“Block Somebody”
August 29th, 2011Former Bucs offensive lineman Ian Beckles (1990-1996) is grumbling about what he’s seen from the offensive line this preseason.
Last week, speaking as co-host on The Ron and Ian Show on WDAE-AM 620, Beckles said he was troubled by the Bucs’ O-line failing to pick up vanilla “mike linebacker” blitzes from the Patriots in addtion to getting manhandled.
This morning, Beckles unleashed more frustration at the O-line after watching the Bucs-Dolphins game. It wasn’t a Ruudian blast, but powerful nonetheless.
“LeGarrette Blount hasn’t seen a hole yet,” Beckles said.
Beckles chided the whole team for being “too chippy” and for “too much mouthy going on,” in addition to “too much pushing going on.” Beckles said that shows a lack of discipline and will lead to more “stupid penalties.” Trueblood is a prime offender, Beckles said.
“Block somebody,” Beckles barked at the Bucs’ right tackle. “Trueblood was getting beat clean.”
Ted Larsen didn’t escape Beckles’ tirade.
“Don’t put Ted Larsen on Ndamukong Suh. It would be ugly. He was getting beat clean [against Miami],” Beckles said.
Joe can’t argue with Beckles too much, though Joe has to watch the tape again to study Trueblood’s play. At least there’s an alternative to Larsen, as Joe wrote about yesterday. As for Trueblood, James Lee has had a subpar preseason.

yes i agree the RT position is the weakest link on the team.. Maybe when its time for cuts The GM can pick up someone for better competition because im really worried with the lions d coming in!

Dline solved the last 2 years…
I have a feeling the next 2 years we will be spending high draft picks on O-line
Penn and Joseph are the only legit starters among this group.
we need a C (possibly Zuttah he looked good at the end of last year)
a LG and a RT

When I read that Jeremy Trueblood was resigned, my soul sighed. He’s the Kenyatta Walker 2.0, except he gets into more fights.
He’s been regularly beaten this preseason.

Stiffblood is AWESOME!

Travis, Andre Gurode, pro bowl center, Dallas is available. Doesn’t fit our profile, 32, 5.5mil and FA. Not my recommendation – just saying he is available.

Yeah, let’s push the panic button. That’s the answer.

This is the same line as last year, but healthier and with more experience. If the play is subpar it’s not on the players but on the major coaching change they went through in moving from Mangurian to Morris and then having no offseason to speak of.
I think it was a mistake getting rid of Mangurian who had these guys playing at an extremely high level, just so Olson could get “his guy” into the position. F-ck that decision. Utter stupidity.
Screw you, Olson! Your selfishness has set this line back in its development. Go jump in the nearest lake you control freak.

I agree Travis. Next year we get a big nasty first round o-lineman. Penn and Joseph are the only true brawlers on the line. Everyone else is expendable. Even Trueblood was only extended to a two year deal. Damar Dotson might be a nice surprise next year too. But I see a double o-line draft weekend coming 2012 in pure Dominick style. Also – Was wondering what everyone thinks about starting games with the offense in the 2 minute drill? Force Josh out of his take two quarters to get warmed up deal. He’s just so much more comfortable when he is just pushing his team and getting plays off quickly keeping the D on their heels. Raheem can say, Josh you have 2 minutes to get us a touchdown or I put in Johnson. I promise Free would get us a TD – HAHAHA – I’m kidding but you know what I mean. Something needs to happen to get this offense rolling early.

It is sad that Dallas tackle Free was sitting there for the taking in free agency. Bookend him with Penn and we could breathe a little easier for Freeman.
Would we have had to overpay for a Right Tackle? Yes. By a big margin.
But we have a franchise QB. The future of this team. We cannot have defensive ends blowing by our tackles and getting free shots on the future of this franchise. Trueblood looked silly at times against Miami.

Trueblood got beat clean a couple times for sure but too be fair there weren’t too many right tackles that Cameron Wake faced last year that he didn’t make look silly at some point. Dominik made a play for Doug Free(a guy who has proven himself at left tackle at handling speed rushers) and couldn’t snatch him away from “America’s team”. Oh well. I’d say most of the league’s right tackles struggle when they face an elite edge rusher on their side. Its more important to see Trueblood get some nasty run blocking in. That right side of Joseph + Trueblood is supposed to be the “maulers” we run behind consistently but they haven’t been that last year or this preseason so far.

Lets hope that maybe Luke Stocker can step up and be a guy who can help cover up for Trueblood if he continues to be a liability.
August 29th, 2011 at 4:34 pm
Trueblood looked good in the first two games. Cameron Wake can beat any RT on any team in the league, so that’s not an indicator of anything but Wake’s exceptional ability.
August 29th, 2011 at 4:35 pm
The o-line has been very mediocre & has not opened ANY holes
for the rb’s. And Freeman doesn’t look comfortable in the pocket
’cause someone’s always in his face. I hope this isn’t a sign of
things to come!
August 29th, 2011 at 4:57 pm
I watched the game back closely last night and Beckles nailed it. Trueblood was getting killed by Cameron Wake around the end numerous times. True did better in run blocking but the holes just aren’t there yet.

“Screw you, Olson! Your selfishness has set this line back in its development. Go jump in the nearest lake you control freak.”
FLBoyInDallas, I have to agree, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Our O Line is playing like chit lately, with the same people, it MUST be the coaching. Detroit nearly funked Tom Brady up last week. Suh is strong enough to flat end a quarterbacks career, and Jim Schwartz of Detroit is a defensive mastermind, who will send rushers at you from all positions.
Blount has not seen a hole to run through, except on short pass plays. Unless we are hiding our blocking schemes for the regular season, I see Tampa as being in trouble.
Detroit won it’s last 4 regular seasons games, and is undefeated this year. That is 7 games in a row that they have not tasted defeat.
As much as I want Tampa to win against Detroit, from what I have seen this preseason, it ain’t happening.
I hope I am wrong!

“Block Somebody”
What are you listening to Ian Beckles for???? He couldn’t block a plate of food!
August 29th, 2011 at 6:44 pm
Jimmy spoken like a true champ!!LMAO!!!
August 29th, 2011 at 6:58 pm
I am confused…last week I came down pretty hard on the oline…but this week I thought they did pretty well.
There were times Freeman had time to eat a meal in the pocket this week.
As to Ian Beckles…I was glad he got his own show a while back, and when he first got it, he did an okay job. But since then he has had ZERO positive things to say about his former team…unless you count “I’m positive they will not make the playoffs this year.”
Between that and his constant insulting of “white folks” and the lack of true sports talk on their show…I no longer even listen to them.
August 29th, 2011 at 7:45 pm
The O-line is playing bad and it doesn’t look like it is going to get better. These are the more experienced group on the team. It looks like the Bucs should have went after some replacements. You can’t tell me that after last season Truedud was irreplaceable. They cannot pass black or run block and have stupid penalties. They have no where to go but up.
August 29th, 2011 at 10:55 pm
Ahh, Ian Beckles continues to point out the bad players. It’s the white Ones!! Guess soon. Cody Grimm gets trashed! Way to listen to this guy, people.
The line is playing just like it always has- terrible. It couldn’t pass Block or Run Block for 7 games last year. Then Faine, Joseph, and Trueblood got hurt.Caddy’s average went from 2.3 to 6.4, Blount was rushing for 100+ yards a week, and Freeman’s QB average jumped up. That bunch has ALWAYS underachiever and sucked.. Nothing new at all

Jimmy,
Ian Beckles played on some piss poor teams , but he was a pretty decent gaurd in his prime….
