McCoy Talks About Being Overwhelmed

In candid, entertaining and mildly embarrassing comments to a crew of reporters following the Bucs beating at the hands of the Patriots, Gerald McCoy shared a long take about the Patriots and the Bucs’ reaction to them last night.
The Boston Globe uploaded the audio and transcribed some highlights. Here’s a snippet:
“… …Now [Mason Foster] knows when those live bullets start flying when Detroit comes here, now he knows what to expect. And I’m glad he got to experience that. (DE Adrian) Clayborn came to me and was like, ‘Oh my god, it was so fast!’ I said, ‘I know! That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you!’ It was a reality check, we needed that.
“Man, I’m telling you man, they came out, they’d turn around huddle, snap, oh, ‘There’s the Mike, Go!’ I was like, ‘Dang! Um, Mr. Brady, can we line up?’ He didn’t care. He was like, ‘You’re not going to line up.’ When we turned around one time I checked back around and my hand was going to the grass and they were like, ‘Hut!’ And I said, ‘Noooooooooooo!’”

It’s serves as a good look at how far away from the Patriots the young Bucs are. But McCoy says the types of mistakes made on defense tonight are very coachable and fixable.
We’ll find out.

I thought McCoy came to play – missed a tackle on Woodhead that should have been made, but otherwise I thought he was disruptive. I’ve already given my opinion on the game last night, but let me state a fact. We better get Blitz pick-up fixed like now or we’re going to get our gem of a QB hurt and the bottom falls out of the season.

The O line was the main issue did you see the way penn was man handled on many occasions one play he turned his back to let his assingment take advantage of him

Sorry Gerald, but I fail to find the humor in getting your butt kicked all over the field for two quarters. Too bad he doesn’t find that asswhipping as disappointing as most BUC fans do.

I think the Bucs prepared for vanilla pre-season football and got a superbowl contender instead, Nothing more! This is the KC game of last week just reversed. The patriots were prepared and we werent. It’s just that simple. In the regular season Rah wont let this happen.
Pre-Season is the perfect time to remind the Youngry Bucs they have a ways to go yet.

Disruptive? Really? Not sure what game you watched but it wasn’t what I saw. On the wiff Woodhead turned into a 29 yard gain McCoy simply blew the tackle and was invisible the rest of the half. Brady had his way with us until the very end of the half but they were already up by 4 touchdowns so I’m sure he had taken his foot off the accelerator by that time.

Totally agree! I’m just upset that I bought into this garbage that we could actually challenge for a division title when it’s pretty obvious we lack the experience, talent and intensity to do so.

PEOPLE IT’S not that serious! Bucs fans are the worse! Everyone is acting like it’s the end of the season, we shouldn’t even play this year. Vick had 3 picks last night, do you hear Eagles fan throwing in the towel? It doesn’t help to have ex-bucs who were average at best, complain about what he said. When I said they should bring in 1 or 2 vets, I get jumped on b/c Marky D knows way more football than I do. This is why having an extra vet or two helps. I love how all these fans know McCoys role on every play, he was in the backfield many times. He is to disrupt the play, he did. The backside didn’t have containment. I shouldn’t be surprised, it’s always the same….

JB … to expect the Bucs to be a playoff contender with mostly rookies and 2nd year players with not much playing time together as a unit is Crazy.
Add in no OTAs and we are looking at players with about 2 weeks of NFL Practices. It would be a cute story book but it will take some time for the Defense to start to Gel. But could really be something once it does, and it could be sooner than later.
As far as the O-Line, I dont know what to say.

You’re right, McCoy did have quite a good game. I came away impressed with his progress. And this was against the Pats starters. Clayborn looked good as well.
Don’t worry too much, folks. Philly signed every big name free agent on the market and they stunk it up last night just as bad as the Bucs. So much for “dream team”.
We’ll know where we really stand after the Lions game.

McCoy is all mouth. I gave him another low grade. In all fairness I am going to watch and grade him again. Foster was lost, Clayborn the same. If Rah took the approach that most legit head coaches do after the lockout and first few preseason games, to prioritize staying healthy, I would agree that this was meaningless.
But Rah didnt realize (until the first quarter last night) that winning preseason games doesnt help your record or legitimacy. Rah tried to prepare as if these games count, and he still got embarrassed.
Now do you guys see what happens when you have an excellent head coach running things? That is what it looks like.

Simeon oh my lord I just read that link. I like Gerald McCoys honesty and frankness but I think he shed light where he probably should not have. Now the Bucs are for the moment the old Yucks and the nation can laugh at us. Come on Gerald keep the details of your butt whippin to yourself. If you were totally clueless and unprepared you have to know that looks bad for Raheem. I like Raheem and have not seen the game since it was blacked out heavily but I DVR’d it and now I am not sure I can stand to look!!!!!!! Maybe I will keep one eye open. Dang the Pats can’t be that much better. Dominick I guess you still think we have no areas of need for free agency???? YIKES!!!!!!!!! So much for my quest to make sure I am there on opening day. This loss set me back to a “lets wait and see”. Love my Bucs but this was brutal.

Thomas, there’s only one Belichick. If we could get him, we should, any team should, but we have Raheem and he’s pretty good and will only get better.
I’m perfectly satisfied that we ate some humble pie last night, we need it in large doses. Makes evaluation easier too for the final roster. Now we don’t have to worry about evaluating everybody with everybody playing well. I haven’t seen the tape, but I’m sure there were several players that did their jobs well (though in the few highlights on buccaneers.com I’m not sure anybody on the 1st half Oline played well). Getting whipped by the Pats will only serve as an educational tool, showing us where we need to improve, and what we need to do to get better. It’s far better than whipping a hapless team 25-0. No Superbowls have ever been won in preseason.
The few highlights I saw on defense (they were Pats highlights) I saw the DL getting good penetration but not wrapping up well or containing on the backside. The wrapping up well is okay, their job first and foremost is to be disruptive, but the backside has to be covered. I was impressed with the penetration I saw and that is a big improvement from getting blown off the ball like in years past. That being said, great penetration without containment means we will be suspectible to misdirection runs and passes and cutbacks….which I guess is better than getting kicked in the teeth again and again and again.

I remember in preseasons gone buy how 55 used to stand on the sidelines and follow the play of the youngsters in the second half. Lynch too. Encouraging, and a stern look if they gave a half ass effort.
Hard to replace that kind of thing, IMO.
The farther we get from those guys, the more special they become.

Gerald McCoy is awesome. Jury’s still out on him as a player, and I hope to god he turns into a perennial all-pro.
But I can’t think of a single NFL player who seems more fun to hang out with.

I was pretty ticked yesterday, but today I realize it was a gift for these guys to get schooled by the best team in the NFL and I’m still excited to watch them grow. Okay, I’m still ticked at the o-line and I hope they are paying for it in the sun all week. Okam is starting to be real fun to watch. Loved the shove on Mallett.

Buccaneers Needed to relinquish some coin on FA D-linemen. According to GM Dominick “You only go after FAs when you’ve missed in the Draft. McCoy is a miss, Price? miss etc etc. McCoy still a deer in headlights? Well that truck is gonna be showing up at least 16 times in 2011. The Bucs will be “Road Kill”

This shows the impact lost with the departure of Ruud. We knew this was going to happen. Let’s just hope they can learn quick.
I don’t see anything wrong with this interview. McCoy is just being himself. Jovial and humble. He gave all the credit to the Patriots, as they deserved.

Ron and Ian really took his quotes out of context, but for carpetbaggers, they’re really well spoken. Steve White said McCoy played well, so I will take his word over jackball 2.2 any day. I can’t wait until he watches the tape again and blesses us with his foosball knowledge. Other than that, the game sucked and I can’t wait until the next game. You savvy?
