offense .. The Defense played like 45 mins it seemed like ..

I was damn excited .. And that was lame yesterday

  4. snook Says:

Raheem is a bag of wind. He said long ago that the Bucs would play hard, fast and violent. This team is none of those. Yesterday, the Bucs were soft and slow. And dumb. I’m still shaking my head over that dumb draw on 4th and 1. Morons.

    @Buddaboy

I agree. Much as I love tha Bucs here are my main problems with them.

I borderline hate our O-Line. They haven’t been good since Randall McDaniel and Jeff Christy was here. Overpaid. PERIOD.

We have ZERO Burners at tha RB and WR spots. Give Freeman some TOYS. It’s looking like a Muslim Christmas.

Strong Safety hasn’t been stable since Lynch left us.

Even when Dungy was here and going thru tha building process, we splashed some Free Agents, which in turn gave us a boost in terms of skill and experience. We don’t have any of that currently.

I have said it and I’ll say it again. Raheem is nothing more than a learning Defensive Coordinator and Olsen, at best, is a Div II QB coach with no real offensive scheme or prowess to call plays in the NFL. The Bucs have loads of talent, although they should have picked up some experience and skill in FA. Not a lot just a smart sprinkle like Dungy did in the past. I only get to see the play by play on NFL.Com so I can at least keep my blood pressure in check. I can only imagine how frustrating it is in person or live. Got a glimpse here against the Redskins and knew we were in trouble. Hang in there. Go Bucs!

  7. Dave Says:

Disagree. They played well against the run and they did rush well… in the beginning. They pressured Stafford a bunch early one. They got tired because the offense did absolutely nothing

  8. Buddhaboy Says:

They arent paid millions of dollars to get tired…Sick of the freaking excuses already.

  9. Bucnnole Says:

Bad coaching (ie no Blount, shotgun on third down, and not going deep), no urgency getting up to the line while clock ticks away, and they looked soft. Dear Donald Penn, for someone who cried about not going to the Pro Bowl, you played like a scrub. Beat on 80% of plays against you. SOFT!

  10. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

It was a RUUD Awakening for Tampa yesterday. I have to agree with Ian Beckles, as much as I hate to.

  11. Buddhaboy Says:

Our safeties just arent very good, Well in fact, the defense isnt very good.

Would like to see more of Asante, he seems to like to hit somebody.

Sean Jones is soft and cody grimm, i like, but dude is coming off a broken leg.

anyone ever notice that Kyle Arrington kid we let walk a couple of years ago is now a starter on the Patriots…….he was from coaches Hofsta too…

  12. Jorge Says:

hey Joe!!! Raheem just thanked you for being a NARC and getting his phone records checked..that was funny!!!

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

Beckles is clueless. I thought he said Ruud was the softey Ob our defense!! Who’s he can character assassinate next? Grimm? Trueblood? Faine?

Yeah, we’ve figured him out. To bad mouth a LB for being soft, and it being anyone but Quincy Jane, makes Ian just another smuck with an agenda. His B.A. Already has hurt this team. I don’t want to hear his opinion anymore. He’s an ass.

  14. Buddhaboy Says:

unfortunately Capt Tim is wrong. they were soft yesterday….

After watching that objectively, no one would come away saying they were a physical team…not happening.

  15. Tye Says:

They Keep playing games like they did yesterday and a huge majority of the stadium will likely be empty by the last Home game… The coaches and the players are both to blame…. It was like they didn’t even bother to show up!

WoW! Even the Panthers showed more promise!!!

  16. Nate Says:

Our team didnt change any plays on defense it was sad.. I think with Ruud we win this game.. And i was big on letting him go 🙁

  17. Buddhaboy Says:

    for real nate.

  18. BucFan South Tampa Says:

I want to know why Freeman was throwing at everbody’s knees or ankles. The defense collapsed because Freeman has them out on the field too long. Not good Freeman. Do better.

  19. nc0gnet0 Says:

Interesting comments. Anyone interested in what a Lions fan has to say abou the game? A few observations…….

    1) I found it really sad that a 10-6 team that barely missed the playoffs couldn’t sell out for its home opener, and that my freinds is on you the fans!

    2) First off, the number one reason you lost the game. You were outcoached, outgameplanned and you were very slow to make adjustments. Detroit went to no-huddle from the get go, forcing you to play base defense without subtitutions. This is why your D-line underperformed so poorly, the only way to stop this is to force the opposing O to go three and out a few times. Midway through the second quarter your D-line was sucking wind so bad in the heat, no way they were going to get a decent pass rush, nobody would. YOu guys are putting way to much blame on your personell when you should be blaming the coaching staff.

    3) Last year you played us with our third string QB, this year it was or first String QB…..notice a difference? Stafford has all the makings of being as good as Tom Brady in time, if he can just stay healthy. He is a very smart QB and has complete control of the offense and the ability to read defenses and call the plays at the line of scrimmage based on his reads. I could be wrong but I don’t beleive your coaching staff has given Freeman that much control yet.

    4) Suh had more a factor they you realize, and while his numbers didn’t show it, he was facing a constant double team. Most of the time you blocked with 5 against our 4, this made coverage of your wideouts that much easier. Not to mention or linebacking core is much improved over last year. Besides, its hard for Suh to get sacks when he is sitting on the bench eating popcorn watching Stafford play catch with CJ and Nate for 25 minutes in the first half.

    5) I think both teams are pretty evenly matched, but I give the edge to our talent guys over yours. However, if your coaching staff could have established the run with blount early, it would have been a completely different game. All in all, its your coaching staff that needs to shoulder the bulk of the blame for the loss, not your players. But, its just one game, and even pittsburgh and atlanta got blown out and I doubt they are giving up on the season.

But, give the Lions their due, while they are not going to the superbowl this year, they are at this time a better team than the bucs.

  20. MTM Says:

The offense and defense did not look ready Sunday. That is a coaching problem. The offensive calls were very Mike Shula esque. The defense is all Raheem. You expect to see some blown coverages with all the rookies. But it was out of hand. This loss is on the coaching staff.
